Wow, I live one block away from the "Jeff´s" billboard in Montevideo. I wondered what its meaning was. Edit: I passed today by the billboard where Jeff was located and they already changed it for one of Coke.

[–]Thunder-ten-tronckh 662 points663 points  (64 children)

That was my biggest problem with it.

There's no copy! How are people going to walk away with any lasting message? Especially in countries where they don't have this show to provide the context!

Edit: some of y'all are pointing out that it's likely for legal reasons. There's probably some wiggle room, but that makes sense. And to echo others, even the hashtag would have been a game changer. Missed opportunity, but it's a great idea nonetheless.

[–]Da_Bomber 387 points388 points  (22 children)

I think the joke was more in the "we have the brand there, take it!"

[–]PantsHasPockets 71 points72 points  (21 children)

I think the opportunity missed was just a little text under Jeff that said "Jeff got lung cancer from smoking" or something.

[–]gohabsgo24 290 points291 points  (20 children)

It was intentionally left without text to protect them legally.

[–]WHO_TF_AM_I 24 points25 points  (0 children)

He was dancing around potential lawsuits that entire segment, it was impressive

[–]smileyfrown 209 points210 points  (9 children)

He's banking on the video/segment to go viral.

Everyone has internet, so Uruguayan news can easily pick it up and tell people the meaning.

[–]Enamine 147 points148 points  (5 children)

I already saw quite a few newspapers and uruguayan blogs picking up it!

[–]BONG_RIPS_FOR_JESUS 139 points140 points  (11 children)

If they give any context connecting jeff to a particular company Last Week Tonight is going to get slapped with a defamation suit. I guess they could put a general "smoking is bad" type message but the diseased smoking lung kind of says that already

[–]jimforge 30 points31 points  (5 children)

Images, as I think John was pointing out, has a much stronger impact than connection to a show. Tobacco gets its power from making smoking look cool and powerful, but Jeff, who smokes, looks gross and sad. It's all about association in the mind. Most effective advertisement is about making you think first about the product visually or emotionally, and Jeff accomplishes both. At least, that's how it seems to be to me.

[–]PicopicoEMD 718 points719 points  (38 children)

Oh my god, I'm Uruguayan and almost threw my computer off the window when they put Paraguay as Uruguay in the map. Thank god I kept watching.

[–][deleted] 71 points72 points  (6 children)

But do you know where The Gambia is?

[–]Yes_This_Is_Jay 2144 points2145 points  (89 children)

[–]mmiu 75 points76 points  (53 children)

I didn't get it, do they still use the same packaging? I love them. Even a completely illiterate person would be decently informed about their health choices.

[–][deleted] 141 points142 points  (14 children)

They've used plain packaging for years now. It's everywhere.

[–][deleted] 55 points56 points  (9 children)

For me it was one thing to hear it, more of an abstract that would never happen, or would happen in some distant future. I switched up my career going from a cube with a PC to the back of an ambulance.

When I saw my first few smokers, took them in and really knew how bad they were thanks to knowing how to read into heart rhythms, heart rates, blood oxygen levels... literally every vital they had, I had to quit smoking. Physically when you see people dying from smoking related illnesses..., I can't imagine a worse way to go, and I've seen a lot of ways to go at this point.

The dying slowly day by day... gasping for air every breath, seeing someone struggle to walk concentrating on every breath, knowing that this had been their life for months, or even years.

Anyways smoking's bad, and paramedics aren't too thrilled with you for it. Contrary to popular belief, you can't just give a smoker oxygen till you've figured out how their lungs are screwed up. Their blood get's so used to processing CO2 that high levels of oxygen bringing them back up to normal levels can kick in a response by the brain to stop breathing... killing them. Or they'll pass out from the head rush from actually getting oxygen and cause you to panic.

Anyone else getting SUPER slow speed on this? I'm going to re-upload somewhere else.

EDIT: Vid.me, Youtube, Dailymotion

[–]Karmical 30 points31 points  (1 child)

That link loaded slowly for me. This one did the trick

[–]BullyingBullishBull 4039 points4040 points  (254 children)

John Oliver has real power and understands the people also have power now through the Internet, he has huge potential.

[–]mahpmahpmahp 770 points771 points  (65 children)

It's like a 45 minute show and they routinely post close to 20 minute clips online, most of them going viral.

[–]zefy_zef 368 points369 points  (19 children)

Never any ads on YouTube either. That's doing it right.

[–]memtiger 125 points126 points  (13 children)

It's like it should be a PBS Show... only it's better

[–]Threedawg 198 points199 points  (10 children)

Most people dont understand the absurd value that PBS has, and how great it truly is.

[–][deleted] 64 points65 points  (2 children)

They just need to start replaying Magic School Bus and Bill Nye with regular prime time Nova reruns.

[–]andsoitgoes42[🍰] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

... With support from viewers like you!

[–]FightingQuaker17 132 points133 points  (1 child)

Just 30 minutes long!

[–]drew2057 1238 points1239 points  (28 children)

His once a week model of content allows his journalism to have a much harder punch than nightly program (ie The Daily Show) by allowing more in depth research to be done.

Essentially they are sacrificing a small amount of topical coverage for more thorough analysis

It reminds me of older hard hitting 60 minutes segments that have been lacking in recent years. There's a wonderful quote by Jon Stewart (that I couldn't find) about how embarrassing it is that as a comedian he's given credibility because the media doesn't do their job.... totally applies to John Oliver too

Edit: Thanks for directing me to the exact wording Jon Stewart used

[–]ScruffCo 405 points406 points  (0 children)

I'm really appreciating the amount of research they do and how they present it. The fact that John Oliver will sit there and spend several minutes explaining international lawsuits and legal documents in a comedy driven show is awesome. The show runners have really done an excellent job with the format.

[–]Deadzors 67 points68 points  (7 children)

Well, then it's simple. We just need 7 different people(teams) each to do one show a day with this level of quality/research.

[–]storm-bringer 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Septuple the budget!

[–]andsoitgoes42[🍰] 8 points9 points  (1 child)

I'd watch each and every one.

[–][deleted] 38 points39 points  (2 children)

There's a wonderful quote by Jon Stewart (that I couldn't find) about how embarrassing it is that as a comedian he's given credibility because the media doesn't do their job.... totally applies to John Oliver too

Here it is:

"The embarrassment is that I’m given credibility in this world because of the disappointment that the public has in what the news media does."

[–]afschuld 14 points15 points  (1 child)

People were pushing an idea back in 2004 or 2008 I think of a Stewart/Colbert presidential ticket. When asked a bout it Stewart said that the fact that people latched on to that idea was incredibly sad and said horrible things about the state of our country's politics.

[–]Kratisto78 28 points29 points  (1 child)

Didn't be talk about that on crossfire? It was hilarious

[–]iOSanjay 1524 points1525 points  (85 children)

Yup, he doesn't just point out what's wrong, he actually does something about it.

[–]fairwayks 394 points395 points  (7 children)

...he actually does something about it.

Like finding actual legal letters, relevant video clips, creating T-shirts and posters, and developing mascots and their outfits. This guy takes satire, humor, and political commentary to a whole new stratospheric level.

[–]rphillip 260 points261 points  (6 children)

Dat HBO budget.

[–]SmokeyBare 714 points715 points  (20 children)

Turns all that potential into kinetic goodness

[–]partido 467 points468 points  (17 children)

Politicians should go to the John Oliver University of Pointing Out What's Wrong and Doing Something About It.

[–]maxgarzo 301 points302 points  (10 children)

A lot of people on the internet should go to the John Oliver University of Pointing Out What's Wrong and Doing Something About It.

Identify a problem, FIX IT!

[–][deleted] 23 points24 points  (1 child)

It's blowing up on twitter and elsewhere, and I wouldn't be surprised if this hits the top spot on reddit for a bit.

[–]7V3N 172 points173 points  (11 children)

As much as I love Jon Stewart, his style was more of just pointing fingers and mocking. John Oliver actually inspires efficacy and organizes it without controlling it.

[–][deleted] 105 points106 points  (6 children)

While I do think John Stewart's program is less focussed (Due to how the Daily Show is structured) I think you would not have a John Oliver show without the Daily Show leaving the ground work. I imagine it's hard to convince producers to make a comedy show that "lectures/Preaches" let alone does it in large 20 min. segments. It's a gutsy call. Being able to point to John Stewart and the numbers he pulls is what I bet made it an idea worth investing in. I point this out because it's cool to see how that light mocking and finger poking has evolved over time. Hopefully there are many more evolutions and iterations to come.

[–]zlg5161 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Such as ¡JEFF!

[–]Eyezupguardian 235 points236 points  (12 children)

he doesn't afraid of anything either

[–][deleted] 252 points253 points  (4 children)

he has no scare

[–]AvsJoe 47 points48 points  (1 child)

Yeah, he's a pretty cool guy.

[–]Sil369 86 points87 points  (21 children)

He is my new Colbert.

[–]enolja 159 points160 points  (23 children)

I'm confused - how can a company sue an entire country?

Can't that country literally just say "No, fuck off, take your product elsewhere".

[–][deleted] 83 points84 points  (8 children)

they dig up contracts that the country has signed. And the risk of international trial is lose the lawsuit or other countries dont trade or place huge tariffs on the sued country.

[–][deleted] 44 points45 points  (7 children)

What would happen if say... Uruguay just completely ignored everything about this? As in ignored the letters, the invitation to the court trial, etc.

[–]Scrybatog 18 points19 points  (2 children)

Eventually their import would stop... as in countries would be forced by international law to stop sending any goods there until the issue is resolved, and they would suffer... like way worse than now. Even a small poor country relies almost entirely on the import / export of goods if they want to live with 1st world "essentials". Its messed up. Big tobacco really would put those people back in the stone age if they tried what your asking.

[–]I_titty_the_fool 205 points206 points  (4 children)

John Oliver is the only person who can make me watch a 18 minute video about political and social issues on reddit.

[–]Gimlis_Axes 185 points186 points  (6 children)

[–][deleted] 35 points36 points  (2 children)

While I dislike smoking let's be real here. Unlike heroin and shitting in peoples doorways smoking was for a long time a very acceptable thing in society and still is not far of today

1191 days, motherfuckers!

[–]sixstringzen 16 points17 points  (1 child)

Smoke Free 7 years and 2 months :-)

[–]Merlord 14 points15 points  (3 children)

Congrats! The hardest part is over! I'm currently 2 years smoke free, and I don't even have smoking dreams anymore (you know the ones, where you slip up and have a cigarette and then wake up feeling super guilty).

[–]jpruinc 44 points45 points  (2 children)

Smoked for 15 years. Stopped 2 1/2 years ago.

[–]1Riot1Ranger 74 points75 points  (49 children)

Just putting it out there but if you're not quite ready to give up the nicotine or motions but you want to get off analogs, you can join us in /r/electronic_cigarette

[–][deleted] 128 points129 points  (5 children)

They're calling them analogs? That's hilarious, but I prefer the tone of acoustic cigarettes.

[–][deleted] 16 points17 points  (1 child)

But can your acoustic cigs handle a humbucker? Didn't think so!

[–]catsdoroam 287 points288 points  (2 children)

That has to be one of the most stunning, funniest pieces of journalism I've seen in a while. John Oliver truly is a source of truth and humor while at the same time being a clever activist for just causes. Shout out to all those who work on his show and help make it happen!

[–]ssbobess 43 points44 points  (0 children)

I'm particularly impressed with the activist elements he tries to inject. Some of them don't seem very meaningful - I think he could do better - but some of them are hilarious and/or potentially impactful.

"Sold more than 800,000 copies in 2013". I think they answered their own question.

[–]Mormant 189 points190 points  (32 children)

They questioned why people still buy them not why they still sell them...

[–]gizmo1024[🍰] 67 points68 points  (4 children)

Because just like books, sometimes you want to hold them in your hands.

[–]Whiskeypants17 29 points30 points  (6 children)

Is 800k copies good or bad?

I mean at $10 an issue for a cool 8 million bucks.... How much did printing shipping models photographers writers editors etc etc all cost? Martha stewert could put on an apron and sell a cookbook that puts this to shame.

Edit- puts this profit margin to shame.

[–]YRYGAV 86 points87 points  (1 child)

They make money from ads in the magazine too.

[–][deleted] 51 points52 points  (9 children)

Because those free pictures on the internet have to come from somewhere.

[–][deleted] 82 points83 points  (6 children)

They mostly come from wine coolers and daddy issues...

[–]hoodedbob 421 points422 points  (26 children)

We should all do the Google+ tag right now.

Stop what you are doing right now this very moment and post this picture.

[–]jliechty13 61 points62 points  (7 children)

I am trying to but can't find a tag for Marlboro or PMI in the available tags.

Any suggestions?

[–]parkerlreed 52 points53 points  (1 child)

Just type #marlboro? Worked for me

[–]tunit000 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Just checked the Google Image Search for Marlboro. All images are pristine ads for cigarettes. No Jeff pics yet...

[–]BSpaceman 15 points16 points  (2 children)

I NEED a Jeff t-shirt

[–][deleted] 12 points13 points  (5 children)

The alcohol industry does exactly the same things against poor countries.

[–][deleted] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

What an awesome segment, I really enjoy John Oliver.

[–]fameistheproduct 47 points48 points  (5 children)

Fuck it, let's just rename Lung Cancer to Phillip Morris Cancer.

[–][deleted] 11 points12 points  (4 children)

Thats a nice idea except Phillip Morris et. al. are responsible for multiple types of cancers in smokers' mouths, throats, etc. not just lungs.

[–]fameistheproduct 18 points19 points  (1 child)

How about assigning a sponsor to a cancer? e.g. Not just Throat Cancer, Phillip Morris Throat Cancer.

Or just rename Cancer to Phillip Morris. - Hey, I Heard your dad died, sorry to hear that.

Thanks, yes he passed away two months ago. Lung Phillip Morris killed him in the end.

[–]jupiterkansas 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Just call it the Phillip Morris Disease.

[–]Sickfire22 223 points224 points  (32 children)

Nailed it. The true spiritual successor to Stewart

[–]jankisa 308 points309 points  (21 children)

I think he surpassed him in his first season.

I love Jon, don't get me wrong, but his format and schedule didn't really allow him to do big investigative and activist pieces like John Oliver does, John menages to churn out a mind blowing expose on almost weekly bases and I can honestly say I learned more from his show than any other news source last year.

[–]djrocksteady 131 points132 points  (3 children)

but his format and schedule didn't really allow him to do big investigative and activist pieces

That isn't it at all. Viacom owned the Daily Show, and Viacom makes a lot of money from advertising...so the Daily Show was not exactly allowed to piss off their advertisers...something that Oliver on HBO does not have to factor into his writing.

[–]aBrightIdea 13 points14 points  (1 child)

Why not both. Its hard to do through research in 24 hours but Viacom would definitely limit his possible targets. But why would Viacom care if John Stewart went after say the President of Ecuador

[–]ZeroQQ 53 points54 points  (0 children)

I didn't think he could pull it off. I'm happy to say I was wrong.

[–][deleted] 18 points19 points  (1 child)

Probably better. Stewart is witty, but he's better at playing the jokester than the type to take a serious stand and encourage action.

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah john Oliver does actual investigative journalist pieces with comedy mixed in while Stewart was mostly just headline news with comedy mixed in.

[–]Boughner 28 points29 points  (4 children)

Larry Wilmore tryna be the king but the ace is back

[–]Spaceopera07 17 points18 points  (1 child)

When I was in the Jordan during the World Cup games I saw several of these Marlboro booths at different game showings. When I took this photo the guy even offered me a cigarette. http://i.imgur.com/gIjTIZh.jpg http://i.imgur.com/NXZ9oCt.jpg

[–][deleted] 33 points34 points  (0 children)

We may be losing Jon Stewart, but we have you John Oliver. That segment was both informational and hilarious.

Also respect to HBO for renewing this great show.

[–]umbralbro 15 points16 points  (0 children)

He's really good at making me hate things I never think about.

[–]BoilerMaker11 42 points43 points  (5 children)

Now, when 2 Chainz was on Nancy Grace, she was all "look at this parent give their kid weed. This is what will happen when it's legalized".

Bet she doesn't have jack shit to say about tobacco with that smoking baby

[–][deleted] 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Good point! I think reasonable people can agree that children shouldn't be using tobacco or weed.

On the other hand, I don't find Ms. Grace to be reasonable.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

She wasn't trying to win the debate. "Nancy Grace gets owned by 2Chainz" gets more clicks than "Nancy Grace debates rapper, both make good points".

[–]oneofyou 7 points8 points  (2 children)

Even if PMI sues him and his show to death, when he had the public eye he did a great deal more good than a lot of others who bask in the glow of the publics adoration.

Good on ya John Oliver, well played sir.

[–]relightit 16 points17 points  (2 children)

where can i buy a jeff shirt

[–]Vodiodoh 48 points49 points  (3 children)

The comedic references he uses to explain these legal situations really work in bringing the point home while making you laugh.
