Drama aside... what info was leaked? Is it the rumored BR mode?

[–][deleted] 498 points499 points  (62 children)

There are clips showing tutorial mission that teaches you how to play it.

[–]Zumbah 616 points617 points  (51 children)

Lmao. The fuckers literally made everyone download a 100gb update that broke the game, let people into their new mode, and got mad that they recorded it.

[–]The-Gaming-Alien 209 points210 points  (46 children)

100GB update???? Is that a joke? Honestly can't tell. If real that's beyond absurd.... What could possibly take up all that space? A new campaign filled with cutscenes or something? jesus

[–]Andire 181 points182 points  (9 children)

They don't care how much space it takes. They know people will clear out their hard drive to play the new call of duty battle royal. Lol

[–]MinDokan 112 points113 points  (5 children)

That's the idea. Eliminate competition .

[–]RaykoX 28 points29 points  (3 children)

I never really thought about it cause im mostly a PC dude but that'd actually be a legitimate (if shady) tactic. Like the OG ps4 came with 250gb 500gb. As you said, use up 150 of those and there's not much room for competition hah. I guess console hard drives are getting too big/cheap now too tho.

[–][deleted] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

500gb.

[–][deleted] 32 points33 points  (1 child)

On Xbox it was 97 or so GB to update. It took me a full 13 hours to download it

[–]ImprovisedJew 25 points26 points  (2 children)

It was like 56 gigs on PS4

[–]TareXmd 24 points25 points  (7 children)

I haven't had 100GB free on my PC since day 2 of me owning it.

[–]strotto 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I just bought the game on PC and it was in total a 160gb download. It literally took me days to download it...

[–]mbbird 4 points5 points  (0 children)

"""""""leak"""""""

[–]McManus26[🍰] 63 points64 points  (6 children)

do you have some links ? I completely missed that

[–][deleted] 110 points111 points  (4 children)

They deleted most posts because most people are too stupid to use streamable instead of YT where everythign gets taken down.

[–]Rictus_Grin 59 points60 points  (3 children)

Streamable gets taken down often too. There's better sites. Maybe Streamja would be safer, but that site sucks.

[–]Ruraraid 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah better sites like putting the videos up on multiple torrent sites.

[–]Death916 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Lbry.tv is uncensored video hosting

[–]Ashviar 160 points161 points  (32 children)

BR mode, that will also launch as Free to Play. So you don't even need to own MW 2019 to play this BR mode unlike Blackout, and it ensures it might last longer than a single CoD cycle.

[–]rube 77 points78 points  (14 children)

Cool... I own MW, but still neat to hear it's FtP.

I feel that MW is being set up more as a game that's meant to be played a long time rather than a yearly release... the way they're handling the DLC and seasons keeps the community together instead of divided by what map pack everyone owns. And now this.

Granted, that won't stop them from still making a new edition later this year... but I'm enjoying MW more than any other recent CoD, so I'll probably pass on the next one.

[–]halftone84 66 points67 points  (0 children)

According to that article, just an image, which if you Google modern warfare warzone, you can still easily find.

[–]Ash_Killem 2021 points2022 points  (103 children)

I have no idea wtf Activision and IW are doing with this release. Such a botched release/announcement. It's no secret. If they just announced the release date and details then they woudn't have to bother with this shit. Worst kept secret in recent memory.

[–]psizone 832 points833 points  (39 children)

It's a mess.

The first thing you see when loading up this season is a teaser trailer for the BR mode, how are they so surprised by the fact that people are trying to get more info?!

[–]U_sm3ll 527 points528 points  (5 children)

Don't forget the huge "CLASSIFIED" selectable game mode option in the main menu.

[–]psizone 369 points370 points  (1 child)

Oh right, can't forget the cocktease tab.

"I can't believe people would try to get more information on the thing we labelled 'classified'." - Activision, probably.

[–][deleted] 262 points263 points  (29 children)

There was a glitch literally putting people at random into BR lobby’s and the BR tutorial

[–]momsdayprepper 203 points204 points  (19 children)

And then some of those people got banned. Classic.

[–]awhaling 54 points55 points  (16 children)

Yeah Activision is really making themselves look like pieces of shit right now. Idk why they would ban people for actually generating hype. It’s their fault if they weren’t ready to release it but put it into the game and managed to leave a way for people to get in it

[–]momsdayprepper 47 points48 points  (14 children)

Oh they're making themselves look like pieces of shit now? They are and always have been pieces of shit, this is nothing new for them at all.

I am actually surprised at how far they're willing to go over what must be the most obvious surprise drop of all time. And to my knowledge, the only bans that have stayed are the accounts linked to leakers, the ones that glitched in and were banned have been reversed. Some people literally put up stuff on the internet without censoring their display names at all, it was very foolish and tbh invited a ban.

[–]Kurise 65 points66 points  (7 children)

You can STILL spectate on custom games and see the BR map.

IW is a joke of a company.

[–]Comrade_Daedalus 208 points209 points  (21 children)

Yeah I'm very confused by this whole thing. Leaks of the battle Royale map and some details have been out since nearly when the game released. We all know about it, we all know it's happening, why not just officially announce it?

[–]jker210 105 points106 points  (16 children)

Personally, I haven't been keeping tracks of the leaks, but a YouTuber I watch named PrestigeIsKey talked about it somewhat.

Apparently people have been somehow getting into the BR mode and actually playing it on accident. Then some people decided to post gameplay, with the full intention of "leaking" it to the public. The thing is that anyone who has gotten to play the gamemode ON ACCIDENT is getting punished anyways. No matter if you had the intent of leaking it or not.

Either way, I don't think it's the fact that the gamemode has been all but announced, it's that gameplay and details of the unique systems of this Battle Royale have been shown to the public. And personally, I think Activision/IW or whoever is kinda handling this in a bad way.

[–]RagnarTheNord 19 points20 points  (0 children)

What's unclear to me is how Activision has any ground to stand on, given that these people are technically accessing software that they paid for. Seems like the equivalent of going into the attic or basement of the house you bought and the former owner getting mad at you for it.

There are people who are much more educated on this than me, but from my perspective, IW shouldn't have put those files in there in the first place if they didn't want them found. Seems they brought this on themselves.

[–]GenJohnONeill 94 points95 points  (13 children)

It's a battle royale in the most generic shooter universe there is, it's not like it's going to life-changing. I can understand a publisher being mad if a story-driven game got leaked, but not a multiplayer mode that they're going to be advertising with full information any minute now.

[–]PapaSmurphy 75 points76 points  (2 children)

it's not like it's going to life-changing.

The point is that showing people what it is now gets in the way of their plan to try and trick people into thinking it will be an innovative, unique experience.

[–]CJNC 19 points20 points  (1 child)

yup exactly. you don't get to fall victim to the measured and manipulative marketing scheme

[–]Infamously_Unknown 29 points30 points  (6 children)

Yeah, I'm pretty sure "BR" already tells you everything important.

[–]GucciJesus 31 points32 points  (0 children)

What they seem to have done is make a game that a lot of fans of the series enjoy, and they moved to a Battle Pass systems which was met positively by many of those same fans, so now they have to do what people call "The Activision Special" and fuck it up.

[–]Ashviar 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I wonder if they set in stone to have this Apex Legends type of release on a random day, and when the leaks happened they still just want to hard double down on a ""surprise"" release of BR.

[–]BadAim 91 points92 points  (9 children)

"A new CoD is coming out this year, just like every year. Surprise!"

[–]chaser2099 58 points59 points  (6 children)

That’s not what the leak was.

[–]jonydevidson 99 points100 points  (5 children)

Yeah but you just replied to a new leak.

[–]chaser2099 92 points93 points  (4 children)

Ah shit, I should probably contact my lawyer then

[–]HawterSkhot 47 points48 points  (1 child)

Hello, my name is Jonathan Activision and I'm issuing a subpoena for any information you have on this hot leak. See you in court.

[–]GrammatonYHWH 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Brand new leaks - It will have perks (including scavenger, and cold blooded) and killstreak rewards (including UAV, a bombing run by aircraft, a piloted smartbomb strike, and remote control of a gunship turret)

[–]AoE2manatarms 143 points144 points  (49 children)

Can reddit really pull personal data from an account?

[–]Shitboxjeep 170 points171 points  (24 children)

Probably IP and email address associated with that account

[–]nathanisatwork 44 points45 points  (21 children)

Who actually uses an email to sign up

[–]DrippyWaffler 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Hey I wanted the damn trophy

[–]itz_fine_bruh 87 points88 points  (18 children)

If they can, it should a cause of concern for all of the redditors even if they are not doing anything bad. The idea of being treated like an object that is passed around is uneasy to say the least.

[–]MrPeeps28 68 points69 points  (6 children)

On the internet you are just an object though. Advertising companies can take a phone's advertising id and estimate where you live, ethnicity, income, gender, and interests with a pretty high degree of accuracy. That id is resettable though.

You have to take a lot of precautions to protect your privacy, but even then it's safe to assume you have data out there.

Edit: wording to clarify how advertising ids are used

[–]Noctis_Lightning 15 points16 points  (2 children)

If the product is free, you are the product.

Spez has admitted openly to wanting to make money. I guess reddit drama blows over quick and with the churn of new users people forget.

I guess people forget about Aaron Swartz too. Reddit is a far cry from what it once was

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aaron_Swartz

[–]C-C-X-V-I 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yup, the people who've been here 2-3 years have no idea what reddit used to be

[–]krimsonstudios 18 points19 points  (1 child)

It's a court order, they are legally required to comply. This isn't just Reddit handing over data to Activision because they asked nicely.

[–][deleted] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I mean, you can just not log that data in the first place, so there is nothing to hand over.

But some laws require it for this and that (like anything that touched money, or ISPs in most countries), and as a company you probably want it just for stuff like protection against spam/bots .

[–]suulia 217 points218 points  (52 children)

When posting things like leaks...

  1. Use a VPN.
  2. Open a new account with a throwaway email account.
  3. Don't use that account again.

[–]cohrt 128 points129 points  (41 children)

also don't post from your house. go to starbucks or some other place with free wifi.

[–]prince_of_gypsies 100 points101 points  (20 children)

And don't use chrome.

[–][deleted] 133 points134 points  (12 children)

Brb posting leaks using Tails on a VPN at my local McDonald's with my screen brightness at minimum so no one can see what I'm doing

[–]HLef 113 points114 points  (6 children)

at my local McDonald's

Rookie mistake. You have to drive at least 500 miles away using only country roads in a stolen car with no plates on first. Then find a McDonald's.

Edit: And don't bring your cellphone.

[–]the_kg 63 points64 points  (4 children)

It helps to wear stolen clothes too.

And go to a stolen McDonald’s.

[–]undanny1 16 points17 points  (3 children)

You should also use a fake identity while you do it

[–]c0mplexx 8 points9 points  (1 child)

get yourself one of those privacy filters for your screen too!

[–]BetterCallSal[🍰] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

And make sure porn is playing really loud so people just think you're watching porn

[–]SquadPoopy 16 points17 points  (1 child)

Use something that no reasonable person would ever think to use, like internet explorer or Edge.

[–]dannybates 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Netscape

[–]lillgreen 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Realistically you shouldn't ever use chrome just because of googles business practices. It's mostly irrelevant how well chrome is programmed or not.

[–]KuntaStillSingle 5 points6 points  (1 child)

And burn off your fingerprints before you touch the keyboard

[–]prince_of_gypsies 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Don't forget to scratch up your retinas so they can't scan them.

[–]Halt-CatchFire 16 points17 points  (8 children)

VPN already solves that doesn't it? There's no mandatory data retention law in the US, so even if they subpoena'd PIA or whoever it wouldn't matter.

[–]sotolibre 6 points7 points  (7 children)

Yeah no need for another wifi network if you have a VPN. Should always be using a reputable VPN that doesn't keep logs (I'd only trust PIA or Mullvad) so no need to jump through the extra hoop of driving to another wifi spot

[–]Halt-CatchFire 23 points24 points  (6 children)

This thread Is a pretty good example of why you should always take reddit comments with a grain of salt. Dozens of people on here recommending things like buying a burner phone, or doing it from a library the next town over. So many people treating Activision like some shadowy government organization. It's hilarious.

[–]sotolibre 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah all you need is a VPN to post video game leaks on Reddit lol.

[–]daymanAAaah 2 points3 points  (0 children)

And don’t be seen on cctv

[–]C-C-X-V-I 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you're talking a reddit account just don't put in an email.

[–]NatoBoram 5 points6 points  (2 children)

Instead of a VPN, just use Tor.

[–]YourBoyR 256 points257 points  (87 children)

What personal detail would reddit have? If I'm leaking stuff from the company I'm working for I'd absolutely be using a VPN.

[–]kaplushka 293 points294 points  (37 children)

You really overestimate how well even relatively privacy conscious people tend to do at hiding their identities. A lot of people end up getting nailed by having an email address that can be identified to them somewhere down the 2-factor authentication line.

[–]downeastkid 98 points99 points  (16 children)

reddit doesn't even need an email to sign up though

[–]gregguygood 31 points32 points  (6 children)

Reddit is constantly trying to get me to enter an email though

[–]LeCrushinator 39 points40 points  (1 child)

Because it's easier to identify bots if email addresses are required, and it's less of a headache if you forget your password and need to recover it.

[–]slyg 10 points11 points  (0 children)

And it is easier to sell your data

[–]Neato 23 points24 points  (17 children)

Wow. If you know you want to leak something just drive to a neighboring city's library (or county if closer, use a guest pass) and sign up for a new account then post it. Burn image or data to CD. There's probably some forensics to do on the actual image with game client tagging these days but if not then most public library's wipe content when you logout. And being at a new computer w/o logging into your accounts means your digital signature isn't being used.

[–]FROTHY_SHARTS 24 points25 points  (15 children)

Our just make a reddit account with a fake name in 5 seconds and post it with McDonald's wifi

[–]albaniax 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Reddit might store a unique mobile device identifier

[–]SantiagoxDeirdre 17 points18 points  (13 children)

The WiFi logs your MAC address when you connect. Unless you’re spoofing it, you’re completely identifiable.

[–]zonkyslayer 20 points21 points  (0 children)

For a legal case I’d completely agree. Companies presenting a case in court would have to go through the appropriate channels for this and need to get info from VPN, Reddit, other possible websites.

If you were doing it illegally it could be pretty easy depending on your skill set , but there would be no valid legal case. Fingerprinting online is super powerful and can shatter anonymity. This is why journalists leaking information about corrupt governments use TOR because anything posted over the cleanet can be traced back to you

Unless you’re using TOR running on something like Tails with JS disabled and Noscript along with measures in place to avoid Fingerprinting you stand a good chance of being found out

Edit: I don’t think Activision is going to go this far I’m just saying in general if it’s done on the clearnet it can be found out if someone wants to. I feel like Activision is doing it as a scare to keep others away from leaking.

[–]DefinitelyNotRobotic 33 points34 points  (5 children)

I imagine that if anybody was seriously looking for you a vpn would be useless.

[–]dirkdigglered 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yep. Mutual friend of mine works as a privacy/data associate at a major law firm, and they said you'd have to go to great lengths to protect your identity.

Apparently this shit happens with Glassdoor too. Someone will mention sexual harassment, and they would get subpoena'd because of it.

[–]pokepat460 20 points21 points  (26 children)

A VPN is not enough for someone doing something like this. You'd want to go full third world reporter and use tails os and route all internet traffic through tor with all javascript and related things disabled.

Vpns only protect against the most basic measures like region locks.

[–]ExplodedMuffin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Genuinely curious, if you were on a non-logging VPN the entire time, from creating the throwaway to making the post on the subreddit, what could a subpoena reveal here?

[–]ZeroesaremyHero 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I doubt anything actually gets done with this. Activision is just trying to big dick their way into getting what they want.

[–]burningphoenix777 563 points564 points  (37 children)

“No infringing content was posted in the thread itself” So basically Activision is abusing the law. And going after innocent people.

Unless these people signed an NDA, they did nothing wrong.

[–]Gr1pp717 101 points102 points  (12 children)

Unless these people signed an NDA, they did nothing wrong.

Now they just have to hire a lawyer to say that for them. Or, more likely, pay activision lawyers extortion fees to settle out of court.

[–]Elogotar 33 points34 points  (10 children)

Is it possible to file a counter suit of some kind for over-reaching?

[–]BustermanZero 51 points52 points  (2 children)

It's arguably what SLAPP laws are for.

[–]Neato 16 points17 points  (1 child)

Have there been any SLAPP cases against giant corporations or very rich individuals? I've heard about some against smaller corps.

[–]Gr1pp717 22 points23 points  (5 children)

Unfortunately, this is basically standard practice. It's very rare that such cases make it anywhere.

In construction there's a joke about "design, build, litigate" because buildings often result in everyone involved getting extorted sued for any minor problem. The lawyers will just pull everyone in, related or not, in the hopes of getting settlements...

The only case that I'm aware of that the courts stepped in was when a law firm was sending out mass mail for illegal downloads. They rarely had any proof, but knew people would pay just to avoid court.

[–]danrod17 6 points7 points  (3 children)

I got one of those letters in the mail. I ignored it. I was also 16. Court threw it out saying they weren’t a debt collector.

[–][deleted] 18 points19 points  (0 children)

“No infringing content was posted in the thread itself” So basically Activision is abusing the law.

According to one interpretation. A court might not agree.

[–][deleted] 92 points93 points  (17 children)

I really wouldn't trust TorrentFreak to put out unbiased information about a lawsuit.

From what I could gather, it says the discussion didn't contain infringing content, not the post itself.

[–][deleted] 124 points125 points  (16 children)

Torrentfreak generally has very solid reporting.

An image of a game is not infringing no matter what. That's not how copyright works, a screenshot is protected by fair use, otherwise every screenshot would be infringement.

The issue at hand here is not infringement, it is that one of their employees has breached NDA. They are using the DMCA as a convenient tool to abuse to take that information down, however the DMCA would not cover this situation.

[–]xtkbilly 17 points18 points  (0 children)

The unfortunate thing is... Would that even matter? Would it get to the courts to decide, or would reddit just go ahead and comply, rather than face the legal trouble they probably would win?

[–][deleted] 15 points16 points  (1 child)

You mean the worst kept secret in the video game industry? Think it's utterly ridiculous. It'd be like a book company suing because someone revealed the dog is red in the new Clifford the Big Red Dog book.

[–]Chozmonster 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Spoiler tag that shit! Jeez!

[–]ReaperTwoShots 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately game companies do this, they search all peoples facebooks, twitters and other accounts to find out who the original leaker in the company was, so many people have been sacked because of their friends saying something on social media.

[–]voidvector 77 points78 points  (13 children)

Feels like a company should need to prove they were financially damaged first. How does the juror know this is their IP if they haven't even announce it?

[–]sureoz 11 points12 points  (2 children)

What you're talking about is like 20 legal steps down the road. A subpoena can be filed by anyone who files a civil case in a US court, regardless of merit because it doesn't have any legal ramifications for the person targeted, its just a tool to get information. You can resist it if you think its asking for irrelevant information, but that costs lawyer money.

[–]CombatMuffin 7 points8 points  (4 children)

They would have to release it to the court, which many companies hate doing, because it basically puts the trade secret out there, unless they can get it redacted.

The damage doesn't need to be precise, they can argue it is reasonably going to happen based on the early release (as a consequential damage). Is it easy to prove? Not always, but it's possible.

[–]The-student- 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Silly Activision, don't they know subpoenas can just be ignored these days?

[–]PurpsMaSquirt 13 points14 points  (1 child)

This is about finding if an employee or QA contracted worker leaked Warzone. Activision couldn’t care less about the innocent people involved if it wasn’t an employee.

[–]poklane 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The funny thing here is that all the recent leaks are a result of Infinity Ward breaking the game with a new patch which causes players to be randomly booted into Warzone.
Maybe Activision should be salty about the people they're paying to develop their games releasing broken shit, not the people merely sharing what the game shows them because of the broken shit.

[–]ginfish 7 points8 points  (0 children)

And then what, Activision? If the person's not a tester or an employee, what will they do about it? Revoke their right to the software(CoD)?

Get bent, Activision ✅

[–]Deus-Ex-Processus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Allow this appointment lightly, the Council does not. Disturbing is this move by Chancellor Palpatine.

[–]ImRikkyBobby 28 points29 points  (21 children)

They wont find him.

When people leak shit (if they are smart) they will create a random account using a fresh email and post from a public computer (such as library etc) so they can't be traced.

[–]Mephzice 23 points24 points  (3 children)

just last month a employee of a nintendo magazine got the entire magazine blacklisted (and probably killed) for leaking info on reddit with his normal email

[–]ImRikkyBobby 7 points8 points  (2 children)

Yeah... probably shouldn't use your regular email. Got to make a burner e-mail and a burner user name on Reddit. Then when you post, you have to post from an IP address that is in no way shape or form related to you. lol

[–]Mephzice 10 points11 points  (1 child)

that is what they should do, never underestimate how dumb the leakers are though. Well can be.

[–]ImRikkyBobby 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They are like the people you see who rob service stations knowing damn well there are cameras in each one. They walk in with no gloves on, no hat or hood or anything. They just waltz in and "Give me the money!".

Some criminals baffle me. Like have they not seen a single episode of Cops?

[–]GeneticsGuy 64 points65 points  (5 children)

You put too much confidence in people. So many people have posted stuff on Reddit without properly obfuscating themselves and gotten fired as a result.

[–]THEAETIK 20 points21 points  (2 children)

Like that one guy that posted about his new job at Google with pictures of his uniform, cards, and work place?

GrandpaSimpsonHat.gif

[–]alerise 7 points8 points  (1 child)

It was his first job in several years, and it was for a company contracted to work with Google, so it was a double/triple whoops.

Kinda sad, but lesson learned for a lot of people hopefully.

[–][deleted] 8 points9 points  (8 children)

Would a VPN not achieve the same thing, but without the risk of being seen on a security camera?

[–][deleted] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I would assume that it depends how good the VPN is

[–]Neato 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's the least I would do to leak anything protected under an NDA. People who don't are insane.

[–]prince_of_gypsies 23 points24 points  (17 children)

Yeah, this is fucked up. Reddit shouldn't be able to do this to a user unless the user is involved in human trafficking or some shit like that. It's a just a damn video game.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If i were him i'll file a counter suit against them and get the free money,he infringed nothing the warzone was already in game memory so it's their fault for being idiots morons dumbasses, and trash activation think they're above everyone the way they treat people is unacceptable, hope one day they'll get bankrupt and get fucked ,their games are shit anyways
