From a distance Aswan appears to be a small, rather idyllic and sleepy city but around two hundred and eighty thousand people live on Egypt’s southern border. It is impossible not to be captivated by the pulsating life of the mysterious and strange streets of Aswan. Even today the colourful displays of goods in the souks are dominated by the historical South African caravan trade. The city is well known for its traditional bazaars. Depending on the time of day, everyday life is relatively calm and interrupted only by the hectic hustle and bustle of the traders. Aswan is synonymous with immense dams. In 1902 the first dam on the Nile was completed by the British. The Soviet Union sponsored the construction of an even larger dam. In 1971 the Sadd El-Ali Dam transformed the appearance of the Nile forever.

Due to its remote location close to today’s Sudanese border in Southern Egypt, Abu Simbel was unknown until 1813 when only the heads of the temple’s colossal statues were visible above the sand. The breathtaking impression of its exterior also extends within where a magnificent hall with two rows of column-like statues leads into the depths of the temple.Abu Simbel is famous for its precise orientation toward the sun. Twice a year, the first rays of the morning sun shine down the entire length of the temple chamber and illuminate the rear wall of its innermost shrine. Various portrayals and descriptions of Egyptian gods can be found throughout, many of them portrayed with animal heads, such as hawks. Due to the construction of the Aswan High Dam, Abu Simbel has been relocated from its original position on the banks of the Nile. Thanks to an international effort by UNESCO, and at a cost of 42 million dollars, the surface of the hill and the inner chambers were sectioned and reconstructed 64m higher up the valley, inside a concrete dome. The smaller Hathor Temple, dedicated to the wife of Ramses II, Princess Nefertari, was also saved in this way. Today, the great temples of Abu Simbel rise once again in all their former glory.

The necropolis covers 25 km² and the graves of 64 kings, queens and those in High Office have been discovered there. With the exception of Amenophis, each of the pharaohs of the new realm was buried in the necropolis, as well as the legendary, Tutanchamun. Edfu with its tower, outer walls, buildings and halls is still in almost perfect condition and at its entrance royal falcons carved from granite stand guard. Its walls are an authentic history book of Egyptian myth and legend. The Egyptian gods are everywhere as impressive statues, fragile carvings and paintings. Kom Ombo is a temple complex for two deities, Horus the Falcon and Sobek the Crocodile. The mummified holy crocodiles are stored in a special chamber. Indeed, cemeteries have been discovered that contain thousands of mummified dogs, cats, baboons and crocodiles. While walking from chamber to chamber it’s like travelling back in time for thousands of years. The journey on the Nile leads to the archaeological excavation site of Philae, on the island of Agilika. This island, with its fantastic temple complexes, was once the pearl of Egypt. The stone witnesses on the river banks stand silently as the boat continues on its journey further into Egypt, an impressive country that has an amazing ancient history and a modern awareness of its glorious past.

The island's ruins indicate its former cosmopolitan nature with its Egyptian, Italian, Phoenician and Jewish traders but due to the destruction of its buildings and the creation of new centres of trade elsewhere, Delos gradually became deserted.

Aswan (
/ˌæsˈwɑːn /; Arabic: [ʔɑˈsˁwɑːn], Arabic: أسوان Aswān, Ancient Egyptian: Swenet, Coptic: ⲥⲟⲩⲁⲛ Swān, Ancient Greek: Συήνη Syene), formerly spelled Assuan, is a city in the south of Egypt, the capital of the Aswan Governorate.
Aswan is a busy market and tourist centre located just north of the Aswan Dams on the east bank of the Nile at the first cataract. The modern city has expanded and includes the formerly separate community on the island of Elephantine.
Aswan is the ancient city of Swenet, which in antiquity was the frontier town of Ancient Egypt facing the south. Swenet is supposed to have derived its name from an Egyptian goddess with the same name[citation needed]. This goddess later was identified as Eileithyia by the Greeks and Lucina by the Romans during their occupation of Ancient Egypt because of the similar association of their goddesses with childbirth, and of which the import is "the opener". The ancient name of the city also is said to be derived from the Egyptian symbol for trade.

Various portrayals and descriptions of Egyptian gods can be found throughout, many of them portrayed with animal heads, such as hawks. Due to the construction of the Aswan High Dam, Abu Simbel has been relocated from its original position on the banks of the Nile. Thanks to an international effort by UNESCO, and at a cost of 42 million dollars, the surface of the hill and the inner chambers were sectioned and reconstructed 64m higher up the valley, inside a concrete dome. The smaller Hathor Temple, dedicated to the wife of Ramses II, Princess Nefertari, was also saved in this way. Today, the great temples of Abu Simbel rise once again in all their former glory.

During ancient times the Cyclades island of Delos was the flourishing centre of Greek culture. Greece's most extensive archaeological site covers the entire island and since 1872 has been frequented by countless archaeologists. Greek legend has it that this now-deserted island was the birthplace of the gods Apollo and Artemis.Offering wonderful ocean views, the amphitheatre dates back to the third century B.C. and accommodated around 5500 spectators. Not all of the island's temples were dedicated to Greek gods and a particularly well-preserved sanctuary of the so-called 'foreign gods' formed part of a beautiful temple that was dedicated to the Egyptian goddess, Isis.The lower plateaus on the western side of Kithos Hill contain numerous important cult sites. One of these sanctuaries was the centre of the Hera Cult, the Archaic Heraion, that established itself in 500 B.C. Beautifully restored mosaics with the Phoenician symbol of the goddess Tanith decorate one of the most impressively furnished houses on the island, the House Of Dolphins. The island's ruins indicate its former cosmopolitan nature with its Egyptian, Italian, Phoenician and Jewish traders but due to the destruction of its buildings and the creation of new centres of trade elsewhere, Delos gradually became deserted.

Thanks to the intensive restoration and reconstruction work of recent years the buildings of the former Reception Hall provide a fascinating insight into the royal court of the Moors. The Salón of Abd Ar-Rahman The Third shines out once again in all of its ancient and glorious splendour. Soon after its completion the Mahdinat Al-Zahra was described as a ‘wonder of the western hemisphere’, a fairy-tale-like synthesis of the arts located upon the picturesque southern slopes of the Sierra Morena.

Today, the mummified remains of ancient Nile crocodiles are displayed within a chapel that was once dedicated to the goddess, Hathor. These great reptiles were worshipped as sacred animals. One half of the double temple belonged to the crocodile-headed deity, Sobek, the son of Hathor. Today’s Kom Ombo Temple was divided into two asymmetric parts by its Ptolemaic builders. Within the right section of the building, Sobek was worshipped, while the left half was dedicated to Haroeris. The external surrounding wall of the temple contains several strange pictures and reliefs including portrayals of early medical instruments. A kind of medicine cupboard was carved into the stone. It shows highly developed medical implements, among them a variety of surgical instruments and even forceps. The profession of doctor was popular and widespread throughout ancient Egypt. However, the Gods were also called upon as soon as there was illness as it was believed that medicine alone could not provide a cure. Images of numerous Egyptian rulers adorn the walls. Queen Cleopatra, the legendary last Ptolemaic sovereign, was also immortalized here. Outside the temple there is a “Birth House” next to the small Hathor Chapel. The Mammisi contains the remarkable portrayal of a nursing mother. During the Ptolemaic period each temple contained a Mammisi that was decorated with portrayals and hieroglyphs. Here, the birth of the children of the gods was celebrated. Due to the ancient relics and the double temple of Kom Ombo we have been able to gain an even greater understanding of Egypt’s fascinating past.

On the desert border between Luxor and Abydos is the impressive Hathor Temple of Dendera, one of ancient Egypt's most important cities. The Temple of Kom Ombo is an unusual double temple in the Egyptian town of Kom Ombo. It stands by the Nile just south of Gebel el-Silsila, between Aswan and Edfu.
The building is unique because its 'double' design meant that there were courts, sanctuaries and rooms duplicated for two sets of gods. The southern half of the temple was dedicated to the crocodile god Sobek, god of fertility. Meanwhile, the northern part of the temple was dedicated to the falcon god Horus the Elder.
The temple is a typical because everything is perfectly symmetrical along the main axis.
The outer enclosure wall is mud brick but the temple itself is built of local sandstone from the quarry at Gebel el-Silsila. The modern visitor enters by the gate on the eastern side of the outer enclosure wall.
Much of the temple has been destroyed by the Nile, earthquakes, and later builders who used its stones for other projects.
A few of the three-hundred crocodile mummies discovered in the vicinity are displayed in The Crocodile Museum.
