Yet another question for those who upgraded their Ally X SSD’s to larger ones.

The cloud recovery seems to be just fine, I’ve done it so many times on my OG Ally, and just recently too. I’ve always used cloud recovery since day one and never gave me any troubles. I’m just wondering now if there’s something up with the Ally X I just bought.

Hey, I’m doing a cloud recovery on an Ally X right now and this error keeps popping up during the process when windows is restarting and doing its thing.

“The instruction at 0x00007FFA7C703ACA referenced memory at 0x0000000000000024. The memory could not be written.”

Any idea if it’s an issue or not? I haven’t seen it happen at any time when I was doing a cloud recovery on the OG Ally. I’ve done tons of cloud recovery’s on multiple OG Ally’s over the last year and never saw that error message once during the process.

Never saw this error before up to now on my new Ally X. Has anyone noticed this happening on their Ally X during the cloud recovery process? I thought it might have been something up with the new SSD that I was putting into it, so I popped the stock 1TB drive back in and did the cloud recovery on that again, and I’m still getting the memory error message.

I’m wondering have I got a dud X, is it worth exchanging for another?

Turns out it’s not the drive itself. I put back in the original 1TB SSD into the X and started a cloud restore again, still getting that memory could not be written error during the process.

This is only a new X from the store, I might return it and see if another unit is any better.

The drive I’m using is brand new and never been used. I’m doing a cloud recovery and upgrading the SSD in the X.

So shouldn’t it be totally clean and without any partitions on it? The error message keeps popping up during the cloud recovery process when windows is doing its thing and installing the fresh OS and drivers on the Ally X. I was just wondering what the error was all about and if it’s something that can cause headaches down the road.

For all of you that upgraded your SSDs... Yes, another SSD post

Some dude on here said that drive with heatsink killed his Ally X after a few weeks because it melted the battery cable wires from resting on the heatsink.

I just made a post asking the same question a few days ago, it’s just a few posts down from yours. Here it is, you should get your answer from there.

Question about using Kapton tape to secure heatsink to SSD
Question

Hey, I’m wondering can anyone help me out with a question. I’m looking to upgrade the SSD in my ROG Ally and I’m unsure what to do about adding a heatsink or not.

I’ve picked up a 990 Pro and was hearing conflicting reports about if a heatsink is necessary in the Ally or not. For arguments sake, I was going to stick a slim copper heatsink on there and be done with it. I picked one up from Aliexpress and it comes with some small elastic bands to hold it in place. I’m just not sure how those elastic bands hold up over time and they’re going to degrade after a while due to the heat that the SSD puts out. I’m worried that the bands could eventually snap and get loose inside the Ally, or the heatsink comes loose, worst case scenario.

I do have some Kapton tape and was wondering if I could use some of that at each end of the SSD in place of the elastic bands. Would that be ok, or could it cause any issues?

I’m totally stumped at the correct way to go about this?!
