The Unknown (1927 film)
The Unknown is a 1927 American silent horror film directed by Tod Browning and featuring Lon Chaney as carnival knife thrower Alonzo the Armless and Joan Crawford as the scantily clad carnival girl he hopes to marry.
Film historian Ken Hanke considers the film to be in many respects the best of Browning's films with Lon Chaney.Burt Lancaster said that Chaney's portrayal in The Unknown featured “one of the most compelling and emotionally exhausting scenes I have ever seen an actor do.” Chaney did remarkable and convincing collaborative scenes with real-life armless double Paul Desmuke (sometimes credited as Peter Dismuki), whose legs and feet were used to manipulate objects such as knives and cigarettes in frame with Chaney's upper body and face.
As with Browning's later sound film Freaks (1932), contemporary reviewers were sometimes less appreciative. "A visit to the dissecting room in a hospital would be quite as pleasant," opined the New York Evening Post, "and at the same time more instructive." Modern viewers can discern the same macabre style of this film (and other Browning-Chaney collaborations) in later productions ranging from the 1930s Universal Studios horror films to the 1960s Twilight Zone and Alfred Hitchcock Presents programs.

Plot: Marvin Fields is caught up with challenges and obstacles. On the verge of losing his family, he has to step up and face his adversaries. Plot: Mystical thriller based on Aleksey Birger's novel of the same name. Winter of 1946. A young officer of Cavalry Sergey Vysik after demobilization is appointed the head at Criminal investigation department near Moscow. He is charge of an abandoned stud farm, some villages nearby, a factory, workers' town and railway warehouses where trophies from Germany and some humanitarian loads from soviet governments are kept. When Vysik came to Mitrohino village where there was a local police department, he was going to solve some problems there - someone stole horses from the stud farm and there was a series of cruel murders of a former head of police department, night guard, some local residents and "a special person" from Moscow. Moreover, all the residents are terrified by gossips that a horrible elusive werewolf committed all these crimes. Regardless of his boss' order to ignore all the prejudice, Vysik wants to find out what is that force keeping all the people in terror.

At the end, an actor steps forward through a proscenium arch and asks the viewers not to reveal the Bat's identity to their friends. Alonzo the Armless is a circus http://476urt.blogspot.com/27503/.html freak who uses his feet to toss knives and fire a rifle at his partner, Nanon. However, he is an impostor and fugitive. He has arms, but keeps them tightly bound to his torso, a secret known only to his friend Cojo, a midget. Alonzo's left hand has a double thumb, which would identify him as the perpetrator of various crimes.

Mani Nasry an exceptionally talented filmmaker, actor and artist with a sophisticated breadth of education, skills, experience, and professional accomplishments. He trained as an actor and director in New York with Salem Ludwig and with Donna DeMatteo for playwriting. For Mani, the decision to work in the film industry guided his academic decisions from an early age. He attended a Toronto high school renowned for excellence in the arts, and was accepted into one of the highly competitive film program at Ryerson university. It is notable that he went to Ryerson with an already well-established career in theatre, film, television and commercial work, and a range of multi-faceted achievements including producing, cinematography, casting, writing, directing, acting, and editing. On his own he added stints in New York and Los Angeles with leading acting teachers, as well as learning the grace and style of many forms of dance and athletics. With courses perceptively, he has also recognized the importance of acquiring an understanding of the business side of the industry, and the varied aspects of technology and production. There are some people clearly born to follow the path they have chosen from the start. Mani Nasry has the passion to succeed, the curiosity and ingenuity required to lead and collaborate in an industry known for its impact and appeal, and the strength of character and work ethic to immerse himself in finding and telling an unforgettable story.

Mani Nasry an exceptionally talented filmmaker, actor and artist with a sophisticated breadth of education, skills, experience, and professional accomplishments. He trained as an actor and director in New York with Salem Ludwig and with Donna DeMatteo for playwriting. For Mani, the decision to work in the film industry guided his academic decisions from an early age. He attended a Toronto high school renowned for excellence in the arts, and was accepted into one of the highly competitive film program at Ryerson university. It is notable that he went to Ryerson with an already well-established career in theatre, film, television and commercial work, and a range of multi-faceted achievements including producing, cinematography, casting, writing, directing, acting, and editing. On his own he added stints in New York and Los Angeles with leading acting teachers, as well as learning the grace and style of many forms of dance and athletics. With courses perceptively, he has also recognized the importance of acquiring an understanding of the business side of the industry, and the varied aspects of technology and production. There are some people clearly born to follow the path they have chosen from the start. Mani Nasry has the passion to succeed, the curiosity and ingenuity required to lead and collaborate in an industry known for its impact and appeal, and the strength of character and work ethic to immerse himself in finding and telling an unforgettable story.

"Diving is like poetry, each movement flowing into the next." The Diver is a hymn to diving and the aesthetics of movement. It is a dreamlike collage of movement, music and narration honouring the most beautiful sport there is. Helge Wasenius (b. 1927, d. 2008), The Grand Old Man of divers, is the principal character in the film, a colourful daredevil of the sport.
Helge Wasenius was the almost sovereign diving champion of Finland and the Nordic countries for two decades, representing Finland at two Olympics (Helsinki 1952, Melbourne 1956). Parallel to his more professional career, he pursued another career as a children's favourite stunt diver. His speciality was when he coldbloodedly dangled head downwards high on a diving platform, hanging by his feet.
In the film he decides to perform this stunt one last time before making his final plunge into the unknown. The film take place at Helsinki Swimming Stadium, scene of the 1952 Helsinki Summer Olympics.
The Diver made history at the Tampere International Film Festival in 2001. It is the first film during the festivals 47 years of existence to pull a perfect triple victory. The Diver won the Grand Prix of the International Competition, the main prize of the best film under thirty minutes in the Finnish competition and to top it all off, also the Risto Jarva Prize. Well that´s not all, The Diver won also the Youth Jury Prize and the Audience Award.
Since Tampere the film has received festival prizes all over world where it has been screened including main prizes in Montréal International Festival New Cinema & New Media and a special mention at IDFA, the world´s largest documentary film festival held in Amsterdam. The Diver was also selected the best film in two world´s leading sport film festivals: Sport Film Festival Rassegna Citta Di Palermo and Milano International FICTS Festival.

Although Pierre Perrault is a hugely important figure for Québécois cinema, he has remained largely unknown outside of his home province. Developing a unique style of documentary cinema while making use of ever lighter and smaller equipment, Perrault explored Québec and its inhabitants from up close. Shot throughout rural French Canada, his films speak of a time when Québec was still in search of its own identity and voice
Born in 1927, Perrault grew up in Montréal where he repeatedly got kicked out of private schools until he finally graduated as a lawyer from Université de Montréal. He practiced for two years in the 1950s, then started working for Radio Canada and spent several years traveling along the Saint Lawrence River, recording traditional folk songs, interviewing the residents, and meeting many of the people who would later appear in his films. His first radio series Au Pays de Neufve-France (In the Land of New France) was one such exploration of traditional music, which later became a television series. It was through this assignment that Perrault first met the inhabitants of Isle-aux-Coudres.
Exploring the language and culture of the island’s inhabitants, which have remained nearly unchanged for three centuries, the Isle-aux-Coudres trilogy follows in the tradition of ethnographic films like Flaherty’s Nanook of the North. Sometimes called “cinema of the spoken word,” Perrault’s films emphasize the role of language and vernacular in passing knowledge and customs between generations. By looking at tradition and history, at Québec’s roots in France, and at urban influences on rural societies, Perrault positioned himself politically through his films at a time when separatism was a subject of intense debate. Some called his anthropological films reactionary; some believed they helped the separatists’ cause.
After The Isle-aux-Coudres trilogy, Perrault distanced himself from direct cinema and started making films about Québécois nationalism, documenting protests and questioning the feasibility of separatism. He returned to the people of rural Québec in the mid 1970s in his Abitibi cycle, which centered around farmer Hauris Lalancette.
He finally turned to aboriginal issues and topics of wilderness and hunting. LA BÊTE LUMINEUSE (1982), a film about nine Québécois urbanites on a moose hunting trip in the wilderness, was screened at the Cannes Film Festival and ignited a firestorm of debate in France and Canada.
Perrault made feature-length documentaries while continuing to work in radio and television throughout his life, and from 1965 onwards he acted as director of the National Film Board of Canada. He was posthumously awarded the Medal of the Quiet Revolution from the Government of Québec for his contributions to Québecois culture in the 1960s.
