Ouro Preto and Mariana are cities in the Minas Gerais state in Brazil, near to which were big discoveries of gold. In both cities are located numerous churches with stunning golden decorations. In the mines around those cities, so much gold was mined, that in the 18th century they were one of the biggest gold producers to Portuguese kingdom. Nowadays this past wealth is reminded by rich decorations inside numerous churches of Ouro Preto and Mariana and by the Mina da Passagem, which is the biggest gold mine opened for tourists in the world. Ouro Preto with its pleasant atmosphere is a right city to learn something more about Brazilian history and to relax over a local meal or cachaca.

O programa Expedições vai a Minas Gerais para registrar a trajetória de uma cidade que nasce como um arraial de mineração e, ao longo de seus 300 anos, se transforma numa das jóias da arte barroca brasileira: Ouro Preto. Lá, os ideais da liberdade convivem com os da tradição. Preservar e mudar foram a receita encontrada para se manter viva no panteão de cidades imprescindíveis para o entendimento do Brasil.
Paula Saldanha e Roberto Werneck iniciam a viagem ao interior de Minas, que assistiu à chegada dos primeiros bandeirantes ao local que viria se transformar, pouco tempo depois, em Vila Rica, região repleta do ouro que alimentou sonhos políticos, artísticos e de prosperidade.
O historiador Milton Teixeira concede uma entrevista com relatos detalhados desse processo de três séculos. A escritora Angela Leite Xavier, o diretor do Museu da Inconfidência, Rui Mourão, e Vicente de Paula Gomes, funcionário do Teatro Municipal de Ouro Preto, complementam o quadro de entrevistados.
Expedições documenta o Ciclo do Ouro na cidade mineira, o surgimento de uma leva de artistas primorosos, dos quais destaca-se Mestre Aleijadinho. O Barroco e o Rococó mineiro, além do conjunto arquitetônico e urbanístico muito bem preservados. O programa leva o telespectador a conhecer um pouco da vida de personagens marcantes, como Tiradentes, Chico Rei e Marília de Dirceu. Deslumbrar-se com a beleza de algumas das dezenas de igrejas da antiga Vila Rica, conhecer o Museu da Inconfidência e a antiga Casa de Ópera.

Minas Gerais
Minas Gerais (Portuguese pronunciation: [ˈminɐz ʒeˈɾajs]) is a state in the north of Southeastern Brazil. It ranks as the second most populous, the third by gross domestic product (GDP), and the fourth largest by area in the country. The state's capital and largest city, Belo Horizonte, is a major urban and finance center in Latin America, and is the sixth largest municipality in Brazil, after the cities of São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Salvador, Brasilia and Fortaleza, but its metropolitan area is the third largest in Brazil with just over 5,500,000 inhabitants, after those of São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. Minas Gerais is the Brazilian state with the largest number of presidents of Brazil; Brazil's current president, Dilma Rousseff, born in Belo Horizonte, is one of them.
With an area of 586,528 square kilometres (226,460 sq mi) (larger than Metropolitan France) it is the fourth most extensive state in Brazil. The main producer of coffee and milk in the country, Minas Gerais is known for its heritage of architecture and colonial art in historical cities such as São João del-Rei, Congonhas, Ouro Preto, Diamantina, Tiradentes and Mariana. In the south, the tourist points are the hydro mineral spas, such as Caxambu, São Lourenço, Poços de Caldas, São Thomé das Letras, Monte Verde and the national parks of Caparaó and Canastra. The landscape of the State is marked by mountains, valleys, and large areas of fertile lands. In the Serra do Cipó, Sete Lagoas, Cordisburgo and Lagoa Santa, the caves and waterfalls are the attractions. Some of Brazil's most famous caverns are located there. In recent years, the state has emerged as one of the largest economic forces of Brazil, exploring its great economic potential.

Lá, os ideais da liberdade convivem com os da tradição. Preservar e mudar foram a receita encontrada para se manter viva no panteão de cidades imprescindíveis para o entendimento do Brasil.
Paula Saldanha e Roberto Werneck iniciam a viagem ao interior de Minas, que assistiu à chegada dos primeiros bandeirantes ao local que viria se transformar, pouco tempo depois, em Vila Rica, região repleta do ouro que alimentou sonhos políticos, artísticos e de prosperidade.
O historiador Milton Teixeira concede uma entrevista com relatos detalhados desse processo de três séculos. A escritora Angela Leite Xavier, o diretor do Museu da Inconfidência, Rui Mourão, e Vicente de Paula Gomes, funcionário do Teatro Municipal de Ouro Preto, complementam o quadro de entrevistados.
Expedições documenta o Ciclo do Ouro na cidade mineira, o surgimento de uma leva de artistas primorosos, dos quais destaca-se Mestre Aleijadinho. O Barroco e o Rococó mineiro, além do conjunto arquitetônico e urbanístico muito bem preservados. Su población estimada para el 2004 era de 68.208 habitantes. Se trata de una de las ciudades más importantes de la historia del Brasil, albergando varios de los monumentos más relevantes del 'Ciclo del Oro'. Fue declarada Patrimonio Cultural de la Humanidad por la UNESCO. El municipio está dividido en doce distritos: Amarantina, Antônio Pereira, Cachoeira do Campo, Engenheiro Correia, Glaura, Lavras Novas, Miguel Burnier, Santa Rita, Santo Antônio do Leite, Santo Antônio do Salto, São Bartolomeu y Rodrigo Silva.

Officially, 800 tons of gold were sent to Portugal in the 18th century. Other gold circulated illegally, and still other gold remained in the colony to adorn churches and for other uses.
Ouro Preto é um município do estado de Minas Gerais, no Brasil. Abriga uma população de 70 227 habitantes, conforme o censo de 2010, está distribuída em 34 272 homens e 35 955 mulheres. O município foi fundado em 1711, por meio da fusão de diversos arraiais, fundados por bandeirantes. Ouro Preto localiza-se em uma das principais áreas do ciclo do ouro. Oficialmente, foram enviadas a Portugal 800 toneladas de ouro no século XVIII, isso sem contar o que circulou de maneira ilegal, nem o que permaneceu na colônia, como por exemplo o ouro empregado na ornamentação das igrejas. O município chegou a ser a cidade mais populosa da América Latina, contando com cerca de 40 mil pessoas em 1730 e, décadas após, 80 mil. Àquela época, a população de Nova York era de menos da metade desse número de habitantes e a população de São Paulo não ultrapassava 8 mil.
