What's that quote from Poe (attributed to Francis Bacon)? "There is no exquisite beauty without some strangeness in the proportion."

[–]mechapoitier 380 points381 points  (52 children)

Yeah it’s weird how it works. There’s such a thing as having proportions that are all so “ideal” that it’s boring instead of beautiful.

Truly stunning people tend to have a thing (or two) that’s unusual about their face, sometimes way off.

[–]gfunk55 93 points94 points  (1 child)

There’s such a thing as having proportions that are all so “ideal” that it’s boring instead of beautiful.

So that's why I can't get a date. I'm too perfect

[–]oursecondcoming 14 points15 points  (0 children)

You can't be too ugly, or too beautiful. Have to be medium ugly.

[–]industrialblue 100 points101 points  (0 children)

Stunning is a good way to put it - beautiful but also something different that takes you aback.

[–]BigMax 66 points67 points  (17 children)

If I recall (it’s been a while and she wasn’t very famous other than that SNL screwup) Ashley Simpson was an example of that. Pretty woman who had a nose that wasn’t “perfect.”

So she got a nose job, which generic standards of beauty might say looked better, but she went right to what that implies, generic beauty, which doesn’t really stand out especially in Hollywood.

[–]ARCoati 128 points129 points  (11 children)

Jennifer Grey is pretty open about the fact that getting a nose job immediately ended her acting career. I can understand why she was self-conscious about her nose specifically, but she was a beautiful and distinctive looking young woman who just became a generic pretty face in the crowd.

[–][deleted] 42 points43 points  (3 children)

I remember being so shocked when I saw her after the nose job. She looked like a completely different (and forgettable) person.

[–]lizlemonworld 5 points6 points  (2 children)

It was years before I realized she played the first Mindy on Friends.

[–]Moddelba 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Oh I loved me some pre nose job Jennifer Grey.

[–]TheSonOfDisaster 32 points33 points  (3 children)

I thought the same from Natasha O'Keeffe from peaky blinders. The first season she was on i thought she had such a unique nose/look then she got a nose job and became like a thousand other actresses

[–]jawbone7896 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I loved her original nose, she looked like a Roman statue.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Naw. She’s perfect

[–]PeterNinkimpoop 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I was so bummed when Ashlee got that nose job. She looked a lot like me and it was awesome to see someone famous with an unconventional look especially at that time when it was all blonde and ski slope noses. Then she went blonde and got a ski slope nose.

[–]Suspicious-Kiwi816 74 points75 points  (15 children)

Bella Hadid has the “closest to perfect golden ratio face” and imo Anya is prettier.

[–]Islandgirl1444 35 points36 points  (2 children)

How much "tweaking" has been done?

[–]AntRedoids 32 points33 points  (1 child)

Bella’s had her entire face done. Check out her before and afters. Different person! She regrets not keeping her old nose tho

[–]Altruistic-Text3481 65 points66 points  (2 children)

It’s Anya’s wide set eyes. I saw her in The Witch. I knew nothing about her but I was mesmerized by her beauty.

[–]WhtvrCms2Mnd 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Bella Hadid has (bought) the “….”

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

As a man who is pushing sixty she reminds me of other models or movie stars that were pushed on the public.

Uma Thurman is one for example.

Yes beauty still grabs my attention but personality is more important to me.

    [–]Nikx 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This happens to a lot of reality TV stars, particularly within the Bachelor franchise. The recurring characters all seem to get the exact same dental veneers and generic nose job; sometimes I joke that it’s a condition of their contacts.

    [–]Louisvanderwright 225 points226 points  (36 children)

Yeah and people who turn out to be "beautiful" adults often look weird as children.

The classic nerd takes off her glasses trope.

    [–]NeitherDuckNorGoose 49 points50 points  (5 children)

Dunno, I looked weird as a kid and I'm really ugly as an adult.

    [–]Get-Degerstromd 15 points16 points  (4 children)

Start fuckin’ with your hair, beard, or makeup. No reason to just accept anything you’re not happy about.

But if you are fine with it, then no worries! Beauty is relative after all.

    [–]NeitherDuckNorGoose 5 points6 points  (3 children)

The two things I hate the most are my hair and weight, but my hair I can't do much as my body decided I'll start going bald at 15 and my weight is very hard to manage with how messed up my body got from the tumor on my tyroid.

    [–]Get-Degerstromd 6 points7 points  (1 child)

I’m sorry to hear that friend.

You could shave your head! Just gotta commit to it.

    [–]NeitherDuckNorGoose 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I've been going with a shaved head for 7 years now, but it still feels weird to be forced into that one specific hairstyle that doesn't fit me well.

    [–]lunawiccasirena 74 points75 points  (22 children)

People say that when you're beautiful as a kid, you'll look plainer as an adult and then vice versa. I've seen it with a lot and personally I think I'm more pretty now than when I was a kid

    [–]sillyadam94 45 points46 points  (1 child)

People say that, but it’s not true. At least it isn’t an indisputable truth of life. There’s simply far too many exceptions to the rule. Plus it is worth noting that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. People viewed as “traditionally ugly,” are still attractive to a lot of people.

    [–][deleted] 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It's kind of amazing how someone carries themselves (confident, charismatic) makes such a big difference in how hot they are. Charisma goes such a long way. It's kind of mind blowing really.

    [–]MarcoMaroon 69 points70 points  (8 children)

I was ugly as shit as a kid and now I'm just slightly less ugly as shit.

But I'm cool with it and am confident in myself so it's all good.

    [–]StinkieBritches 24 points25 points  (5 children)

That damages a child though, because when people think you're ugly, they tell you.

My babysitter used to line me and my sisters up from ugliest to prettiest and I was always the ugliest. I grew up to be an attractive teenager and adult, but have suffered with terrible body dysmorphia my whole life because of it. I constantly worry about my weight no matter what the scale says, I don't leave my house without makeup, and I never trust a compliment.

    [–]Louisvanderwright 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think it's more that beautiful kids might grow up into reasonably good looking adults, but super model type "beauty" as our society defines it actually requires some pretty extreme features. Like that little girl with the odd high cheekbones or the little boy with an abnormally square jaw turn into the supermodel or gigachad aesthetic.

    [–]Sharchir 109 points110 points  (45 children)

Never read that, but it is how I feel. Now I can express it more eloquently than ‘“I’m more attracted to people who are ‘this side of ugly’”

    [–]NickCageNTheBadBees 42 points43 points  (41 children)

The French call it “jolie laide”

    [–]Sharchir 27 points28 points  (38 children)

I believe Mick Jagger is often used to exemplify the French phrase - isn’t he?

    [–]CosmicPennyworth 26 points27 points  (37 children)

I have heard people talk about Adam Driver this way

    [–][deleted] 18 points19 points  (3 children)

    Same. John Oliver namely.

    [–]WarsledSonarman 5 points6 points  (1 child)

John’s too horny for that boy.

    [–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

His Adam driver quips geek me out every fricking time

    [–]Shdwrptr 15 points16 points  (31 children)

I’ve never understood the fascination with Adam Driver. The guy has never looked attractive in anything I’ve seen him in.

His acting has been passable to great though

    [–]foxscribbles 32 points33 points  (12 children)

I don't understand the Adam Driver attraction on a physical level. But he comes across as very likable/charismatic in the interviews I've seen of him. So I get the attraction from that perspective.

Then again, I am unreasonably attracted to Willem Dafoe for some reason. So I have ZERO room to judge anyone for their attractions. lol.

    [–]Jarlaxlesplume 27 points28 points  (4 children)

    Cause he hangs dong, duh

    [–]JTHMM249 6 points7 points  (0 children)

    Defoe was in Thundergun?

    [–]craigularperson 5 points6 points  (2 children)

One must always remember how an entire set just got perplexed by the sheer size of his appendage.

    [–]GiftedStrumpet 8 points9 points  (8 children)

I think Star Wars gave his acting a bad rep.

Silence and a marriage story were both good reminders for me that this dude went to Juilliard lol

    [–]greenieknits 2 points3 points  (5 children)

he was cute in Girls, he was also just sort of an awful character who was difficult to like

    [–]Altruistic-Text3481 2 points3 points  (4 children)

I stopped watching girls because I hated his character.

    [–]I_only_post_here 5 points6 points  (3 children)

wasn't the entire cast of Girls kinda just awful characters who were difficult to like?

I still watched the show because I mostly liked the writing, and I felt the characters were fairly 'real', but not especially likable.

    [–]greenieknits 5 points6 points  (0 children)

written and starred by an extremely unlikable woman so completely unsurprising

    [–]kernel-troutman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've always wondered if there was a term for this. Thank you internet stranger.

    [–]missdeweydell 2 points3 points  (0 children)

    also moche-mignon. "ugly cute"

    [–]Mulattto 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I like to say that every extremely beautiful person got a little “alien” to them

    [–]Tyrilean 27 points28 points  (1 child)

I prefer to say that I like interesting looking people. “Classically attractive” is fine, but it’s boring.

    [–][deleted] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

“Classically attractive” is, quite literally, the most average of all faces

    https://petapixel.com/2013/05/28/what-averaged-face-photographs-reveal-about-human-beauty/

    [–]cyberpunk1Q84 27 points28 points  (4 children)

That’s sort of how I feel about a lot of things. Like with singing - sure, you can be a technically good singer, but if it doesn’t have some type of unique strangeness to it, it’s just generic to me.

    [–]BulljiveBots 9 points10 points  (1 child)

The reason why those singing tv contests never appealed to me. Everyone trying to warble like Whitney or Mariah but they have something that made them special. I found most of the “winners” from those shows boring.

    [–]cyberpunk1Q84 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yup. I watched the Voice a long time ago and there was one contestant that stood out to me, but she was eliminated. She ended up having a great solo career on her own, though, so that was great. Her name’s Melanie Martinez and she makes super weird music but a ton of people like her.

    [–]Jesus_Fuckn_Christ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

    There is beauty in imperfection

    [–]Greg_the_Zombie 4 points5 points  (0 children)

"Nothing Worth Loving Isn't Askew" - Lemon Demon

    [–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've had this theory for years that for movie stars, being distinctive or interesting looking is more important than being perfectly attractive. So many of them are attractive but odd-looking people with magnetic personalities. I think being inherently interesting-looking is a key to having screen presence. They're easy to caricature, instantly recognizable- it's like your weird features are your brand.

But, the quote you quoted puts it much better than I could

    [–]MadMasterMad 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That's why I stay fat, my face is too perfect. Gotta balance that out.

    [–]ARCoati 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"Its Wabi Sabi, like the wart on that supermodel's face."

    [–]katylawlll 746 points747 points  (87 children)

Weren’t people making fun of her looks in the last post about her like a day or two ago? So I can believe it.

    [–][deleted] 318 points319 points  (47 children)

Yeah it was super unfortunate, I mean all the comments saying how she looks like Sid from ice age

    [–][deleted] 156 points157 points  (0 children)

    Lmao stupid sexy Sid

    [–]override367 68 points69 points  (12 children)

    knees too pointy, etc

    [–]5exy-melon 7 points8 points  (3 children)

    Her knees are pointy?

    [–]override367 12 points13 points  (0 children)

    ancient internet reference

    https://knowyourmeme.com/memes/210-would-not-bang

TLDR: one of the neckbeards reacted to a post of Stacy Keibler by saying she was a 2/10 and referenced her "pointy knees" from the long-long-ago-internet

    [–][deleted] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

    old reference

    [–]Vague_Intentions 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah huge turn off 2/10 would not date.

    [–]a-m-watercolor 40 points41 points  (5 children)

For me, it's the fact that her middle toe is longer than her big toe.

    [–]MachineGrunt 18 points19 points  (1 child)

    Middle toe gang here!

    [–]hghghghghghg56 4 points5 points  (1 child)

    Someone been to wikifeet

    [–]EMPlRES 59 points60 points  (10 children)

And as usual, it’s always coming from someone who don’t show their face anywhere.

    [–]yo-chill 32 points33 points  (6 children)

I think she’s attractive but that is hilarious lmao

    [–]forever87 30 points31 points  (5 children)

there's a few attractive actresses that have been said to have a gollum "likeness"

    honorable mentions:

    • Florence Pugh

    • Jodie Comer

    • Dove Cameron

    [–]Ruthlessrabbd 26 points27 points  (1 child)

Okay Gollum has some beautiful eyes though let's be real

    [–]BonGaru00 8 points9 points  (0 children)

TIL I would fuck Sid from Ice Age

    [–]abibofile 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ha, I’ve heard Benedict Cumberbatch say the exact same thing about himself in interviews. Apparently Sid from Ice Age just looks like a certain type of British person.

    [–]alexjaness 5 points6 points  (0 children)

is that an insult? because I would do so many terrible things with/to Sid.

    [–]PrettyOddWoman 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Lmao a bunch of freaking REDDITORS have the nerve to rag on this chick for her looks? She’s goregous and I’m pretty sure at least 60% of redditors look like a mixture of shrek, a bridge troll, and the monsters from the movie The Descent.

Pure projection on their part, in other words. Bunch of shallow, insecure incels. Sheesh.

    [–]HealMySoulPlz 138 points139 points  (2 children)

Yeah I think she's really beautiful but she does have an unusual face shape, which probably was more pronounced when she was younger. Also children are assholes.

    [–]dpgproductions 58 points59 points  (0 children)

Reminds me of the Family Guy episode where Uma Thurman had an “eye wrangler” on set because her eyes kept drifting further away from each other. People will find a way to make fun of anyone if you give them a chance.

    [–]IdlePerfectionist 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah I remember back when she first appeared in Peaky Blinders, a lot of people dislike her character and called her face weird and all

    [–]DonDove 44 points45 points  (28 children)

Don't get it, she's beautiful because she's different. Not everyone is the same.

    [–]Slaphappydap 49 points50 points  (17 children)

Someone in the comments of a video when Queen's Gambit came out said he couldn't enjoy the show because all these men were throwing themselves at this ugly girl and it took him out of the show, because the show wanted to pretend she was beautiful.

It was interesting to see how someone just couldn't understand how people could be attracted to someone he didn't find attractive, and who couldn't understand that in addition to her face she had a beautiful mind.

I say that not necessarily to criticize the person but it was interesting to read how his brain had one standard of beauty and it simply couldn't accept anything else. Like he was having an existential crisis in real-time.

    [–]WhoIsFrancisPuziene 33 points34 points  (10 children)

The interesting part is that some men need to be attracted to a character to enjoy the media at all

    [–]I_am_vladi 16 points17 points  (2 children)

i think its sad actually. Like how limited is your brain? The all deciding question is "does it make my pepe hard? "

    ridiculous!

    [–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (1 child)

It's definitely sad. Unfortunately it's also a widespread opinion among a lot of men. Which is why it's tough to convince Hollywood to make interesting female characters with interesting faces. It affects the amount of viewership and ticket sales they get, which is so fucking frustrating.

    [–]WhoIsFrancisPuziene 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep. I’d love to see more “mediocre”, “odd”, “ugly” women, of any/all ages, ethnicities and body types. Someday…

    [–]fluffy_pancake93 8 points9 points  (1 child)

Yeah, once i read on twitter the dude said he doesn't enjoy watching The Witcher because he finds the actress plays Yennefer unattractive, he even went further saying he generally doesn't find indians attractive at all

    [–]Ruthlessrabbd 11 points12 points  (1 child)

I've seen similarly commentary about Maggie Gyllenhaal in The Dark Knight, how Christian Bale had to do "heavy lifting and pretend that she was beautiful". She isn't someone I find attractive but it's not unbelievable to think someone would

Entirely different story if a script has characters compliment someone that doesn't line up with how they appear. Like if a man was said to have a jawline that could cut diamonds but it was actually quite round or something

Also for The Queen's Gambit, Beth was considered beautiful but also cunning and unique. She had an element of mystery surrounding her in combination with confidence and a big ego. Anya Taylor Joy is drop dead gorgeous imo but those non physical traits of her character could also be alluring to people, believably so.

    [–]george_costanza1234 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Maggie caught the worse end of the stick because she was replacing Katie Holmes, who was definitely one of Hollywood’s beauty icons in the 2000s. So that comparison was extremely unfair to her.

    [–]Ursula2071 13 points14 points  (0 children)

We saw the ad for the Menu last night and I told my husband she is so stunning because she looks so different. I think she is beautiful. And she’s a great actress too.

    [–]A_Gent_4Tseven 4 points5 points  (0 children)

    I think she’s pretty too.

    [–]Garlador 204 points205 points  (12 children)

Beauty is definitely in the eye of the beholder.

I always thought my nose was too big. My wife thinks it’s attractive. Other opinions rapidly lost impact.

    [–]notnickthrowaway 36 points37 points  (7 children)

Well, you know what they say about people with big noses, don’t you?

    Big nose, big feet.

    [–]Feistybritches 9 points10 points  (1 child)

I think a nose bump or distinctive nose in general is really nice looking tbh. I have a basic nose and I’m fine with it but I think that in the age of plastic surgery, unique features are really attractive!

    [–]Dantheking94 367 points368 points  (21 children)

I think she’s beautiful, but I’m sure she had to grow into her looks.

    [–]Affectionate_Fly1413 128 points129 points  (8 children)

And the glamour is more affordable i bet.

I dont remember how it goes but something like , there's no ugly women, just poor ones.

    [–]DavantesWashedButt 39 points40 points  (5 children)

Oh no there still be some ugly ass people. Money can’t fix everything

Well, no, look at Elon Musk now versus Elon Musk before he was in the public eye. He's not gorgeous now, granted, but he used to look like a fuckin' Garbage Pail Kid, and now he's at least normal-looking-ish; he's an example.

      [–]UlrichZauber 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They say there's no cure for stupid, but extreme luck sure is extending the patient's life.

      [–]Dantheking94 12 points13 points  (1 child)

      That’s very true too.

      [–]darthluke414 69 points70 points  (3 children)

Her face is unique and I imagin that with the wrong hair/clothing style it could look way less lovely.

      [–]AssaultEagle 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This makes a person, when you’re a child it’s very easy to be persecuted for being weird looking or being chubby. I admit I was a chubby and quite round looking child and got bullied for it, as I grew everything changed as did the perception of me. Just goes to affirm the fact that appearance definitely has some correlation in success in multiple facets of life, as terrible or unfair as that may be. Unfortunately from a psychological point of view attractiveness tends to also beget entitlement (Hinsz, 2001).

        [–]lithiun 262 points263 points  (27 children)

I could see that. Regardless of her upbringing people will find things to poke at. Already in this thread, people have called her “beautiful in an alien looking sort if way.” Wtf?

        Let her be.

        [–]Darth_Balthazar 53 points54 points  (5 children)

Its the same way people find benedict cumberbach attractive. I woyld use the same scentence to describe him in fact.

        [–]DooglyOoklin 76 points77 points  (15 children)

She has the same thing as Tilda. An ethereal and otherworldly beauty.

        [–]Hs39163 44 points45 points  (3 children)

Another word for “otherworldly” is… “alien”.

        [–]OddEpisode 21 points22 points  (0 children)

7 out of 10 Facehuggers agree.

The other 3 just wanna deposit eggs down your throat.

        [–]NickMillerChicago 13 points14 points  (1 child)

Seriously, I’m sick of the negative connotations surrounding aliens. Aliens can be beautiful. Look at avatar. I’d marry a 9 foot tall blue person in a heartbeat.

        [–]BoredAtWorkOU 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yup. She makes me think of Fae beauty: otherworldly but alluring.

        [–]YoItsYaBoy_Pat 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yea in school I got called ugly so often I somewhat believed it. But I never had massive problems with girls so I didn’t mind. Only when I got to college and girls were more open with compliments did I learn that I was at least a bit attractive.

        [–]ResultUnited 78 points79 points  (7 children)

well I mean she is the most German looking Argentinian in the world.

        EDIT

this is obviously a joke. Everyone knows Argentinians are actually Italian.

        [–]ctrl_alt_excrete 84 points85 points  (4 children)

Given the events of the mid to late 40s, I'd expect there are quite a lot of German looking Argentinians, no?

        [–]Stormshow 8 points9 points  (2 children)

Most of Argentina's Germans were there long before WW2. Paraguay on the other hand...

        [–]MadKitKat 5 points6 points  (1 child)

        This!!

I got German ancestors and they came here in the early 1900s… so basically my great-great-grandparents (grandma’s grandparents)

Most Europeans, not only Germans, came at around this time

By the time the nazis arrived, we really weren’t having those immigration waves anymore. Sure, immigrants still came (and still come), but not en mass like at the turn of the century

        [–]CTeam19 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got German ancestors and they came here in the early 1900s… so basically my great-great-grandparents (grandma’s grandparents)

This kind of thing always cracks me up/blows my mind for generational differences as my Grandpa's grandparents weren't even alive at that point:

        • Me(1987-Present)

        • Grandpa(1902-2001)

        • Grandpa's Dad(1861-1923)

        • Grandpa's Grandpa(1811-1868) and Grandpa's Grandma(1818-1888)

Likewise a 98 year old lady who passed away in 2014 and I share that same Great-Great-Grandpa I mentioned above.

        [–]manly_support 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Phát is a legit vietnamese name. they might have mistaken you for a vietnamese kid

        [–]Thisisntmyaccount24 7 points8 points  (3 children)

That’s also possible, I fucking loved me some banh mi! Maybe that’s why they called me Phat!

        [–]jacksonattack 24 points25 points  (6 children)

Yeah I’m way fucking sick of this headline.

        [–]SCGSC 21 points22 points  (5 children)

Especially from people who make insane amounts of money based at least partially on their appearance. These people just cannot get enough attention.

        [–][deleted] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

She looks like a real life hot elf.

        [–]mazzicc 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Kids hate what is different. As much as many try to idolize “oh, kids treat everyone the same and learn hate from adults”, if you’re different as a kid, you’re a target.

It can be a physical feature, the clothes and possessions you have, or even just your name. They will lock on to it and mock you for it just to be accepted by the other kids.

        [–]Ok-Tooth4089 6 points7 points  (0 children)

She has an exotic look to her. I find her quite attractive. Maybe she can use her platform to fight bullying?

        [–]blueyork 57 points58 points  (13 children)

She's oddly beautiful like Tilda swinton

        [–]deemoorah 8 points9 points  (2 children)

I think that's why marvel hired both of them and benedict Cumberbatch to play their prominent magic characters. They all look 'odd' in a good way

        [–][deleted] 30 points31 points  (3 children)

I know what you mean in that they both have a unique beauty, but to be real, Anya is way more conventionally attractive than Tilda Swinton

        [–]eyre-quotes 21 points22 points  (2 children)

They both have an ethereal quality about them

        [–][deleted] 7 points8 points  (1 child)

        Yes!! Ethereal. That’s the word

        [–]Vendevende 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was thinking other worldly, but ethereal has more magic. Thanks!

        [–]wundershowzen24 92 points93 points  (19 children)

I always harassed the gorgeous people. “Run home Anya, run home and be a famous model or actor and make a bunch of money because you’re gonna be so famous and beautiful, IDIOT!”

        [–]Puzzleheaded-Ad-2746 71 points72 points  (15 children)

Listen man, her face isn’t traditionally beautiful. I can understand how a younger, poorer, less put together person that looks like her could’ve been the object of ridicule.

        [–]Bobert_Manderson 12 points13 points  (1 child)

Dude kids are fucking stupid little sociopaths. They’ll make fun of you because your big toe is crooked. It sucks that most kids won’t learn how to ignore the idiots who insult them until later in life.

        [–][deleted] 18 points19 points  (2 children)

        She comes from wealth though.

        [–]TreeDollarFiddyCent 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Well of course... else she wouldn't have made it in Hollywood.

        [–]silverliege 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What a shitty thing to do. Just sounds like standard bullying to me.

        [–]Cp7067 25 points26 points  (1 child)

Pretty sure 99.9% of people were bullied in high school lol

        [–]achenx75 29 points30 points  (2 children)

Most everybody was bullied in some way in school for how they looked.

        [–]mournthewolf 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah exactly. Even hot people get bullied sometimes. You often get bullied for just standing out. If you are too ugly or too pretty or too poor or too rich. Groups who band together can bully. Most of all the bullies I knew in school were ugly as fuck but they had a lot of other ugly people around them.

        [–]Dulcedoll 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yep, it's why I get annoyed when I see comments like "I was bullied for X as a kid and now people are making it trendy?"

Kids are assholes. If you didn't have that physical trait, they'd find something else to bully you for. Too skinny, too fat, too average — the actual characteristics were just a pretense.

        [–]Dyerssorrow 37 points38 points  (1 child)

Went to school abroad...drops out at 16 to pursue a modeling career.....

Oh no, times are tough. The only hopes of me visiting Buenos Aires would have been winning the showcase on the Price is Right

        [–]UnexpectedRu 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I saw people making fun of her looks just a few days ago and I honestly don't get it. Anya is so pretty to me, she looks like a fairytale character.

        [–]ThePNWGamingDad 16 points17 points  (1 child)

She looks like a normal human being to me…

        [–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

She has that weird eye thing like the Ariel actress.

        [–]thewarfreak 49 points50 points  (13 children)

        Like a sexy alien?

        [–]ggsupreme 7 points8 points  (0 children)

She’s my type of weird looking let me tell ya!

        [–]ryanapeters3 13 points14 points  (1 child)

She has a unique-looking face and kids are assholes. This tracks.

        [–]mykidsthinkimcool 21 points22 points  (0 children)

        So... she went to school?

        [–]Utterlybored 99 points100 points  (31 children)

She’s beautiful, but in an alien life form kind of way.

        [–]DonDove 13 points14 points  (8 children)

Dunno if I'm gonna get a pandlin', but remember that weird girl from the old PS1 commericals? Anya reaaally reminds me of her but alot prettier.

(And yes I know the actual actor had exaggerated features for the commercial)

        [–]DytchDoc1972 2 points3 points  (0 children)

She is not alone. Kids have no filter from their brain to their mouths to stop them. I hate it so bad and can relate.

        [–]MetalsDeadAndSoAmI 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is incredibly common, as kids, differences are picked out and “bad.” But as adults, those unique differences stop being ugly, and instead become beauty. All how we learn to appreciate differences as opposed to ostracize them.

I find more often than not, the most truly beautiful people are strangely unique in appearance.

        [–]briemacdigital 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was bullied once cuz i wore so much make up i looked like a clown. and i blame my mom cuz she never taught me how to be a woman. had to learn on my own.

now i don’t wear much make up and i look like i can beat the crap out of anyone. so i got my intimidation factor to thank except now the bullies are on social media. grown ass people safe behind their computer so they can’t get hurt by my fists when they call me names. oh the world has bubble wrapped mean people.

        [–]JoshAllensBallbag 3 points4 points  (0 children)

        Yeah kids are dicks

        [–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

She's incredibly gorgeous, and I'm not saying that in a way to diminish the way she feels, I'm just saying. That's heartbreaking.

        [–][deleted] 20 points21 points  (7 children)

I had the same problem. I was so hot the other kids hated me.

        [–]Runnah5555 5 points6 points  (1 child)

The world can be a lonely place for us beautiful people.

        [–]DonDove 2 points3 points  (0 children)

        Oh cruel, cruel world!

        [–]UraeusCurse 6 points7 points  (0 children)

She’s laughing all the way to the bank. Fuck ‘em.

        [–]Wisex 6 points7 points  (1 child)

Dude so I got a younger sister going through high school right now and some of the shit she tells me that goes on and what people say is fucking wild to me sometimes... Guess its not something I had to deal with as a dude but girls really just be nasty to each other

        [–][deleted] 19 points20 points  (15 children)

Well they ain’t bullying her now. Fell in love with Anya after The Queens Gambit. She’s hot, unique look to her, she should be proud of that.

        [–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (13 children)

I think she is, given that ever since the chess movie (edit: show, for fuck’s sake) two years ago, she’s shot 6 more movies

        [–]Anton41PW 10 points11 points  (0 children)

She looks like a friends sister I grew up with. Her nickname was rat beaver. Very pretty.

        [–]pobrefauno 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think she's pretty cute, a unique look.

        [–]Iamtim92 2 points3 points  (0 children)

same. but i’m a normal person and it doesn’t matter

        [–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can see people living in the area where they live and they look so beautiful.

        [–]KillCreatures 2 points3 points  (0 children)

These celebrities just cant stand being out of the spotlight. Disgusting.

        [–]Icy-Cockroach4515 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Regardless of whether you think she's beautiful or not, she definitely stands out and has a distinctive look. I'd definitely turn my head to look if she passed by me, even if she wasn't famous.

        [–]TheAsianTroll 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Kids made fun of me for my eyes (I'm Asian). I'm not surprised they found something to make fun of, kids will literally make fun of anything about someone.

        [–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not downplaying what happened to her but genuinely curious. Has anyone ever NOT been made fun of for their looks in some way?

        [–]d_e_l_u_x_e 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Being different and unique in high school isn’t seen as popular but the entertainers we listen to and watch were those unique different kids in school that people made fun of.

It’s a difficult spot to be in, if you are to be different and unique it sometimes doesn’t pay off until later in life when confidence in your uniqueness is seen as a strength and being different sets you apart from everyone else in the business.

        [–]DoctorPapaJohns 2 points3 points  (0 children)

        Lmao what?? She’s gorgeous

        [–]dafuk87 2 points3 points  (0 children)

        Well joke’s on them.

        [–]BitterLeif 7 points8 points  (6 children)

I read a study that mixed race kids are bullied (including violent bullying) at a rate of 2-3 times the baseline. All other races were at about the same level on the bar graph, but the mixed race kids were getting hit hard. It's depressing, and I think it's the result of awful parenting.

        [–]Mochashaft 13 points14 points  (3 children)

I’m mixed, and can definitely see this being true. It’s not just parenting, it’s tribalism.

Spent my entire high school career being bullied by everyone because I didn’t “belong” to either group.

        [–]Ghstfce 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Tribalism plays more into that parenting I believe. That's why it's important to teach our children that unique differences should be celebrated, not ridiculed. No two people (aside from identical twins) are exactly alike, and that's what makes us awesome.

        [–]LouieMumford 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Was with you until awful parenting. I think a more likely explanation is that they struggle to find their “place” among peer groups. I know my ex wife (who was also my high school girlfriend) struggled with this. She wasn’t black enough to hang out with the “black kids” and was always looked at as “different” by the white kids.

        [–]contacts_eyes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Im hoping he meant the bullies parents were awful parents, not the mixed kids parents.

        [–]ragepanda1960 7 points8 points  (1 child)

I can see her having an awkward ass puberty

        [–]Ironyfree_annie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My ass also had an awkward puberty

        [–][deleted] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Least she now has money, success, and countless people calling her pretty. Plenty of people are bullied and get none of that after

        [–]MIKE_THE_KILLER 6 points7 points  (1 child)

Well doesn't matter now because I think she's hot AF
