They say the one constant in human history is war. This appears to be pretty accurate. Looking back over human history it seems like we have always been at war with one another somewhere on the planet. Of course, today’s military forces are much different than the armies of Caesar or Napoleon. Some countries boast armies with millions of soldiers, thousands of tanks, dozens of nuclear powered naval vessels and thousands of nuclear weapons. Today, when a war begins, it can be resolved in a matter of days, weeks or months. In the past, conflicts often dragged on for years or several decades.
Whether the history, the battles, the technology or just plain sizes, we are fascinated by the military. If you’ve seen some of our other videos or articles on TheRichest then you know we’re always interested in assessing the world’s militaries when it comes to the biggest, smallest, fastest, deadliest and most expensive. It’s time to change things up a bit. This time around we’re looking at some of the more shocking facts you may not have known. What are these? Russian Military soldiers show off thier military power. The Armed Forces of the Russian Federation (Russian: Вооружённые Си́лы Росси́йской Федера́ции, tr. Vooruzhonnije Síly Rossíyskoj Federátsii) are the military service of the Russian Federation, established after the dissolution of the Soviet Union. On 7 May 1992, Boris Yeltsin signed a presidential decree establishing the Russian Ministry of Defence and placing all Soviet Armed Forces troops on the territory of the Russian SFSR under Russian control.[5] The Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces is the President of Russia. The Russian Armed Forces were formed in 1992.
Armed forces under the Ministry of Defence are divided into:
the three "branches of Armed Forces" (вида вооружённых сил): the Ground Force, Aerospace Forces, and the Navy
the two "separate troop branches" (Отдельные рода войск): the Strategic Missile Troops and the Airborne Troops
the Rear of the Armed Forces, which has a separate status of its own
There are additionally two further "separate troop branches", the National Guard and the Border Service. These are not normally included as branches of the "Armed Forces" but are nonetheless used in armed conflicts.
The number of personnel is specified by decree of the President of Russia. On 1 January 2008, a number of 2,019,629 units, including military of 1,134,800 units, was set.[6] In 2010 the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) estimated that the Russian Armed Forces numbered about 1,027,000 active troops and in the region of 2,035,000 reserves (largely ex-conscripts).[7] As opposed to personnel specified by decree, actual personnel in the forces are paid was reported by the Audit Chamber of Russia as 766,000 in October 2013.[8] As of December 2016, the armed forces are at 93 percent of the required manpower.[9]
According to SIPRI, Russia spent $66.4 billion on arms in 2015.[4] Between the years 2005-2009 and 2010-2014, Russian exports of major weapons increased by 37 percent according to SIPRI.[10] According to the Russian Defense Ministry, share of modern weapons in the Armed Forces reached from 26 to 48% among different kinds of troops in December 2014.[11] This was raised to 30.5–70.7% as of July 2015.[12] Average was 48 per cent over the first half of 2016.[13]

a large US navy formation. The United States Navy (USN) is the naval warfare service branch of the United States Armed Forces and one of the seven uniformed services of the United States. It was estimated to be larger than the next 13 largest navies combined in terms of battle fleet tonnage in 2009.[5][6] The U.S. Navy also has the world's largest aircraft carrier fleet, with ten in service, two under construction,[7] eight more planned, and two in active reserve. The 21st century U.S. Navy maintains a sizable global presence, deploying in such areas as East Asia, the Mediterranean, and the Middle East. It is a blue-water navy with the ability to project force onto the littoral regions of the world, engage in forward areas during peacetime, and rapidly respond to regional crises, making it an active player in U.S. foreign and defense policy.
The Navy is administratively managed by the Department of the Navy, which is headed by the civilian Secretary of the Navy. The Department of the Navy is itself a division of the Department of Defense, which is headed by the Secretary of Defense. The Chief of Naval Operations is a four-star admiral and the senior naval officer of the Department of the Navy.[8] However, the CNO may not be the highest ranking naval officer in the armed forces if the Chairman or the Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff are Navy officers, who by law, outrank the CNO.

The United States Navy is a seaborne branch of the military of the United States. The Navy's three primary areas of responsibility:[11]

The maintenance of naval aviation, including land-based naval aviation, air transport essential for naval operations and all air weapons and air techniques involved in the operations and activities of the Navy
The development of aircraft, weapons, tactics, technique, organization, and equipment of naval combat and service elements.
U.S. Navy training manuals state that the mission of the U.S. Armed Forces is "to prepare and conduct prompt and sustained combat operations in support of the national interest."[12] As part of that establishment, the U.S. Navy's functions comprise sea control, power projection and nuclear deterrence, in addition to "sealift" duties.[13]
Organization
The Navy falls under the administration of the Department of the Navy, under civilian leadership of the Secretary of the Navy (SECNAV). The most senior naval officer is the Chief of Naval Operations (CNO), a four-star admiral who is immediately under and reports to the Secretary of the Navy. At the same time, the Chief of Naval Operations is one of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, which is the second-highest deliberatory body of the armed forces after the United States National Security Council, although it only plays an advisory role to the President and does not nominally form part of the chain of command. The Secretary of the Navy and Chief of Naval Operations are responsible for organizing, recruiting, training, and equipping the Navy so that it is ready for operation under the command of the unified combat command commanders.

Military
The military, also called the armed forces, are forces authorized to use deadly force, and weapons, to support the interests of the state and some or all of its citizens. The task of the military is usually defined as defense of the state and its citizens, and the prosecution of war against another state. The military may also have additional sanctioned and non-sanctioned functions within a society, including, the promotion of a political agenda, protecting corporate economic interests, internal population control, construction, emergency services, social ceremonies, and guarding important areas. Navy
A navy or maritime force is a fleet of waterborne military vessels (watercraft) and its associated naval aviation, both sea-based and land-based. It is the branch of a nation's armed forces principally designated for naval and amphibious warfare; namely, lake-borne, riverine, littoral, or ocean-borne combat operations and related functions. It includes anything conducted by surface ships, amphibious ships, submarines, and seaborne aviation, as well as ancillary support, communications, training, and other fields; recent developments have included space-related operations. The strategic offensive role of a navy is projection of force into areas beyond a country's shores (for example, to protect sea-lanes, ferry troops, or attack other navies, ports, or shore installations). The strategic defensive purpose of a navy is to frustrate seaborne projection-of-force by enemies. The strategic task of the navy also may incorporate nuclear deterrence by use of Submarine-launched ballistic missiles. Naval operations can be broadly divided between riverine and littoral applications (brown-water navy), open-ocean applications (blue-water navy), and something in between (green-water navy), although these distinctions are more about strategic scope than tactical or operational division.

On 1 January 2008, a number of 2,019,629 units, including military of 1,134,800 units, was set.[6] In 2010 the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) estimated that the Russian Armed Forces numbered about 1,027,000 active troops and in the region of 2,035,000 reserves (largely ex-conscripts).[7] As opposed to personnel specified by decree, actual personnel in the forces are paid was reported by the Audit Chamber of Russia as 766,000 in October 2013.[8] As of December 2016, the armed forces are at 93 percent of the required manpower.[9] According to SIPRI, Russia spent $66.4 billion on arms in 2015.[4] Between the years 2005-2009 and 2010-2014, Russian exports of major weapons increased by 37 percent according to SIPRI.[10] According to the Russian Defense Ministry, share of modern weapons in the Armed Forces reached from 26 to 48% among different kinds of troops in December 2014.[11] This was raised to 30.5–70.7% as of July 2015.[12] Average was 48 per cent over the first half of 2016.[13] -

Russian Military soldiers show off thier military power. The Armed Forces of the Russian Federation (Russian: Вооружённые Си́лы Росси́йской Федера́ции, tr. Vooruzhonnije Síly Rossíyskoj Federátsii) are the military service of the Russian Federation, established after the dissolution of the Soviet Union. On 7 May 1992, Boris Yeltsin signed a presidential decree establishing the Russian Ministry of Defence and placing all Soviet Armed Forces troops on the territory of the Russian SFSR under Russian control.[5] The Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces is the President of Russia. The Russian Armed Forces were formed in 1992.
Armed forces under the Ministry of Defence are divided into:
the three "branches of Armed Forces" (вида вооружённых сил): the Ground Force, Aerospace Forces, and the Navy
the two "separate troop branches" (Отдельные рода войск): the Strategic Missile Troops and the Airborne Troops
the Rear of the Armed Forces, which has a separate status of its own
There are additionally two further "separate troop branches", the National Guard and the Border Service. These are not normally included as branches of the "Armed Forces" but are nonetheless used in armed conflicts.
The number of personnel is specified by decree of the President of Russia. On 1 January 2008, a number of 2,019,629 units, including military of 1,134,800 units, was set.[6] In 2010 the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) estimated that the Russian Armed Forces numbered about 1,027,000 active troops and in the region of 2,035,000 reserves (largely ex-conscripts).[7] As opposed to personnel specified by decree, actual personnel in the forces are paid was reported by the Audit Chamber of Russia as 766,000 in October 2013.[8] As of December 2016, the armed forces are at 93 percent of the required manpower.[9]
According to SIPRI, Russia spent $66.4 billion on arms in 2015.[4] Between the years 2005-2009 and 2010-2014, Russian exports of major weapons increased by 37 percent according to SIPRI.[10] According to the Russian Defense Ministry, share of modern weapons in the Armed Forces reached from 26 to 48% among different kinds of troops in December 2014.[11] This was raised to 30.5–70.7% as of July 2015.[12] Average was 48 per cent over the first half of 2016.[13]

The service has 317,054 personnel on active duty and 109,671 in the Navy Reserve. It operates 290 ships in active service and more than 3,700 aircraft.[3]
The U.S. Navy traces its origins to the Continental Navy, which was established during the American Revolutionary War and was essentially disbanded as a separate entity shortly thereafter. It played a major role in the American Civil War by blockading the Confederacy and seizing control of its rivers. It played the central role in the World War II defeat of Japan. The 21st century U.S. Navy maintains a sizable global presence, deploying in such areas as East Asia, the Mediterranean, and the Middle East. It is a blue-water navy with the ability to project force onto the littoral regions of the world, engage in forward areas during peacetime, and rapidly respond to regional crises, making it an active player in U.S. foreign and defense policy.
The Navy is administratively managed by the Department of the Navy, which is headed by the civilian Secretary of the Navy. The Department of the Navy is itself a division of the Department of Defense, which is headed by the Secretary of Defense. The Chief of Naval Operations is a four-star admiral and the senior naval officer of the Department of the Navy.[8] However, the CNO may not be the highest ranking naval officer in the armed forces if the Chairman or the Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff are Navy officers, who by law, outrank the CNO.

The maintenance of naval aviation, including land-based naval aviation, air transport essential for naval operations and all air weapons and air techniques involved in the operations and activities of the Navy
The development of aircraft, weapons, tactics, technique, organization, and equipment of naval combat and service elements.
U.S. Navy training manuals state that the mission of the U.S. Armed Forces is "to prepare and conduct prompt and sustained combat operations in support of the national interest."[12] As part of that establishment, the U.S. Navy's functions comprise sea control, power projection and nuclear deterrence, in addition to "sealift" duties.[13]
Organization

In this travel video guide to San Francisco, I travel to San Francisco, California, one of the most scenic cities in the United States, if not the world.
In town for a conference for only four days, only one of which was going to be sunny, I headed out to see as much as I could in a day. I started my day by visiting the Haight-Ashbury district, San Francisco's most famous neighborhood. Ground zero for the Summer of Love, this neighborhood's bohemian past is still evident as you walk around the area, though things have changed quite a bit.
Next I headed to the Mission District, San Francisco's "It" neighborhood right now. Home to a large and varied immigrant population, cheap rents have lured many a young and hip individual to the area, evidenced by the artisanal chocolate shops, used book stores and proliferation of coffee shops. There are also great taco shops here. I visit Taqueria Cancun and El Toro to see which I liked best.
Then I hopped on a boat to get a unique view of the San Francisco Bay and the Golden Gate Bridge, which we sailed under, then traveled past Alcatraz Island and Angel Island.
Wrapping things up, I walked through the Presidio for a pilgrimage to Lucasfilm, complete with a Yoda fountain, then hiked one of the Presidio's many trails to get a great view as the sun set over the bay.

In this travel video tour of Portland, Oregon, I travel to Portland, one of the most unique cities in the United States.
I started my trip off by hopping off a plane and then immediately hopping onto a bus. But not just any bus, a bus operated by Brewvana Brewery Tours, the mostly women-run craft beer brewery tour company. Portland, or know as Beervana to some, is home to 55 breweries within its borders, and is truly a beer-lover's paradise. On my tour we made stops at Rogue Ales & Spirits, Laurelwood Pubic House & Brewery, Widmer Brothers Brewery and Sidecar Bar, where I had the chance to sit down over a pint with the founder and owner of Brewvana, Ashley Rose Salvitti.
While in Portland, I stayed at the Tiny House Hotel, a hotel made up of, you guessed it, tiny houses. In the next portion of my video guide I give a tour of my "crib" to show what it's like to live and stay in a tiny house.
Then, in an effort to get a chance to experience the famed brunch scene in Portland, I stopped in at The Tin Shed Garden Cafe, located down the street from where I was staying in the New Alberta Arts District.
In the interest of learning more about food, I headed to the downtown location of the Portland Farmers Market, located in a beautiful stretch of downtown Portland. Here, I got a tour of the grounds with Mona Johnson, then had the opportunity to meet up with some of the vendors, including Matt Choi of Choi's Kimchi Company, and famed chef and artisanal pickle impresario, David Barber of Picklopolis and Bingo! Sandwiches.
In need of a little peace and serenity, I then visited the Lan Su Chinese Garden, a peaceful and beautiful oasis in an otherwise busy and hectic part of downtown.
When visiting Portland, there's no reason to spend all your time in the city, especially with so much to do outside the city limits. The next day I took a road trip with local Matthew Domingo to explore the Columbia River Gorge and the numerous trails and waterfalls just off the road you can check out.
Then, to wrap things up, we stopped in at Hood River Organic near the riverside town of Hood River, an organic orchard and farm run by East Coast ex-pat Dan Thall, who gave us a tour of his land. Once the day ended we then headed out to happy hour at Solera Brewery in the imposing shadow of Mount Hood and then into town for a dinner featuring mushroom pizza with mushrooms Dan had grown and recently delivered to the restaurant.

Chelsey, RN, American Traveler: When I first decided to be a travel nurse, so I just started surfing the web, filled out the application online and a consultant contacted me within a day and we took it from there and it was love at first site with American Traveler.
Kelly, Recruiter: I have a lot of travel nurses that are currently working for me all throughout the United States. I have a lot in Arizona, California, Wisconsin. I have one going to Maine, a lot in Florida. We do become very, very close to them. You almost become an extension of their family.

Megan McCormick ventures into the countries on the Arabian Gulf – Kuwait, United Arab Emirates and Oman – an area of ancient of kingdoms that’s synonymous with oil but still one of the most misunderstood areas of the entire world.
Megan’s journey begins in the oil fields of Kuwait where she witnesses the devastation caused by the Iraqi invasion of 1990. As the army retreated under the Allied bombardment, Desert Storm, it set alight to dozens of oil fields causing an environmental catastrophe.
Visiting its capital, Kuwait City, she finds that the superficial scars of the war have healed; in the city’s souks traditional Arab life continues. However, a meeting with a Kuwaiti prisoner of war on the festive Liberation Day (26 February) reveals that there are still hundreds of Kuwaitis who have never been released by the Iraqi regime.
Megan visits the Bergen oil field, half an hour south of the city, to view the production of the world’s most important, yet most vexed, commodity. Her gaze turns from the international to the local when she accepts an invite to stay with a Kuwaiti family in a Bedouin camp in the desert. This is a spring tradition that many Kuwaitis hold dear – although nowadays their tents come with all the mod-cons like electricity and bathrooms!
With a half-hour flight across the deserts of Saudi Arabia, Megan finds herself moving rapidly into the future in Dubai in the United Arab Emirates. She checks into the world’s only seven star hotel, the Burj Al Arab, which dominates the city’s skyline with its dhow sail-like shape. From here she explores the high-tech excitement Dubai has to offer: the Wild Waddy water park and the Palm Sails project – a palm-shaped man-made island offering premier residential and resort living. For a taste of the traditional among the jet-set ambience of this city she visits one of its 34 malls where she tries on the ‘abayya’ veil worn by Muslim women. Two hours along the coast Megan arrives in Abu Dhabi, the country’s capital and the business centre of the Gulf. She visits Women She Zone mall, the world’s first female-only shopping centre, where women can be themselves in this male-dominated society.
With 95 per cent of UAE desert, the inhabitants have found novel ways of incorporating into their lives. Megan tries her hand at golf in the sand but finds that she’s far better-off driving across it in a 4-wheel drive with Offroad Emirates. The company offers tours around the magnificent dunes of the Liwa Oasis on the edge of the aptly named ‘Empty Quarter’ – just a million square miles of sand.
To find out just how rich this country is, Megan goes to meet the nephew of its president, Sheikh Hamed. This flamboyant sheik’s car collection includes a giant custom-made Dodge pickup truck and probably the world’s biggest motor home; each tyre is three metres high, is made of 1.5 tonnes of rubber and costs $16,000!
She travels across the border into Oman and discovers one of the hidden jewels of the Gulf, a country far more immersed in its heritage than its neighbours. She visits the port city Muscat, home to the most authentic souk in the whole of Arabia. Here she wanders through a living embodiment of traditional Islamic life where you can buy abbayas, silver, gold, spices, flowers and much more.
A trip to the Sultan Kabuz Grand Mosque leaves Megan higher than a flying carpet; this monumental building is made of graceful white marble and houses the largest chandelier and carpet in the world.
Leaving the city behind her, Megan tries her hand at cattle shopping in Nizwa before getting out into Oman’s beautiful natural surroundings. She treks down a mountain called Wadi Bani Khalid in the Hajar mountains, an area that sees water year-round – a precious commodity in this desert country – with a guide from Nomadic Explorer. For a further dose of tradition, Megan travels to Sur on the easternmost point of Arabia to watch the dhow ships being built. The builders don’t use plans, instead they do it all by eye and it works! People come here from all over the Gulf to buy a ship.
Then it’s back for a stop at the luxurious Al-Bustan Palace in Muscat for a night of rest before Megan embarks on the final leg of her journey to the south of the country. She flies to the town of Salah, near the Yemeni border, home to the biblical perfume Frankincense. Megan strikes a great bargain in a perfume souk for the divine incense before going to the only place in the world where trees produce this scent. She meets Musalem, one of the lucky few allowed to harvest this precious commodity that has brought wealth to Oman for centuries.
The next day Megan visits Job’s tomb, a local man whose story is revered by Jews, Christians and Muslims alike, before setting off into the desert for a last night with a Bedouin guide.

Along the US191, there is a deviation, and the road begins to climb with a series of switchbacks up to the Visitor Center.
Arches National Park is a 'protected area of the United States that preserves over 2,000 natural sandstone arches, including the world-famous Delicate Arch.
The first viewpoint you meet after the Visitor Center is to Park Avenue. From here you can observe very high red rocks that resemble the skyscrapers of New York, hence the name of Park Avenue.
We move to the next viewpoint, the La Sal Mountain Viewpoint. From here we begin to understand how big the park. Also you can see other rock characteristics conformations
We reach now, one of the most famous attractions of the park, once again it will not be an arc but a curiously shaped rock that seems about to fall off a spike, we are at Balanced Rock.
The total height of Balanced Rock is about 39 meters of which only the rock that rests on the base measures approximately 17 meters. By walking around you can see how the perspective and the effect "fall" changes depending on the angle in which you look.
A few years ago, Balanced Rock had a companion, a lot like rock, but much smaller, unfortunately fell during the winter 1975/1976.
Immediately after the Balanced Rock is the Windows Section where you can see up close the first string.
We head to the North and the South Window and then to Turret Arch.
From the parking lot we see the Double Arch.
From the Fiery Furnace viewpoint we observe this magnificent natural labyrinth between the rocks.
The visit to this site is limited and it takes a ranger as a guide.
As a last stop in Arches National Park we go to the Delicate Arch Viewpoint
Delicate Arch is the symbol of the state of Utah.
We would have preferred to get as close as possible to the arc, instead we observe it from a mile away, seeing him so from a broader perspective and equally spectacular

Russian Military soldiers show off thier military power. The Armed Forces of the Russian Federation (Russian: Вооружённые Си́лы Росси́йской Федера́ции, tr. Vooruzhonnije Síly Rossíyskoj Federátsii) are the military service of the Russian Federation, established after the dissolution of the Soviet Union. On 7 May 1992, Boris Yeltsin signed a presidential decree establishing the Russian Ministry of Defence and placing all Soviet Armed Forces troops on the territory of the Russian SFSR under Russian control.[5] The Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces is the President of Russia. The Russian Armed Forces were formed in 1992.
Armed forces under the Ministry of Defence are divided into:
the three "branches of Armed Forces" (вида вооружённых сил): the Ground Force, Aerospace Forces, and the Navy
the two "separate troop branches" (Отдельные рода войск): the Strategic Missile Troops and the Airborne Troops
the Rear of the Armed Forces, which has a separate status of its own
There are additionally two further "separate troop branches", the National Guard and the Border Service. These are not normally included as branches of the "Armed Forces" but are nonetheless used in armed conflicts.
The number of personnel is specified by decree of the President of Russia. On 1 January 2008, a number of 2,019,629 units, including military of 1,134,800 units, was set.[6] In 2010 the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) estimated that the Russian Armed Forces numbered about 1,027,000 active troops and in the region of 2,035,000 reserves (largely ex-conscripts).[7] As opposed to personnel specified by decree, actual personnel in the forces are paid was reported by the Audit Chamber of Russia as 766,000 in October 2013.[8] As of December 2016, the armed forces are at 93 percent of the required manpower.[9]
According to SIPRI, Russia spent $66.4 billion on arms in 2015.[4] Between the years 2005-2009 and 2010-2014, Russian exports of major weapons increased by 37 percent according to SIPRI.[10] According to the Russian Defense Ministry, share of modern weapons in the Armed Forces reached from 26 to 48% among different kinds of troops in December 2014.[11] This was raised to 30.5–70.7% as of July 2015.[12] Average was 48 per cent over the first half of 2016.[13]

The U.S. Navy traces its origins to the Continental Navy, which was established during the American Revolutionary War and was essentially disbanded as a separate entity shortly thereafter. It played a major role in the American Civil War by blockading the Confederacy and seizing control of its rivers. It played the central role in the World War II defeat of Japan. The 21st century U.S. Navy maintains a sizable global presence, deploying in such areas as East Asia, the Mediterranean, and the Middle East. It is a blue-water navy with the ability to project force onto the littoral regions of the world, engage in forward areas during peacetime, and rapidly respond to regional crises, making it an active player in U.S. foreign and defense policy.
The Navy is administratively managed by the Department of the Navy, which is headed by the civilian Secretary of the Navy. The Department of the Navy is itself a division of the Department of Defense, which is headed by the Secretary of Defense. The Chief of Naval Operations is a four-star admiral and the senior naval officer of the Department of the Navy.[8] However, the CNO may not be the highest ranking naval officer in the armed forces if the Chairman or the Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff are Navy officers, who by law, outrank the CNO.

The maintenance of naval aviation, including land-based naval aviation, air transport essential for naval operations and all air weapons and air techniques involved in the operations and activities of the Navy
The development of aircraft, weapons, tactics, technique, organization, and equipment of naval combat and service elements.
U.S. Navy training manuals state that the mission of the U.S. Armed Forces is "to prepare and conduct prompt and sustained combat operations in support of the national interest."[12] As part of that establishment, the U.S. Navy's functions comprise sea control, power projection and nuclear deterrence, in addition to "sealift" duties.[13]
Organization

There are nine components in the operating forces of the U.S. Navy: the United States Fleet Forces Command (formerly United States Atlantic Fleet), United States Pacific Fleet, United States Naval Forces Central Command, United States Naval Forces Europe, Naval Network Warfare Command, Navy Reserve, United States Naval Special Warfare Command, Operational Test and Evaluation Force, and Military Sealift Command. Fleet Forces Command controls a number of unique capabilities, including Military Sealift Command, Naval Expeditionary Combat Command, and Navy Cyber Forces.
The United States Navy has six active numbered fleets – Third, Fifth, Sixth, Seventh Fleet and Tenth Fleets are each led by a three-star vice admiral,
