Gion (祇園, ぎおん) is a district of Kyoto, Japan, originally developed in the Middle Ages, in front of Yasaka Shrine. The district was built to accommodate the needs of travelers and visitors to the shrine. It eventually evolved to become one of the most exclusive and well-known geisha districts in all of Japan. The geisha in the Gion district (and Kyoto generally) do not refer to themselves as geisha; instead, Gion geisha use the local term geiko. While the term geisha means "artist" or "person of the arts", the more direct term geiko means essentially "a child of the arts" or "a woman of art".
This neighborhood in Kyoto has five hanamachi (geiko communities. There are five hanamachi in Kyoto): Gion Kōbu (祇園甲部) and Gion Higashi (祇園東), which split many years ago; Kōbu is larger, occupying most of the district, while Higashi is smaller and occupies the northeast corner, centered on its rehearsal hall. Despite the considerable decline in the number of geisha in Gion in the last one hundred years, it is still famous for the preservation of forms of traditional architecture and entertainment.
Kyoto (京都市, Kyōto-shi, pronounced [kʲjoːꜜto.ɕi]; UK /kɪˈoʊtoʊ/, US /kiˈoʊ-/, or /ˈkjoʊ-/) is a city located in the central part of the island of Honshu, Japan. It has a population close to 1.5 million. Formerly the Imperial capital of Japan for more than one thousand years, it is now the capital city of Kyoto Prefecture located in the Kansai region, as well as a major part of the Kyoto-Osaka-Kobe metropolitan area. Kyoto is also known as the thousand-year capital.
In Japanese, the city has been called Kyō (京), Miyako (都), or Kyō no Miyako (京の都). In the 11th century, the city was renamed Kyoto ("capital city"), after the Chinese word for capital city, jingdu (京都). After the city of Edo was renamed Tokyo (meaning "Eastern Capital") in 1868, and the seat of the Emperor was transferred there, Kyoto was known for a short time as Saikyō (西京, meaning "Western Capital").
Obsolete spellings for the city's name include Kioto and Meaco. Another term commonly used to refer to the city in the pre-modern period was Keishi (京師), meaning "metropolis" or "capital".
Yasaka Shrine (八坂神社, Yasaka-jinja), once called Gion Shrine (祇園神社, Gion-jinja), is a Shinto shrine in the Gion District of Kyoto, Japan. Situated at the east end of Shijō-dōri (Fourth Avenue), the shrine includes several buildings, including gates, a main hall and a stage.
Initial construction on the Shrine began in 656. The Shrine became the object of Imperial patronage during the early Heian period. In 965, Emperor Murakami ordered that Imperial messengers be sent to report important events to the guardian kami of Japan. These heihaku were initially presented to 16 shrines; and in 991, Emperor Ichijō added three more shrines to Murakami's list. Three years later in 994, Ichijō refined the scope of that composite list by adding Umenomiya Shrine and Gion Shrine.
From 1871 through 1946, Yasaka Shrine was officially designated one of the Kanpei-taisha (官幣大社), meaning that it stood in the first rank of government supported shrines.
In 869 the mikoshi (divine palanquin) of Gion Shrine were paraded through the streets of Kyoto to ward off an epidemic that had hit the city. This was the beginning of the Gion Matsuri, an annual festival which has become world famous.

Here at night you can find many geisha if you look hard, though most of those you will see walking arouond having fun in the day are just tourists or people who work for some kind of agency. Either way this is a great place to come to take pictures because it is so beautiful and peaceful. This old city really captures the traditional spirit of Japan.
Gion is Kyoto's Geisha District. The traditional wooden teahouses and merchant shops lend an old Japan feeling as you walk around Gion's streets and narrow alley-ways. If you’re coming from Kyoto station, you could take the 206 bus and get off in front of the Yasaka Shrine. You could also take the subway to Sanjo, but you'll need to walk a further 10 or 15 minutes. Gion-Shijo is the closest train station. This is on the Keihan line, so you might have to transfer from the subway. Most visitors to Kyoto, Japan are here to enjoy the temples, gardens and the historic sites but you'll also find that downtown Kyoto is very appealing. It's a busy modern shopping area that features a couple of major boulevards, several large department stores and smaller pedestrian-only streets, and there’s many blocks of boutiques and restaurants, cafés and thousands of local residents filling the sidewalks. Near the Yasaka Shrine in Kyoto you'll find the most famous downtown historic neighborhood, Gion, the neighborhood of the geisha or as they say in Kyoto, the geiko. And the little side streets are where you want to venture to see the really charming part of old Kyoto. Hanamikoji is the main side street in Gion where you're most likely to run into some geisha. Gion District is a historic area in Kyoto city, close to the sizzle of the downtown Kyoto and located between the downtown and the Yasaka Shrine. In olden times this place was used as a place to relax by the travelers to Kyoto city and Yasaka Shrine. The old charms still remain but now it has become more commercial with many drinking/eating establishments, Geisha houses and even Pachinko Parlors. But it is one of the most visited places in Kyoto city and reminds the visitors of the by gone charm of the ancient Kyoto city.
Gion is the geisha district of Kyoto, an area with old streets and traditional Japanese wooden houses (machiya). It's absolutely beautiful, and my favourite of the old areas of Kyoto. Gion is also the area of Kyoto where you have a chance of spotting a geisha. It's where the geisha tea houses and theatres are, where the geisha and maiko live and work. I've heard it's a magical place to explore in the evening and at night time. Gion is also home to what my guidebook said is "the loveliest street in the whole of Asia" - Shirakawa-Minami Dori, which you can see in the video. Kyoto, Japan, has long been considered one of the country’s most beautiful cities. Once the capital of the nation, Kyoto is now an ultra-modern haven that retains a great deal of its ancient charm. To see some of this long-established glamour, make your way to Kyoto Tower. Just two miles east of the tower is Gion, an entertainment quarter and home to many of Kyoto’s famous geishas. As you walk east through Gion, you’ll find even more old architecture, including several Ryokan, or traditional Japanese inns. Many date back to the Edo period, which ranged from 1603 to 1868. During your Kyoto tour, take a rickshaw ride to the Sannen-zaka and Ninen-zaka districts, where cars are prohibited and traditional teahouses and temples adorn the nearby landscape. Kyoto is known as “The City of Ten Th...
