Small Business
Economy Confidence at Its
Highest Since October 2007
Small business confidence in the economy has soared to its highest reading since
October 2007, rising from 93.4 in March to 95.2 in April, according to the
National Federation of Independent Business. This optimism comes despite an economy still growing slower than in past recoveries. The monthly Small Business Optimism
Index reflected a growing confidence among businesses and analysts since the end of a winter that chilled shopping, hiring and other financial growth.
Majority of Small Businesses
Support Minimum Wage Hike
Debate about raising the minimum wage continues, and the impact to small businesses and the economy is a sticking
point in the argument.
Small Business Majority asked a random sample of small business owners what they think about raising the wage and found 57 percent support a proposal that would increase the federal minimum wage to $10.10/hour. The vast majority of small employers already pay their workers more than minimum wage and more than half agree increasing the minimum wage would not only help the economy, it would make low-income consumers more likely to spend money--driving up demand for goods and services at other small businesses.
Women, the Leading
Group in
Business Startups
If you go to work for a newer business, there's a good chance you'll be working for a woman. Between
1997 and 2014, the number of women-owned businesses in the
U.S. rose by 68 percent, twice the growth rate for men and nearly one and a-half times the rate for all companies.
"Women are seeing that they can be entrepreneurs as part of just a normal career trajectory.
It's no longer you're the outlier as the business owner. It's actually being embraced as this is part of what I'm going to be doing with my career."

Greater Phoenix Economic Council. ‘
Today we have
300 companies that are actively evaluating metro Phoenix.’ Camacho said cost is one factor behind the expansions. ‘The idea of these California companies is finding a secondary location to optimize their cost position and get a return on cost of capital for their investors,’ he said. ‘Ultimately the metro Phoenix market has been a great landing spot for a lot of these companies in that again, all of them are trying to enhance revenue, improve
EBIDTA, and
Arizona is a great position to be in when you have about 40% lower cost of operations and at the same time you’re accessing a top quality labor force.’ Phoenix is trying to attract more companies with a new business strategy known as
Velocity, which seeks to strengthen the economy by creating high paying jobs that focus on innovation and technology.

Pima County.
Hi.
It's the
Pima (County) Bunch!
Where are the jobs?
Yo no sé!
Where are they?
Pima County is now so good at saying no, they've forgotten how to say yes.
We know the
County doesn't like copper mines.
Or home builders, the prosperous
City of
Marana -
Annexation.
What does Pima County like?
Is it too much to ask supervisors
Ramon Valadez,
Sharon Bronson and
Richard Elias -
Who pull down $80,
000 salaries plus a shiny new
Prius and free gas
If a few of the rest of us can have quality jobs as well?
Maybe it is too much.
With our County poverty rate, one in four children going to bed hungry, our best minds --college grads-- fleeing for places with actual jobs, what's the plan from the Pima County
Board of Supervisors?
Blame those evil
State legislators for balancing the budget?
Pass the buck to TREO? Blame
George Bush!
All the above?
In a county of one million people, unfortunately
... we can't all work for the government.
And we can't reply on just growth.
Obviously.
Two big organizations promote Pima County, focusing on jobs and the local economy. Who are they?
Let's see.
The Metropolitan Tucson
Convention and
Visitors Bureau
Easy for you to say.
...takes our tax dollars to promote the region. How... are they doing?
Travel and Leisure magazine just ranked Tucson the
25th most underrated destination...in the
WORLD!
You mean they're really good at keeping us a secret?
They excel at keeping our hotel rooms and convention spaces... empty.
Then we have TREO: Tucson
Regional Economic
Opportunity. TREO made headlines this year for the monster parties they throw in
San Diego. Fly everyone out.
Party down.
Why can't
I go to one of their parties
They go to
Austin,
Portland,
Huntsville, Albuquerque--all looking for that magic formula to bring in companies and jobs.
After seven years and $13 million taxpayer dollars, and another $3 million from the private sector, how is TREO doing?
Supervisor Sharon Bronson,
Chair of TREO since it started makes it sound like they've brought in over 10,000 jobs.
Highly-paid TREO director Joe Snell claims 16,000 jobs.
But in reality?
The UA's
Marshall Vest reported that only 800 jobs were created. While
Phoenix created... 69,000 jobs.
Wait, SO... not 10,
500 or 16,000?
Sharon, Snell? Can you tell me... are we making up numbers to justify our budgets before the upcoming election?
And the parties? In San Diego?
Must be the parties.
CEO Magazine continues to rank
Arizona among the Top Ten states to do business in.
While
CNN ranks Pima County as one of the worst places to do business.
In Arizona?
In the entire country.
We're right down there with...
Detroit.
Proud yet?
Not yet. But check this out: In the last decade under TREO and the Pima County Board of Supervisors...
Construction jobs -- down 34%
Manufacturing jobs -- down 27%
Transportation and warehousing -- down
16%
Information industries -- down 44%
Are our officials better at creating jobs or "bitterly clinging" to their own?
Voters of Pima County...
It's up to you!

Time-lapse video of McCord Hall at Arizona State University's W. P. Carey School of Business
McCord
Hall, the new addition to the
W. P. Carey School, is named for
Sharon Dupont McCord and the late
Bob McCord.
The impressive facility at
Arizona State University features modern architecture, technologically advanced tiered and flat classrooms, a multipurpose event space, a new graduate-level career center, team rooms, study areas, outdoor assembly areas, a lounge for honors undergrads, and a health-conscious café. McCord Hall is also environmentally friendly, with less water and energy use than similar buildings and a solar array that returns power to the campus grid.
The project totaled $57 million, and the return on investment is expected to be great.
"We estimate the project has already had an economic impact on the gross state product of $64 million and the creation of 880 jobs," says
Professor Dennis Hoffman, director of the
L. William Seidman Research Institute at the W. P. Carey
School of Business. "Of course, the value of the construction does not include the added value that will accrue from the human capital produced in McCord Hall's learning environment, allowing students to acquire knowledge and skills to compete in today's economy."
To learn more about McCord Hall, visit

The W. P.
Carey School's full-time
MBA, evening MBA, online MBA and undergraduate business programs are all currently ranked Top 30 in the nation by

Part 1 of 12 - This module introduces viewers to the field of supply chain management. It describes the complex supply chain of a simple product, a bottle of water. The video also illustrates the importance of supply chain managers and their skill sets in our modern global economy for both manufacturing and service industries. In defining supply chain management, the video also hopes to educate and inspire business students, young and old, about the opportunities available to those with supply chain management degrees.
This is the first installment in
