It’s Finally Done.

It’s nearly impossible to vet most urologists in terms of their skill level at performing vasectomies. Google most of them and the reviews will say whether or not they are a good doctor, but there’s almost nothing about specific procedures. For all I know their patients could be raving about them because of a gallbladder removal.

Dr. Monteith specializes in vasectomy, vasectomy reversal, tubal ligation, and tubal ligation reversal. He is basically a one stop shop for family planning for both men and women. However, each of these procedures are performed in separate locations and set up individually online so you know exactly which procedure you’re reading about. If you want to know about his reputation with vasectomy, then google “His Choice Vasectomy.” You will see he currently has over 600 google reviews and every one of them is five stars, raving about what a good experience it was and how recovery for the vast majority was quick with little to no pain. He also has several videos on his website detailing the process and all the specific techniques he uses. He answers any questions you may have about getting a vasectomy and what to do both before and after. You can also message his office through the website with any questions or concerns regarding your personal situation and they will get back to you shortly with a thoughtful, direct answer.

Contrast that with a typical urologist’s office, where you have no way of telling if the guy handling your nuts has any idea what the fuck he’s doing, he yesses you to death, barely listens to you and rushes you out the door so he can get your money and move on to the next patient because he’s way overbooked, and the staff are a bunch of rude, nasty people who act like you’re bothering them every time you call or visit the office. I consulted with a few of these guys early in my research process, and I left every one of those consultations second guessing my decision to get a vasectomy. Then one day I was chatting with a fellow redditor in the comments section of one of my posts. He highly recommended Dr. Monteith, and his experience would echo what I would go on to read shortly after in all those glowing reviews. Basically, his reputation and professionalism spoke for themselves and, for the first time since I’d started looking, I had finally found a doctor I felt comfortable with. Oh, and he’s also done over 8,000 vasectomies.

I am currently 72 hours out with no pain, swelling or bruising. As mentioned in my post, I am taking the next two weeks off to lay around and relax just to play it safe. I’ve read way too many horror stories about guys who did too much too soon because they felt good at first and ended up regretting it. Obviously I have to keep monitoring recovery over time and there is no telling what the future holds, but so far my Doc has lived up to his reputation. It’s still possible for bruising or discomfort to occur later, but right now it feels like nothing happened.

My advice to you is to stop looking and just go to Dr. Monteith. As far as I’m concerned you’re wasting your time with anyone else.

Has anyone had a vasectomy with a varicocele?

DonKingsBarber
commented

My ultrasound said I had a bilateral hydrocele, bilateral varicocele, and two very small cysts on the right epididymis. Went to a urologist who looked at the images, read the report and gave me a physical examination. He said there was less than a teaspoon of extra fluid in my scrotum, he couldn’t feel a varicocele, and cysts that size are perfectly common. He said my symptoms were “subclinical,” meaning they were so insignificant they didn’t need attention. I asked him if I was clear to get a vasectomy and he said I should be fine. I’m now two and a half days post procedure and feeling no pain or discomfort.

The fact that your doctor is suggesting you have surgery on a varicocele that doesn’t cause you any discomfort sounds a little strange to me. If I were you I would get an ultrasound and a second opinion.

Late period, 2.5 years post vasectomy. Checked swimmers and result unclear

I don’t think you necessarily have to get it done with the same urologist who did the procedure. Just call some urologists in your network/area, explain the situation to them and ask if they need a referral.

I’ve never been in this position so I can’t really speak with too much authority, but I have been practically living on this sub for the past nine months leading up to my vasectomy, and I do recall coming across a few posts/comments regarding men who got a second test done by a doctor because they were worried their vasectomy reversed itself. The details/cost will depend on your location/insurance plan, but I know it can be done. Hope it doesn’t turn out to be too much of a hassle. Good luck.

If he’s that freaked out he should send a semen sample to a urologist and explain the situation. From what I understand, the lab tests doctors do are more comprehensive and reliable than the home test. I’m not 100% sure of that, but you have nothing to lose by giving it a shot.

Newly Snipped

After nine months of planning and anxiety, I finally got it over with. Drove all the way from New Jersey to North Carolina and paid $1250 out of pocket. So far it’s been worth all the money and hassle it has cost me, as I still don’t feel anything 36 hours later and there is no bruising or swelling. Of course these issues (among others) can pop up as recovery progresses, which is why I am taking the next two weeks off work so I can lie around in my jockstrap getting baked and watching baseball.

Thanks to everyone here who replied to my posts and comments, and special thanks to u/j_bob_24 for recommending Dr. Monteith. I’m not sure I would have let anyone else perform this procedure on me. Here’s to a safe and speedy recovery and good luck to everyone recovering or about to get snipped! I’m so glad I did this!

Recovery

This is the smart move. I haven’t worked a labor intensive job in a while, and I’m still taking my full two weeks vacation time for the year. I will spend that time doing absolutely nothing. You definitely don’t want to fuck around with recovery. Doing too much too soon could give him serious issues down the line and possibly affect your sex life. I understand he probably wants to just get it over with like the rest of us, but it’s better to wait until the time is right.

I Just Got a Vasectomy

I won’t be lifting anything much heavier than a fork for the next two weeks. I stocked enough food, drinks, weed and edibles that I can be a complete lazy sack of shit until I go back to work early next month. Laundry is done, sheets are changed and apartment is spotless. I basically set it up so I barely have to move for several days.

I Just Got a Vasectomy

DonKingsBarber
replied to MsSamm

Better doctor. Consulted with a few urologists in my area and was not happy with their methods or levels of experience. A fellow redditor recommended me a specialist with over 8,000 vasectomies under his belt who used the exact method I wanted. I drove eight hours from New Jersey to North Carolina and paid $1250 out of pocket and I am glad I did. Currently six hours post op and I still feel almost nothing. I can only hope the rest of my recovery goes this smoothly.
