The American canon is always being reformulated by the clashing of opinion, the changing of taste, and mostly by the passage of time. These are some of the great literary culture-makers; survivors who still speak to us through the passage of place and time. And, yes, I know the music is very creepy. I first thought some 19th century Americana - like Stephen Foster or Louis Moreau Gottschalk - would be appropriate but no composition I found really seemed to fit. This may change in the future (audio swap) but for the time being consider it a nod to the Dark Romantics on the list. Music: "Contagious Hallucinations" by Andrew Scott Foust

Award-winning American author David Vann has experienced great tragedy. His father killed himself when Vann was just 13. Vann penned "Legend of a suicide", a heartbreaking semi-autobiographical collection of stories which he says helped him escape the trauma of his father's suicide. In an interview with Xinhua, Vann is forthright with his own ideas about suicide. "I think it's a mistake to think of suicide as being selfish or self-sacrificing. I think both are wrong," he said.
