There is hope

[–]jkeller11 283 points284 points  (8 children)

DDP has entered the chat

[–]Die-rector -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Yes that's the joke

[–]powerthrust9000 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The great white hope

[–]ManOnTheMun25 369 points370 points  (22 children)

LMAO this card would have made way more money in Vegas or at MSG

[–]WodanazRuckus 164 points165 points  (16 children)

What? You can’t charge 500$ a ticket in Africa.

[–]EdwardGibbon443 62 points63 points  (14 children)

You couldn't in Cameron, but probably could in South Africa

[–]marco333polo 71 points72 points  (2 children)

R10 000 a ticket is poes fucking expensive for a ticket in South Africa, 99.9999999999999% of people can't afford/never would spend that money to watch the UFC. You could go watch our national rugby team 20 times for that. Hell I could buy season tickets for Western province/Stormers for less than half that.

[–]crumchberries 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Cameron is a name, not a country in Africa.

[–]sushisection 11 points12 points  (2 children)

ali va foreman netted 100 mil in the congo. anything is possible.

[–]ManOnTheMun25 1 point2 points  (0 children)

lol that an interesting comparison. do you really think this would do 50 million PPV sales?

[–]hungfit123 633 points634 points  (68 children)

If it would’ve made them money they would’ve done it

[–]Tantle18 282 points283 points  (37 children)

Yeah this. They would have probably have to do it in Nigeria and there must be not as big of a market of UFC fans as they lead us to believe. The only other country they could probably do is South Africa and that would be a logistical fucking nightmare for fighters trying to make weight. If you’ve ever flown to South Africa….. it’s probably the worst travel experience of my life lol

Edit: also crime. No idea how I didn’t even consider this lol

[–]cloutfather 66 points67 points  (5 children)

22 hour flight from Los Angeles to Johannesburg 💔💔

[–]GreatDario 33 points34 points  (1 child)

Anything above 12 hours I honestly prefer to just find a destination in the middle sleep the night in an airport hotel and bite the extra cost. It's worth it to me. Santiago De Chile-Atlanta-Salt Lake City, 12:30 am flight take off. Probably awake for 50 plus hours in the end, 100% hell on earth

[–]IIDasPterodactyl 16 points17 points  (0 children)

It’s amazing what humans can do nowadays in terms of travel on the flippity flip

[–]David-Clowry 1 point2 points  (2 children)

European flights direct to South Africa are almost none existent, pretty much have to take a 8 hour plus layover in dubai

[–]NotAnExpert6487 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Traveling around Africa is amazingly inefficient. There are so few places you can get a direct flight to.

[–]xdyldo 17 points18 points  (18 children)

Los Angeles to Perth is longer

[–]XecutionerNJ 19 points20 points  (7 children)

But it sells out at high prices. Australia has high average wages.

[–]xdyldo 6 points7 points  (6 children)

Yes and renting the venue and all the ground staff would be a lot cheaper. International events still run successfully in South Africa.

[–]Tantle18 -1 points0 points  (9 children)

Barely. And you’re flying directly to Australia and not a third world country where you need a ton of shots just to enter lol

[–]xdyldo 9 points10 points  (2 children)

A ton of shots? What you talking about, there are no requirements to enter South Africa.

[–]Suspicious_Stone 10 points11 points  (0 children)

He's talking about Nigeria. But you still don't need shots

[–]shooto_style 3 points4 points  (2 children)

Found the American that doesn't have a passport

[–]Tantle18 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m an American that lives in Europe and has been to South Africa many times so yeah def no passport

[–]OkayJuice 6 points7 points  (3 children)

Why is the flight so bad?

[–]Spyk124 3 points4 points  (2 children)

Idk the normal travel route but I’ve been on flights to Kenya where people are then going to South Africa. So 14 hour flight from NY to Kenya. Then 5 hour flight to South Africa. Just rough. Imagine coming from Denver or LA.

[–]NotGlumExamination 7 points8 points  (1 child)

Don’t most of these guys stay on location for a week or two before big oversees fights to acclimate?

[–]in_casino_0ut 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes. Idk why South Africa would be different than fight island, or China or Indonesia. If they show up a day before its because they are a last minute replacement or didn't plan ahead.

[–]Responsible-Delay374 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Nigeria is a valid choice but way too much terrorism if you ask me, Morocco or Rwanda (Kigali specifically) would be a far better choice

[–]koosman007 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I dunno man if a show was done in Cape Town stadium it might get filled. If Dricus fights Izzy jn Cape Town you bet your ass South Africans are gonna haul ass to buy tickets . Plus in the developed areas of Cape Town it’s not as dangerous as one would think around the stadiums. Like you won’t get stabbed or shot.

[–]EntertainmentFit8666 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ghana is pretty nice country also nigeria defenitely has a good city.

[–]SnepbeckSweg 16 points17 points  (8 children)

Yup, businesses famously only know how to make money, never making decisions that go wrong.

OP: “UFC made a mistake”

You: “Uh, it’s not a mistake because they would’ve known it was a mistake and not made the mistake”

No surprise this is upvoted so heavily lol, 5head ass sub

[–]FluidAd6587 11 points12 points  (2 children)

there’s also the fact that dana is still planning on going to africa, and shit with the ufc either takes a week or a decade. it’s the one thing he genuinely wants to do before he retires. he’s been running the ufc with the idea of “world fucking domination” in mind, so his ass wants to go to every continent.

<image>

[–]SnepbeckSweg 7 points8 points  (1 child)

Dana talks.. a LOT. Like a lot, all the time even. Elon is also going to Mars, btw, idk if you heard

[–]panthers1102 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Not that I like him, but outside of the tunnel shit, Elon (or rather his companies) usually do what they set out to do. You don’t get that rich owning companies that fail.

[–]hungfit123 19 points20 points  (4 children)

[–]SnepbeckSweg 6 points7 points  (3 children)

That’s literally you? OP said they fumbled the bag, and you said “um actually no”

[–]hungfit123 14 points15 points  (2 children)

[–]IIDasPterodactyl 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Dude you are torching this man without saying a word

[–]Jealous-Adeptness-16 229 points230 points  (10 children)

South Africa is the only country large and rich enough to have enough people willing to pay $200+ to watch such an event. And even if you do it in South Africa, if you dont have enough South African stars on the card, they probably arent willing to pay those prices anyways. Dricus is probably Africa’s best shot of bringing the UFC to Africa.

[–]FluidAd6587 42 points43 points  (2 children)

cameron saaiman isn’t exactly popular but he can make a crowd go wild (maybe after kicking a guy in the dick five times, but a reaction is a reaction)

[–]eventuallobster 12 points13 points  (1 child)

New UFC venture: Power Dick Kick

[–]marco333polo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

UFC Roshambo!

[–]peanutbutternjams 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Dricus is probably Africa’s best shot of bringing the UFC to Africa.

Don't let Izzy see this lmao

[–]clogan117 -1 points0 points  (4 children)

I would think some of the North African countries that are closer to Europe would have enough wealth. With trade and all of that.

[–]Training_Skill_5309 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Not sure about that. Plus none of these guys are arab.

[–]AbberageRedditor69 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lol no they really don't, I know a lot of people who immigrated here from those countries and the majority of people who live there are definitely poor compared to western countries. They aren't cameroon poor, but they definitely aren't "300 dollars to spare for a UFC ticket" rich, that's a month's wage for the average person in most north African countries. And even then, even in Italy, my country, few people would have hundreds of euro to spare for a single UFC event.

[–]poonjouster -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Rumble in the jungle 2023 would've been dope

[–]Highlight_Numerous 15 points16 points  (2 children)

Talmbout Jon Africa?

[–]OldIllustrator8 112 points113 points  (3 children)

Waiting for the real African king DDP

[–]tentoesdown7 34 points35 points  (2 children)

You’re forgetting about the PFP goat Jon Africa

[–]tacolord417 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Who the hell is Jon Africa?

[–]stevektRED 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Mike Perry forever! 🤴🏿

[–]Merkavelly 66 points67 points  (2 children)

An American, a Chinese, and a French man walk into a bar…

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hahahahaha

[–]AlexJamesCook -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Israel Adesanya went to a bar by himself?

[–]FitResponse414 22 points23 points  (12 children)

The only place that has the infrastructure is south africa, north africa could host it but they have nothing culturally and ethnically to do with subsaharian africa so it would be disrespectful to the fighters who are mostly black

[–]assologist_1312 12 points13 points  (7 children)

South Africa is the only one that makes sense. They've hosted cricket world cups before.

[–]rolfisrolf 9 points10 points  (1 child)

And rugby and soccer and, most important of all, netball.

[–]GreatDario 5 points6 points  (2 children)

Mma is still in its infancy in africa, it doesn't have the fan base to fill a stadium with even 200$ tickets

[–]marco333polo 7 points8 points  (1 child)

To watch South Africa's national rugby team to play New Zealand earlier this year tickets were R350 to R750 so that's like $18 to $40. Honestly don't know many people that would be willing to pay $200 a ticket

[–]Slakingpin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be fair it's the same sort of situation in NZ re ticket prices but they still sell well in that upper end market, they're sort of "exclusive" events

I mean would it be the FIRST ufc event south Africa? Surely that would generate a lot of demand, especially in such a sports proud nation as SA

[–]marco333polo 1 point2 points  (1 child)

One of South Africa's problems is that our biggest indoor arena is 10 000 capacity since the Dome became a used car lot

[–]Aidozer 24 points25 points  (0 children)

<image>

They call him the king of Africa

[–]Yabbadabbadingdong2 63 points64 points  (2 children)

But none of them fight out of Africa though

[–]ragingredditir 61 points62 points  (0 children)

And one of them is technically Chinese

[–]BHDE92 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Marty is from Nebraska

[–]MorseCone 7 points8 points  (1 child)

Well, with two Chinese champions the UFC should be considering UFC China right about now.

[–]Careless_Bother6183 8 points9 points  (2 children)

Africa is a continent… not a country unlike Australia which is both.

[–]GreatDario 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Africa is a Country is a great publication I use to read frequently

[–]LemonDaddy666 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The ufc without doing ufc in Africa :

[–]Fast_Presentation186 30 points31 points  (2 children)

It's mainly a security issue, many parts of Africa are still the wild west with very little laws and the cops are mainly corrupt, and besides, you can't really sell a lot of tickets if there isn't enough money to get out of the people that live in that area South Africa would be their best bet but it's still very corrupt with its legal and police system

[–]howmanyturtlesdeep 33 points34 points  (4 children)

They definitely still can and hopefully will.

[–]cleanAir101Pause 14 points15 points  (1 child)

Dana said in a press conference Africa was in the works for next year

[–]FluidAd6587 2 points3 points  (0 children)

is it stupid to think that would be where they book izzy vs ddp at this point???

[–]PKjepz[S] 21 points22 points  (1 child)

i think they probably will when izzy and ddp fight

[–]Tescovaluebread 17 points18 points  (0 children)

They may go for Shanghai if Izzy calls in a favor with uncle Dana

[–]BatRoyal488 6 points7 points  (1 child)

We the French propose UFC Marseille as a middle ground.

[–]African_Conan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

😂😭😂😭😂

[–]thisismausername 12 points13 points  (3 children)

Remember when they had 3 Mexican Champs and didn't go to Mexico for a card either? Back to back fumbles. You'd think they'd learn from this shit.

[–]AltKite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is that a fumble? Mexican boxing stars fight pretty much exclusively in the USA once they make it big, that's where the money is for them.

[–]besameput0 8 points9 points  (1 child)

I love it when a bunch of internet people who make 5-6 figures talk about how richer people fumbled the bag.

[–]yoyoyowhoisthis 4 points5 points  (5 children)

I think they are still hoping for Adesanya vs DPP in south africa or something

[–]marco333polo 1 point2 points  (4 children)

I don't see where they would hold it, we have two 10 000 capacity indoor arenas, even though I'm not convinced that you would find 10 000 people willing to pay over $200 a ticket

[–]BulgrefOld Man Glover 1 point2 points  (1 child)

It will sell out EASILY, I guarantee it.

[–]Slakingpin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah all these doubters, it's not like the ufc often comes there and these events always draw celebrities and the upper class, there's no way this thing won't sell out a 10000 people arena

[–]thebizkit23 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The UFC wanted it badly, there was just no real infrastructure outside of South Africa.

[–]kboogie82 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Coconut Creek, New Zealand and Paris France.

[–]HPandhollowpoints 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mike perry wasn’t on the card so they couldn’t

[–]Mjaso7414 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Did they though?

[–]fatch0deBoi34 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Besides South Africa, which can’t handle this shit currently, Lagos Nigeria would probably be the next closest city able to sustain such an event.

I have a close friend living in Lagos and based on everything I’ve seen him show me there’s not a fucking chance the UFC would go there.

Beautiful people and people that I love, but people in the general west have no idea what its actually like there and in some of these countries..

[–]chris-np 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Add DDP

[–]EfficientAd3417 1 point2 points  (1 child)

This would’ve been a dumb move… all these fighters can headline on their own , they’d make more money having them main event 3 separate PPVs

[–]clogan117 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Only if Jon Africa is fighting.

[–]RobertJ93 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They made $387m profit in 2022 alone. I think they know what they’re doing.

[–]stonetear2017 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Who’s buying tickets? 💀

[–]DonKingsBarber 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What about Nebraska?

[–]Yodiducallme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like i didn’t miss much

[–]marco333polo 1 point2 points  (1 child)

The problem is where? Egypt, Tunisia and Senegal have the largest indoor arenas at 20 000, 17 000 and 15 000 respectively, Nigeria has a 3000 capacity arena, Cameroon 2008 capacity. Even South Africa only has a 10 000 capacity arenas since the Dome became a used car lot. Also the logistics of making UFC Africa happen are gonna be a nightmare so can't happen on short notoce.

[–]BulgrefOld Man Glover 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Green Point stadium in Cape Town. It has a closed roof and space for 70k. They could easily do it there

[–]jm810112 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Now they can do a card with Jon Africa and DDP

[–]ilikebigbutts442 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It would be difficult, a lot of people would go and a lot would pass on it. How many sporting events can you name that happened in Africa in the last 10 years

[–]GavinAdamson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why do you care about doing an event in Africa so much ?

[–]mpetey123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Does any country in Africa have the want of hosting a UFC event?

[–]Lonely_Ranger19Old Man Glover 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why do people keep saying Africa like it’s a country

[–]IvarTheBone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No offense but… umm, what bag was there to collect?

[–]CaPN_CoOkz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How would they financially benefit from going there?

[–]IsTodayTheSuperBowl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Y’all dummies gonna be so confused when UAE and Saudi Arabia keep pumping money into the PFL and the antitrust lawsuit destroys the ufc in 10 years.

[–]making-scents 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Who would a Chinese fighter want to be on that card?

[–]burner-199 3 points4 points  (4 children)

Dricus is the most African fighter in ufc history

[–]MacsPowerBike 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Jon Africa begs to differ

[–]willywawa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Begs the differ b

[–]Jedi_Sith1812 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think Covid made it a little more difficult to schedule it.

[–]Genova_Witness 1 point2 points  (1 child)

There never was any chance of a UFC Africa. Imagine the logistics and the money they leave on the way side with the gate, think they are charging $700 for nose bleeds in Jo burg or Lagos? Are they going to do a local PPV time so it’s 6am in America or have the main event at 5am local time they have done locally timed shows in the past but they are rare and always cost them in PPV buys. South Africa is in major political pain and wouldn’t be safe enough to host and Nigeria doesn’t have the infrastructure to do so safely.

They may do a fight night one day but the idea that they were ever going to do a major PPV there is silly.

[–]InternationalCan9682 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How about like morroco or egypt

[–]MeTooWasAtrend 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Izzy and Usman aren’t African

[–]flowersermon9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No picture of Mike Perry? Swill.

[–]Training_Stuff7498 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I guarantee it was brought up, thought out, and considered.

If they believed it to be a good business decision, they would have done it.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

UFC Nigeria would have been HUGE!

[–]HomicidalRexThe Eagle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They didn't fumble it cause it would've took until at least 2024 for them to get everyone approved. Francis and usman got injured during their run towards the end and even if Usman and Izzy kept their belts, there we're no good fights left for either of them to sell.

[–]SalemtheKidMusic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Marty from Nebraska, the Chinese dragon, and a French fry.

[–]Ok_Lawfulness_1263 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Missed all thoose trillions of African dollars aka $2.50

[–]alternative_optionz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thumbs up for diversity, 2 African champs and a Chinese one. 👍

[–]auzziesoceroo 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Where would they do it?

It gets tricky to guarantee fighter safety in the middle countries. Even in more stable countries like Kenya. They would have to tell the fighters to stay in the hotel 100% of the time. Nigeria? Forget it. The only fighters who would be safe would have been Izzy and Usman. Their opponents would have needed 24/7 guards. Could you imagine if Colby had fought Usman in Nigeria and had managed to beat him? He would need to go straight to the airport and get on the first flight out of the country.

You can't go north. The only stable country at the top is Egypt and that caused problems with Abu Dhabi. Plus what Izzy, Usman, and Ngannou wanted Nigeria.

You can't go South either. The only country you could consider would be S. Africa and they were in the grips of a political crisis at the time

[–]BulgrefOld Man Glover 1 point2 points  (0 children)

SA is two countries in one though. Yes it’s in turmoil, but you wont feel it in the richer areas like Cape Town, Sandton or Pretoria East. Those are basically 1st world countries surrounded by little war torn shitholes.

[–]Sincityfiend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

DDP would say American, New Zealander, French

[–]quantumhed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I'm sure it was the UFC, and not Africa being Africa

[–]GoHawksMatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol you clearly do not know much about politics in that country, there's not way they'd do that without problems. Things are very corrupt and you think they can just make it happen? Lol 😆

[–]masterpublichealth -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Dricus will win so they’ll get another chance

[–]YoureAnIdiot007 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah I’m sure the gate in Africa would be wayyyyyy more than Las Vegas or MSG

[–]nooblevelum -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

If they do please do it anywhere but South Africa.

[–]Ugaliyajana -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Big time

[–]Such_Line_1199 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

One of them is Chinese

[–]Last-Touch-9217 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Kamaru lost the belt, izzy's chinese/Kiwi and ngannou left to fight fury. Wasn't really fumbled

[–]JyJellyPants-Grape -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Would any of them really wanna go back?? Francis literally walked a desert like 3 times to get away

[–]Moist-Catch -2 points-1 points  (1 child)

Where exactly are they gonna sell out a stadium in Africa

[–]Comprehensive-Cap513 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Why They didn't sell out the arenas in other countries?

[–]Thedrp8 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

  1. You can’t put Francis, who’s only marketable now because he hates Dana, ahead of Izzy or usman.
  2. Francis was barely champion and only fought once.
  3. Usman was hurt during most of Francis’s run

[–]anotherlateJay -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Idk anything about Africa but from what they kept saying, there’s no infrastructure for an event. And supposedly Francis is now working on building the infrastructure with PFL

[–]Fair-Audience-4001 -1 points0 points  (2 children)

Yes indeed! Nigeria is such a great place to have a mega event. Maybe The Republic of Congo, Sudan, Yemen, it just keeps getting better. Chael Sonnen really gave a great description of Brazil, he could describe Africa, too, probably.

[–]happybaby00 1 point2 points  (1 child)

ali and foreman did it in congo which is way poorer why not?

[–]Gold-Temperature237 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Dude butt hurt niggas rule the ufc

[–]GarrettRettig -1 points0 points  (0 children)

DANA.. not the UFC. The Francis fumble should’ve lost him his job under new ownership

[–]Bakedbean44 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Wakka Wakka - Aye Aye

[–]Doctor-Stoppage -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

You still have Elon Musk and DDP, two african warriors
