Has anyone seen 'A Cure for Wellness' (2017)?

Wow, this movie! This was absolutely AMAZING! Visually gorgeous with chilling atmosphere. I thought it was really well done and written. The story was definitely strange and creepy, but I really like the way is it. I also love the twist ending. I loved set design, it was seriously wonderful. The cinematography was one of the better things of the movie, it was just so good. I thought Dane DeHaan did a good job, but Mia Goth was absolutely fantastic in it. It sucks it got a lot of negative reviews, but it's an excellent film and it will make you feel like you are watching Shutter Island with a young version of Leo. This movie is perhaps one of the most underrated films of 2017 so far. I'd give it a 9.5 out of 10.

[A Cure For Wellness] is actually about paranoid schizophrenia

In the ending, as Lockhart's cycling away from the castle, he smiles wide, showing all of his teeth. How is that possible, if he had two teeth pulled out? If the final shot is true, then Lockhart's perception of losing his teeth cannot be trusted. And if his perception is unreliable there, what else can't be trusted?

Lockhart first witnesses the eels inside the sensory deprivation tank, which are known to cause hallucinations. Usually after several hours, Lockhart saw the eels within minutes. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sensory_deprivation)

Lockhart's father killed himself in front of his own son when he was five. His Mom idolizes her dead husband and Lockhart doesn't relate to her. Lockhart works in a cutthroat corporate culture that gave the guy from the prologue a heart attack, sent Pembroke running for the hills/Swiss Alps, and drove his own father to suicide. Lockhart clearly has a ton of unprocessed psychological issues, issues that would come to the surface the moment he entered a therapeutic program, and was cut off from his primary coping mechanisms: work and smoking. With nowhere to funnel his excess trauma and anger, Lockhart projects his issues onto his caretakers, developing delusions of persecution, abetted by the facility's unconventional treatment methods (the sensory deprivation tank) amplifying his visual hallucinations. He feels his anger towards his father, really feels it, for the first time. But instead of feeling that anger for his own father, he projects it onto the nearest father figure: his doctor. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transference)

Volmer even diagnoses Lockhart with unchecked guilt over the death of his father. For a incestuous rapist immortal murderer, that's a pretty astute observation. It's almost like he's a trained psychologist. And in order for Lockhart to move past his guilt, to accept that he wasn't responsible for his father's death, he'd begin to accept that his father is responsible. Lockhart's guilt turns to anger, anger at his father for abandoning him, for being a bad father. Isn't it odd how Lockhart spends the rest of the film fighting what turns out to be a horrible father figure?

Don't get me wrong. The Gothic Horror backstory is very convincing, and the film has no definite signaling for "this scene is real" and "this scene is not real". But why would Verbinski spend so much time developing Lockhart and his company and his traumatic backstory before we ever get to Volmer's wellness center, if it didn't provide context on the events that follow? Why does Lockhart's boss, upon seeing the burning wellness center, say "Lockhart, what have you done?" if Verbinski didn't want us to think of the burning wellness center as a bad thing?

"Once you eliminate the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth." What's more probable?

A traumatized everyman stumbles upon a science fiction conspiracy, ultimately centered around an immortal incestuous rapist father, and it all just happens to parallel his own personal issues.

Or

An undiagnosed paranoid schizophrenic, who really really needs therapy, resists his treatment, develops a huge delusion of persecution, and ultimately burns the whole place down.

After seeing "A Cure for Wellness" and seeing the criticism for it I am forced to wonder if people payed attention to the plot.

A Cure for Wellness is one of the most clever films I've seen with one of the most intriguing plots I've seen in a film. The way it was presented to the audience was also a masterful style and managed to inform the audience of everything they needed to know without explicitly spelling it out. I left that film awed at the style of it and the brilliant execution of it's mystery and how everything worked to put us inside Lockhart's mindset.

Then I went to look for what other people thought and found everyone seemed confused about stuff explicitly stated in the film. I literally don't think the film could be clearer to the audience beyond spoon feeding them with the information and this removing the entire mystery aspect of the film.

Volmer and Hannah's origins and plans are the core of the film and revealed at the end of the film in a way that is very clear. Yet this seems to throw most people off about the film while it reiterates to us multiple times the motivation of Volmer. The story of the Baron is consistently stated and repeated for us (with slight variations in fairness but never enough to confuse the core of the story) throughout the film. It is easily the most repeated part of the entire film. We are told his motivation at the very start, he was a dude obessed with bloodlines and so concluded the only "pure" person he could marry is his sister. Then his sister died and all that was left was his daughter who survived. As the film goes on we learn more and more specifics of the tale which slowly makes it more and more clear that Volmer knew the secret to age slowly and that Volmer and Hannah are the two characters in the tale. This is only confirmed at the end of the film yet is easily able to be concluded at about the half way point. It is the most obvious explaination given to us to explain Volmer.

At the end we learn that the entire movie also has been a repeat of what happened 200 years ago. All the events of the story are just a repitition of this oft repeated tale.

  • The Baron wants a cure for the human condition and kidnaps peasants for his experiments. (Volmer runs the facility with willing subjects now after learning from the last time.)

  • The Baron wants to keep his bloodline pure and so marries his sister the Baroness. (Volmer now marries his daughter wanting to still keep his bloodline pure.)

  • A group of peasants arrive and rebels. (Lockhart arrives and is stuck at the facility. He rebels against Volmer and his system.)

  • The church is burned down, the Baroness dies, The Baron is attacked, his daughter survives and the peasants leave victorius. (The facility burns to the ground, the painting of the Baroness and all old keepsakes are burned and gone, The Baron is attacked at literally the exact same place on his head and killed, the daughter survives and escapes and Lockhart leaves as well victorius.)

Bar spoon feeding the audience and having the tale be repeated literally during these events I'm at a loss as to how to make this clearer to the audience.

People seem confused with all the hallucinations and such but it's literally told to us by Lockhart. Volmer is making everyone sick. Hence why all the hallucinations all involve water somehow. (The steam room, the sensory tanks, the toilet, the bath etc.) It is the stuff in the water causing these visions and hallucinations to take place for Lockhart. He even tells us that Volmer is trying to convince him and the others they are crazy. We are literally told this in the film.

Basically everything that happens in the film is told to us. All the movie does is not reveal everything at once and reveals bits and pieces throughout. Yet people seem lost and I am at a loss as to how.

A Cure For Wellness

SPOILERS: I watched this last night and it has really stuck with me. It has a great sense of unease to it. My favorite aspect is how otherworldly they made the castle feel and although the film takes place in the modern world, when the modern world creeps back into the movie, it feels quite unnatural. I understand peoples’ issues with it though, it’s a very long film, maybe too long, but it certainly does need to be over 2 hours to establish the tone and atmosphere. I don’t really get why Hollywood has been so keen on making Dane DeHaan a leading man. He’s made to be a character actor. Ultimately the way the plot winds down isn’t exactly mind blowing. I was hoping for a more ambiguous ending, something that really amped up the wackiness of the castle instead of the standard thriller plot twist. It’s still a very solid 3/5 for me and all horror fans should definitely give it a chance.

I’m composer Benjamin Wallfisch - I recently wrote the score for Gore Verbinski’s mind-bending psychological thriller ‘A Cure For Wellness’. AMA!

Hi Reddit! I write music for movies, TV shows, and live concerts and am grateful to have been recently nominated for a Golden Globe for the ‘Hidden Figures’ score, alongside legends Pharrell Williams and Hans Zimmer. I’m currently working on my 60th movie, ‘Annabelle 2’ for New Line/Warner Bros., having just finished scoring Gore Verbinski’s ‘A Cure For Wellness’ for New Regency and 20th Century Fox.

I graduated from London's Royal Academy of Music in 2002, and composed my first film score two years later for Lars von Trier and Thomas Vinterberg's ‘Dear Wendy’, followed by Rupert Wyatt’s debut picture ‘The Escapist’. Over the next few years years I immersed myself in orchestral concert music, conducting orchestras around the world, while frequently collaborating with composer Dario Marianelli. Dario and I worked on over 20 movie scores together, including the Oscar winning score for ‘Atonement’.

Since moving to LA in 2012, I've worked on projects such as Eric Heisserer's 'Hours', Avi Arad's feature animation 'Air Bound', David F. Sandberg's 'Lights Out' among others. I'm fortunate to have been invited by my friend and mentor Hans Zimmer to collaborate with him on movies such as ’12 Years A Slave’, ‘Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice’, ‘The Little Prince’ and most recently ‘Hidden Figures’. Hans introduced me to visionary director Gore Verbinski and we hit it off - a year later, we are about to unleash ‘A Cure For Wellness’ on the world! A big thank you to the Reddit community for inviting me over for an AMA. www.benjaminwallfisch.com | Twitter | Instagram | Facebook

… it has officially the most disturbing and horrifying scene I have ever seen. When the doctors drilled into Dane DeHaan’s character’s teeth, not only did I physically try to become a part of the upholstery of my chair, but sounds I didn’t know I could produce escaped my mouth – shrieking sounds, sounds I hope I never produce again. So, thank you Mr. Vebrinski, I doubt I will sleep well tonight.

BTW: I really liked it – unsettling, slow brooding and strangely peaceful. It also is the most gorgeously shot movie I’ve seen in a while.

I think A Cure for Wellness is going to bomb

There's a bunch of factors that make me think this.

-It's rated-R horror. That already cuts out a huge horror audience in the high school crowd.

-There's no star power behind it. Gore Verbinski is not a box office draw and none of the actors are well known.

-The marketing for it looks confused. The trailer that has been showing in movie theaters, while pretty, barely explains what the actual movie is about. And while the movie looks very cinematic, R-rated psychological horror is a tough sell to the older crowd who might have been drawn by the cinematic aspects of it.

-The reviews range from mediocre to bad. Now this isn't always a problem for horror, but the young crowd who will eat up anything horror (for example, Bye Bye Man and Rings) is cut off.

-The budget hasn't been released (has been released now, it's 40 million. Thanks Manns15!) but it's likely going to be pretty big, judging from the effects in the trailers and Verbinski's record (see this article: https://filmschoolrejects.com/gore-verbinski-bioshock-and-the-big-budget-horror-film-ad27b00a48f1#.1gpyo030y). I find it pretty doubtful with all of the above that the movie will gross even close to as much as Verbinski's budgets usually come to.

What do you guys think?
