"Edie (Ciao Baby)'" is a hard rock song by English band The Cult. It appeared on their fourth studio album Sonic Temple in 1989. It was also released as the second single from that album in 1989. A promotional video was also created. An acoustic version of the song was released in 2000 on the compilation album The Best of Rare Cult.
The Edie in the song is Edie Sedgwick, one of Andy Warhol's actresses.
According to a 1989 interview with vocalist/lyricist Ian Astbury:
The cover of the single features the iconic Ciao! Manhattan photo.
Edith Minturn "Edie" Sedgwick (April 20, 1943 – November 16, 1971) was an American heiress, socialite, actress, and fashion model. She is best known for being one of Andy Warhol's superstars. Sedgwick became known as "The Girl of the Year" in 1965 after starring in several of Warhol's short films in the 1960s. She was dubbed an "It Girl", while Vogue magazine also named her a "Youthquaker".
Sedgwick's family was long established in Massachusetts history. Her seventh-great grandfather, English-born Robert Sedgwick, was the first Major General of the Massachusetts Bay Colony settling in Charlestown, Massachusetts in 1635. Sedgwick's family later originated from Stockbridge, Massachusetts where her great-great-great grandfather Judge Theodore Sedgwick had settled after the American Revolution. Theodore married Pamela Dwight of the New England Dwight family who was the daughter of Abigail (née Williams) Dwight. Ephraim Williams, the founder of Williams College, was Sedgwick's fifth-great grandfather. Judge Theodore Sedgwick was the first to plead and win a case for the freedom of a black woman, Elizabeth Freeman, under the Massachusetts Bill of Rights that declared all men to be born free and equal. Her great-great-great paternal grandfather, William Ellery, was a signatory of the United States Declaration of Independence.
The Cult are a British rock band formed in 1983. They gained a dedicated following in the UK in the mid-1980s as a post-punk/gothic rock band with singles such as "She Sells Sanctuary", before breaking mainstream in the US in the late 1980s as a hard rock band with singles such as "Love Removal Machine" and "Fire Woman". The band fuse a "heavy metal revivalist" sound with the "pseudo-mysticism ... of the Doors [and] the guitar-orchestrations of Led Zeppelin ... while adding touches of post-punk goth rock". Since their earliest form in Bradford during 1981, the band have had various line-ups; the longest-serving members are vocalist Ian Astbury and guitarist Billy Duffy, the band's two songwriters.
After moving to London, the band released the album Love in 1985, which charted at No. 4 in the UK, and which included singles such as "She Sells Sanctuary" and "Rain". In the late 1980s, the band supplemented their post-punk sound with hard rock in their third album, Electric; the polish on this new sound was facilitated by Rick Rubin, who produced the record. Their fourth album, Sonic Temple, proceeded in a similar vein, and these two LPs enabled them to break into the North American market.

Edie Arlisa Brickell (born March 10, 1966) is an American singer-songwriter widely known for 1988's Shooting Rubberbands at the Stars, the debut album by Edie Brickell & New Bohemians, which went to No. 4 on the Billboard 200 chart. She is married to Paul Simon.
Brickell was born in Oak Cliff, Dallas, Texas, to Paul Edward Brickell and his wife, Larry Jean (Sellers) Linden. She was raised with her older sister, Laura Strain. She attended Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts in Dallas, and later studied at Southern Methodist University until she joined a band and decided to focus on songwriting.
In 1985, Brickell was invited to sing one night with friends from her high school in a local folk rock group, New Bohemians. She would join the band as lead singer. After the band was signed to a recording contract, the label changed the group's name to Edie Brickell & New Bohemians. Their 1988 debut album, Shooting Rubberbands at the Stars, became a critical and commercial success, including the single "What I Am". The band's follow-up album, Ghost of a Dog (1990), was a deliberate effort to highlight the band's eclectic personality and move away from the pop sensibility of their first record.

A tribute to Edith (Edie) Minturn Sedgwick, a beautiful, wealthy, and troubled heiress who partied and lived the high life with a laundry list of celebrities, actors, artists, musicians, etc, at Andy Warhol's 'Factory'. 'Warhol's darling queen', she was the star of the Factory and was at the center of activity there. She became a minor celebrity herself over the years as a model, fashion icon, and actress. She died of a drug overdose at the age of 28.

Andy Warhol and Edie Sedgwick, the first couple of Pop Art, make a very rare national television appearance on The Merv Griffin Show in October of 1965. A fascinating look at the quirky duo as they subject themselves to a little mainstream scrutiny with some mixed results. Andy, at first takes a vow of silence but eventually warms up enough to grunt a few one-word answers. Merv Griffin had over 5000 guests appear on his show from 1963-1986.
