The Germans invaded the Soviet Union in the summer of 1941, and looked poised to take Moscow by October that year. With the benefit of hindsight, popular opinion has labelled Hitler as virtually insane for invading the Soviet Union, but at the time many people - including those influential in both Britain and America - thought his decision was a sound one. Indeed, Hitler came much closer to pulling off his grand plan than the Soviet Union was ever prepared to admit.
The German Blitzkrieg technique was as devastating in Russia as it had been in the rest of Europe. The scene was set for a war of annihilation waged by the Nazis against the Soviets with no mercy shown by either side. One week into the German invasion, 150,000 Soviet soldiers were either dead or wounded - more than during the five months of the Battle of the Somme.
As the German armies swept further into the Russian heartland, one million Soviet troops were drafted to protect Kiev. But despite Stalin's ruthless order forbidding any city to surrender, Kiev fell and 600,000 Soviet soldiers were captured. By October 1941, three million Soviet soldiers were prisoners of war. New testimony and documentary evidence can now reveal that Stalin was seriously considering suing for peace and had even organised a 'getaway' train to take him to safety as German guns started pounding Moscow. His decision to stay and fight was a crucial turning point in the war.
In the whole of history there has never been a war like it. In its scale of destruction, the war on the Eastern Front was unique; from Leningrad to the Crimea, from Kiev to Stalingrad, the Soviet Union was devastated - at least 25 million Soviet citizens died. And in the end what did the German aggressors have to show for it?
A broken, divided country, which had lost much of its territory, and a people burdened with the knowledge that they had launched a racist war of annihilation and, in the process, spawned the cancer of the Holocaust. But at the time of the attack there were many people - and not just Germans - who thought that the decision to invade the Soviet Union was a rational act in pursuit of German self-interest and, moreover, that this was a war the Germans would win.
In the summer of 1940 Adolf Hitler, despite his swift and dramatic victory over France, faced a major military and political problem. The British would not do what seemed logical and what the Führer expected - they would not make peace. Yet Hitler was frustrated by geography - in the shape of the English Channel - from following his immediate instincts and swiftly crushing the British just as he had the French.
Hitler did in fact order preparations to be made for an invasion of England, but he was always half-hearted in his desire to mount a large seaborne landing. Germany, unlike Britain, was not a sea power and the Channel was a formidable obstacle. Even if air superiority could be gained, there remained the powerful British Navy. And there was another, ideological, reason why Hitler was not fully committed to invading Britain. For him, it would have been a distraction. Britain contained neither the space, nor the raw materials, that he believed the new German Empire needed. And he admired the British - Hitler often remarked how much he envied their achievement in subjugating India.
Worse, if the Germans let themselves be drawn into a risky amphibious operation against a country Hitler had never wanted as an enemy, every day the potential threat from his greatest ideological opponent would be growing stronger. (It was just ironic that he was not yet at war with this perceived enemy, since in August 1939 Germany and the Soviet Union had signed a Non-Aggression Pact.)
All this meant that, from Hitler's point of view, there was an alternative to invading Britain: he could invade the Soviet Union. Both Hitler and his military planners knew that Germany's best chance of victory was for the war in Europe to be finished swiftly.
Hubert Menzel was a major in the General Operations Department of the OKH (the Oberkommando des Heers, the Germanhead quarte Army rs), and for him the idea of invading the Soviet Union in 1941 had the smack of cold, clear logic to it: 'We knew that in two years' time, that is by the end of 1942, beginning of 1943, the English would be ready, the Americans would be ready, the Russians would be ready too, and then we would have to deal with all three of them at the same time.... We had to try to remove the greatest threat from the East.... At the time it seemed possible.'

"Reagan Allowed Himself to Imagine a World Without The Soviet Union" Q&A; with Novelist Thomas Mallon

"Because he was simpler than Nixon in some ways, more sentimental than Nixon, [Reagan] allowed himself to imagine a world without the Soviet Union. Which Nixon's mind—much more brilliant than Reagan's—couldn't quite bring himself to do," says Thomas Mallon, author of the new novel, Finale.
Mallon is a rare novelist who actually lives in Washington, D.C. and writes about politics and power. He spoke to Reason's Nick Gillespie about his phenomenal new novel Finale, which follows the adventures of a fictional National Security Council advisor making his way through the scandal-ridden final years of the Reagan administration.
Late 1986 brought America a host of new social ills: the crack epidemic, a surge in homelessness, and AIDS. The Reykjavik Summit between Reagan and Mikhail Gorbachev was dubbed a disaster and the Iran-Contra scandal was beginning to flare up. Through it all, President Reagan was becoming increasingly remote, prompting critics to wonder if the 75-year-old president's mind was slipping a few gears.
Enter Anders Little, obsessive and troubled, coming to terms with his homosexuality amid a staunchly conservative administration. Little makes his way through a Who's Who of the Washington power elite. Indeed, Mallon's capital city is a Fellini-esque carnival of ambition back-biting, featuring an up-and-coming Christopher Hitchens; the always-calculating Pamela Harriman, the dowager queen of the Democratic Party's government in exile; Republican fundraiser Terry Dolan, who is dying of AIDs; and Nancy Reagan, ever protective of her husband's reputation during his last days in office. Even talk-show host Merv Griffin pops in to update the First Lady on the latest Hollywood gossip.
In a wide-ranging conversation, Mallon jumps from his novel of 1980s' glastnostalgia to discuss how our identities shape our deepest political convictions and vice versa. Mallon, like his protagonist Anders Little, is a gay conservative. Born in 1951, he says his belief in American exceptionalism is rooted in his Irish-Catholic upbringing on Long Island. "We considered ourselves super-Americans in a way, because we were militantly anti-communist. We were not squishily so like liberal protestants." He adds, "Belief in America was second only to belief in God."
The former literary editor of GQ and the widely praised author of a shelf of novels (including Dewey Defeats Truman and Watergate: a Novel) and nonfiction (Mrs. Paine's Garage and the Murder of John F. Kennedy, Stolen Words: Forays into the Origins and Ravages of Plagiarism), Mallon also explains why "95 percent of the writers" he knows are liberal Democrats (and why that bothers him), how social media and memoir are killing the novel, and why he's disappointed in writers such as Jonathan Franzen.
About 40 minutes.
Produced by Todd Krainin. Interview by Nick Gillespie. Cameras by Josh Swain and Krainin.

By 1947, the United States placed as a high priority the revival of the German economy, an approach opposed by the Soviet Union. Your trip to Moscow, Russia is bound to be a special one. From the multicolored spires of St. Basil’s Cathedral to the sturdy red walls of the Kremlin, there is much to see and do in this stunning city.
Named after the Moskva River—which flows through the city—Moscow has long been at the forefront of the creative world. Tour Moscow to follow in the footsteps of Tolstoy and Chekhov, among others, and join in the sense of pride Russia feels for its literary tradition. Moscow has named a number of its parks and open spaces after its poets and authors, so take a break at the fountain in Pushkin Square, or rest beneath the leafy trees in Gorky Park. When you’ve gotten your fill of literary splendor, head to the Memorial Museum of Cosmonauts, where you can learn about the Soviet Union’s efforts to reach the stars and the epic space race that lasted from 1955 to 1972.
Moscow is a city of creativity and innovation, but is also very much aware of its own history; as such, a haunting part of any Moscow sightseeing is a visit to the Fallen Monument Park. After the fall of the Soviet Union, countless statues and monuments were removed from their pedestals and moved to this park. Over the years, more modern artwork and sculptures have been added, turning the park into a strange, yet peaceful graveyard of former icons.

A Travel Guide to Uzbekistan
If Kyrgyzstan is renowned for its natural beauty, so neighbouring Uzbekistan is famous for its spectacular Silk Road architecture. From Samarkand to Khiva the legacy of the Silk Road and the rule of Emperor Timur is evident in the magnificent mosques, madrassas and caravanserais. My names is Jonny Bealby, I run Wild Frontiers, and in this short film I am going to explain about tourism in Uzbekistan.
As the world’s only landlocked country, surrounded by landlocked countries, Uzbekistan needs things other than traditional beaches to attract the visitor; and it does, in abundance. From Iran to India Islam has given the world some of the most spectacular architecture there is, and nowhere is this more evident than here in Uzbekistan.
The mosques and madrassas of Samarkand are as exquisite as any buildings anywhere on earth. The old walled town of Khiva, a veritable living museum, is an entire town of imposing buildings echoing history, and in Bukhara – probably the most important of all Silk Road towns – the soft, earth-coloured forts, squares, domes and towers are all guaranteed to carry the visitor back to a very different time.
The capital of Uzbekistan is Tashkent. Formerly the Soviet Union’s fifth largest city, Tashkent is a surprisingly quiet place, with large leafy parks, cafes and some excellent hotel options. But Tashkent is usually only a start or end point on a journey through Uzbekistan. And if you’re travelling overland from Kyrgyzstan and the Ferghana Valley you’ll likely as not first visit Kokand, a former royal khanate, or kingdom, and home to an impressive palace.
But according to Robert Byron, author of The Road to Oxiana, all travellers that venture through Central Asia have one goal in mind, to see the splendours of Samarkand.
Centre of the Universe, Mirror of the world, Garden of the soul, Jewel of the east, Pearl of Islam, Samarkand has had writers and poets waxing lyrical for over two millennia. And for god reason. The Registan, a public square used to hear royal proclamations, is surrounded on three sides by magnificent mosques and madrassas. The huge Bibi Khanym mosques was the largest in the world when built at the end of the 14th century. Emperor Timor’s tomb has exquisite carvings and delicate gold inlay. Ulam Beg’s observatory is fascinating and impressive. And the shar-i-zindar, also known as the street of the dead, is another atmospheric site.
Moving along the Royal Road, perhaps travelling through Shakrizabs and the birth place of Timur, you’ll come to Bukhara. Personally my favourite town in the country, if not the whole region, Bukhara is a sleepy place, easy to walk around and just brimming over with magnificent sites. Probably the most famous is the 150-foot high Kolan minaret, allegedly used in the 19th century by the then ruler, Nazarullah Khan, as a means of execution, and the adjacent mosques and madrassas. Other sites include the Arc, or impregnable citadel, the char minar mosque and the mosque of 40 pillars. Here in Bukhara there is also great shopping, often in the old caravanserais, where carpets, shawls, spice and trinkets of all types can be found.
And finally after another 7 hour drive across the Kyzyl Kum Desert lies Khiva. As one of the most powerful khanates in the 19th century, Khiva grew into a sumptuous walled city much of which has been lovingly restored for the benefit of today’s modern visitor. To watch sunrise over the old town is one of travel’s great experiences.
But it’s not all about ancient monuments. Uzbekistan has some beautiful hills and mountains, the quite extraordinary and fascinating Aral Sea and the famous modern art collection at Nukus. The ancient towns through which you’ll pass also have bustling markets, some great open air restaurants, and some of the best boutique hotels anyway in the region.
Although you might find more tourists here than you will in some of the neighbouring countries, for anyone interested in culture and history Uzbekistan is simply a must.

North Korea lies somewhere between a 1930′s Soviet Union frozen in time and a dark, futuristic vision of society... as imagined back in the 70′s.
"Land of Whispers" invites you to visit arguably the most unique and isolated travel destination in the world - not to criticize, but to observe and listen. Aside from usual highlights such as Pyongyang or Arirang, this unique one-man documentary brings you to areas such as Chongjin or Wonson, still virtually unknown to even google or wikipedia. There, I attempt to pierce through the ever-present 'national mythology' and as much as possible, I try to connect with people - such as the waitress mesmerized by tablet computers, or a tour guide cautiously fascinated by modern pop culture.

Latvia Adventure Travel: If you're yearning to hit Europe's untrodden jackpot, cash in your chips in Latvia (Latvija). Still undiscovered by the tourism masses, this sizzling Baltic sexpot is poised to become the continent's next A-list star. A country in transition, hellbent on shedding its stalwart old-Soviet image, the Latvia of today is vibrant, enigmatic and altogether mesmerising. Refreshingly unpretentious, Latvia manages to tantalise even the most jaded traveller. Many arrive expecting little and leave overwhelmed, certain they've uncovered long-buried treasure.
Latvian amber was known in places as far away as Ancient Greece and the Roman Empire. In the 12th century, German traders arrived, bringing with them missionaries who attempted to convert the pagan Finno-Ugric and Baltic tribes to the Christian faith. The Germans founded Rīga in 1201, establishing it as the largest and most powerful city on the eastern coast of the Baltic Sea. After independence in 1918, Latvia achieved considerable results in social development, economy, industry and agriculture. It has always been a multicultural melting point, where foreigners and locals worked together and brought prosperity to the country. On June 16, 1940, Vyacheslav Molotov presented the Latvian representative in Moscow with an ultimatum accusing Latvia of violations of that pact, and on June 17 Soviet forces occupied the country. Elections for a "People's Saeima" were held, and a puppet government headed by Augusts Kirhenšteins led Latvia into the USSR. The annexation was formalized on August 5, 1940. During the time of the Iron Curtain, Latvia was a province of the Soviet Union, but the concentration of heavy industry was enormous. Contacts with the West were regulated. The Baltic region had the reputation of being the most urbanized and having the highest literacy rate in the Soviet Union. Latvia gained independence on September 6, 1991. Between 1991 and 2007 the country saw unprecedented economic growth. However, the global recession and the banking crisis hit Latvia brutally, and severe economic contraction and destructively high unemployment have returned.
Because of a tribal past and divisions between occupying nations, there are regional differences between parts of Latvia which are interesting to explore.

Travel video about destination Aswan in Egypt.
From a distance Aswan appears to be a small, rather idyllic and sleepy city but around two hundred and eighty thousand people live on Egypt’s southern border. It is impossible not to be captivated by the pulsating life of the mysterious and strange streets of Aswan. Even today the colourful displays of goods in the souks are dominated by the historical South African caravan trade. The city is well known for its traditional bazaars. Depending on the time of day, everyday life is relatively calm and interrupted only by the hectic hustle and bustle of the traders. Aswan is synonymous with immense dams. In 1902 the first dam on the Nile was completed by the British. The Soviet Union sponsored the construction of an even larger dam. In 1971 the Sadd El-Ali Dam transformed the appearance of the Nile forever.

CUBA WORLD TRAVEL GUIDE Discovery Tourism Vacation
Cuba is an island country in the Caribbean. The nation of Cuba comprises the main island of Cuba, the Isla de la Juventud and several archipelagos. Havana is the capital of Cuba and its largest city. The second-largest city is Santiago de Cuba. To the north of Cuba lies the United States (150 km (93 mi) away), the Bahamas and the Turks and Caicos Islands are to the northeast, Mexico is to the west (210 km (130 mi) away), the Cayman Islands and Jamaica are to the south and Haiti and the Dominican Republic are to the southeast.
The island of Cuba was inhabited by numerous Amerindian tribes prior to the landing of explorer Christopher Columbus in 1492, who claimed it for the Kingdom of Spain. Cuba remained a colony of Spain until the Spanish–American War of 1898, after which it gained nominal independence as a de facto U.S. protectorate in 1902. The fragile republic endured increasingly radical politics and social strife, and despite efforts to strengthen its democratic system, Cuba came under the dictatorship of former president Fulgencio Batista in 1952. Growing unrest and instability led to Batista's ousting in January 1959 by the July 26 movement, which afterwards established a government under the leadership of Fidel Castro. Since 1965 the country has been governed as a single-party state by the Communist Party.
Cuba is the largest island in the Caribbean, and with over 11 million inhabitants, is the second-most populous after Hispaniola, albeit with a much lower population density for the region. It is a multiethnic country whose people, culture and customs derive from diverse origins, including the aboriginal Taíno and Ciboney peoples, the long period of Spanish colonialism, the introduction of African slaves, and a close relationship with the Soviet Union during the Cold War.
Cuba today is the only remaining Marxist-Leninist state to receive a "very high" human development ranking from the United Nations, and ranks well in measures of health and education.

Well hello and welcome to Warszawa. This week we are exploring the Polish capital. We've already been here a few days and it has been amazing. It has been such a pleasant surprise and unlike any part of Europe we've traveled in so far. So yeah, this week we're going to be highlighting 25 things to do around the city and we're excited to show you what it is all about.

Warsaw is quickly rising through the ranks and we think it won't be long before travellers are flocking en masse. So if you're planning a trip to Poland, don't skip over the capital because there is more to Warsaw than meets the eye.

Moscow is situated on the Moskva River in the Central Federal District of European Russia making it the world's most populated inland city. The city is well known for its unique architecture which consists of many different historic buildings such as Saint Basil's Cathedral with its brightly colored domes. With over 40 percent of its territory covered by greenery, it is one of the greenest capitals and major cities in Europe and the world, having the largest forest in an urban area within its borders—more than any other major city—even before its expansion in 2012. In the course of its history the city has served as the capital of a progression of states, from the medieval Grand Duchy of Moscow and the subsequent Tsardom of Russia to the Soviet Union. Moscow is considered the center of Russian culture, having served as the home of prestigious Russian artists, scientists and sports figures during the course of its history and because of the presence of many different museums, academic and political institutions and theaters. Moscow is also the seat of power of the Government of Russia, being the site of the Moscow Kremlin, a medieval city-fortress that is today the residence of the Russian president. The Moscow Kremlin and the Red Square are also one of several World Heritage Sites in the city. Both chambers of the Russian parliament (the State Duma and the Federation Council) also sit in the city.

In this brief video you can find seven little known facts about Georgia. The capital of Georgia is Tblisi, a wonderful blend of old and new architecture. But where is Georgia? Some say it’s in Asia, but most consider it a part of Europe.
More information about the video content bellow:
1. Spoken Georgian (kartvelian) is like no other language you are likely to hear. It belongs to its own ancient linguistic group unlike any other language spoken outside the region. It includes rare sounds that many visitors may never have heard before. Georgian has its own 33-letter alphabet thought to be based on the sort of Aramaic spoken in the time of Jesus. To the untutored eye, the letters look very much alike. But even without understanding it, Georgian writing is beautiful, a myriad of theatrical swirls and flourishes.
2. Take a look at a map and you'll find the former Soviet republic 1,000km east of the Bosphorus, marooned in Asia. One definition of Europe marks the Caucasus Mountains as its border, putting Georgia firmly in Asia. Other definitions place the whole Caucasus region, including Georgia, in Europe which is where most Georgians feel it belongs.
3. Georgia isn't called Georgia by Georgians. They call their country Sakartvelo. One theory suggests that the origins of the country's name come from the Middle Ages when Christian crusaders swept through the region on their way to the Holy Land. At that time, it was part of the Persian Empire and the people here were known as "Gurj". They were also devotees of St George.
4. The little streets of Tbilisi makes you forget about Paris or Venice! Cute little alleys and streets all over the city. It definitely has its charm and you could almost say Tbilisi is the Paris of Eurasia.
5. Ever heard of Ioseb Besarionis dze Jughashvili? Born in Gori, he became one of the most important rulers in the history of mankind. After becoming the leader of the Soviet Union, he ordered the imprisonment and execution of millions, starved Ukrainians to submission, lead his country to victory in WW2 and brought most of eastern Europe under the control of Moscow. You may know him by his Russian name: Joseph Stalin.
6. Georgia contains 2 de facto independent regions, Abkhazia and South Ossetia, which gained limited international recognition after the 2008 Russo-Georgian War. Georgia and a major part of the international community consider the regions to be part of Georgia's sovereign territory under Russian military occupation.
7. Georgia launched a large-scale military operation against South Ossetia during the night of 7–8 August 2008 to "restore constitutional order" in the region. 11,000 soldiers took part in the general Georgian offensive. Russia officially sent troops across the border, claiming to be defending both peacekeepers and South Ossetian civilians. In 5 days of fighting, the Russian forces pushed back Georgian troops and largely destroyed Georgia’s military infrastructure. Russia recognised Abkhazia and South Ossetia on 26 August 2008. In response, the Georgian government cut diplomatic relations with Russia.

By 1947, the United States placed as a high priority the revival of the German economy, an approach opposed by the Soviet Union. After the introduction of a Deutsche Mark the Soviet Union began to allow increasingly stringent checks on passenger and cargo flows travelling to the French, British and American sectors of Berlin, located in the heart of East Germany. This ultimately led to a blockade on all rail and road transport linking West Berlin, but an extensive airlift operation (Operation Vittles) allowed the city to survive. The Communists were however successful in staging a putsch in the Berlin municipal government, eventually leading to the divisions of both Berlin and Germany. Interviewees include Gail Halvorsen, Sir Freddie Laker and Clark Clifford.

Take a trip to the heart of Russia! With the help of RT's correspondent Sophie Shevardnadze, you'll see parts of the Moscow Kremlin hidden from public view; learn what the favourite dish of the Russian president is; meet the best young man of Russia; and hear the oldest chimes!
The Moscow Kremlin (Russian: Моско́вский Кремль, tr. Moskovskiy Kreml; IPA: [mɐˈskofskʲɪj krʲɛmlʲ]), usually referred to as the Kremlin, is a historic fortified complex at the heart of Moscow, overlooking the Moskva River to the south, Saint Basil's Cathedral and Red Square to the east, and the Alexander Garden to the west. It is the best known of the kremlins (Russian citadels) and includes five palaces, four cathedrals, and the enclosing Kremlin Wall with Kremlin towers. The complex serves as the official residence of the President of the Russian Federation.
The name Kremlin means "fortress inside a city",[1] and is often used as a metonym to refer to the government of the Russian Federation in a similar sense to how the White House is used to refer to the Executive Office of the President of the United States. Indeed, even the Russian president's official website is www.kreml.ru. It had previously been used to refer to the government of the Soviet Union (1922–1991) and its highest members (such as general secretaries, premiers, presidents, ministers, and commissars). "Kremlinology" refers to the study of Soviet and Russian politics.

This silent WWII newsreel, created for the home market in Germany, shows German aircraft and submarines attacking an Allied convoy in the North Sea. Attacks such as these on the convoy line to Murmansk were extremely costly for the Allies.
The Arctic convoys of World War II were oceangoing convoys which sailed from the United Kingdom, Iceland, and North America to northern ports in the Soviet Union - primarily Arkhangelsk (Archangel) and Murmansk, both in modern-day Russia. Although there were two gaps with no sailings between July and September 1942, and March and November 1943, there were 78 convoys between August 1941 and May 1945, sailing via several seas of the Atlantic and Arctic oceans.
About 1400 merchant ships delivered essential supplies to the Soviet Union under the Lend-Lease program, escorted by ships of the Royal Navy, Royal Canadian Navy, and the U.S. Navy. Eighty-five merchant vessels and 16 Royal Navy warships (two cruisers, six destroyers, eight other escort ships) were lost. Nazi Germany's Kriegsmarine lost a number of vessels including one battleship, three destroyers and at least 30 U-boats as well as a large number of aircraft. The convoys demonstrated the Allies commitment to helping the Soviet Union, prior to the opening of a Second Front, and tied up a substantial part of Germany's Navy and Air Force.
This film is seized enemy property, made originally for propaganda purposes by the Nazi government of Germany, and held by the United States Alien Property Custodian after WWII. The Uruguay Round Agreements Act between Germany and the United States prevents films previously under the administration of the Alien Property Custodian from being copyright renewed, and therefore these films are considered in the public domain in the United States of America.

Josef Stalin exercised supreme power in the Soviet Union from 1929 until his death in 1953. During that quarter-century, by Oleg Khlevniuk’s estimate, he caused the imprisonment and execution of no fewer than a million Soviet citizens per year. Millions more were victims of famine directly resulting from Stalin's policies. What drove him toward such ruthlessness? This essential biography, by the author most deeply familiar with the vast archives of the Soviet era, offers an unprecedented, fine-grained portrait of Stalin the man and dictator. Without mythologizing Stalin as either benevolent or an evil genius, Khlevniuk resolves numerous controversies about specific events in the dictator’s life while assembling many hundreds of previously unknown letters, memos, reports, and diaries into a comprehensive, compelling narrative of a life that altered the course of world history. In brief, revealing prologues to each chapter, Khlevniuk takes his reader into Stalin’s favorite dacha, where the innermost circle of Soviet leadership gathered as their vozhd lay dying. Chronological chapters then illuminate major themes: Stalin’s childhood, his involvement in the Revolution and the early Bolshevik government under Lenin, his assumption of undivided power and mandate for industrialization and collectivization, the Terror, World War II, and the postwar period. At the book’s conclusion, the author presents a cogent warning against nostalgia for the Stalinist era.

Author: Oleg V. Khlevniuk
Publish: 2015-05-19

President Vladimir Putin said 5,000 to 7,000 people from Russia and states of the former Soviet Union have joined the ranks of Islamic State.
Those who’ve left to fight for Islamic State “can’t be allowed to apply later on at home the experience they are gaining today in Syria,” Putin told a Commonwealth of Independent States summit of ex-Soviet republics in Astana, Kazakhstan, on Friday. Russia considered it a “duty to take concrete action in the fight against the so-called Islamic State and other radical groups in Syria.”
Russia is in talks with Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, Jordan, Israel and other countries about its campaign of air strikes in support of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad that began Sept. 30, Putin said. It is also trying to “establish cooperation” with the U.S. and Turkey, while CIS states should provide for an effective regional center to coordinate the fight against extremism

Where the east border of the former Soviet Union meets the ancient Silk Road is a modern trading post of ideas. The American University of Central Asia (AUCA) in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan reopened its doors this September at a ground up new campus. The architecture inspired by local nomadic traditions of mobility and hospitality provides for an American style liberal arts education to boost the democratic transformation of an entire region. As such the design’s trio of highly visible, flexible and dense spaces serve to promote participation, collaboration and interaction, key ingredients for learning.
Students come to campus like nomads with iPads, freely diving and settling into the many grand and cozy spaces. The 180,000 square foot academic building is an airy structure of 60 classrooms mixed within a tapestry of meeting, study, office, dining and gym spaces on eight interconnected levels. Its weave of transparent and industrial strength spaces invites students and faculty to participate in planned gatherings, engage in chanced encounters, and to discover new ways to collaborate.

60 Years of The U-2, by A1C Benjamin Bugeni.
For 60 years the U-2 has been flying high (70,000 feet to be exact). Here's a look at some of the interesting facts about the U-2 and what makes it so unique. This clip contains images protected by US copyrights.
After World War II, the U.S. military desired better strategic aerial reconnaissance to help determine Soviet capabilities and intentions. Into the 1950s, the best intelligence the American government had on the interior of the Soviet Union were German Luftwaffe photographs taken during the war of territory west of the Ural Mountains, so overflights to take aerial photographs of the Soviet Union began. After 1950, Soviet air defenses aggressively attacked all aircraft near its borders—sometimes even those over Japanese airspace—and the existing reconnaissance aircraft, primarily bombers converted for reconnaissance duty such as the Boeing RB-47, were vulnerable to anti-aircraft artillery, missiles, and fighters. Richard Leghorn of the USAF suggested that an aircraft that could fly at 60,000 feet (18,300 m) should be safe from the MiG-17, the Soviet Union's best interceptor, which could barely reach 45,000 feet (13,700 m). He and others believed that Soviet radar, which used American equipment provided during the war, could not track aircraft above 65,000 feet.[2]
The highest-flying aircraft available to America and its allies at the time was the English Electric Canberra, which could reach 48,000 feet (14,600 m). The British had already produced the PR3 photo-reconnaissance variant, but the USAF asked for English Electric's help to further modify the Martin B-57—the American licensed version of the Canberra—with long, narrow wings, new engines, and a lighter-than-normal airframe to reach 67,000 feet (20,400 m). Air Research and Development Command mandated design changes that made the aircraft more durable for combat, but the resulting RB-57D aircraft of 1955 could only reach 64,000 feet. The Soviet Union, unlike the United States and Britain, had also improved radar technology after the war, and could track aircraft above 65,000 feet.[3]

An examination of political, social and cultural developments in the Soviet Union. The book identifies the social tensions and political inconsistencies that spurred radical change in the government of Russia, from the turn of the century to the revolution of 1917. Kenez envisions that revolution as a crisis of authority that posed the question, 'Who shall govern Russia?' This question was resolved with the creation of the Soviet Union. Kenez traces the development of the Soviet Union from the Revolution, through the 1920s, the years of the New Economic Policies and into the Stalinist order. He shows how post-Stalin Soviet leaders struggled to find ways to rule the country without using Stalin's methods but also without openly repudiating the past, and to negotiate a peaceful but antipathetic coexistence with the capitalist West. In this second edition, he also examines the post-Soviet period, tracing Russia's development up to the time of publication.

"The Battle of Russia," Chapter V of Frank Capra's "Why We Fight"
series, follows the beginning of the end for Adolph Hitler. Part One
shows how the Nazi regime, frustrated by the tenacity of British
resistance, sets its sights on the Soviet Union instead. As it follows
the Nazi march into Russian territory, the film provides a brief summary
of the attempts of foreign powers to invade Russia over the past seven
hundred years. It explains why the country is such a hot prize and why
no army in history ever succeeded in conquering it. Hitler is portrayed
as a fool, his hubris blinding him to the evidence of history. The
film illustrates how the Red Army's method of fighting -- a
scorched-earth strategy and a reliance on guerilla and urban warfare --
was bound to defeat the Nazis as it had defeated every invader before
them. Capra's favorable portrait of the Russians is notable. Released
two years before the start of the Cold War, the film portrays the
Soviets as a diverse and freedom-loving people, in many ways similar to
their then-allies, the people of the United States.

VAZ 2121 LADA 4x4 off-road SUVs Soviet Union and Russia in the game SpinTires 2015. Now I decided to make a series of test drives and reviews the Soviet SUVs. Probably many of you do not know these cars USSR and Ross's, but most know what they are capable off-road and in the dirt. In the new releases rented SUVs Lada (VAZ) and UAZ. Looking at the front, I will tell you that the cars proved to be great on a swampy road, were well-run and off-road none of the SUV is not stuck. Tried as always to call in rivers and lakes. Test drive SUV (cars) rented the game SpinTires 2015 - off-road simulator. In this game, you can experience a variety of trucks and cars from around the world. Happy viewing.
