I got lost in Shinjuku Station which is not only the busiest station in Tokyo Japan, but is also the busiest subway station in the world! Jessica wanted to find a Daiso (Japanese dollar store) and we went down to the second or third subbasement of one of several malls attached to Shinjuku station. The internet and GPS mostly stopped working. The signs were mostly in Japanese. The crazy thing is that everything connected. It was like being in an ant hill! 4 million people in one tiny area.

I asked an American tourist to find West Exit/Entrance at Shinjuku Station, the busiest train station in Japan, which also mean the world's busiest. How long did it take him to find it?
West Exit is 西口 (nishiguchi) in Japanese, but they sometimes translate 西口 as West Entrance, which makes it even more confusing. Also, the interpretation of 西口 is different on different maps (an exit from the gate or an exit from the building). The West Exit/Entrance that we were looking for in this video is West Exit/Entrance that you see when you get off the JR train, with a clear sign that says 西口.
この動画は、昔新宿でよく迷っていた経験から着想を得ました。ちょうどアメリカ人のユーチューバーからコラボのリクエストが来ていたので彼に参加してもらいました。西口って、日本語で言うと西口ですが、訳が安定していなくて、改札から出るときは西口(West Exit)なのに、改札に入るときは西口(West Entrance)なんですよね。日本人でも迷うのにこれは余計に混乱します。しかも地図によって西口の解釈が違ったり。（建物から外に出るところなのか、改札から外に出るところなのか。）

One of Tokyo’s most popular areas, Shinjuku only truly reveals itself at night. Dirty, noisy and somehow vulgar, Shinjuku at night is nonetheless one of the most interesting places to visit in Tokyo. Shinjuku is divided into different smaller areas that are not always welcoming to cameras at night, and for good reason. Among these areas we have the famous “Golden Gai”, a set of small streets crowded with bars that can often fit only a few people at a time and where Japanese salarymen and other partygoers drink until they can no longer walk straight. You will also find “Kabuki-cho”, the “adult” district of Shinjuku with many hostess bars and sometimes more...
Limited in our actions and often asked, not always politely, to “%#$% off”, we tried our best to capture the essence, or spirit if you will, of Shinjuku at night - around its station and along Yasukuni Dori. We hope that you will enjoy this series of 2 videos and we will try our best next time to dig deeper into these forbidden streets.

Shinjuku Station opened in 1885 and today, is one of the busiest in Tokyo which, according to JR, is used by around 4 million people every single day! The station hosts no less than 200 different exits and a total of 51 platforms, which can turn Shinjuku Station into a real maze. So just sit back, relax and enjoy this walk around the iconic Shinjuku Station.

Shinjuku (新宿区, Shinjuku-ku, "New Lodge") is a special ward located in Tokyo Metropolis, Japan. It is a major commercial and administrative centre, housing the busiest railway station in the world (Shinjuku Station) and the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building, the administration centre for the government of Tokyo. As of 2015, the ward has an estimated population of 337,556 and a population density of 18,517 people per km². The total area is 18.23 km².
Geography and neighborhoods
Shinjuku is surrounded by Chiyoda to the east; Bunkyo and Toshima to the north; Nakano to the west, and Shibuya and Minato to the south.
The current city of Shinjuku grew out of several separate towns and villages, which have retained some distinctions despite growing together as part of the Tokyo metropolis.
- Kabukichō: Tokyo's best-known red-light district, renowned for its variety of bars, restaurants, and sex-related establishments.
- Golden Gai: An area of tiny shanty-style bars and clubs. Musicians, artists, journalists, actors and directors gather here, and the ramshackle walls of the bars are literally plastered with film posters.
- Shinjuku Gyoen: A large park, 58.3 hectares, 3.5 km in circumference, blending Japanese traditional, English Landscape and French Formal style gardens.
- Shinjuku Ni-chōme: Tokyo's best-known gay district.

Shinjuku Station
Shinjuku Station (新宿駅, Shinjuku-eki) is a major railway station in Shinjuku and Shibuya wards in Tokyo, Japan.
Serving as the main connecting hub for rail traffic between Tokyo's special wards and Western Tokyo on inter-city rail, commuter rail, and metro lines, the station was used by an average of 3.64 million people per day in 2007, making it, by far, the world's busiest transport hub (and registered as such with Guinness World Records). The station itself has 36 platforms, including an underground arcade, above ground arcade and numerous hallways. There are well over 200 exits. Another 17 platforms (51 total) can be accessed through hallways to 5 directly connected stations without surfacing outside.

Tokyo

Jessica wanted to find a Daiso (Japanese dollar store) and we went down to the second or third subbasement of one of several malls attached to Shinjuku station. The internet and GPS mostly stopped working. The signs were mostly in Japanese. The crazy thing is that everything connected. It was like being in an ant hill! 4 million people in one tiny area. -

How long did it take him to find it? West Exit is 西口 (nishiguchi) in Japanese, but they sometimes translate 西口 as West Entrance, which makes it even more confusing. Also, the interpretation of 西口 is different on different maps (an exit from the gate or an exit from the building). Shinjuku is divided into different smaller areas that are not always welcoming to cameras at night, and for good reason. Among these areas we have the famous “Golden Gai”, a set of small streets crowded with bars that can often fit only a few people at a time and where Japanese salarymen and other partygoers drink until they can no longer walk straight. You will also find “Kabuki-cho”, the “adult” district of Shinjuku with many hostess bars and sometimes more... Limited in our actions and often asked, not always politely, to “%#$% off”, we tried our best to capture the essence, or spirit if you will, of Shinjuku at night - around its station and along Yasukuni Dori. I got lost in Shinjuku Station which is not only the busiest station in Tokyo Japan, but is also the busiest subway station in the world! Jessica wanted to find a Daiso (Japanese dollar store) and we went down to the second or third subbasement of one of several malls attached to Shinjuku station. The internet and GPS mostly stopped working. The signs were mostly in Japanese. The crazy thing is that everything connected. It was like being in an ant hill! 4 million people in one tiny area.

I asked an American tourist to find West Exit/Entrance at Shinjuku Station, the busiest train station in Japan, which also mean the world's busiest. How long did it take him to find it?
West Exit is 西口 (nishiguchi) in Japanese, but they sometimes translate 西口 as West Entrance, which makes it even more confusing. Also, the interpretation of 西口 is different on different maps (an exit from the gate or an exit from the building). The West Exit/Entrance that we were looking for in this video is West Exit/Entrance that you see when you get off the JR train, with a clear sign that says 西口.

Among these areas we have the famous “Golden Gai”, a set of small streets crowded with bars that can often fit only a few people at a time and where Japanese salarymen and other partygoers drink until they can no longer walk straight. You will also find “Kabuki-cho”, the “adult” district of Shinjuku with many hostess bars and sometimes more...
Limited in our actions and often asked, not always politely, to “%#$% off”, we tried our best to capture the essence, or spirit if you will, of Shinjuku at night - around its station and along Yasukuni Dori. The station hosts no less than 200 different exits and a total of 51 platforms, which can turn Shinjuku Station into a real maze. So just sit back, relax and enjoy this walk around the iconic Shinjuku Station.
