I rescued my Bonnie at one years old. She had been in the shelter for 4 months, overlooked because she was very withdrawn. She had been through a lot and was never comfortable with being picked up, but when she saw that I respected her boundaries and loved her no matter what, she quickly warmed up to me and would often sit in my lap and make air biscuits when I pet her tummy. She unfortunately passed suddenly last year at only 6 years old but I regret nothing. I loved loving her and being loved by her and it's been one of the greatest honors of my life to have been her guardian.
After she passed, we rescued another cat in need as I believe it's what she would want. He's a senior, about 12 years old. He used to live on the street before being rescued and his previous guardian passed away. He's an absolute snuggle bug. Daily, he "asks" for me to lay on the couch so he can sit on my chest for snuggles.
Definitely consider an older cat. If you do get a kitten, make sure it's from a rescue and try to adopt two at a time if there are multiple in a litter. Too many kittens are being bred on purpose when so many are homeless. I'm currently fostering 8 kittens that were relinquished by a breeder to a rescue. I love them all very much, but breeding kittens was very irresponsible as so, so many need homes and the rescues are bursting at the seams.
