One of the very foundations of political science is the principle that geography determines destiny. In the same way that the British Isles determined the naval culture, and the frontier affected the American culture, Russia too, can be defined by its geographic characteristics. The most obvious element of Russia's geography is its enormous size. However, the truth is that Russia's size is both an advantage as well as a liability. The very core of the Russian Federation, the Moscow region, is simply indefensible. There are no mountainous ranges; no rivers or oceans, there are no swamps or deserts. Only the forests of Moscow and the inhospitable climate can be defined as geographic obstacles. The only thing the Russians can do in event of an invasion is to drag out the war and bleed the enemy out. It is for this reason that Russia's history is largely about surviving invasion after invasion. These centuries long experiences left a deep mark in the Russian culture and psychology, and due to these experiences the Russian leadership became obsessed with security and survival.

Rusky Ed here with a challenge. Can you list the five largest cities in Russia? See how many you can come up before the end of the intro song, after which we'll get to the lesson!
Most people are likely to realize that Moscow is the largest city in Russia. In fact, it has a population of about fifteen million people, making it about the same size as Los Angeles. The second largest city in Russia is Saint Petersburg and it has a population of about five million. The next three largest cities all have a population of over a million people and they are:
Novosibirsk, Yekaterinburg, and Nizhny Novgorod. Other cities that you might have thought of include: Vladivostok, Irkutsk, Omsk, Volgograd, and Sochi, to name just a few.
We begin this lesson with a blank map of Russia which looks a little something like this. As you can see, no cities, no geographical features, and not much information at all actually is shown on the map. All we see is the basic outline of a country which stretches from the Pacific Ocean to Europe. In terms of land area Russia is the largest country in the world. However, in terms of population it is only the ninth largest country. So, Russia has a lot of land, but a relatively low population density.
In this lesson we will place six items on our blank map. Listed in Russian these items include:
1. Москва (Moscow)
2. Новосибирск (Novosibirsk)
3. Владивосток (Vladivostok)
4. Уральские горы (Ural Mountains)
5. Тихий океан (Pacific Ocean)
6. Озеро Байкал (Lake Baikal)
And here are these places on the map. From west to east we see Moscow, the Ural Range, Novosibirsk, Lake Baikal, Vladivostok, and the Pacific Ocean in English and Москва, Уральские горы, Новосибирск, Озеро Байкал, Владивосток, and Тихий океан in Russian.
As already mentioned Moscow is the largest city in Russia, but it is also interesting to point out that Lake Baikal is the largest freshwater lake on the planet and that it contains one-fifth of the world's fresh water. Further, although for the most part the English and Russian forms of the names for these places sound similar, that is not the case for the Pacific Ocean and Тихий океан, oddly enough.
And now for two sample sentences:
First up we have,
Владивосток расположен на восточном побережье России.
(Vladivostok is located on the east coast of Russia.)
Key words in this sentence include:
расположение - location, placement, arrangement
восточный - east, eastern
побережье - coast, shore, seaboard
With these definitions in mind and using the proper grammatical forms of these words, we can see that:
Владивосток расположен на восточном побережье России.
(Vladivostok is located on the east coast of Russia.)
The next sentence goes like this:
Мы посетили Уральские горы в течение недели.
(We visited the Ural Mountains for a week.)
First of all, it should be noted that while the word mountains is capitalized in English when we write Ural Mountains, the word горы is not capitalized in Russian when we write Уральские горы. Also of special interest are the words:
посетить - to visit
течение - current, flow
в течение - through the course of
неделя - week
Keeping these definitions in mind and using the appropriate forms of these words, it is apparent that:
Мы посетили Уральские горы в течение недели.
(We visited the Ural Mountains for a week.)
By way of quick review, here are a few words and a couple sentences:
1. ещё (more)
2. вопрос (question)
3. один (one)
4. яблоко (apple)
5. красный (red)
6. большой (big)
And now for the sentences:
У меня ещё один вопрос. (I have one more question.)
У меня большая красное яблоко. (I have a big red apple.)

Geographically, the peninsula is generally divided into three zones: steppes, mountains and southern coast.

The southeast coast is flanked at a distance of 8--12 kilometres (5.0--7.5 mi) from the sea by a parallel range of mountains, the Crimean Mountains.[71] These mountains are backed by secondary parallel ranges. Seventy-five percent of the remaining area of Crimea consists of semiarid prairie lands, a southward continuation of the Pontic steppes, which slope gently to the northwest from the foot of the Crimean Mountains. The main range of these mountains shoots up with extraordinary abruptness from the deep floor of the Black Sea to an altitude of 600--750 metres (1,969--2,461 ft), beginning at the southwest point of the peninsula, called c. It was believed that this cape was supposedly crowned with the temple of Artemis, where Iphigeneia is said to have officiated as priestess.[72] Uchan-su waterfall on the south slope of the mountains is the highest in Ukraine.
Numerous kurgans, or burial mounds, of the ancient Scythians are scattered across the Crimean steppes.
The Crimean Mountains near the city of Alushta
The terrain that lies beyond the sheltering Crimean Mountain range is of an altogether different character. Here, the narrow strip of coast and the slopes of the mountains are smothered with greenery. This "riviera" stretches along the southeast coast from capes Fiolente and Aya, in the south, to Feodosiya, and is studded with summer sea-bathing resorts such as Alupka, Yalta, Gurzuf, Alushta, Sudak, and Feodosiya. During the years of Soviet rule, the resorts and dachas of this coast served as the prime perquisites of the politically loyal.[citation needed]why here? and ref? In addition, vineyards and fruit orchards are located in the region. Fishing, mining, and the production of essential oils are also important. Numerous Crimean Tatar villages, mosques, monasteries, and palaces of the Russian imperial family and nobles are found here, as well as picturesque ancient Greek and medieval castles.
Crimea is subdivided into 25 regions: 14 raions (districts) and 11 city municipalities, officially known as territories governed by city councils.[70] While the City of Sevastopol is located on the Crimean peninsula, it is administratively separate from the rest of Crimea and is one of two special municipalities of Ukraine. Sevastopol, while having a separate administration, is tightly integrated within the infrastructure of the whole peninsula.

As you can imagine, there were a few bumps along the road. It turns out, our old friends the Mongols had quite a lot to do with unifying Russia. The Chernobyl disaster (Ukrainian: Чорнобильська катастрофа, Chornobylska Katastrofa -- Chornobyl Catastrophe) was a catastrophic nuclear accident that occurred on 26 April 1986 at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in Ukraine (then officially Ukrainian SSR), which was under the direct jurisdiction of the central authorities of the Soviet Union. An explosion and fire released large quantities of radioactive particles into the atmosphere, which spread over much of Western USSR and Europe.
The Chernobyl disaster is widely considered to have been the worst nuclear power plant accident in history, and is one of only two classified as a level 7 event on the International Nuclear Event Scale (the other being the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster in 2011). The battle to contain the contamination and avert a greater catastrophe ultimately involved over 500,000 workers and cost an estimated 18 billion rubles. The official Soviet casualty count of 31 deaths has been disputed, and long-term effects such as cancers and deformities are still being accounted for.

Rusky Ed here with a lesson pertaining to administrative units. More on that after the intro song!
Administrivia can be a rather dull and tedious topic, but that's not what we're talking about in this lesson. However, administrative units will be briefly mentioned, but for now let's just take a look at some cities in Russia!
First up we have...
Volgograd (Волгоград) and Volgograd is a large city with a population of slightly over one million and it iis the administrative center of the Volgograd Oblast (Волгоградская область). Incidentally, Volgograd was formerly known as Stalingrad (Сталинград).
Next on our list of cities we have...
Perm (Пермь) which is a large city with a population of just under one million and the administrative center of the Perm Krai (Пермский край).
Third on the list is...
Omsk (Омск) which just so happens to be the seventh largest city in Russia and the administrative center of the Omsk Oblast (Омская область).
Moving along we have...
Ulan-Ude (Улан-Удэ) and Ulan-Ude is located east of Lake Baikal and is the capital city of the Buryatia Republic (Республика Бурятия).
Occupying the fifth spot on the list is...
Magadan (Магадан) and the fine city of Magadan is located in northeastern Russia and it is administrative center of the Magadan Oblast (Магадан область)
And finally we have...
Uelen (Уэлен) which happens to be a small town of only 700, located just south of the Arctic Circle in northeastern Russia and officially recognized as the closest permanent Russian settlement to the United States. It is contained within the Chukotka Autonomous Okrug (Чукотский автономный округ), also known simply as Chukotka (Чукотка).
So, you might ask what are all these oblasts, krais, republics, and okrugs? Well, they're sort of like states. Whereas the United States is divided into administrative units known as states, Russia is divided into administrative units known as oblasts, krais, republics, and okrugs. The relationship between these various entities is a matter which merits further discussion, but now is not the time for that. However, it should be noted that due to the large number of administrative units in Russia, they have been divided into nine separate regions as seen on this map, which includes the Crimean Federal District which was recently added in March of 2014.
Before moving on to the review words and sentences, we have a couple sentences featuring a couple of the cities just discussed:
First we have:
Омск является седьмым по величине городом в России.
Омск - седьмой по величине город России.
(Omsk is the seventh largest city in Russia.)
And also we have:
Ранее Волгоград был известен как Сталинград.
(Formerly Volgograd was known as Stalingrad.)
or more commonly...
Раньше Волгоград называли Сталинград.
(Formerly Volgograd was called Stalingrad.)
And now for a few quick review words and sentences:
Using the following words:
предел - limit, margin, boundary, border
разумный - reasonable, rational, sensible
ожидание - expectation
We can put together the following sample sentence:
Её ожидания были в разумных пределах.
(Her expectations were within reason.)
Using this set of words:
позволить - to allow, to permit
сорняк - weed
заполнить - to fill
The following sample sentence can be constructed:
Она позволила сорнякам заполнить двор.
or alternately...
Она допустила чтобы зарос весь двор.
both mean...
(She allowed the weeds to fill the yard.)

In which John Green teaches you how Russia evolved from a loose amalgamation of medieval principalities known as the Kievan Rus into the thriving democracy we know today. As you can imagine, there were a few bumps along the road. It turns out, our old friends the Mongols had quite a lot to do with unifying Russia. In yet another example of how surprisingly organized nomadic raiders can be, the Mongols brought the Kievan Rus together under a single leadership, and concentrated power in Moscow. This set the stage for the various Ivans (the Great and the Terrible) to throw off the yoke and form a pan-Russian nation ruled by an autocratic leader. More than 500 years later, we still have autocratic leadership in Russia. All this, plus a rundown of some of our favorite atrocities of Ivan the Terrible, and a visit from Putin!

Curonian Spit - Lithuania Travel, Tours, Vacations HD
World Travel https://www.youtube.com/user/World1Tube
The Curonian Spit is a 98 km long, thin, curved sand-dune spit that separates the Curonian Lagoon from the Baltic Sea coast. Its southern portion lies within Kaliningrad Oblast, Russia and its northern within southwestern Lithuania. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site shared by the two countries.
Geography
The Curonian Spit stretches from the Sambian Peninsula on the south to its northern tip next to a narrow strait, across which is the port city of Klaipėda on the mainland of Lithuania. The northern 52 km long stretch of the Curonian Spit peninsula belongs to Lithuania, while the rest is part of the Kaliningrad Oblast, Russia (see the map). The width of the spit varies from a minimum of 400 m in Russia (near the village of Lesnoy) to a maximum of 3,800 m in Lithuania (just north of Nida).
Geologic history
The Curonian Spit was formed about 3rd millennium BC.[1] A glacial moraine served as its foundation; winds and sea currents later contributed enough sand to raise and keep the formation above sea level.
The existence of this narrow shoal is inherently threatened by the natural processes that govern coastal shoreline features.[2] It depends on a dynamic balance between sand transport and deposition. If (hypothetically) the source area to the south-west were cut off, say, by a large port construction with a pier, the Spit would erode and eventually disappear. It is thus a geologically speaking ephemeral coast element. The most likely development, however, is that the shallow bay inside the Spit will eventually fill up with sediment, thus creating new land.
Current state
The Curonian Spit is home to the highest moving (drifting) sand dunes in Europe. Their average height is 35 meters, but some attain the height of 60 meters. Several ecological communities are present on and near the Spit, from its outer beaches to dune ridges, wetlands, meadows, and forests.[4] Its location on the East Atlantic Flyway means it is frequently visited by migratory waterfowl. Between 10 and 20 million birds fly over the feature during spring and fall migrations, and many pause to rest or breed there.
The largest town on the spit is Nida in Lithuania, a popular holiday resort, mostly frequented by Lithuanian and German tourists. The northern shoreline of Curonian Spit is the site of beaches for tourists. Both the Russian and Lithuanian parts of the spit are national parks. The settlements of the Curonian Spit (from north to south) are:
Smiltynė
Alksnynė
Juodkrantė
Pervalka
Preila
Nida
Morskoe
Rybachy
Lesnoy
The first six are on the Lithuanian side, while the last three are on the Russian side. The Russian side of the Curonian Spit belongs to Zelenogradsky District of the Kaliningrad Oblast, while the Lithuanian side is partitioned among Klaipėda city municipality and Neringa municipality.
There is a single road that traverses the whole length of the Curonian Spit. In the Russian side it goes to Zelenogradsk, while on the Lithuanian side it goes to Smiltynė. The spit is not connected to mainland Lithuania. Car ferries provide a transportation link between Smiltynė, located on the spit, and the port town of Klaipėda.
Human history
According to Baltic mythology, the Curonian Spit was formed by a giantess, Neringa, who was playing on the seashore. This child also appears in other myths (in some of which she is shown as a young strong woman, similar to a female version of the Greek Heracles).
From ca. 800 to 1016, the Spit was the location of Kaup, a major pagan trading centre which has not been excavated yet. The Teutonic Knights occupied the area in the 13th century, building their castles at Memel (1252), Neuhausen (1283), and at Rossitten (1372). The Spit may have been the home of the last living speaker of a now-extinct Baltic language, Old Prussian.

The "Journey to the Edge of the Universe" documentary film broadcast on National Geographic and Discovery Channels. It documents a space journey from Earth to the edge of the universe itself. The US edition was narrated by Alec Baldwin, the UK edition by Sean Pertwee.
Using one single, unbroken shot, Journey to the Edge of the Universe explores what we would find if we were able to travel the entire length of our universe. Venturing past Neil Armstrong's footsteps still sealed on the moon, the special soars over brightly illuminated Venus onto Mercury, a small planet made almost entirely of iron that may perhaps be the left-over remnants of a much larger planet.
Mars is a planet of extremes: with tornadoes, volcanoes and canyons unlike anything seen on Earth while Jupiter's ever-present red storm is three times the size of Earth and has lasted for hundreds of years. Reaching the Saturn moon Titan, we find a landscape closely resembling Earth, but Titan's rivers, lakes and oceans are not made of water, but of liquid methane.
Could life exist here? Travelling more than 90 trillion kilometres from Earth, viewers step inside the Epsilon Eridani star system where spectacular rings of dust and ice resemble the formation of our own solar system 4.5 billion years ago. Even further out is star Gliese 581, about the same age as our sun with a planet that is just the right distance to possibly support life. Passing by the Pillars of Creation, viewers can see deep inside these clouds where huge stars being born, bringing light and perhaps even life to the universe.

Stockholm is the capital of Sweden and the largest city of Fennoscandia. Stockholm is located on Sweden's south-central east coast, where the freshwater Lake Mälaren - Sweden's third largest lake - flows out into the Baltic Sea. The central parts of the city consist of fourteen islands that are continuous with the Stockholm archipelago. The geographical city centre is situated on the water, in Riddarfjärden bay. Over 30% of the city area is made up of waterways and another 30% is made up of parks and green spaces.
The most important places to visit in Stockholm: Vasa Museum (this is Sweden's National Maritime Museum. On display is the famous Vasa ship, the only preserved 17th century ship of its kind), Stockholm Royal Palace (the official residence of the Swedish monarch. It's a former site of a 14th century fortress), Town Hall (a key landmark for the city of Sweden. More than eight million bricks were used to construct this beautiful building), Drottningholm Palace (a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This stunning architectural gem built in the 1600's is the private home of the Royal family) and many more.
This video offers a lot of tips to help you plan the perfect vacation. If you want to save time and money, the most important Stockholm travel tip is to compare prices before booking a hotel room or a flight. You can do this for free on http://bookinghunter.com, a site that searches through hundreds of other travel websites in real time for the best travel deals available.
