Join Cenk Uygur April 11th In Washington D.C. - Democracy Spring
Find out more about the
Democracy Spring here:
http://www.democracyspring.org
Join Cenk Uygur of
The Young Turks on
April 11th. in
Washington DC. The largest civil disobedience action of this century begins.
An equal voice, an equal vote, an equal chance to pursue happiness.
All Americans, no matter where we are from or who we were born to, deserve these basic rights. This is the promise of democracy. But after generations of struggle, a government of, by, and for the
People is still a dream deferred. Billionaires buy our candidates. Corporations dominate our politics.
The right to vote is stripped and suppressed. Our democracy is corrupted. And the change that our families and communities desperately need is blocked. This April, we say enough. This April, we say no more. This April,
We the People will take a stand and demand an equal voice for all. If
Congress won’t act to save our democracy, we will.
It’s time to take back the
People’s House. Spring is coming. Join us.
Democracy Spring
The Democracy Spring
Campaign is a nonpartisan coalition of over
100 organizations and thousands
of individuals and public figures coming together to save our democracy by shining a national spotlight on the urgent crisis of political corruption and inequality, the existence of solutions to it, and the strength of the popular demand to enact them.
Democracy Spring is demanding that Congress take immediate action to end the corruption of big money in politics and ensure free and fair elections that give all
Americans an equal voice.
There are 4 bills that Congress can pass right now to solve this problem. (see below) And now there is a 5th step they can take by confirm a nominee to the
Supreme Court that will uphold voting rights and end the corruption of big money in our politics.
The campaign will start April 2, when a pioneering group of marchers from around the country will gather at the
Liberty Bell in
Philadelphia to issue a simple demand to Congress: take immediate action to end the corruption of big money in politics and ensure our elections are free, fair, and afford every
American an equal voice
.
In the spirit of
Granny D,
Cesar Chavez, the
Selma marchers and others who have fought for equality, the marchers will then set out on a 10 day, 140-mile march from Philadelphia to the nation’s
Capital.
If Congress fails to act by April 11 when marchers arrive in DC, we will be joined by thousands of Americans from across the country in a historic, nonviolent sit-in that will continue until Congress acts or until this becomes the largest civil disobedience action of the century.
More than 2,
500 individuals and counting from around the country, including
Larry Lessig,
Mark Ruffalo,
Zephyr Teachout,
Terry O’Neill and dozens of other civil society leaders, activists and everyday people just like you and me have pledged to risk arrest in massive, peaceful sit-ins at the
US Capitol starting on April 11th.
Representatives of Democracy Spring will engage in peaceful civil disobedience for at least one week after the march arrives in
DC. Day after day, Congress will have a choice: to put hundreds of disciplined, dignified democracy defenders in handcuffs, or simply do its job and fix our broken system.
A drama so unprecedented in the nation’s
Capitol will rock the business-as-usual cycle of this election and catapult this critical issue onto center stage in the middle of a very closely contested
Presidential Primary fight.

These facts might just change your view on Washington DC:
In
1983 the
District of Columbia petitioned to become a state that would be called
New Columbia
Why? One reason is that citizens of the district do not have a voting representative in the national legislature
License plates are emblazoned with the age old phrase "taxation without representation" that the colonies used during the

Washington DC is not a city or a state. It is a special federal district created to be the seat of government
Remember how we said that DC residents don't have voting rights in congress? That's because the district was created as a seat of government and not intended for people to live in (although today more than half a million people call it home)
Ever since 1971 the district has had one representative in the
House of Representatives but he/she doesn't have voting rights.

Capitol Hill Shooting | Capitol Lockdown | Shots Fired at US Capitol Videos
Capitol Hill Shooting |
Capitol Lockdown |
Shots Fired at
US Capitol Videos
Police shot an armed man as tried to enter the US Capitol building's visitor centre in
Washington, officials said.
A female bystander suffered minor injuries when police shot the suspect and she has been taken to hospital.
Officials said the suspect was known to
Capitol police and
ABC News reported that he man had disrupted a
House session last year.
The massive complex was placed on lockdown, but the security precaution has since been lifted.
The Capitol Visitor Center is still closed, but the House and
Senate have reopened for official business only.
Washington's city police called it an "isolated" incident, saying there is "no active threat" to the public.
Officials originally said a police officer had been hurt, but
Capitol Police Chief Matthew Verderosa said no officers were shot.
The gunman was undergoing surgery at a hospital and his condition was unknown, Mr Verderosa said.
US Congress is on recess for the
Easter holiday, but some members of
Congress and staff members were on site.
To enter the US Capitol or any Senate or House office buildings, visitors must go through a metal detector and weapons are not permitted.
Multiple members of Congress have posted to social media, reporting that their staff were safe.
In
1998, an attacker shot and killed two police officers at the Capitol. The visitor centre was built as a way to strengthen security after the shooting.
Many tourists are in Washington for the annual
Cherry Blossom festival - about 1.5 million people visit the city during the four weeks of the festival.
The White House was also put on lockdown temporarily due to a separate incident.

Economic Collapse U S Economic Growth Nearly Stalls Out
WASHINGTON—
The U.S. economy slowed to a crawl at the start of the year as businesses slashed investment, exports tumbled and consumers showed signs of caution, marking a return to the uneven growth that has been a hallmark of the nearly six-year economic expansion.
Gross domestic product, the broadest measure of goods and services produced across the economy, expanded at a 0.2% seasonally adjusted annual rate in the first quarter, the
Commerce Department said Wednesday. The economy advanced at a
2.2% pace in the fourth quarter and 5% in the third.
Economists surveyed by
The Wall Street Journal had expected growth of 1% in the first three months of this year, though many were braced for a surprise to the downside.

Traditional cabbies have no way to buy their own cars, because each D.C. taxi is required to have a special permit, which the city has stopped issuing. So the only way to get a vehicle is to rent one from one of a handful companies in the district that already own large fleets of permitted cabs.
Chelsea, on the other hand, simply drives her own car. Since she doesn't have a top light or a uniform paint job, she affixes a giant pink mustache to her front grate to make her car easy to identify for customers.

Economic Indicators: Anne McCabe Triana
Barring a major unexpected blow to the economy, we think we are mid-to-late cycle of this economic recovery, and the market has more room to go up, however volatility is probably here to stay, says

For long-term investors who can afford volatility, our recommendation would be to think about putting cash to work when we see these dips, McCabe Triana told

Some positive things for the economy are gas prices, given that consumers spend on average 4% of income on energy.
Corporate earnings are still strong, and
Federal Reserves all over the world are keeping interest rates low.

Warren Buffett on Business, Investments, Financial Markets, Economy (2013)
From an article by
The New York Times: "I don't believe in dynastic wealth", he said, calling those who grow up in wealthy circumstances "members of the lucky sperm club". Buffett has written several times of his belief that, in a market economy, the rich earn outsized rewards for their talents:
A market economy creates some lopsided payoffs to participants.
The right endowment of vocal chords, anatomical structure, physical strength, or mental powers can produce enormous piles of claim checks (stocks, bonds, and other forms of capital) on future national output.
Proper selection of ancestors similarly can result in lifetime supplies of such tickets upon birth. If zero real investment returns diverted a bit greater portion of the national output from such stockholders to equally worth

I flew to

Unfortunately, I did not get the upgrade on UA. The

WASHINGTON—
The U.S. economy slowed to a crawl at the start of the year as businesses slashed investment, exports tumbled and consumers showed signs of caution, marking a return to the uneven growth that has been a hallmark of the nearly six-year economic expansion.
The first-quarter figures repeat a common pattern in recent years: one or two strong readings followed by a sharp slowdown. First-quarter
GDP growth had averaged 0.
6% since 2010 and 2.9% for all other quarters. That has worked out to moderate overall expansion but no growth breakout.
“This is another quarterly number which confirms the long-term slow-growth thesis, but there are good odds we get a bit of a bounce later in the year from stabilized business spending and the housing markets, which are setting up quite promising,” Guy LeBas, chief fixed-income strategist at
Janney Montgomery Scott, said in a note to clients.
The latest reading on the economy arrives in the middle of a two-day
Federal Reserve meeting where policy makers will weigh the latest data against plans to start raising short-term interest rates. No action is expected from the Fed on Wednesday, but investors will look for clues on the timing for the first rate increase since
2006 in a policy statement due at 2 p.m.
Eastern time.

Last year, economists pinned much of the blame for a bad first quarter—GDP shrank
2.1%—on unusually harsh weather. This year, multiple factors appear to be at work, including another bout of blizzards, disruptions at
West Coast ports, the stronger dollar’s effect on exports and the impact of cheaper oil.
Better weather, a return to normal at port terminals and steadying investment could boost growth later this year.
“We expect the economy will rebound in [the second quarter] and beyond, similar to last year,” said
Michelle Girard, economist at
RBS Securities.
But not all the factors behind the slowdown appear temporary. A stronger dollar and cheaper oil could persist, keeping exports and energy-sector investment at bay.
As well, rising inventories kept the
U.S. economy out of recession, contributing 0.74 percentage
point to GDP in the first quarter. A second-quarter repeat is unlikely.
Joseph LaVorgna, chief
U.S. economist at
Deutsche Bank, said producers probably will allow inventory positions to run off rather than building them up even more. “This tells us that current-quarter growth is likely to run around 2.5%, not the 4% snapback we had previously been anticipating,” he said.

...
Chelsea Spade, 27, is earning her master's degree in social work, but to make ends meet she's working as a part-time cab driver in
Washington, D.C., through a company called Lyft. But Chelsea isn't like most
D.C. taxi drivers.
Traditional cabbies in D.C. don't only need a permit for their cars, they also need permits for themselves. For years, the city had stopped minting new drivers, but recently it started again. Still, aspiring cabbies need to take a mandatory class and pass a test before they can apply. Chelsea, on the other hand, saw an advertisement for Lyft online. After a few hours of training, she was on the road.
Customers of traditional taxis generally hail them on the street.
Chelsea's customers find her by opening Lyft's mobile app, which allows them to see her car on a tiny map and hire her for a ride.
Lyft, along with its competitors,
Uber and Sidecar, are remaking the taxi business, while kicking to the curb the bevy of useless government rules and licensing requirements that exist in almost all major cities. But politicians and bureaucrats are fighting back against this new model. Washington, D.C. recently proposed new rules that would force Chelsea to obtain a special license to operate, require that she have her car inspected by the city every six months, and allow her to work no more than 20 hours a week. In
Philadelphia, New York City,
Austin, and
Minneapolis, Chelsea's car could be impounded if she were caught driving. In
San Antonio, she might get arrested.
There's no logical case against allowing Lyft, SideCar and Uber to operate freely; the fight is all about protecting the existing taxi cartel. In fact, passengers are safer riding with Chelsea than in a regular cab because traditional taxis don't provide their customers with an easy way for registering complaints. With Lyft, passengers get to rate their experience after every ride, and if drivers get consistently lousy reviews, the company will fire them.
Arun Sundararajan is a professor at
NYU's business school who studies businesses like Lyft, Uber, and Sidecar, which are part of what's been dubbed "the sharing economy." He argues that the customer feedback mechanisms built into these new online platforms makes them largely self-governing.
Another big advantage of sharing economy businesses, says Sundararajan, is that they don't require any upfront investment. "
Models that tap into these assets that already exist, these peer-to-peer models," he says, "will grow a lot more rapidly and have better economic fundamentals than business models that require you to buy assets and deploy them."
These companies are part of yet a larger trend in which new technologies—including online marketplaces,
3D printers, and virtual cryptocurrencies—are cutting out middlemen and allowing individuals to trade goods and services directly with each other. These new business models will remake our economy—that is, unless the government stands in the way.

Barring a major unexpected blow to the economy, we think we are mid-to-late cycle of this economic recovery, and the market has more room to go up, however volatility is probably here to stay, says
Anne McCabe
Triana,
President and
CEO of Curo
Private Wealth.
For long-term investors who can afford volatility, our recommendation would be to think about putting cash to work when we see these dips, McCabe Triana told
Washington Business Report as part of the
Small Business Spotlight.
Some positive things for the economy are gas prices, given that consumers spend on average 4% of income on energy.
Corporate earnings are still strong, and
Federal Reserves all over the world are keeping interest rates low.
As part of a new quarterly segment, McCabe Traina explained that there are five key indicators that have consistently stood the test of time and reliably signaled the increasing fragility of the economy and transition to the late stage of the cycle and oncoming recession:
1. Interest
Rates: Many people believe that bull markets end when the Fed increases interest rates, but historically bull markets end and bear markets begin when the Fed pushes short-term rates above long-term rates. This is referred to as “inverting the yield curve”. Every recession in the past 50 years was preceded by the Fed hiking rates enough to invert the yield curve – 7 out of 7 times.
Current assessment : we are still a ways away from an inverted yield curve
...given where interest rates are today and the outlook of where the Fed expects them to be in the future, it may be 2017 before the Fed potentially inverts the curve, McCabe Triana says.
2.
Index of Leading Economic Indicators (
LEI) : The LEI is comprised of 10 economic indicators and is designed to predict the future path of the economy, with a lead time of between 6-12 months. When the year-over-year rate turns negative and begins to fall, a recession has historically followed by anywhere from 0 to 14 months. Current assessment by McCabe Triana: just released on Thursday, September’s LEI increased .8%, as expected.
3.
Stock Valuations: (
S&P500; Trailing Price-to-Earnings Ratio (PE)) – While stock market valuations are a bad market-timing indicator, they do tell you when the market has become fully valued and is more vulnerable to deterioration in the economic cycle. Long-term average since
1927 is 15. Since
WWII, every bull market has ended with a PE of 17-18, with the exception of the bull market of
2000, which peaked much higher. McCabe Triana’s current assessment is that this was the one indicator that was a bit “hot”, but with the recent pull back has come down. Current PE is 18.9 as of Thursday.
4.
Market Breadth: Market Breadth is the practice of tracking how “broad” the stock market advance is. The more concentrated the advancement, the more vulnerable to a decline. McCabe Triana is confident that the rally is still quite broad.
5.
Institute for Supply Management (
ISM)
Purchasing Managers’ Index: This is a great indicator of the future direction of earnings, she says. The ISM is an association of purchasing and supply management professionals, who are surveyed every month on their buying plans/practices. A peak in the ISM suggests profits may peak six months later and offers an early warning
sign of a bear market and recession. ISM expanded in September for the
16th consecutive month.

If zero real investment returns diverted a bit greater portion of the national output from such stockholders to equally worthy and hardworking citizens lacking jackpot-producing talents, it would seem unlikely to pose such an insult to an equitable world as to risk
Divine Intervention.[121]
His children will not inherit a significant proportion of his wealth. This is consistent with statements he has made in the past indicating his opposition to the transfer of great fortunes from one generation to the next.[122] Buffett once commented, "I want to give my kids just enough so that they would feel that they could do anything, but not so much that they would feel like doing nothing".[
123]
In June
2006, he announced a plan to give away his fortune to charity, with 83% of it going to the
Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.[124] He pledged about the equivalent of
10 million Berkshire Hathaway Class B shares to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (worth approximately
US$30.7 billion as of June 23, 2006),[125] making it the largest charitable donation in history, and Buffett one of the leaders of philanthrocapitalism.[126] The foundation will receive 5% of the total each July, beginning in 2006. (Significantly, however, the pledge is conditional upon the foundation's giving away each year, beginning in 2009, an amount that is at least equal to the value of the entire previous year's gift from Buffett, in addition to 5% of the foundation's net assets.) Buffett joined the
Gates Foundation's board, although he did not plan to be actively involved in the foundation's investments.[
127][128]
This is a significant shift from Buffett's previous statements, to the effect that most of his fortune would pass to his
Buffett Foundation.[129] The bulk of the estate of his wife, valued at $2.6 billion, went to there when she died in 2004.[130] He also pledged $50-million to the
Nuclear Threat Initiative, in
Washington, where he began serving as an adviser in
2002.[131]
In 2006, he auctioned his
2001 Lincoln Town Car[132] on eBay to raise money for
Girls, Inc.[133] In
2007, he auctioned a luncheon with himself that raised a final bid of $650,
100 for the
Glide Foundation.[134]
Later auctions raised $2,
110,100,[135][136] $1.68 million[
137] and $3,
456,
789. The winners traditionally dine with Buffett at
New York's Smith and Wollensky steak house.
The restaurant donates at least $10,
000 to
Glide each year to host the meal.[138]
In a letter to
Fortune Magazine's website in
2010 Buffett remarked:
My luck was accentuated by my living in a market system that sometimes produces distorted results, though overall it serves our country well
... I've worked in an economy that rewards someone who saves the lives of others on a battlefield with a medal, rewards a great teacher with thank-you notes from parents, but rewards those who can detect the mispricing of securities with sums reaching into the billions. In short, fate's distribution of long straws is wildly capricious.
[139]
This statement was made as part of a joint proposal with
Gates to encourage other wealthy individuals to pool parts of their fortunes for charitable purposes.
On
December 9, 2010, Buffett,
Bill Gates, and
Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, signed a promise they called the "Gates-Buffett
Giving Pledge", in which they promised to donate to charity at least half of their wealth over time, and invited others among the wealthy to follow suit.

USA: WASHINGTON: ALAN GREENSPAN ECONOMY SPEECH
English/Nat
U-S Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan said on Tuesday the economy surpassed expectations in
1996, but warned the good news on inflation may be ending as low unemployment leads to rising wage demands.
In his first testimony to
Congress on the state of the economy in six months, Greenspan gave a generally upbeat assessment of recent developments.
It was the first time in six months that Alan Greenspan - the U-S
Federal Reserve Chairman - has made a statement to the Congress on the economy.
He gave the
Senate Budget Committee a generally upbeat assessment of the state of the U-S economy on Tuesday.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"I think it's certainly fair to say that the overall performance of the
American economy has continued to surpass most forecasters' expectations. The current cyclical upswing is now approaching six years in duration, and the economy has retained considerable vigor, with few signs of imbalances and inflationary tensions that have disrupted past expansions."
SUPER CAPTION: Alan Greenspan, Federal Reserve Chairman
Greenspan faced questions from senators to explain his December comment about "irrational exuberance" that sent financial markets tumbling around the world
..
Traders initially feared the central bank would begin raising rates to prick a speculative bubble on
Wall Street.
Greenspan said the remark was an attempt to explain that the central bank had to look at a variety of things including financial market developments in setting interest rate policies.
The Federal chief let it be known the
Central Bank is watching out for inflationary pressures spawned by the low unemployment rate.
The number of unemployed is at 5.3 percent - the lowest its been for seven years.
But he emphasized there is no
sign of such pressures in the current recovery, unlike that of the
1980s, when tighter job markets did trigger higher wage and inflation pressures.
SOUNDBITE: (
English)
"In contrast to that earlier period, we have not experienced a broad increase in inflation. In fact, by some important measures of price trends, inflation actually slowed a bit in 1996."
SUPER CAPTION: Alan Greenspan, Federal Reserve Chairman
Greenspan noted that the
Federal Reserve Bank, whose primary mission is to keep inflation at bay, must set a forward-looking policy.
SOUNDBITE: (
Germany)
"The question is, of course, where do we go from here? Can we achieve significant gains in real activity while avoiding inflationary excesses? Because monetary policy works with a lag, it is not the conditions prevailing today that are critical, but rather those likely to prevail 6 to 12 months, or even longer, from now."
SUPER CAPTION: Alan Greenspan, Federal Reserve Chairman
He said that widespread job insecurities have kept wage pressures down even though labour markets are tight.
SOUNDBITE: (Germany)
"Suppressed wage-cost growth as a consequence of job insecurity can be carried only so far. At some
point in the future, the trade off of subdued wage growth for job security has to come to an end."
SUPER CAPTION: Alan Greenspan, Federal Reserve Chairman
Some economists viewed Greenspan's comments as a clear signal that the
Federal Reserve's next move will be to tighten interest rates, a development that would send up borrowing costs for millions of consumers and businesses.

UW Uses Microsoft Dynamics CRM to Stay Connected with Students from Enrollment Through Graduation
From the time prospective students show interest in a
Continuing Education (CE) program at the
University of Washington to the time they decide to enroll is typically 6 to
18 months. The university needed a way to track interactions with students from the earliest stage.
Clark C.
Westmoreland,
Assistant Vice Provost of
Professional and Continuing Education at the University of Washington, explains, "We were dropping a catalogue on their doorstep once a year with the hopes they would enroll." After implementing
Microsoft Dynamics CRM, the university can profile students' informational needs, deliver what they're interested in, maintain an ongoing relationship with them, and ultimately track student outcomes through graduation and beyond.

A panel discussion featuring authors
Sarah Knopp &
Jesse Hagopian.
A conservative consensus dominates the discussion about what's wrong with our schools and how to fix them: scapegoat teachers, vilify our unions, and promise more private control and m
...arket solutions. In each case, students lose—especially students of color and the children of the working class and the poor.
Education and
Capitalism, written by teacher activists, speaks back to that elite consensus. It draws on the ideas and experiences of social justice educators concerned with fighting against racism and working for equality—of activists trying to recapture the radical roots of the labor movement. Informed by a revolutionary vision of pedagogy, schools, and education, the book offers a radical critique of education in
Corporate America, and contributes to a vision of education for liberation.

A panel discussion featuring authors

A conservative consensus dominates the discussion about what's wrong with our schools and how to fix them: scapegoat teachers, vilify our unions, and promise more private control and m
...arket solutions. In each case, students lose—especially students of color and the children of the working class and the poor.
