Cairo is Africa’s largest city and the heart of the Arab world, extreme poverty living next to opulent wealth, and modern, Western boutiques next to ancient souks. The Cairo Museum is home to the most extensive collection of Egyptian antiquities, including the golden mask and tomb of Tutankamun. Towering above almost any other human achievement are the impressive three pyramids of Gisa. The Cheops Pyramid, the world’s largest single construction, took four hundred thousand workers twenty years to build. It weighs as much as all the cathedrals in Europe put together and spans an area of 53,000 square metres - the height of a fifty storey skyscraper. In the middle of today’s modern city of Luxor, known as the ‘Capital City Of The Pharaohs’, the Luxor Temple stretches along the eastern banks of the Nile and, not far away, the temple complex of Karnak and the Amun Temple. 67 kilometres from Luxor, on the western bank of the Nile, lies the Temple Of Dendera, the most important place of worship for the love goddess, HATHOR, whose heavenly appearance was portrayed by the body of a cow. At Aswan, the landscape of the Nile is enchanting, but it is the stone temples of Abu Simbel that take one back to ancient Egypt, land of the Pharaohs, and archaeological paradise.

Travel video about destination Abu Simbel in Egypt.
Due to its remote location close to today’s Sudanese border in Southern Egypt, Abu Simbel was unknown until 1813 when only the heads of the temple’s colossal statues were visible above the sand. The breathtaking impression of its exterior also extends within where a magnificent hall with two rows of column-like statues leads into the depths of the temple.Abu Simbel is famous for its precise orientation toward the sun. Twice a year, the first rays of the morning sun shine down the entire length of the temple chamber and illuminate the rear wall of its innermost shrine. Various portrayals and descriptions of Egyptian gods can be found throughout, many of them portrayed with animal heads, such as hawks. Due to the construction of the Aswan High Dam, Abu Simbel has been relocated from its original position on the banks of the Nile. Thanks to an international effort by UNESCO, and at a cost of 42 million dollars, the surface of the hill and the inner chambers were sectioned and reconstructed 64m higher up the valley, inside a concrete dome. The smaller Hathor Temple, dedicated to the wife of Ramses II, Princess Nefertari, was also saved in this way. Today, the great temples of Abu Simbel rise once again in all their former glory.

Vietnam had its own share of wars, American and French conquerors and economic difficulties. So it is no wonder that the country appears only nowadays on the map of international tourism. More and more people are interested in the heritage of the 2700 years old country and its natural beauties. Beside the two large cities, Hanoi and Ho Shi Minh city, one can find the remnants of the imperial times and the beautiful pagodas in Hue. The ruins of My Son are similar to the ruins of the temples of Angkor. Beside the tribes living here, the mountains around Sapa are well known of the Silver Waterfall and the rice fields. The most well known sight of the country is the wild Bay of the Descending Dragon. The exotic Mekong delta is famous of the water city of My Tho, the canals, and the swimming market.

Travel video about destination Nile Cruise in Egypt.
A cruise on the Nile in the wake of the ancient Egyptians, an adventure into the world of the Pharaohs and the exploration of their mammoth culture. A three-kilometre avenue of sphinxes leads from Luxor to Karnak. Built during the reigns of Ramses the 2nd and Amenophis the 3rd, this impressive avenue was dedicated to three gods of Thebes. The façade of the 260 metre long temple is decorated with six huge statues of Ramses. At night, the temple complex has an air of mystique. and light casts ghostly shadows all around as fearsome monuments gaze into infinity. At its zenith, a million people inhabited Thebes. The necropolis covers 25 km² and the graves of 64 kings, queens and those in High Office have been discovered there. With the exception of Amenophis, each of the pharaohs of the new realm was buried in the necropolis, as well as the legendary, Tutanchamun. Edfu with its tower, outer walls, buildings and halls is still in almost perfect condition and at its entrance royal falcons carved from granite stand guard. Its walls are an authentic history book of Egyptian myth and legend. The Egyptian gods are everywhere as impressive statues, fragile carvings and paintings. Kom Ombo is a temple complex for two deities, Horus the Falcon and Sobek the Crocodile. The mummified holy crocodiles are stored in a special chamber. Indeed, cemeteries have been discovered that contain thousands of mummified dogs, cats, baboons and crocodiles. While walking from chamber to chamber it’s like travelling back in time for thousands of years. The journey on the Nile leads to the archaeological excavation site of Philae, on the island of Agilika. This island, with its fantastic temple complexes, was once the pearl of Egypt. The stone witnesses on the river banks stand silently as the boat continues on its journey further into Egypt, an impressive country that has an amazing ancient history and a modern awareness of its glorious past.

Travel video about destination Delos in Greece.
During ancient times the Cyclades island of Delos was the flourishing centre of Greek culture. Greece's most extensive archaeological site covers the entire island and since 1872 has been frequented by countless archaeologists. Greek legend has it that this now-deserted island was the birthplace of the gods Apollo and Artemis.Offering wonderful ocean views, the amphitheatre dates back to the third century B.C. and accommodated around 5500 spectators. Not all of the island's temples were dedicated to Greek gods and a particularly well-preserved sanctuary of the so-called 'foreign gods' formed part of a beautiful temple that was dedicated to the Egyptian goddess, Isis. The lower plateaus on the western side of Kithos Hill contain numerous important cult sites. One of these sanctuaries was the centre of the Hera Cult, the Archaic Heraion, that established itself in 500 B.C. Beautifully restored mosaics with the Phoenician symbol of the goddess Tanith decorate one of the most impressively furnished houses on the island, the House Of Dolphins. The island's ruins indicate its former cosmopolitan nature with its Egyptian, Italian, Phoenician and Jewish traders but due to the destruction of its buildings and the creation of new centres of trade elsewhere, Delos gradually became deserted.

The beautiful main facade of the Cathedral Santiago De Compostela rises proudly into the sky, the final destination of a legendary medieval pilgrimage route. For more than twelve hundred years the marvellous buildings of the old town, as well as the striking cathedral, have attracted visitors from all over the world. During the Middle Ages the town enjoyed great prominence. In addition to Jerusalem and Rome, Santiago De Compostela was the third most important Christian pilgrimage destination. Its beautiful main facade combines various decorative and architectural elements that are to be found along the pilgrims’ way, the Camino de Santiago. In addition to the imposing cathedral there are further treasures hidden within the historical centre of the town such as the 16th century Colegio De Fonseca. Under the rule of Bishop Diego Xelmírez both the town and its Catholic church enjoyed much prosperity and the diocese became an archbishopric. Unlike the architectural transformation of its external façade most of the cathedral’s interior has retained its original form. The church’s main nave and altar, with its precious and exquisite decoration, are a remarkable religious work of art. Vacation travel video about destination Skocjanske Jame in Slovenia.
In the heart of the Slovenian karst landscape of Kras, below the village of Škocjan, is one of the most important cave systems in the world, the Škocjan Caves, a world of caves into which the Reka River has dug deep into the limestone. Here, Nature has created a mysterious underground world, a labyrinth of caves, corridors and halls decorated with stalactites of various shapes and sizes. In an entire human lifetime these sculptures grow only a few millimetres, a comforting timelessness of primeval silence and beauty. In 1815, exploration of the cave system began and now six kilometres of paths, steps and bridges have been painstakingly created. The river created the caves. Emerging from the underworld, it crosses two collapsed dolines and disappears underground once more. The underground cave world of Škocjan is a unique testimony of the Earth’s history and in 1986 was designated as a World Heritage Site.

Travel video about destination Lindos in Greece.
Its unique location is not the sole reason that the picturesque town of Lindos has become known as one of the most fascinating locations on the Greek island of Rhodes. Its narrow, intimate lanes are flanked by centuries-old houses, the former residences of captains, ship-owners and wealthy traders. During the Ottoman period Lindos was one of the country's most important ports and it still has a strong association with the sea as do the cultural treasures of this enchanting town. Lindos' famous landmark, the Acropolis, is located above the town. The Acropolis was important not only for those of ancient Greek religious belief but also for those of the Christian faith. According to legend the apostle Paul came ashore beneath the temple in 51 A.D. Its shoreline location as well as the beauty of the town plus its combination of medieval buildings and ancient ruins all add up to why Lindos is such a popular destination. Lindos was once a great maritime power that possessed its own colonies in the Mediterranean and the enchanting atmosphere of this special place can still be experienced today.

Travel video about destination Patan in Nepal.
The wonderful temple roofs in the centre of the Nepalese town of Patan dominate the surroundings and it is believed to be one of the oldest settlements in Kathmandu Valley.More than a hundred and fifty former monasteries highlight the mainly Buddhist character of this intriguing and fascinating town. There are more than fifty great pagoda temples to be found in the three square kilometre area of the old town and the Kumbeshwara Temple is the most important Shiva sanctuary in Patan. Many of the sacred monuments in Durbar Square were the result of extensive building work during the powerful religious dynasty of the Malla sovereigns. The vast concentration of numerous monuments, temples and images that are full of religious symbolism add up to being an overwhelming experience for all who visit here for the first time.

Travel video about destination Madinat Al-Zahra in Spain.
A few kilometres outside the city of Córdoba in southern Spain lie the remains of a once legendary Moorish palace district, the Mahdinat Al-Zahra.It is believed that in around 936 A.D. the Moorish monarch, Abd Ar-Rahman The Third, ordered the construction of the huge residence. Work on the palace, the administrative sections and the gardens took more than forty years to complete. Over ten thousand workmen were involved in its construction but today little of the former splendour of this ‘Andalusian Versailles’ is apparent as only the mighty ruins of the former terraced palace have survived to the present day. Thanks to the intensive restoration and reconstruction work of recent years the buildings of the former Reception Hall provide a fascinating insight into the royal court of the Moors. The Salón of Abd Ar-Rahman The Third shines out once again in all of its ancient and glorious splendour. Soon after its completion the Mahdinat Al-Zahra was described as a ‘wonder of the western hemisphere’, a fairy-tale-like synthesis of the arts located upon the picturesque southern slopes of the Sierra Morena.

Travel video about destination Monreale in Italy.
In the mountain area close to Palermo is the picturesque town of Monreale, a townscape that for more than eight hundred years has been dominated by a single building: Monreale Cathedral was built due to a struggle for power between the Bishop Of Palermo and the Norman King, William The Second. Architecturally, the cathedral possesses a wonderful harmony of styles including those of Norman, Romanic and Arabian. With the building of the cathedral and the elevation of the city to an archbishopric, William The Second had created a worthy competitor to Palermo Cathedral. The Norman cathedral and its adjacent cloister are two historical jewels that give a special significance to the small town of Monreale and the buildings proudly overlook their former rivals in the Sicilian metropolis of Palermo.

Travel video about destination Locronan in France.
The massive tower of Saint Ronan Church rises above the village of Locronan and its eight hundred inhabitants in the French region of Brittany. In the 15th century the sleepy village developed into a prosperous sail-making centre until the arrival of successful competition and lower prices. The village owes its popularity to the old architecture and dark grey granite buildings that lie at the historic heart of Locronan. The sudden loss of prosperity meant that there was insufficient money either to maintain the buildings or to construct new ones. Thus a walk through the picturesque village is like a fascinating journey back to the time of the French Renaissance. Famous film directors such as Roman Polanski have used the village's unique scenery as a backdrop to their movies. With all the evocative ambience of this wonderful place and far away from the noise of motor vehicles, it's like being in another world.

Travel video about destination Kom Ombo in Egypt.
Today, the Egyptian city of Kom Ombo has approximately 70,000 inhabitants. Its outstanding double temple has made it famous throughout the world. Today, the mummified remains of ancient Nile crocodiles are displayed within a chapel that was once dedicated to the goddess, Hathor. These great reptiles were worshipped as sacred animals. One half of the double temple belonged to the crocodile-headed deity, Sobek, the son of Hathor. Today’s Kom Ombo Temple was divided into two asymmetric parts by its Ptolemaic builders. Within the right section of the building, Sobek was worshipped, while the left half was dedicated to Haroeris. The external surrounding wall of the temple contains several strange pictures and reliefs including portrayals of early medical instruments. A kind of medicine cupboard was carved into the stone. It shows highly developed medical implements, among them a variety of surgical instruments and even forceps. The profession of doctor was popular and widespread throughout ancient Egypt. However, the Gods were also called upon as soon as there was illness as it was believed that medicine alone could not provide a cure. Images of numerous Egyptian rulers adorn the walls. Queen Cleopatra, the legendary last Ptolemaic sovereign, was also immortalized here. Outside the temple there is a “Birth House” next to the small Hathor Chapel. The Mammisi contains the remarkable portrayal of a nursing mother. During the Ptolemaic period each temple contained a Mammisi that was decorated with portrayals and hieroglyphs. Here, the birth of the children of the gods was celebrated. Due to the ancient relics and the double temple of Kom Ombo we have been able to gain an even greater understanding of Egypt’s fascinating past.

Travel video about destination Dendera in Egypt.
On the desert border between Luxor and Abydos is the impressive Hathor Temple of Dendera, one of ancient Egypt's most important cities. The existence of the sanctuary for the goddess of love, music, dance and joy dates back to the Early Ancient Empire of 2000 years B.C. Facts relating to the later extension of the temple area ordered by the kings of the 12th Dynasty have also been preserved. Over the years the deciphering of numerous hieroglyphs has revealed numerous ancient fertility rites and also a comprehensive impression of Dendera. The design of the Hathor Temple originates from Late Ptolomaic times. Construction of the temple began in 30 B.C when the country was under Roman rule. The emperors Augustus and Tiberius finally completed the temple in 14 A.D. Architecturally, the monumental sanctuary of Dendera very much resembles other Egyptian temples in Esna, Edfu and Kom Ombo. Being the last sovereign of the Ptolomaians, legendary Egyptian queen, Cleopatra, has been immortalized on the southern outer wall of the temple. The remarkable history of Dendera as an important place of worship can be traced back to a period that extends from antiquity to the golden years of the Roman Empire and to the roots of Christianity.

The southern half of the temple was dedicated to the crocodile god Sobek, god of fertility. Meanwhile, the northern part of the temple was dedicated to the falcon god Horus the Elder.
The temple is a typical because everything is perfectly symmetrical along the main axis.
The outer enclosure wall is mud brick but the temple itself is built of local sandstone from the quarry at Gebel el-Silsila. The modern visitor enters by the gate on the eastern side of the outer enclosure wall.
Much of the temple has been destroyed by the Nile, earthquakes, and later builders who used its stones for other projects.
A few of the three-hundred crocodile mummies discovered in the vicinity are displayed in The Crocodile Museum.

"Luxor" means "Palaces" and it is the premier travel destination in Upper (southern) Egypt and the Nile Valley. The dynastic and religious capital of Middle Kingdom and New Kingdom Egypt, Luxor has much for travellers to enjoy: vast temples, ancient royal tombs, spectacular desert and river scenery and a bustling modern life.
See in Luxor, Egypt
=================
The various Luxor district article pages contain detailed information and suggestions for things to see. Definite highlights, not-to-be-missed, include:
the Valley of the Kings
the temple complexes of Luxor and Karnak
Medinet Habu
the Tombs of the Nobles
The Ramesseum Temple
Do in Luxor, Egypt
=====================
Walk from the Valley of the Queens across the desert and over the cliffs to the Valley of the Kings
Hire a bike and ride around Ancient Thebes - takes you less than 15 minutes to get there.
West Bank scene from a felucca boat, Luxor.
A local felucca ride just before sunset; shouldn't cost you more than about LE 30 (for one person) per hour.
Take a felucca cruise on the Nile for a 2 day trip to Aswan (the reverse trip is recommended, however, due to river currents).
Hire a donkey, horse, or camel to ride around Luxor's West Bank.Go to Pharaoh's Stables, just a short walk from the ferry terminal. They will take you to places where the big coaches cant go,so you can enjoy the real Egypt, with its friendly people and relaxed lifestyle.Every day is different when you see the West Bank by horse or donkey, and the guides will look after you all the way. They have horses for beginners to experienced riders. The Sunset ride and Nile ride is a must do.

Although the political situation is somewhat calmer than previously, it is still advisable to check the most up-to-date situation before travelling:Egypt is currently safe but Visitors are advised to pay attention to local media and liaise frequently with your hotel or host in order to avoid any protests or gatherings.
