Japan (i/dʒəˈpæn/; Japanese: 日本 Nippon [nip̚põ̞ɴ] or Nihon [nihõ̞ɴ]; formally 日本国 Nippon-koku or Nihon-koku, "State of Japan") is an island country in East Asia. Located in the Pacific Ocean, it lies to the east of the Sea of Japan, the East China Sea, China, North Korea, South Korea and Russia, stretching from the Sea of Okhotsk in the north to the East China Sea and Taiwan in the south. The kanji that make up Japan's name mean "sun origin", and Japan is often called the "Land of the Rising Sun".
Japan is a stratovolcanic archipelago of 6,852 islands. The four largest are Honshu, Hokkaido, Kyushu, and Shikoku, which make up about ninety-seven percent of Japan's land area. Japan's population of 126 million is the world's tenth largest. Approximately 9.1 million people live in Tokyo, the capital city of Japan, which is the sixth largest city proper in the OECD. The Greater Tokyo Area, which includes Tokyo and several surrounding prefectures, is the world's largest metropolitan area with over 35 million residents and the world's largest urban agglomeration economy.

On the 10th March 2011, Australian Travellers Alex Wain, Dan Reyes and Jesse Perez went to Japan for the trip of a lifetime. The day after they landed, a 9.0 earthquake struck off the coast of Sendai, triggering a tsunami that would go on to leave over 20,000 people dead. Bewildered by the horrible scenes unfolding in front of them, and as piles of concerned messages from family and friends back home came in, they assessed their options in their current destinations of Osaka and Kyoto. But while the TV broadcasts were locked on 24 hours a day detailing the disaster, walking the streets would reveal a different side of Japan that wasn't shown on news services around the world. Alex, Dan and Jesse saw a resilient nation, obviously shaken by the disaster, but determined to not let it affec...

The slideshow is a compilation of different areas in Kyoto during the past Cherry blossom seasons. According to the current forecasts, the cherry blossoms are expected to open according to their average schedule or slightly delayed in 2012. The blossoms are forecast to start opening across wide areas of Kyushu, Shikoku and Honshu in late March and reach full bloom in early April. "Hanami" is the centuries-old practice of picnicking under a blooming sakura or ume tree. The custom is said to have started during the Nara Period (710–794) when it was ume blossoms that people admired in the beginning. But by the Heian Period (794–1185), cherry blossoms came to attract more attention and hanami was synonymous with sakura. From then on, in tanka and haiku, "Flowers" meant "sakura." The custom was...

Houshi Ryokan was founded around 1,300 years ago and it has always been managed by the same family since then. It is the oldest still running family business in the world. This ryokan (a traditional japanese style hotel) was built over a natural hot spring in Awazu in central Japan in the year 718. Until 2011, it held the record for being the oldest hotel in the world. Houshi Ryokan has been visited by the Japanese Imperial Family and countless great artists over the centuries. Its buildings were destroyed by natural disasters many times, but the family has always rebuilt. The garden as well as some parts of the hotel are over 400 years old. The Kanamara Matsuri is an annual Shinto fertility festival held in Kawasaki, Japan. The penis forms the central theme of the event that is reflected everywhere—in illustrations, candy, carved vegetables, decorations, and a mikoshi parade. The Kanamara Matsuri is centered around a local penis-venerating shrine once popular among prostitutes who wished to pray for protection against sexually transmitted diseases. It is said that there are divine protections also in business prosperity and the clan's prosperity, easy delivery, marriage, and married couple harmony. There is also a legend of a sharp-toothed demon that hid inside the vagina of a young girl and castrated two young men on their wedding nights with the young girl before a blacksmith fashioned an iron phallus to break the demon's ...

KESEN-NUMA CITY, JAPAN - It's 5am on the the north eastern tip of Japan's main island of Honshu, and 75 tons of dead shark is being meticulously arranged into a neat grid of tidy piles, of twenty sharks per pile. If you thought shark finning was exclusively a Chinese problem, think again. Welcome to Kesen-numa City, Japan's shark fin capital. Here, six days a week, small teams of Japanese workers go about the hushed business of industrial shark-finning. By 6.30am, with piles arranged, the sharks are disemboweled first. Hearts are ripped efficiently from their bodies by men wearing brightly coloured rubber boots and aprons. At 7am, the shark corpses are cleaned of their blood by workers wielding water hoses. And by 8am, small teams are silently moving up and down aisles and rows like rob...
Washoku, the traditional cuisine of Japan, was given world cultural heritage status by the United Nations on Wednesday. French cooking is the only other cuisine that had been distinguished as a national culinary tradition. The Japanese "washoku" embraces seasonal ingredients, a unique taste, time consuming preparation and a style of eating steeped in centuries of tradition. Japanese food focuses on the aesthetics of the meal, including fancy ceramic and lacquer-ware, and food textures and shapes, often placed in a decorative fashion, sometimes with inedible items, such as an autumn leaf, for effect. At its heart is the savoury, "umami", based on the flavour from dried bonito flakes and seaweed, Japan's equivalent of soup stock. It is recognised as a fundamental taste in Japanese cui...

For the past six generations, the Fukushima family has mastered and preserved the intricate art of Japanese confectionery known as wagashi. These ornate sweets, meant to reflect the delicate beauty of nature, were traditionally created to accompany the Japanese tea ceremony. They are often shaped to resemble traditional flower motifs, and change with the shifting seasons. At Fukushimaya, approximately 200 different types of sweets are created throughout the year, with daffodils and camellia blossoms ushering in spring. Using designs that date back to Japan’s Edo period, the Fukushima family is keeping a deeply-rooted Japanese art form alive. Welcome to the View from Above! A series where we take you on a Journey to some of the most beautiful places on earth! Japan is the furthest point in what was called the ‘Far East’ by Imperial Europe, and is perhaps the most categorical in that respect. It may come as a culture-shock for some; the deep, in-grown, ancient traditions, taboos, customs and norms of the Japanese people. But those same customs and norms, so obsessed with perfection, are incredibly beautiful, complementing the natural beauty of the Japanese landscape. Travel with View from Above to Tokyo’s metropolitan skyline, Kyoto’s shrines and temples, Fuji’s iconic cliffs, and the elegant pagodas and toris of the Japanese countryside. Captured by DJI unmanned recreational drones, enjoy some unique and incredible shots of t...

When visiting Tokyo, it does not take long to realize “you're not in Kansas anymore”. The massive metropolis offer a feast for the senses: blinding neon, the bleeps and blips of Pachinko parlors, adventurous cuisine and music that is experimental, animated, and sometimes, just plain unusual. On this episode of Voyager we get a taste of the cultural umami that is Tokyo, and it is voyage of discovery filled with surprises you will never forget. From the outlandish fashion of J-Pop, the surprising pastime of a Japanese jazz giant, Tokyo’s rock guitar superstar and a humorous hip-hop freestyler, we meet the colorful characters that make Tokyo one of the world’s greatest cities. Our journey is powered by ample bowls of delicious ramen noodles, first-class shots of sake and the occasional octopu...

In part two of my video travel guide to India I travel to Bodhgaya, one of the most sacred places in all of the Buddhist religion. It was at this location 2,500 years ago that a young Prince Siddhartha sat under a fig tree, meditated and found enlightenment, thus becoming the Buddha. I start off by visiting the many temples that have been built by various Buddhists from around the world, including temples dedicated to Buddhists living in China, Japan, Tibet and Nepal. I then visit the Tergar Monastery, one of the largest Buddhist complexes in the region, which is a short walk from the main road. I then head to the sacred Mahabodhi Temple complex in the center of town. At sunset it is a scenic, peaceful time to explore the grounds, which include a large monument built at the Bodhi Tree it...

The World Before Me is a modern-day round the world trip, set to the words of a 19th century poet. “Afoot and light-hearted I take to the open road, healthy, free, the world before me.” 160 years have passed since Walt Whitman penned this text, but feelings about travel remain the same. We’re still inspired by the open road and still excited by discovering the unknown. In the fall of 2015, while preparing for a trip that would take me literally around the world, I couldn't shake the desire to share the experience of travel, which for me is a very personal one. This film is the culmination of that desire. I carried my camera for 5 months through 15 countries. The endless metropolis of Tokyo, tiny islands of The Philippines, busy streets of India, the Swiss Alps and the Scottish Highland...

Osaka's Gate Tower Building is an amazing sight to see because ... well, how should I put this? A highway goes through the building. It literally does, and there is a story behind it. In this episode, John not only goes inside to see where the elevator takes him, he also drives through it -- in a Lotus Seven. We'll also go up the Umeda Sky Building and catch some fantastic angles of the city, skyline and Gate Tower Building. THE STORY: Here it is from the building owner. It’s basically a land rights dispute with a sort of happy ending. The property was owned by a business (coal and wood company) since the early Meiji era but when business declined, so did the buildings in the 1970s. The area was approved to be redeveloped in 1983 but the property holder refused to give up the land, ...

http://edwin-europe.com/japan_film.html For 35 years, Edwin Japan have worked on improving efficiency, quality, construction and washing methods by studying and engineering machinery used in the denim manufacturing process. It is impossible to improve what one makes without spending the time everyday to master what one does, turning ones profession into a craft. The denim technicians at Edwin are true craftsmen, as their commitment and attention to the product is unquestionably what makes the Edwin product stand out from the mass of denim available within the market today. Whilst this remains ‘production’, the working philosophy remains closer to a greatly more efficient and productive Artisanal method. They are ‘engineers’. Each person, over the course of a long period is encouraged ...

**To all those affected by the earthquake and tsunami. You are in our thoughts and prayers. We wish for the safety of you all.** Japan is one of the most beautiful countries in the world. This is my Japan. This is one of the many reasons why I love Japan. I shot this in many locations around Japan in the summer of 2009. Some of the location include Tokyo, Matsuyama, Imabari, Nagano, Gifu, and Ishizushisan. I started this as a personal project to try and capture the beauty that I see in Japan. It started as just that... But now that I have finished, I see it only as a beginning. This video, along with SAIJO MATSURI (www.vimeo.com/7458088) is just the start of a much larger project that I have now decided to do. Anyone interested in helping fund/produce this dream of mine please feel fr...

This is my final thesis project. I created info-graphic, motion piece. My objective is to make Japanese people to think about that everything happening here in Japan, isn't that normal. So I created this video from foreigner's point of view, rather than Japanese people's point of view. Both English and Japanese versions are available. By the way, please don't call me racist, because I am one of short, small eyes Japanese.
Don't tell me not to live Just sit and putter Life's candy and the sun's a ball of butter Don't bring around a cloud 'round To rain on my parade
Don't tell me not to fly I've simply got to If someone takes a spill It's me not you Who told you you're allowed To rain on my parade
I'll march my band out And I'll beat my drum And if I'm spammed out Your turn at bat sir At least I didn't fake it Hat sir Nearly didn't make it
Maybe I'm just a rose of sheer perfection A freckle on the nose of life's complexion A cinder of a shiny apple of it's eye
I've gotta fly once I gotta try once Only can die once Right, sir? Love is juicy, juicy and I'll say I gotta have my bite, sir!
Well, look out love oh babe I'm coming Don't tell me not to march My heart's a drummer Who told you you're allowed To rain on my parade
I'm gonna live and live now Get what I want, I know how One roll for the whole shebang One throw that bell will go clang High on the target and wham One shot, one gunshot and bam!
Don't tell me not to live Just sit and putter Life's candy and the sun's a ball of butter Don't bring around a cloud To rain on my parade
