Plot: Coyote and Chomi are making it through this final decade of the century by patching together the last crumbs of a bygone era, against the backdrop of a weird, suburban world, with refineries belching fire, railway tracks crisscrossing the cityscape and the smell of the river right next door... Together, the young lovers recreate the universe and move the planets around the way others build houses of cards. All the while, Chomi the student, the future dropout, never loses sight of his ambition - the movies - while Coyote dreams of repopulating the earth with a child which she and her man will produce. The course of love does not run smoothly, however; jealousy, betrayal, little white lies and aborted departures have to be contended with. How will the pair survive? Illusion may disappear, but love endures, unchanging.

After Luke disappears, it's all out war between the competing car shops, and no nasty trick is off limits as Rudy and his gang fight to keep Roy from taking Luke's property. Fortune-huntress Gladys Hayden (Virginia Field) moves into rooms adjoining Henry's at his swank New York hotel. He joins a large crowd on the street and suddenly finds himself being interviewed by Jean Mitchell (Virginia Wells) on a "Streets of New York" broadcast. When Henry says he is the only millionaire from Badger, Oklahoma, Jean impulsively offers to introduce him to any listener who sends in a box-top of her sponsor's face powder. Henry invites Jean to dine at the Automat and a ride home on the subway and, since he borrows nickels from her for food and the subway, she doubts he is really a millionaire. She is unaware he couldn't get change for a $100 bill. On the subway, they encounter Spike Jones and His City Slickers and, learning they are out of work, Henry gives them each $100 bills. Millions of women, clamouring for dates with Henry, send in box-tops. Jean and her uncle dream up a radio program that promises some lucky Cinderella a date with Henry each night. Jean puts on an act that makes Henry, self-vowed woman-hater, think her job is in jeopardy and he goes along. And Gladys makes strides with Henry with her phoney southern accent. Plot: Two people have been murdered in Clayton by a mysterious killer using a blow-gun. Socialite club-leader Phoebe Witherspoon comments that "the town needs another Ma Pilkington, the best police chief the town ever had", and the town's newspaper editor, Henry Wright sends reporter Breezy to find the late Ma Pilkington's daughter, Jane "Pilky" Pilkington. She is given the job of tracking down the killer and policeman Mulligan is assigned to assist her. But after two more unsolved murders, Wright buys "Pilky" a ticket back to Horsetrot, the town in which they found her, and summons a Chicago detective to take over the case. "Pilky" is depressed by this turn of events and more so when she learns that Breezy is engaged to Maybelle, an actress. Mulligan is also fired. The killer strikes again by killing stage producer Tommy-Gun Tucker and the Chicago detective decides to go back to the safe confines of the Windy City, leaving "Pilky" again in charge. She sees Maybelle take a note out of Tucker's pocket during the investigation. She filches the note and, through it, tracks down the killer as being town coroner Dr. Bleaker, who was mixed up in some shady deals with Tucker and Maybelle. Mulligan is re-instated and "Pilky" remains in Clayton as the police chief.
