Even in retirement Felder keeps being brought in as last minute replacement for big names on the UFC's whim

[–]kinzer13 996 points997 points  (84 children)

Company man gonna company

[–]ShillingAintEZ 1462 points1463 points  (83 children)

Being a company man seems a lot more reasonable when it is commenting on fights instead of getting beaten unconscious for a teacher's salary.

[–]kinzer13 229 points230 points  (68 children)

Lol that's the truth. I don't know what a commentator gets paid, but I'm guessing it's better than being a fighter... Which is just depressing.

[–]UnHoly_OneA big good news soon 130 points131 points  (55 children)

I'm guessing it's better than being a fighter

Maybe over the course of the year, but I doubt it if you are just counting a single event.

I don't think Felder is getting 25K for commentating one six hour long card.

[–]Actual-Replacement97Kiss my whole asshole 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Lol. Teachers (generally) get a pension, health insurance and have a union. More like a fucking subway sandwich artist salary.

[–]ZardozSama 115 points116 points  (8 children)

Aside from the hunting trip, Joe Rogan basically stopped doing any overseas cards a few years ago because the travel was too much of a hassle. I am not surprised he is skipping an Abu Dhabi card.

[–]JasAFCTeam Whittaker[S] 1853 points1854 points  (371 children)

Rogan had a schedule conflict with his annual hunting trip that prevented him from working this card, according to sources.

[–]bcisme 268 points269 points  (55 children)

I’d rather go on an elk hunt too. He’s got the money now, he can do what he wants. Good for him imo. We all want that.

[–]poridgepantsChoo Choo motherfuckers 192 points193 points  (35 children)

I would definitely rather go to the UFC than hunt but the dream is to have enough money and clout to do whatever you want. Good for him. I actually really like Felder as a color guy too.

[–]Modified3 41 points42 points  (3 children)

Yeah I would rather go to the UFC as well. But how many UFC shows has Rogan been to in his life. I'm sure missing a couple isnt a huge deal.

[–]CompSciBJJ 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Exactly. After even a dozen of them in a short timeframe I'd start getting more excited about other stuff, let alone hundreds of them.

[–]LoveTechnique 100 points101 points  (15 children)

[–]BigShmokey 153 points154 points  (5 children)

[–]pyroaquatics 65 points66 points  (3 children)

[–]CCCAY 19 points20 points  (0 children)

[–]SweatyExamination9 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'd rather have the choice to do whichever I want.

Regardless isn't his annual trip a thing he does with friends? I'd rather go on a trip with my friends than go to the UFC event to work.

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (1 child)

he likely has a tag that he has to use....

[–]Just_a_Guy_In_a_Tank 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah I think he’s stated previously at this point he only does the UFC gig for fun.

Elk hunts only come around once or twice a year. UFC is every other week.

[–]bcisme 14 points15 points  (0 children)

[–]NoruaTeam Nurmagomedov 102 points103 points  (2 children)

No, you/we find out four days before the event.

Dana or the UFC didn't learn this today via MMA Junkie.

[–]b3nthegod 106 points107 points  (16 children)

i might be wrong, but I thought it happened annually every semester monthly....

[–]SnoodDoodMackenzie "Big Country" Dern 129 points130 points  (11 children)

[–]ThreeHourRiverMan 49 points50 points  (7 children)

When's the last time Joe did an overseas card? I thought he only did the PPV that are in the US.

Could be wrong but I know at least at one point that was his policy.

[–][deleted] 34 points35 points  (3 children)

I believe he’s declared on his podcast that he only does Vegas cards anymore. For the last handful of years IIRC.

[–]Golgotha94 23 points24 points  (0 children)

North American PPV’s only. He still does the ones that come to Canada I believe from before the pandemic. Or he was still doing them when I was in attendance.

[–][deleted] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You are correct, he only does events in North America, usually only Vegas.

[–][deleted] 54 points55 points  (28 children)

if that really is the case and it's his "annual hunting trip" why would such a last min replacement be necessary? Like you guys had all year to get this sorted out..

[–]skwudgeball 14 points15 points  (0 children)

You are just reading this article last minute son.

This was not done last minute, they just didn’t want people to know till the last minute for whatever reason.

[–][deleted] 42 points43 points  (11 children)

he likely won a tag in a lottery.

[–]Hippiebigbuckle 14 points15 points  (8 children)

[–]Somewhere_Elsewhere 182 points183 points  (0 children)

And it couldn't be more clear if he's willing to miss a Nick Diaz fight in person; which he's been super hyped about happening for the past decade.

He was literally giddy cade side when Nick fought Anderson in 2013.

If he's not showing up for this, he's essentially done.

[–]300andWhatThe Khabib Interpreter 14 points15 points  (0 children)

If I had to guess, everyone who is there needs to be vaccinated, and Rogan isn't, so they are using the hunting trip as an excuse.

[–]TheLordOfZero 418 points419 points  (59 children)

I prefer the Count over Felder but Rogan is getting out of the picture bit by bit. I suppose is normal when you don't need to do the work and have hundreds of millions in the bank.

[–][deleted] 321 points322 points  (46 children)

I'd be more than happy to see Bisping take over for Joe. I don't know any of Michael's crazy opinions and I'm fine with that.

[–]Iohetu ratfuck 50 points51 points  (11 children)

Bas Rutten and Frank Trigg were always my favorites. It's a shame UFC doesn't use either of them

[–]Iohetu ratfuck 24 points25 points  (5 children)

[–]afightguyTeamRunTogether 149 points150 points  (20 children)

Bisping is ten times smarter than Joe. He has great opinions according to my standards.

[–]DislocatedXanax« Teep me like one of your French girls » 143 points144 points  (16 children)

His YouTube channel is like Chael's, except Bisping actually says things that matter, instead of spilling out a word salad just to meet a minimum video length.

[–]RagingFeatherone as well please 🙏 6 points7 points  (0 children)

HIGHLY recommend his vid on weight cutting. He goes into pretty specific details about what fighters do and his own experiences weight cutting.

[–]LastKing318 9 points10 points  (5 children)

Chael is horrible for technical parts of mma. He says things that are just completely false. Like "height and reach doesn't matter. Its never has. Its just something people made up and ran with" hes not just joking either like his fans say. Hes does this constantly. Presents his horrible opinions as fact.

[–]CaptainDogeSparrow 22 points23 points  (1 child)

Yeah, I came to realize that Uncle Chael became a shill for the UFC, McGregor and Jake Paul. Shame, since he had good opinions in the beginning of his channel.

[–]Youcantpassnewman 654 points655 points  (33 children)

Like rogan and DC not being together, when Rogan is there it makes DC a little bit more disconnected from the fights IMO. Personally for me, Felder adds such a different dimension and overall a likable dude. When Joe is there DC just gets to animated for my taste, I think Felder is great and makes a fluid broadcast with DC and Anik.

[–]curlycharcoalthe mods are fucking punks, dude 107 points108 points  (0 children)

as slacky j aptly calls it, DC + Rogan in the booth = live podcasting

[–]Deushomine11Yes, I Am A Hybrid Wrestler 168 points169 points  (10 children)

I feel like for DC and Rogans first few commentaries together they seemed like the dram team and then it got stale fast

[–]Sweet-ride-brah 86 points87 points  (9 children)

I think for their first few DC wasnt messing around so much, and now they’re too pally pally with each other? Maybe

[–]Deushomine11Yes, I Am A Hybrid Wrestler 14 points15 points  (0 children)

That’s definitely a part of it. I like there comedic chemistry but when you’re so busy joking around it’s hard to pay very close attention to the fight. And then Rogan’s tendency to make very absolute declarations about how the fights going usually end up being wrong and making him look bad

[–]shrewdyis = is 115 points116 points  (4 children)

Rogan is a shitshow whenever he's on these days, but him along with DC especially is a terrible combo - constantly trying to make each other laugh and paying little attention to most fights.

This is great news.

[–]NaugonThis is sucks 23 points24 points  (4 children)

Felder, Bisping, and Fitzgerald are the best commentating combo imo

[–]GaMa-BinkieYou are hurt by Dana only speaking the truth 778 points779 points  (28 children)

But who will remind me that feints are more important than strikes?

How will I know when a fighter has a hidden injury without Mystic Joe?

Does Felder have the experience to interview a knocked out fighter?

[–]KaoticAsylim 248 points249 points  (5 children)

I'm worried I won't know a fighter is hurt when they're showing no visible signs of being hurt

[–]TheManofRo 102 points103 points  (3 children)

[–]Gracket_Material 48 points49 points  (1 child)

"HE'S MOVING THE BONE BACK IN PLACE"

[–]tuytutu 19 points20 points  (2 children)

when a fighter has a hidden injury without Mystic Joe?

This is so funny. Hadn't realised, but now that you mention it he does always spot something out of nowhere. Always so confident about it too.

[–]LocoCoopermar 16 points17 points  (1 child)

Once he's decided on his narrative with anything he's gotta run with it, whether it's a fighter being hurt or him deciding someone is winning if Joe sees something in his head it's the truth and he's running with it. Jan's leg is probably still compromised from all the leg kick feints Izzy was throwing out there.

[–]vannucker 12 points13 points  (0 children)

That's a trait of all conspiracy conservatives. Once they figure out their narrative, everything bends in to it or it is rejected as fake news.

[–]Corken_dono 408 points409 points  (39 children)

Diaz vs McGregor II was a bad one as well. Conor hurts Nate multiple times and drops him 3 times “He tagged him” - in a monotone voice. Nate throws slappy hooks where maybe 1/4 of them land and Rogan is screaming like a baboon.

Not because he doesn't have talent, but because he doesn't try. At all. He's going in with zero research and paying minimal attention to the fight itself

[–]DismalEconomics 20 points21 points  (3 children)

I wouldn't be surprised if some of Rogan's approach to broadcasting rubs off on his co-workers either through mimicry or Rogan given direct advice...

I can def Rogan telling Cormier...

" I just come in and try to have a "real" conversation... the audience would rather hear us having a good time than sounding like stiff, tie wearing broadcasters that show up having prepared for days and trying to read off notes and shit "

Even for the podcast, Rogan's dedication to do absolutely no preparation for his guests gets pretty ridiculous.

I'd bet the ratio of guests he's had on promoting their books compared to the amount of those books that he even bothered picking up to read a chapter is something like 100:1 .

[–]ThreeHourRiverMan 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Like when he had on Jack Dorsey and admitted he had done no prep and completely dropped a major chance. The guy is a billionaire head of one of the major social media sites during a time they / he is facing major backlash and questions about the legal and moral ways twitter operates - and you just wing it?

[–]mcdavidthegoat 20 points21 points  (3 children)

I do really enjoy the occasional card where it's DC and Bisping but they honestly fill similar roles in the booth and it can be a bit much together lol

Anik and Fitzgerald are similar and good in their roles. Used to say Anik is better but he finds really "interesting" tid bits on guys these days lol

DC and Bisping are just some fun, light hearted but still technical analysis.

Felder is just well spoken and on the ball when he calls fights, honestly might be the best of the bunch as far as straight up fight calling goes imo.

I'd say DC, Mike, and Felder are my top 3 I would throw hardy up there if he was still around too. I like Anik but I might have him below Fitzgerald tbh just because I find he lets the fighters shine a bit more in commentary and I find some of Aniks comments really really distasteful.

Also shout out Anthony Smith for his desk work to, he's a stud up there and is on a nice lil rebound streak rn.

Honestly, Bisping is best with Dom. They feed off each other and make it a good time. Felder and DC go well together, too.

Felder , bisping and anik for me. Felder and Bisping for their insight, Anik for his random ass personal notes. I feel like DC sometimes does the Rogan thing and creates his own narrative.

Also when others go off rails Anik actually calls the action. "So and so with a big body shot- sorry to interrupt, Joe"

Can someone explain the whole Joe Rogan appeal ? His stand up isn’t all that funny and then I saw the whole horse paste praising he did and I’m just curious to hear from people that like him what his appeal is ?

I like Felder in the booth and he does have that Joe Rogan excitability to him. Yelling and making crazy faces when it gets crazy. Unpopular opinion, wouldn't miss Joe that much if he left,I feel alot of the fighter who commentate have surpassed him. Still his raw enthusiasm can't be replaced I don't think.

Bruh no shit he’s missing Abu Dhabi … he doesn’t travel out of the country for UFC

He will not be missed.

Unpopular opinion but I like Joe Rogan in the booth just cause he does bring a big fight feel. I do love Felder and DC though so I’ll be fine lol

I agree. For me, fights do feel bigger when Joe is in the booth. Then again, I understand that a lot of people see him as less knowledgeable than Felder, DC, Bisping, etc. However, as someone who is still growing their fandom, I really like the energy Joe brings to the table on PPV’s!

But now where will we get bullshit narratives from?

Would anybody miss Rogan these days if he never commentated again? He used to be good many, many years ago but he's just really bad now. Constant shit takes and bias non-stop when commenting these days.

His commentary in the Izzy vs Jan fight was just so goddamn bad.
