Nicholas Ray
Nicholas Ray (August 7, 1911 – June 16, 1979) was an American film director best known for the movie Rebel Without a Cause.
Ray is also appreciated by a smaller audience of cinephiles for a large number of narrative features produced between 1947 and 1963 including Bigger Than Life, Johnny Guitar, They Live by Night, and In a Lonely Place, as well as an experimental work produced throughout the 1970s titled We Can't Go Home Again, which was unfinished at the time of Ray's death from lung cancer. Ray's compositions within the CinemaScope frame and use of color are particularly well-regarded. Ray was an important influence on the French New Wave, with Jean-Luc Godard famously writing in a review of Bitter Victory, "cinema is Nicholas Ray."

New Orleans- based singer / songwriter Nick Ray has gone back to his roots as a solo artist. He took everything he had learned over the years and applied it to his solo music. He released his debut EP Four White Walls in 2014. Recently he reunited with rapper/lyricist LOC and the twohammered out the 7 track album, The Playback, in which Nick produced and sang all of the hooks. Nicholas Ray is now one of my top ten favorite filmmakers of all time. I had seen REBEL WITHOUT A CAUSE when I was younger, but it wasn’t until recently that I went back to check out about a half a dozen of his films back-to-back. I realized the more that I watched, the more I responded to his work thematically. Joining me once again to talk about this legendary director is returning guest Sergio Mims, one of the smartest critics I know. And boy does he have some stories to share throughout our conversation that made my jaw drop. We go through several titles including THEY LIVE BY NIGHT, IN A LONELY PLACE, ON DANGEROUS GROUND, JOHNNY GUITAR, REBEL WITHOUT A CAUSE, and BIGGER THAN LIFE. Sergio also mentions a couple of other films worth seeking out. Nicholas Ray has lead quite the life, and we dive into a lot regarding the man and his movies, both on-screen and off. I really think you’ll enjoy this one, even if you’re not familiar with the man’s work.

Past as Prologue was a symposium held in November 2014 in honor of Michael Graves on the occasion of his fiftieth year in practice. Organized by The Architectural League and hosted by Parsons The New School for Design, the day brought together 14 architects, designers, educators, writers, and others to celebrate Graves’ remarkable and distinctive body of work.
In presentations by architect Steven Holl, architect and artist Mary-Ann Ray, and writer and historian Nicholas Olsberg, the role of hand drawing is brought into focus. Holl shares the origination and development of many of his recent works through the drawings and watercolors—his “thought process”—that he makes for each project. Ray, a former student of Graves’, details how drawing acts within her own analytical processes and creative thinking, including through her field work completing measurements and photo documentation of Hadrian’s Villa. Olsberg uses a series of historical examples to describe the varied practices and attitudes of architects toward drawing, including Graves’ own process of discovery through sketching. The three come together to discuss drawing in contemporary education and practice, including what is lost in digital design and representation.

Nicholas Ray (1911-1979) was one of the most innovative and consistently entertaining filmmakers of the Hollywood studio era, remaining legendary for his intense personality, fierce individuality, and restless creative growth. Coming up through the left-wing Theater of Action in New York City followed by the Federal Theatre Project (alongside John Houseman and Elia Kazan), Ray was known as an “actor’s director” for his tendency to allow the actor to define their own role. Despite a relatively short career and working within myriad generic confines—Westerns, film noir, melodramas, and “social problem” pictures—at disparate studios, Ray managed to infuse his films with distinctive visual and thematic style and iconic results. New Orleans- based singer / songwriter Nick Ray has gone back to his roots as a solo artist. He took everything he had learned over the years and applied it to his solo music. He released his debut EP Four White Walls in 2014. Recently he reunited with rapper/lyricist LOC and the twohammered out the 7 track album, The Playback, in which Nick produced and sang all of the hooks. Nicholas Ray is now one of my top ten favorite filmmakers of all time. I had seen REBEL WITHOUT A CAUSE when I was younger, but it wasn’t until recently that I went back to check out about a half a dozen of his films back-to-back. I realized the more that I watched, the more I responded to his work thematically. Joining me once again to talk about this legendary director is returning guest Sergio Mims, one of the smartest critics I know. And boy does he have some stories to share throughout our conversation that made my jaw drop. We go through several titles including THEY LIVE BY NIGHT, IN A LONELY PLACE, ON DANGEROUS GROUND, JOHNNY GUITAR, REBEL WITHOUT A CAUSE, and BIGGER THAN LIFE. Sergio also mentions a couple of other films worth seeking out. Nicholas Ray has lead quite the life, and we dive into a lot regarding the man and his movies, both on-screen and off. Past as Prologue was a symposium held in November 2014 in honor of Michael Graves on the occasion of his fiftieth year in practice. Organized by The Architectural League and hosted by Parsons The New School for Design, the day brought together 14 architects, designers, educators, writers, and others to celebrate Graves’ remarkable and distinctive body of work.
In presentations by architect Steven Holl, architect and artist Mary-Ann Ray, and writer and historian Nicholas Olsberg, the role of hand drawing is brought into focus. Holl shares the origination and development of many of his recent works through the drawings and watercolors—his “thought process”—that he makes for each project. Ray, a former student of Graves’, details how drawing acts within her own analytical processes and creative thinking, including through her field work completing measurements and photo documentation of Hadrian’s Villa. Olsberg uses a series of historical examples to describe the varied practices and attitudes of architects toward drawing, including Graves’ own process of discovery through sketching. The three come together to discuss drawing in contemporary education and practice, including what is lost in digital design and representation.
