Abdul El-Sayed is a public health physician and epidemiologist. He is the health officer for the City of Detroit and executive director of the Detroit health department under Mayor Michael E. Duggan.
El-Sayed is an internationally recognized expert in population health policy, the social determinants of health, and health inequalities. Previously he was a professor in the Department of Epidemiology at Columbia University, where he directed the Columbia University Systems Science Program and Global Research Analytics for Population Health. He has authored more than 100 publications, including peer-reviewed scientific articles, commentaries, book chapters, and abstracts in journals including JAMA, the American Journal of Public Health, and Pediatrics. He has been a featured speaker at national and international conferences. He is the recipient of numerous health policy and research awards, including being named a Policy Innovator by the Carnegie Council. El-Sayed’s writing on urban health policy has been published in The New York Times, The Guardian, CNN, Al-Jazeera, The Hill, Project Syndicate, and Huffington Post. In addition, he has appeared as an expert commentator on local, national, and international networks.
El-Sayed earned a doctorate in public health from Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar, and an MD from Columbia University as a Soros Fellow. He is a graduate of the University of Michigan with highest distinction in biology and political science, where he delivered the university-wide student commencement speech alongside President Bill Clinton in 2007.

Public health
Public health refers to "the science and art of preventing disease, prolonging life and promoting health through organized efforts and informed choices of society, organizations, public and private, communities and individuals." It is concerned with threats to health based on population health analysis. The population in question can be as small as a handful of people, or as large as all the inhabitants of several continents (for instance, in the case of a pandemic). The dimensions of health can encompass "a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity", as defined by the United Nations' World Health Organization. Public health incorporates the interdisciplinary approaches of epidemiology, biostatistics and health services. Environmental health, community health, behavioral health, health economics, public policy, insurance medicine and occupational safety and health are other important subfields.
The focus of public health intervention is to improve health and quality of life through prevention and treatment of disease and other physical and mental health conditions. This is done through surveillance of cases and health indicators, and through promotion of healthy behaviors. Examples of common public health measures include promotion of hand washing, breastfeeding, delivery of vaccinations, and distribution of condoms to control the spread of sexually transmitted diseases.

American Journal
American Journal (alternately titled American Journal: Coast to Coast for its final season; also known as AJ) is a syndicated television newsmagazine program that ran from 1993 to 1998. The series was distributed by King World Productions (now part of CBS Television Distribution). It was hosted by Nancy Glass from its fall 1993 launch until 1997, when siblings Michele Dabney-Perez and former newscaster-turned-talk show host Charles Perez took over for the show's final season on air. The show's tagline was "Stories Worth Watching".
History
The show was launched in 1993. In early 1996, as an attempt to grow in the 18-34 demographic, the show tried then aborted plans to add an "Off the Hook" segment; King World would try again with "Team A.J." coverage strands in the fourth season helmed by Karen Duffy and Steve Santagati. By 1996, it was cleared on 124 stations serving 86 percent of the United States.
The theme song throughout the show's run was an arrangement of the Shaker tune "Simple Gifts."

Health
Health is the level of functional or metabolic efficiency of a living organism. In humans it is the ability of individuals or communities to adapt and self-manage when facing physical, mental or social challenges. The World Health Organization (WHO) defined health in its broader sense in its 1948 constitution as "a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity." This definition has been subject to controversy, in particular as lacking operational value and because of the problem created by use of the word "complete" Other definitions have been proposed, among which a recent definition that correlates health and personal satisfaction. Classification systems such as the WHO Family of International Classifications, including the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) and the International Classification of Diseases (ICD), are commonly used to define and measure the components of health. Health is that balanced condition of the living organism in which the integral, harmonious performance of the vital functions tends to the preservation of the organism and the normal development of the individual.

Previously he was a professor in the Department of Epidemiology at Columbia University, where he directed the Columbia University Systems Science Program and Global Research Analytics for Population Health. He has authored more than 100 publications, including peer-reviewed scientific articles, commentaries, book chapters, and abstracts in journals including JAMA, the American Journal of Public Health, and Pediatrics. He has been a featured speaker at national and international conferences. He is the recipient of numerous health policy and research awards, including being named a Policy Innovator by the Carnegie Council. El-Sayed’s writing on urban health policy has been published in The New York Times, The Guardian, CNN, Al-Jazeera, The Hill, Project Syndicate, and Huffington Post. In addition, he has appeared as an expert commentator on local, national, and international networks.
El-Sayed earned a doctorate in public health from Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar, and an MD from Columbia University as a Soros Fellow. Abdul El-Sayed is a public health physician and epidemiologist. He is the health officer for the City of Detroit and executive director of the Detroit health department under Mayor Michael E. Duggan.
El-Sayed is an internationally recognized expert in population health policy, the social determinants of health, and health inequalities. Previously he was a professor in the Department of Epidemiology at Columbia University, where he directed the Columbia University Systems Science Program and Global Research Analytics for Population Health. He has authored more than 100 publications, including peer-reviewed scientific articles, commentaries, book chapters, and abstracts in journals including JAMA, the American Journal of Public Health, and Pediatrics. He has been a featured speaker at national and international conferences. He is the recipient of numerous health policy and research awards, including being named a Policy Innovator by the Carnegie Council. El-Sayed’s writing on urban health policy has been published in The New York Times, The Guardian, CNN, Al-Jazeera, The Hill, Project Syndicate, and Huffington Post. In addition, he has appeared as an expert commentator on local, national, and international networks.
El-Sayed earned a doctorate in public health from Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar, and an MD from Columbia University as a Soros Fellow. El-Sayed is an internationally recognized expert in population health policy, the social determinants of health, and health inequalities. Previously he was a professor in the Department of Epidemiology at Columbia University, where he directed the Columbia University Systems Science Program and Global Research Analytics for Population Health. He has authored more than 100 publications, including peer-reviewed scientific articles, commentaries, book chapters, and abstracts in journals including JAMA, the American Journal of Public Health, and Pediatrics. He has been a featured speaker at national and international conferences. He is the recipient of numerous health policy and research awards, including being named a Policy Innovator by the Carnegie Council. El-Sayed’s writing on urban health policy has been published in The New York Times, The Guardian, CNN, Al-Jazeera, The Hill, Project Syndicate, and Huffington Post. In addition, he has appeared as an expert commentator on local, national, and international networks.
El-Sayed earned a doctorate in public health from Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar, and an MD from Columbia University as a Soros Fellow. He is a graduate of the University of Michigan with highest distinction in biology and political science, where he delivered the university-wide student commencement speech alongside President Bill Clinton in 2007.

She also established the department’s District Public Health Offices (DPHOs) in East and Central Harlem, the South Bronx and North and Central Brooklyn to lead targeted health and communication strategies in these communities that experience an excess burden of disease. Each office advances community health through home visiting programs, free exercise programs, efforts to increase access to healthy food, meetings with area doctors and coordination with local coalitions.
Most recently, since 2009, Dr. Bassett served at the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation as program director for the African Health Initiative and more recently has led the Child Well-being Program. Both portfolios have focused on strengthening systems to support health improvement.
Dr. Bassett grew up in New York City, received her B.A. in History and Science from Harvard University, her M.D. from Columbia University’s College of Physicians and Surgeons. She served her medical residency at Harlem Hospital Center, and has a master’s degree in Public Health from the University of Washington. The Quest for Health Reform: A Satirical History is an engaging new historical book that recounts the chronology of efforts to reform the U.S. health system through the lens of political cartoons published as early as the 19th century through passage of the Affordable Care Act. Co-authored by Executive Director of the American Public Health Association and former Joan H. Tisch Distinguished Fellow in Public Health at Hunter College, Georges C. Benjamin, MD, medical historian Theodore M. Brown, PhD; Susan Ladwig, MPH and Elyse Berkman, The Quest for Health Reform adds narrative to more than 100 years of selected caricatures, extending from famous 1870s editorial cartoonist Thomas Nast -- who drew the elephant that remains a symbol for the Republican Party -- to modern artists such as Mike Luckovich, who parodies U.S. Presidents Harry S. Truman, Bill Clinton and Barack Obama. It is an amazing look at the evolution of health reform in the United States.

Georges C. Benjamin, MD, FACP, FACEP(E), FNAPA, Hon FRSPH, is the executive director of the American Public Health Association, the nation's oldest and largest organization of public health professionals. He previously was the secretary of the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, from 1999 - 2002 following four years as its deputy secretary for public health services. For the last 20 years he has been actively practicing public health at the local, state, and national level with expertise in the areas of emergency preparedness, administration and infectious diseases. Dr. Benjamin serves as publisher of the field's premier journal, the American Journal of Public Health, The Nation's Health Newspaper and the APHA's timeless publication on infectious diseases, the Control of Communicable Diseases Manual.
Theodore Brown Professor, Department of Health Sciences University of Rochester Medical Center
Theodore Brown is a historian of medicine, public health, and health policy. He has conducted research on the history of the biopsychosocial approach and on translational medicine; the history of twentieth and early twenty-first century U.S. health policy; the influence of organized philanthropy on medical research, health policy, and medical education, and the history of American and global public health. He is a Contributing Editor for History of the American Journal of Public Health.

Working for the CDC, Dr. Willis has lead an effort to improve public health communications using motion animated comics. Dr. Willis latest work shows how engaging the community to craft an honest story can amplify the reach of public health agencies and improve health outcomes for everyone.
Dr. Leigh A. Willis is a Behavioral Scientist in the Health Communication Science Office in the National Center for HIV/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis, STD, and TB Prevention. His broad research interests include Health Communication, Sexual Risk, Mental Health, Violence Prevention, Health Disparities, Intervention Development, Health Communication and Evaluation. His research experiences include a broad range of settings, research methods and studies.
