Brazil (i/brəˈzɪl/; Portuguese: Brasil [bɾaˈziw] ), officially the Federative Republic of Brazil (Portuguese: República Federativa do Brasil, listen ), is the largest sovereign state in both South America and the Latin American region. It is the world's fifth-largest country, both by geographical area and by population. It is the largest Portuguese-speaking country in the world, and the only one in the Americas.
Bounded by the Atlantic Ocean on the east, Brazil has a coastline of 7,491 km (4,655 mi). It borders all other South American countries except Ecuador and Chile and occupies 47.3 percent of the continent of South America. Its Amazon River basin includes a vast tropical forest, home to diverse wildlife, a variety of ecological systems, and extensive natural resources spanning numerous protected habitats. This unique environmental heritage makes Brazil one of 17 megadiverse countries, and is the subject of significant global interest and debate regarding deforestation and environmental protection.

From the Copacabana to the Ipanema, it is on the beaches of Rio de Janeiro that the Cariocas spend their time. Rich and poor, inhabitants of chic sea-front apartments or the hillside favellas, street kids and football hopefuls, black and white and every colour in between… everyone mixes together. São Paulo, one of the world’s most populated cities, is Brazil’s exciting hub of business, culture, creativity and hospitality. ‘Sampa’ was founded in 1554, at the spot of the historic Pátio do Colégio. During the presidency of Lula Da Silva, billions of dollars in bribes were taken to allow construction companies to overcharge the government-owned oil company, Petrobras. Now, Brazil has corruption, but it's actually pretty good for a developing country. But the people of Brazil have come to expect more, and they have been left down. Current president, Dilma Rousseff, was chairwoman of Petrobras during the period of corruption, but no one knows whether Lula or Dilma were involved or aware. But Lula was under investigation before Rousseff appointed him to be her chief of staff, a move that means he can no longer be prosecuted by a normal court. I think this whole thing speaks very highly of Brazil. A reckoning had to come, and I'm pleased the citizens are holding the government account...

São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro used to be the only destination for foreign professionals coming to Brazil, but this scenario has changed over the past 10 years. The preparation for the 2014 World Cup and the oil exploitation on the Brazilian shores have been leading to a distribution of job offer throughout Brazil. Since Manaus has been chosen to host matches of the 2014 World Cup, a lot has been invested in infrastructure and services, specially regarding accommodation. Over the last four years, the Brazilian Northeast has been significantly increasing its consuming level. Shopping malls have grown 60% in two years, impulsing the local economy. The Brazilian central-west is a strong player in the agribusiness sector as it is one of the major exporters of commodities. As the three states com...

While having a mouthwatering Brazilian barbeque in a more than 30 year old steak house “Roda de Carreta” in Porto Alegre, enjoyed also a dance show. It was not only entertaining and historically educational, but also exciting because for one of the parts of the show I was chosen to come on the stage to help the showman demonstrate his skills. Had loads of fun and laughter with my friends - Sintija, Oliver and Cel - thank you for that! P.s. This show tells a bit of 19th century history of Rio Grande do Sul (Porto Alegre is the capital of this Brazilian state). For example, the rope with the ball (you can see it in the video) was used for hunting and warfare in Rio Grande do Sul’s war of independence (the state gained independence from Brazil for 10 years - from 1835 till 1845). By the way ...

We had a great experience at carnival with our kids. There are many locations in Salvador for carnival. Tonight we went to Farol da Barra on the beach in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil. We ate, laughed and danced to amazing Brazilian music. Live artists sang to massive crowds as they passed by on huge floats. The best part was having our neighbors show us the best way to experience carnival with kids. They are native Brazilians and skilled carnival participants. They made sure we were happy and safe. We parked our car in a nearby neighborhood and took a free bus to the party. There were tons of costume stands and food vendors everywhere. It was fantastic! Video 32

In Brazil, health care is free — by law, everyone has a right to treatment, from organ transplants to sex-change operations. No one benefits more than the poor, and physicians are given incentives and paid up to three times more to work in the poorest areas of Brazil. As a result, infant mortality is down and life expectancy is up, but there are drawbacks. Offering so much has put a strain on the health system. Most of Brazils hospitals are considered substandard, with long waits for procedures. Worldfocus correspondent Edie Magnus and producer Megan Thomspon report from Brazil on the highs and lows of universal health care. Health Care in Brazil from "International Health Care Systems". Brazil has made rapid progress toward universal coverage of its population through its national health system, the Sistema Único de Saúde (SUS). Since its emergence from dictatorship in 1985, Brazil — which has the world's fifth-largest population and seventh-largest economy — has invested substantially in expanding access to health care for all citizens, a goal that is implicit in the Brazilian constitution and the principles guiding the national health system. Brazil's major and medium size metropolitan areas face increasing problems of water pollution. Coastal cities such as Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo and Recife suffer effects of upstream residential and industrial sewage contaminating feeder rivers, lakes, and the ocean. In 2000, only 35% of collected wastewater received any treatment. For example, the Tietê River, which runs through the São Paulo metropolitan area (17 million inhabitants), has returned to its 1990 pollution levels. Despite the support from the IDB, the World Bank and Caixa Econômica Federal in a US$400 million clean up effort, the level of dissolved oxygen has returned to the critical level of 1990 at 0 mg per liter due to increased levels of unregulated sewerage, phosphorus, and ammonia nitrogen discharged into the river. São Paulo, one of the world’s most populated cities, is Brazil’s exciting hub of business, culture, creativity and hospitality. ‘Sampa’ was founded in 1554, at the spot of the historic Pátio do Colégio. Once home to the region’s first main Catholic Church, the central Praça da Sé now houses the towering Metropolitan Cathedral. Two beautiful historic buildings have been transformed into Cultural Centers: The Banco do Brazil and the Júlio Prestes Train Station. While the city’s most esteemed museums are the São Paulo Museum of Art, on the famous Avenida Paulista, and the Pinacoteca do Estado. The Viaduto Santa Ifigenia, an art nouveau bridge, leads pedestrians to the ornate Municipal Theatre, with its impressive Sala São Paulo concert hall. Don’t miss Ibirapuera Park, which is home to ...

One Rio afficianado claims that the sensual curves of the beach resemble a woman’s body ; the most beautiful in the world, he says. No-one is afraid of revealing themselves here, certainly not the beautiful, nor even the re-modelled, or the obese ! The only thing that counts is escaping the heat, and accepting the protection of the goddesses of the sea. ...

The Franks hit Brazil for a whirlwind tour led by Alex Atala, one of the world's best and most influential chefs. Starting in São Paulo, the Franks head to Mocotó, a Northeastern-style Brazilian eatery known for it's beef foot stew served with white beans and chorizo. To counterbalance all of the eating, Alex takes the Franks to his favorite jiu-jitsu gym for an afternoon sparring session. The following days are filled with open-air markets, Atala-style feasts, fresh scallops, swimming, beaches, and—of course—pisco. This is a "triple A" trip according to the Franks: Action, Alex, and Atala. When Karl is told that his next trip will be to Rio de Janeiro to see Christ the Redeemer atop Corcovado, his first reaction is that it is akin to a pylon: something that is there everyday that people probably get tired of seeing. What Ricky and Stephen don't tell him until he arrives in Rio is that they want him to be more social on his trips. As such, they place him in a dorm room in a hostel. They do tell him that Carnival will be happening while he's there. He's not too excited about it as he hates crowds and he presupposes it's a gay event, which makes him feel uncomfortable. But he is thrown into the festivities, whether he likes it or not. His anxiety at crowds is heightened when he is told he is also to attend a block party. He remarks at the dichotomy between the Catholic nature o...

I'm sorry for suggesting
I'm reading the whitewhashed faces
I could use a connection
I'm watching the whitewashed faces
On a good night sent spinning
Knows to play it winning
Strawberry red twizzlers
I wanna know what's with her
In the sun lie pale lovers
Drink slow and slowly
Over each of us in our turn sat in line
And stuck to burn
She shines like a carnival
Swimming through my book of dreams
All I know is all you've learned
Is all I want to be
You're right I'm left You're right
In the morning goldfish dead in a bowl
Everybody is up on a pulpit all alone
This is your word of stone
Where were you when Rome was burning?
Who wants points well it's not worth it
I'm trying hard to answer the letter
