Erich von Stroheim (September 22, 1885 – May 12, 1957) was an Austrian-American director, actor and producer, most notable as being a film star of the silent era, subsequently noted as an auteur for his directorial work.
Stroheim was born in Vienna, Austria, in 1885 as Erich Oswald Stroheim, the son of Benno Stroheim, a middle-class hat-maker, and Johanna Bondy, both of whom were observant Jews.
Stroheim emigrated to America at the end of 1909. On arrival at Ellis Island, he claimed to be Count Erich Oswald Hans Carl Maria von Stroheim und Nordenwall, the son of Austrian nobility like the characters he played in his films, but both Billy Wilder and Stroheim's agent Paul Kohner claimed that he spoke with a decidedly lower-class Austrian accent. Jean Renoir writes in his memoirs: “Stroheim spoke hardly any German. He had to study his lines like a schoolboy learning a foreign language.” Later, while living in Europe, Stroheim claimed in published remarks to have "forgotten" his native tongue. In Renoir's movie la Grande Illusion, Stroheim speaks German with a strong American accent.

Film Noir Classic Directed by Anthony Mann Produced by W Lee Wilder The Great Flamarion (Erich von Stroheim) is an arrogant, friendless, and misogynous marksman who displays his trick gunshot act in the vaudeville circuit. His show features a beautiful assistant, Connie (Mary Beth Hughes) and her drunken husband Al (Dan Duryea), Flamarion's other assistant. Flamarion falls in love with Connie, the movie's femme fatale, and is soon manipulated by her into killing her no good husband during one of their acts.
First film directed by Erich von Stroheim. See review and synopsis at: http://www.acinemahistory.com/2014/07/blind-husbands-1919.html
FILM IN 2 PARTS!!!! The 130 minutes version left of a film supposedly 6 hours long in its primary form. The most expensive production of that time, they say. (Director Stroheim, $700,000 producer Carl Laemmle, $1,300,000). Monte Carlo was entirely recreated on Hollywood backlot. Impressive indeed!
"Erich von Stroheim attempted a literal adaptation of Frank Norris’ novel “McTeague” in 1924 with his film, “Greed.” The resulting film was over sixteen hours long. A cut of the film only eight hours long, then one running to four hours, appeared. Finally the studio itself cut the film to around two hours, resulting in a finished product that was entirely incoherent. Since that time, few directors have been foolish enough to put everything in a novel into a film." ReAdaptation: the book series is an ongoing work, evolving chapter by chapter. Intrigued by Erich von Stroheim’s quandary, I investigate the process of adapting one form to another by reinterpreting popular narratives through a process of elision and (re)animation. In an attempt to understand how a novel is transformed from writ...
