Battle Royale is obvious but I don't recall hearing anything about the Plunder Mode, wonder what that is

[–]Ephialties 310 points311 points  (39 children)

the first leaks mentioned it. see thread below:

https://www.reddit.com/r/modernwarfare/comments/dx4me0/battle_royale_coming_to_modern_warfare_map/

basically, kill other players for cash, take cash to ATMs/Banks to rack up savings, player with most savings wins title of best plunderer. other players will hear an alarm when you are depositing cash.

[–]saadghauri 238 points239 points  (17 children)

This sounds very similar to a Titanfall 2 mode in which you had to submit earnings and it even had the alarm. It was pretty fun!

[–]Kered13 40 points41 points  (4 children)

That mode was brutal. The team that was already winning would camp the ATMs, and if anyone from the losing team came to try to deposit they would get killed and have their credits stolen. It ended up having a lot of blowouts.

[–]slickestwood 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Also a lot of crazy, seemingly impossible comebacks in my experience. Games were usually long enough that having that much of a stranglehold was hard to keep the whole time.

[–]TL10 2 points3 points  (2 children)

I had a dedicated Bounty Hunt build. Most I got in a single match IIRC was 4K.

Rock a Pulse Blade pilot, run Smart Pistol, Legion as your Titan. Use your Smart abilities to farm grunts, Pulse to make sure banks are secure. If it's still charging, cook a frag or toss a satchel into the area to tell the campers to GTFO. That or if you have a Tone on your team to ping the area.

I mastered the ability to suss out campers in Titanfall 2. People act real brave till a tick shows up five feet from their face.

[–]SaltTM 74 points75 points  (9 children)

Reminds me of that Battlefield: Hardline mode Blood Money. God I miss Hardline, but a bit more fun with the chaos of just a huge map and a ton of people

[–][deleted] 11 points12 points  (8 children)

I was looking forward to hardline. Love cops vs robbers. The bad first impressions when it released scared me away and I never picked it up

[–]SaltTM 22 points23 points  (3 children)

also didn't help that they fixed BF4 right around when it was getting a foothold, they killed their own game with and older BF lol which is wild to me.

[–][deleted] 13 points14 points  (2 children)

I mean, it was also just bf4 but less in a lot of ways. Felt like a mod.

[–]SaltTM 3 points4 points  (0 children)

imo it felt and looked like a different game. movement and speed as well was just faster.

[–]nutcrackr 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Hardline was actually a good game. The final release was reasonably polished and they introduced a few great features that DICE are too stubborn to implement (e.g. grabbing ammo/health from other players).

[–]deadscreensky 9 points10 points  (0 children)

They must not have been that stubborn. BF5 has had that since launch.

It is a great feature.

[–]Booyo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There's no alarm in Bounty Hunt, but the concept is similar. In that mode, killing AI enemies that drop in waves gives you money. Half of it goes straight to the team's score and half of it goes to your personal bonus, which has to be deposited at a bank between rounds to become part of your team's score. Killing an enemy player steals half of their bonus money.

[–]calibrono 40 points41 points  (4 children)

Isn't that like... Radical Heights? Heh.

[–]pogedenguin 8 points9 points  (0 children)

About to say... like wow.

[–]SadDragon00 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Man that game was a shit show, a glorious shit show.

[–]ItsBreadTime 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I miss that game

[–]JpansAmerica 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Cliffy B is foaming right now

[–]KlausEcir 36 points37 points  (11 children)

actually sounds really fun tbh

[–]HyPeRxColoRz 37 points38 points  (10 children)

Until everyone starts camping ATMs.

I want to know more because I'm sure many people find the traditional "run around like your ass is on fire until you find something that shoots bullets" gameplay to be a little stale at this point, myself included.

That being said, I can see it being very frustrating to become a sitting, defenseless, alarm blaring duck anytime you want a chance at better gear.

Might be fun, might not. But at least I'll get to try it for myself without the $60 price tag.

[–]going_gold 25 points26 points  (4 children)

Everyone starts with a pistol in this.

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Sort of reminds me of Tarkov to be honest, in terms of having a spot you end up having to go to. Is what it is I think. If someone wants to sit around the whole match and do nothing, I guess that's up to them.

[–]kidkolumbo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hopefully they make it where you can't just dump at the same ATM twice in a row, or some other mechanic that forces you to move.

[–]AcEffect3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can buy an upgrade that allows you to deposit money from anywhere

[–]DICK-PARKINSONS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think there's an upgrade you can get that lets you access the ATM from anywhere which should help mitigate camping them

[–]JohnnyJayce 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So BR version of Dark Zone in The Division. Sounds cool.

[–]McManus26 26 points27 points  (2 children)

Plunder is the money of the BR more, used to buy guns, killstreaks, or revive teammates iirc.

There were some old leaks about a mode where you can extract plunders through choppers coming in at certain points, kinda like dark zones in the division. I suppose this is it.

[–]G_reth 3 points4 points  (1 child)

So is it like dangerzone?

[–]SaltTM 8 points9 points  (0 children)

They talk about it here: https://blog.activision.com/call-of-duty/2020-03/Introducing-a-game-changing-FREE-TO-PLAY-experience-Call-of-Duty-Warzone

In Plunder, the race is on to collect the most in-match Cash by looting across the map, taking down enemies to steal their Cash, and completing in-match Contracts.

[–]Janderson2494 70 points71 points  (1 child)

Looks pretty good! I was surprised with how much I enjoyed the gunplay in the new MW, so I'll definitely be giving this a shot considering it's free.

[–]BePositive_BeNice 38 points39 points  (28 children)

This will last until next Call of Duty come out?

Edit: Thanks for the replies, if it's free I guess it will last longer for sure!

[–]lemurstep 60 points61 points  (23 children)

I think even MW2019 itself will retain a decently large playerbase beyond the next release. It's one of the best iterations imo.

[–][deleted] 33 points34 points  (10 children)

I'm not a COD fan by any means. never owned a game. Bought this one on the strength of its beta and I play it a shit ton. I think it'll have very long legs.

[–][deleted] 10 points11 points  (9 children)

Same, first CoD game I've bought because I liked the beta, I've been playing it consistently since it came out. Although the CoD community is just about the worst, most toxic online community I've ever seen.

[–][deleted] 9 points10 points  (8 children)

Oh, I don't think that at all. I honestly haven't had any problems with the community. No bad messages or anything. Rocket league and Dead by Daylight are my two most toxic communities I've come across, to be honest.

[–]eaglessoar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

bo4 was my first cod and i really liked it but wow mw is much improved

[–]Killerx09 173 points174 points  (71 children)

I'm really hoping the netcode is actually decent this time, compared to Blackout's netcode.

Also, after playing Apex it's going to be difficult to go back to a fast-paced Battle Royale with a clunky inventory/looting system.

[–]McManus26 103 points104 points  (38 children)

Inventory and looting are looking very simple in this game.

Apparently, there's no attachment system to manage, and loot drops directly on the ground. No rummaging through crates.

[–]HyPeRxColoRz 35 points36 points  (25 children)

I kinda prefer rummaging through crates, easy to scroll through and find what you want compared to literally sifting through all the drops. I can already see things falling on top of each other making it incredibly annoying to get to the bottom without grabbing the top first.

[–]WorrisomeFuturist 28 points29 points  (23 children)

A player can only hold like 5 items in this game max, half of those are auto pick ups. I don't think anything you said will be a issue.

[–]lemurstep 29 points30 points  (6 children)

Gear dropping directly on the ground gets exponentially complicated and frustrating the more items there are. For me, crates/menu lists in BRs are preferable because they're organized (sorted) and easily accessible. They don't depend on if an object is stuck in world geometry or rolling down a hill. Firestorm's system was atrocious in this regard, and Blackout's system was cumbersome and difficult to learn because it used icons without text and delayed tooltips.

[–]dillydadally 27 points28 points  (2 children)

Have you played Apex Legends before? It's perfect. When enemies die, they drop a box to loot that's organized by loot type, so you can scroll through all their stuff really quickly. For everything else, it's just made to be easily and instantly identifiable (even color coded) and unique visually, is spread out appropriately on the ground, and can instantly be picked up just by looking at it and clicking the pick up button. It works tremendously well.

[–]McManus26 1 point2 points  (2 children)

there isn't that much stuff dropping on the ground. Maybe 5/6 item tops

[–]lemurstep 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Yeah, I watched some gameplay and it wasn't terrible. It does get a little messy at times.

[–]McManus26 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's because of the loadout crates, tons of weapon switches are gonna happen there

[–]WhatPassword 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hrm sounds pretty streamlined - guess we're going to have to see whether that's a good or a bad thing.

I hope that loot dropping to the ground is well-implemented. I wasn't a huge fan of Firestorm in BFV with everyone flinging their weapons / equipment everywhere like a loot pinata when they die.

[–]thenoblitt 5 points6 points  (3 children)

No attachments is kinda lame

[–]McManus26 17 points18 points  (2 children)

Your guns have attachments, but they are based on the rarity of the gun you find and glued to it. A legendary AK may have a thermal scope or a very good perk.

Honestly there's just so many attachments per gun in MW that this was the only way to make it somehow manageable

[–]itscalledANIMEdad 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Eh, I'm just gonna stick with Apex. There'll probably be a spike in players when it comes to steam later in the year and it's already pretty popular.

[–]dillydadally 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In an Activision call of duty game? Don't count on it. They make decisions to save money before they even start making the game that guarantee poor network experience, such as low tick rate servers.

[–]Clbull 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Apex Legends set the gold standard for battle royale games on its launch.

If Activision deliver anything short of that, CoD Warzone will be dead on arrival.

[–]KING_of_Trainers69Event Volunteer ★★ 13 points14 points  (22 children)

Ground War in MW2019 is pretty similar to this on a technical level (though with a lower player count) and works fine, so this should be OK as well.

[–][deleted] 8 points9 points  (21 children)

Ground war is pretty notorious for its FPS drops though.

I get 100+ FPS in BFV but when I played ground war I was lucky to get 40.

Cod just doesn’t do large player counts good at all I scoured the Internet for fixes and tried next to everything and nothing worked.

Then I got the game on a base ps4 and laughed at how much better it ran than my 1070 4790k and 16 gigs of ram pc

[–][deleted] 11 points12 points  (5 children)

Ground war basically runs at 40-50 fps on the base xbox and ps4.

If it runs worse than that you've got something abnormal going on because a 1070 is a huge step up.

[–]TheRealTofuey 6 points7 points  (10 children)

I don't know for sure but your CPU could definitely be the bottleneck. 6 cores minimum is starting to become the standard for alot of heavy AAA games.

[–]WokenWisp 9 points10 points  (2 children)

i have a 1070, 8700k and 16 gigs of ram and have absolutely no frame rate issues anywhere in the game, but my brother has a imacow's cpu and gets sub 60 fps in large modes, it's definitely a cpu bottleneck

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I dunno this guys got a 1070 and 4790k and seems to be doing just fine.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xWs4hj2Hs38

If OP is getting half the fps he should be hes got something else going on.

[–]pDubb420 4 points5 points  (1 child)

I get over 100 with a 1060 and 8700k

[–]gLore_1337 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've never had fps issues in ground war. Do you have the same issues in regular mp?

[–]kaiseresc 3 points4 points  (2 children)

isn't Apex better in the visuals department?
cuz this game looks a whole lotta brown and grey.

[–][deleted] 13 points14 points  (5 children)

Sure, I'll give it a go just with Apex when it comes out. Not usually into BR games but the COD style of gameplay is always some good fun

[–]aroundme 56 points57 points  (6 children)

Other than COD Mobile, it's finally fucking time they released a F2P COD that isn't beholden to the yearly cycle. Blackout had a lifespan of a year, and everyone knew it.

[–]pullazorza 51 points52 points  (4 children)

Blackout had a lifespan of a year

PC user here. Lifespan was around one month. You could notice the lack of players by then.

[–]TwwIX 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yup.

I am on the US West Coast. 2-3 months after release the game was struggling to find just 30-40 people so a match of Blackout could launch. The other games modes were never populated to begin with.

Apex Legends put the final nail in the coffin once it was released.

[–]scorcher117 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Well that is kind of to be expected, call of duty has a primarily console audience and the PC market is so saturated with games that unless you are a huge game then you will probably be dead after not long.

[–]Pluwo4 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That's why I'm glad that Modern Warfare got crossplay. I can actually play modes other than Team Death Match.

[–]Artifact_Beta_Date 17 points18 points  (0 children)

No one knows what blackouts lifespan was, because Apex came and kneecapped it.

[–]Krayzed896 48 points49 points  (6 children)

I wonder if this approach will mean a COD will finally have a title that will have more than 1 year of attention? Assuming it does well for the long haul.

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I really wish they’d give this game one or two more years. The tradition of annual releases is gonna put all this post-launch support to waste.

[–]yeeiser 8 points9 points  (1 child)

They've been treating this CoD kinda like how Ubisoft treats R6 Siege, complete with (though not as big) esports scene. The amount of effort they are putting into MW does seem to aim at it being some sort of departure from the usual "game is dead 6 months after release" habit that Activision has.

BUT, they already said that there will be a new CoD this year, so time will tell

[–]ElmertheAwesome 7 points8 points  (0 children)

GD CoD.. you're like a crazy ex bf/gf. I know you're not good for me, we had fun while it lasted, we both yelled at each other a lot. But I can not stop coming back time and time again, knowing you're going to hurt me in the end.

But maybe this it'll be different, so.. you free on the 10th CoD? Of course you are.

[–]SplintPunchbeef 19 points20 points  (2 children)

I'm definitely a sucker for rhythmic gunplay and explosions over old school hip hop because I really enjoyed this trailer.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Music was cool I just hated the angels and shaky cam. Just give me the gameplay and show off the mechanics through that.

[–]Tpmbyrne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same. I watched it twice

[–]MeanMrMustard48 26 points27 points  (11 children)

Tomorrow? wow dropping this out of nowhere. Probably good timing too before animal crossing and doom start taking time and money from people

[–]mengplex 16 points17 points  (1 child)

tbf they've been teasing it on the main menu of CoD:MW for about a month now, but i guess if you don't play that game then yeah, very sudden announce

[–]Demjan90 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Apex came out of nowhere (it was playable right at announcement), they are probably trying to recreate that success.

[–]ScubaSteve1219 4 points5 points  (3 children)

is there a way to initiate an update remotely? I'll be gone at work when the update drops so i'd love to have it going while i'm working to be done when i get home.

[–]Pretzelz130 5 points6 points  (1 child)

I just googled the same thing and found this post that might still work for this lol

[–]ScubaSteve1219 2 points3 points  (0 children)

awesome, i'll use this method.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Woah tomorrow? Didn't expect so soon.

Any chance we can start downloading it now? Imagine it's probably 80gb or something.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah it's 80+ according to the post on the website. No mentions of preload though.

[–]Spooky_SZN 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Damn just realized 150 players on a gigantic map, I would love it if they introduced a 75vs75 mode and we could relive the MAG days with just stupidly massive battles

[–]usaokay 6 points7 points  (6 children)

Genuinely curious how they're gonna keep this gamemode up as a live-service for the next several years, especially considering that a new title may come out this Fall regardless if it will have BR or not.

For a game (especially F2P) meant for a much wider audience, the lack of CoD legacy fan-service in Warzone is disappointing. It's not like CoD Mobile where it's a blend of three studios' games. Hopefully that'll change in the future with new content updates.

I have to give it credit though. A F2P CoD on mainline platforms is very interesting, and I hope to see how they will expand and grow the gamemode to make it on-par with the BR juggernauts: Fortnite, Apex Legends, and PUBG.

[–]lemurstep 15 points16 points  (2 children)

Have you played MW 2019? I see paid/battlepass skins every match. People are spending like crazy. The cosmetics are shared with the BR mode for those that own the full game, too.

[–]usaokay 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Yeah, but it is just the source of revenue. Obviously there will be new cosmetics every season.

For Battle Royale, I meant new maps, map variations/changes, weapons, vehicles, gadgets, etc. Even Black Ops 4's Blackout got all of those in its first year.

If the devs want F2P-only players to always return to that mode, there has to be more than just cosmetics. It needs to compete on the same level as Fortnite, Apex, and PUBG.

[–]lemurstep 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For BR games, having more maps isn't necessarily a good thing. I think they're going the Fortnite route and just doing one well-refined map. The map itself is huge, an amalgamation of all the Groundwar maps, several of the multiplayer maps, and even more of the unreleased MW2 map remakes. PUBG has map fatigue. Every time they release one, they have to consolidate queues to cut down on wait time between games, or even take one out out of rotation. PUBG also has major performance issues that vary between maps and have persisted, been squashed, and resurfaced several times since early access.

I'm guessing they'll have missions with unlocks specific to Warzone, and I'm also certain all weapons released for the main game will be included in the BR as well.

As far as competing with other BRs, I think it already has a leg up, the refinement and big budget of Fortnite, appealing to the realism side so coveted by PUBG players while avoiding the 16+ different queue pools hell.

From what I've seen, including a full match play-through, it looks far more solid than any other recent BR on release.

[–]mengplex 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think this is why they've opted to release it separate, if they tacked it on to MW then everyone would basically know that investment doesn't matter because people will just move on to next year's iteration when it comes. By splitting it out from this year's title and making it F2P they can do the live service model and give it to a different team

[–]Spooky_SZN 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Looks pretty sick actually, I'm excited to try it asap, I just wonder if this is going to be another Blackout and just be a mode supported for months before the next CoD comes out and has its own BR. It being F2P seems like that might not be the case.

[–]Pretzelz130 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think their goal with it being F2P is to support it throughout the next CoD’s life cycle as well, which hopefully will work out.

[–]HulksInvinciblePants 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Squad sizes?

[–]xChris777 3 points4 points  (2 children)

Apparently trios, which is sooooo annoying.

[–]Kyserham 1 point2 points  (1 child)

So, how does it work? Can I download and play it without owning Modern Warfare (2019)? Steam? Epic Games?

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Battle.net launcher and you don't need to own anything.

[–]Mytre- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was hyped, then I saw the no solo or duo mode..... Ok? Fine, I guess I will just not play it until I find friends that do :/.

[–]Cumpilation 3 points4 points  (3 children)

There no solo, you can join a match in solo but you will be matched with trio/duo/solo

They have no excuse to not do full solo lobby unlike Apex

[–]GodofAss69 4 points5 points  (2 children)

Didn't apex take a year to add solo

[–]zippopwnage 2 points3 points  (3 children)

Man I love these trailers.

I would LOVE to watch an action movie made entirely of this kind of animation.

[–]its_a_simulation 1 point2 points  (1 child)

This was one of the best video game trailers I've ever seen. Amazing stuff.

MW2's Infamy trailer is still an all time number 1 though https://youtu.be/8toHfZm6jNE

[–]sloppydonkeyshow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ha I also think the best trailer is from MW2, but its the launch trailer. Didn't have the same gravitas and narrative of the Infamy trailer, but boy it got me hyped. Still does.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=blshENwbHgs

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (2 children)

I learned next to nothing watching this trailer and found it mildly annoying from start to finish. Nice.

[–]Clbull 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Knowing how Blackout was, I wouldn't be surprised if a low tick rate ruins the experience and makes people go back to PUBG, Apex and Fortnite.

[–]Gunblazer42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wonder if they'll limit progression or something if you don't own modern Warfare, since they're linked, since skins and such sound like they'll carry over.

[–]todd10k 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Can we preload?

[–]Maxximillianaire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What is the monetization? It looks like there is a battle pass but is it the same one that is already there for the base game?

[–]gLore_1337 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My number 1 disappointment is that there is no solid on launch but according to devs there's a good reason for it so we'll see what they mean by that.

[–]Baumbauer1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

any word on who the developer is, does it use the same engine as MW, is the gameplay the same? to me from what I could say on youtube its just some reskin

[–]rainboy1981 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you guys think it's taking so long because it's going to be good?

[–]Wyvern39 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anyone know if we can play split-screen in this like last time?

[–]Eyebrow78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of all the cool shit in this trailer, which bits do you think will be payed for with some sort of currency that you can buy for real money?

Cosmetic only ?? (hopefully)

call me cynical but I doubt it.

[–]Spaddles1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do non Modern Warfare owners have to wait until the game drops for us to start downloading it?
