Macedonia (i/ˌmæsᵻˈdoʊniə/ mas-i-DOH-nee-ə; Macedonian: Македонија, tr. Makedonija, IPA: [makɛˈdɔnija]), officially the Republic of Macedonia (Macedonian: Република Македонија , tr. Republika Makedonija), is a country located in the central Balkan peninsula in Southeast Europe. It is one of the successor states of the former Yugoslavia, from which it declared independence in 1991. It became a member of the United Nations in 1993, but, as a result of an ongoing dispute with Greece over use of the name Macedonia, it was admitted under the provisional description of "the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia" (Поранешна Југословенска Република Македонија, tr. Poranešna Jugoslovenska Republika Makedonija), abbreviated as FYROM.
A landlocked country, the Republic of Macedonia is bordered by Kosovo to the northwest, Serbia to the north, Bulgaria to the east, Greece to the south, and Albania to the west. It constitutes approximately the northwestern third of the larger geographical region of Macedonia, which also comprises the neighbouring parts of northern Greece and a smaller portion in southwestern Bulgaria. The country's capital is Skopje, with 506,926 inhabitants according to the 2002 census. Other cities include Bitola, Kumanovo, Prilep, Tetovo, Ohrid, Veles, Štip, Kočani, Gostivar, Kavadarci, and Strumica. It has over 50 lakes, plus sixteen mountains higher than 2,000 m (6,562 ft). Macedonia is a member of the UN and of the Council of Europe. Since December 2005 it has also been a candidate for joining the European Union and has applied for NATO membership.

15 July 2016 The outgoing head of UNIFIL, Major-General Luciano Portolano, has stressed the importance of continuing close engagement and relations with the local population and the authorities for successful implementation of the UN Mission’s mandate. “Operationally I define the relationship with the local population as my center of gravity,” he said in a recent interview. “It means an element that, if it exists, might lead to success; if it doesn’t exist it will lead, for sure, to complete disruption of the Mission.” Major-General Portolano added: “So the link between the UNIFIL members and the local population is the most important element I recommend for the future leadership to take into consideration.” The Italian General is leaving UNIFIL next week after leading the UN peacek...

With the world's population on the brink of reaching an historic seven billion people, growth is not evenly distributed. While nearly 80 million people are added every year, many countries - especially in Eastern Europe - are losing population. With an ageing population and a diminishing workforce, it is becoming increasingly difficult for countries like the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, and others in the region, to provide access to health services and special facilities for the elderly. United Nations Population Fund is working with governments and key partners in the region by providing technical support at the regional and country level. - Rob McBride/UNFPA
The Vevchani Carnival takes place on 13th and 14th January every year. It is believed that the custom is over 1,400 years old. It is based on old Pagan beliefs and rituals. Essentially the Carnival is the ritual of calling after Saint Basil the Great, which coincides with the Twelve Days of Orthodox Christmas and the Orthodox New Year. The festivity is dedicated to Saint Basil the Great (St. Vasilij), commonly known as Vasilitsa that marks the beginning of the new year (January 14) according to the Julian calendar. The Carnival witnesses the passing of the old year and the coming of the new one. The participants of the Carnival are known as Vasiličari (Macedonian: Василичари). In 1993 the Carnival and the village of Vevčani officially became apart of the World Federation of Carnival Citie...

A video I made during my trip to Skopje, Macedonia in March, 2016. Skopje was a very surprising city. I didn't know too much about it but it turned out to be beautiful and full of many different fun and interesting things to do. If you're heading to the Balkans and looking for an affordable destination to spend a few days I highly recommend visiting Skopje, Macedonia. Some of the different sights in the video include: - Macedonia Square - The Alexander the Great Statue - The Stone Bridge - The Old Bazaar and Old Town - The King Phillip Statue - Kale Fortress (Skopje Fortress) - Millenium Cross - Matka Canyon - The Structures Along the Vardar River Special thanks to Skopje Daily Tours for making this epic trip possible. www.skopjedailytours.com Keep up with me online! One man can live his life
Between grief and glory
Choosing a way to walk, no
Matter what it takes
And at the final step before
The greatest journey
The only he could see
the deeds he leaves behind
One nation starts to grow and
walk through the ages
Creating history that no man
ever doubt
Times when the dark was thick
And life was out of value
Lights of Democracy where
Bright around the place
And they lived in harmony
Changed the course of History
In the meantime troops of
Darkness
Start to gather round
Magnetized by your brightness
Land of living Gods
And they live in misery
Building walls, what irony!
They want to steal from
Macedonia
The Macedonia
Never gonna get you and
I believe that you know
That I 'll be killing what theyre dreaming
And I hope you ll understand
Time to see
Never let the lizard
To be near you
Because the lizard
Changes colors
And its trying to take in you
Then one day your son will
Rise, Father of Our Land
Leader and Protector of the
Macedonians
Troops of Lions on his side,
March against the walls
Crushing down the puppet leaders
and their dirty world
Even though your ages older
I can hear your laugh
Cause they want to live
Your Future
People with no past
But You re dressed in blue and white
Like the colours in your sky
