Everyone saying bell peppers have a strong flavor makes no sense to me. Even in stuff where they feature prominently (fajitas, stuffed peppers, etc) they don't have an overpowering flavor in my experience. Very confusing.

It also seems very strange to complain about vegetables tasting like vegetables. What else are they supposed to taste like?

I want Shad Excommunicated.

Indoctrination is extremely effective -- it takes a lot of time and effort to overcome it. I know it's hard to understand when you haven't been part of it yourself, but the fact that the church exists still shows how effective the indoctrination is.

I grew up Mormon and I would say Shad's pretty close to average when it comes to his beliefs, but most Mormons are better at keeping them masked.

They were quoting Wikipedia

But your church has always involved itself in legislation and politics.

Here's an article from 1995 that was published in your church's newspaper talking about the LDS church's actions to ban same-sex marriage in Hawaii.

With support of the church's leadership in Salt Lake City, the three representatives Wednesday filed a notice of appeal asking the Hawaii Supreme Court to allow them to become a party to a lawsuit that was filed against the state by three homosexual couples. The three couples sued the state for denying them marriage licenses...

"We are urging the court to support Hawaii's families and not undermine them by radically redefining the institution of marriage," said Donald L. Hallstrom, a regional representative of the church in Hawaii.

"If the lower court's ruling is not overturned, Hawaii could be the first state to legalize homosexual and lesbian marriages. Gay couples could then be married in Hawaii, and other states could be required to legally recognize those marriages," Elder Hallstrom said.

Edit: this Donald L. Hallstrom is still a general authority today.

I grew up in California and was in high school in 2008 when Proposition 8 was placed on the ballot -- a constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriage. I watched people get up at Fast & Testimony meeting and talk about how gay marriage was wrong, and my former bishop handed out signs against gay marriage in the parking lot. In Utah, the church recruited BYU students to volunteer in call centers and campaign to ban gay marriage.

And rewinding back to the beginning, the Mormons practiced bloc voting, with Joseph Smith telling his followers who to vote for. This practice was the one of the primary causes of the expulsion of Mormons from the state of Missouri.

How do you plan for a house down payment 10 years in the future?

HealMySoulPlz
commented

This is slightly tangential, but postdocs are essentially a scam and if you don't get a tenure track job straight out of school you should strongly consider going straight into industry -- only around 10% of postdocs successfully get into a full-time academic position.

Aa far as the house goes, you'll want to use an ordinary (taxable) brokerage account and put it in a broad-market index fund. I would strongly consider opening a Roth IRA as well and contributing what you can, simce your age will make that very powerful.

How Do People Keep Up With Escrow Shortages?!

The odds of succeeding at contesting the assessed value are baaically proportional to the value of your house -- rich people with lawyers usually win.

I honestly feel uncomfortable at Church and I need to vent.

It may be 'officially non political' on paper, but in practice the church is as political as it can get away with being. They will call LDS elected officials and tell them how the church wants them to vote on certain issues.

Fifth Ideal Radiant passive abilities?

HealMySoulPlz
commented

This is a great and logical theory. My only problem is that Brandon Sanderson has said that Cosmere books will not include "flight" as a straight-up power because he finds it boring.

I agree that the fifth ideal has to come with some kind of major power-up but I don't think it will be flight.

Sure. There's lower population, the weather' s worse, and it's farther from the ocean. And of course there's a couple of industries where employment is very concentrated in LA or SF. But for the vast majority of people (those who aren't in tech or entertainment) what's so great about LA when compared to the inland cities?

Yeah it definitely has warped your expectations. Here's a house for just under $400K in Sacramento, and $400K in Fresno

For 'only' 1.3 million here's a 5 acre mountain property outside of Eureka.

There's a lot of California outside of the crazy expensive areas.

Mormon Apologists, here is another for you to explain away.

It might be the dates? It looks like it predates Noah's flood & the Jaredite narrative. But we already have evidence of humans in North America around 20,000 years ago which is way better to use for that.

PIMO VS PIIO it might be splitting hairs, what do you think?

HealMySoulPlz
commented

I would just call that a "struggling testimony" or something like ProgMo (progressive Mormon) or "nuamced". Typically PIMO means people who don't believe in the church but attend because of familial obligations, it has nothing to do with laziness or complacency.

As for me I'm not a member of the church, nor do I attend. We could call that POMO. I've found no tenable method to make the church work for me intellectually -- it's three strikes are being false, being harmful, and being boring.

Would a chainmail made from cold rolled steel be stronger than if it were made of butted mild steel?

HealMySoulPlz
commented

Usually cold rolled steel is just mild steel. Butted chaimmail is not going to be particularly strong no matter what metal you make it from.
