Who or what is the 'real me'?
There is nothing more important than knowing this.
Indeed, German philosopher Ernst Cassirer (1874-1945)
asserted at the beginning of 'An Essay on Man':
"That self-knowledge is the highest aim
of philosophical inquiry appears to be generally acknowledged.
... This objective... [has] proved to be the Archimedean point,
the fixed and immovable center, of all thought."
Leo Tolstoy, widely considered one of the greatest novelists
of all time, spoke of an "eastern fable" on the true image
of human beings that deeply resonated with him in his work
'A Confession', proclaiming of it that
"this is no fable but the truth, the truth
that is irrefutable and intelligible to everyone."
Just what was this "eastern fable" that Tolstoy was talking about?
It was, in fact, Śākyamuni Buddha's
'Parable on the True Nature of Human Existence',
which is explained in this video.
Master Shinran, who is the most famous figure
in Japanese Buddhism,
clarified the true intention of Śākyamuni Buddha.

Arthur Zajonc, PhD
Arthur Zajonc was professor of physics at Amherst College from 1978 to 2012, when he became President of the Mind & Life Institute. He received his B.S. and Ph.D. in physics from the University of Michigan. He has been visiting professor and research scientist at the Ecole Normale Superieure in Paris, the Max Planck Institute for Quantum Optics, and the universities of Rochester, and Hannover. He has been Fulbright professor at the University of Innsbruck in Austria.
Michel Bitbol, PhD
Michel Bitbol is presently Directeur de recherché at the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique, in Paris, France. He is based at the Centre de Recherche en Epistemologie Appliquee (CREA) in Paris He teaches the Philosophy of Modern Physics to graduate students at the University Paris I (Pantheon-Sorbonne). He was educated at several universities in Paris, where he received successively his M.D. in 1980, his Ph.D. in physics and biophysics in 1985, and his "Habilitation" in philosophy in 1997.
Geshe Thupten Jinpa
Geshe Thupten Jinpa is the principal English translator to the Dalai Lama since 1985. He has translated and edited more than ten books by the Dalai Lama including The World of Tibetan Buddhism (Wisdom Publications, 1993), A Good Heart: A Buddhist Perspective on the Teachings of Jesus (Wisdom Publications, 1996), and the New York Times bestseller Ethics for the New Millennium (Riverhead, 1999).
Geshe Thupten Jinpa was born in Tibet in 1958. He received his early education and training as a monk at Zongkar Chöde Monastery in South India and later joined the Shartse College of Ganden monastic university, South India, where he received the Geshe Lharam degree. He taught Buddhist epistemology, metaphysics, Middle Way philosophy and Buddhist psychology at Ganden for five years. Jinpa also holds B.A. Honors degree in Western Philosophy and a Ph.D. degree in Religious Studies, both from Cambridge University, UK.
Over the last several years, largely through the work of the Emory-Tibet Science Initiative, Science for Monks, and Science Meets Dharma, science instruction has been given to a small group of monastic scholars. Very recently, the decision was made to require science education for Geshe degrees at Tibetan monastic universities, and to facilitate all monastic students being introduced to modern science and the profound philosophical and ethical issues raised by science and technology. In recognition of this fact, this conference is taking place at one of the historically important Tibetan academic institutions, Drepung Monastery in Mundgod, India (Mind & Life Institute, 2013).

Ajahn Brahm gave this talk at Simon Fraser University on Thursday November 17, 2005 in Burnaby, near Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Ajahn Brahm was touring in 2005 promoting his new book "Who Ordered This Truckload of Dung?"
Ajahn Brahmavamso Mahathera (known to most as Ajahn Brahm) was born Peter Betts in London, United Kingdom in August 7, 1951. He came from a working-class background, and won a scholarship to study Theoretical Physics at Cambridge University in the late 1960s. At Cambridge he joined the university’s Buddhist Society and after a few weeks at the age of 18, he saw a monk for the first time. He knew then that was what he wanted to be. After graduating from Cambridge he taught in a school for one year before traveling to Thailand to become a monk and train with the Venerable Ajahn Chah.
After practising for nine years as a monk, he was sent to Perth, Australia by Ajahn Chah in 1983. Since 1995 Ajahn Brahm has been the Abbot of Bodhinyana Monastery, in Serpentine, Western Australia and he is the Spiritual Director of the Buddhist Society of Western Australia.

Albert Einstein (
/ˈælbərt ˈaɪnstaɪn/; German: [ˈalbɐt ˈaɪnʃtaɪn] (
listen); 14 March 1879 – 18 April 1955) was a German theoretical physicist who developed the theory of general relativity, effecting a revolution in physics. For this achievement, Einstein is often regarded as the father of modern physics. While best known for his mass–energy equivalence formula E = mc2 (which has been dubbed "the world's most famous equation"), he received the 1921 Nobel Prize in Physics "for his services to theoretical physics, and especially for his discovery of the law of the photoelectric effect". The latter was pivotal in establishing quantum theory within physics.
Near the beginning of his career, Einstein thought that Newtonian mechanics was no longer enough to reconcile the laws of classical mechanics with the laws of the electromagnetic field. This led to the development of his special theory of relativity. He realized, however, that the principle of relativity could also be extended to gravitational fields, and with his subsequent theory of gravitation in 1916, he published a paper on the general theory of relativity. He continued to deal with problems of statistical mechanics and quantum theory, which led to his explanations of particle theory and the motion of molecules. He also investigated the thermal properties of light which laid the foundation of the photon theory of light. In 1917, Einstein applied the general theory of relativity to model the structure of the universe as a whole.

Who or what is the 'real me'? There is nothing more important than knowing this. Indeed, German philosopher Ernst Cassirer (1874-1945) asserted at the beginning of 'An Essay on Man': "That self-knowledge is the highest aim of philosophical inquiry appears to be generally acknowledged. ... This objective... [has] proved to be the Archimedean point, the fixed and immovable center, of all thought." Arthur Zajonc, PhD
Arthur Zajonc was professor of physics at Amherst College from 1978 to 2012, when he became President of the Mind & Life Institute. He received his B.S. and Ph.D. in physics from the University of Michigan. He has been visiting professor and research scientist at the Ecole Normale Superieure in Paris, the Max Planck Institute for Quantum Optics, and the universities of Rochester, and Hannover. He has been Fulbright professor at the University of Innsbruck in Austria.
Michel Bitbol, PhD
Michel Bitbol is presently Directeur de recherché at the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique, in Paris, France. He is based at the Centre de Recherche en Epistemologie Appliquee (CREA) in Paris He teaches the Philosophy of Modern Physics to graduate students at the University Paris I (Pantheon-Sorbonne). He was educated at several universities in Paris, where he received successively his M.D. in 1980, his Ph.D. in physics and biophysics in 1985, and his "Habilitation" in philosophy in 1997.
Geshe Thupten Jinpa
Geshe Thupten Jinpa is the principal English translator to the Dalai Lama since 1985. He has translated and edited more than ten books by the Dalai Lama including The World of Tibetan Buddhism (Wisdom Publications, 1993), A Good Heart: A Buddhist Perspective on the Teachings of Jesus (Wisdom Publications, 1996), and the New York Times bestseller Ethics for the New Millennium (Riverhead, 1999).
Geshe Thupten Jinpa was born in Tibet in 1958. He received his early education and training as a monk at Zongkar Chöde Monastery in South India and later joined the Shartse College of Ganden monastic university, South India, where he received the Geshe Lharam degree. He taught Buddhist epistemology, metaphysics, Middle Way philosophy and Buddhist psychology at Ganden for five years. Jinpa also holds B.A. Honors degree in Western Philosophy and a Ph.D. degree in Religious Studies, both from Cambridge University, UK.
Over the last several years, largely through the work of the Emory-Tibet Science Initiative, Science for Monks, and Science Meets Dharma, science instruction has been given to a small group of monastic scholars. Very recently, the decision was made to require science education for Geshe degrees at Tibetan monastic universities, and to facilitate all monastic students being introduced to modern science and the profound philosophical and ethical issues raised by science and technology. In recognition of this fact, this conference is taking place at one of the historically important Tibetan academic institutions, Drepung Monastery in Mundgod, India (Mind & Life Institute, 2013).

Ajahn Brahm gave this talk at Simon Fraser University on Thursday November 17, 2005 in Burnaby, near Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Ajahn Brahm was touring in 2005 promoting his new book "Who Ordered This Truckload of Dung?"
Ajahn Brahmavamso Mahathera (known to most as Ajahn Brahm) was born Peter Betts in London, United Kingdom in August 7, 1951. He came from a working-class background, and won a scholarship to study Theoretical Physics at Cambridge University in the late 1960s. At Cambridge he joined the university’s Buddhist Society and after a few weeks at the age of 18, he saw a monk for the first time. He knew then that was what he wanted to be. After graduating from Cambridge he taught in a school for one year before traveling to Thailand to become a monk and train with the Venerable Ajahn Chah.
After practising for nine years as a monk, he was sent to Perth, Australia by Ajahn Chah in 1983. Since 1995 Ajahn Brahm has been the Abbot of Bodhinyana Monastery, in Serpentine, Western Australia and he is the Spiritual Director of the Buddhist Society of Western Australia.

Arthur Zajonc, PhD
Arthur Zajonc was professor of physics at Amherst College from 1978 to 2012, when he became President of the Mind & Life Institute. He received his B.S. and Ph.D. in physics from the University of Michigan. He has been visiting professor and research scientist at the Ecole Normale Superieure in Paris, the Max Planck Institute for Quantum Optics, and the universities of Rochester, and Hannover. He has been Fulbright professor at the University of Innsbruck in Austria.
Michel Bitbol, PhD
Michel Bitbol is presently Directeur de recherché at the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique, in Paris, France. He is based at the Centre de Recherche en Epistemologie Appliquee (CREA) in Paris He teaches the Philosophy of Modern Physics to graduate students at the University Paris I (Pantheon-Sorbonne). He was educated at several universities in Paris, where he received successively his M.D. in 1980, his Ph.D. in physics and biophysics in 1985, and his "Habilitation" in philosophy in 1997.
Geshe Thupten Jinpa
Geshe Thupten Jinpa is the principal English translator to the Dalai Lama since 1985. He has translated and edited more than ten books by the Dalai Lama including The World of Tibetan Buddhism (Wisdom Publications, 1993), A Good Heart: A Buddhist Perspective on the Teachings of Jesus (Wisdom Publications, 1996), and the New York Times bestseller Ethics for the New Millennium (Riverhead, 1999).
Geshe Thupten Jinpa was born in Tibet in 1958. He received his early education and training as a monk at Zongkar Chöde Monastery in South India and later joined the Shartse College of Ganden monastic university, South India, where he received the Geshe Lharam degree. He taught Buddhist epistemology, metaphysics, Middle Way philosophy and Buddhist psychology at Ganden for five years. Jinpa also holds B.A. Honors degree in Western Philosophy and a Ph.D. degree in Religious Studies, both from Cambridge University, UK.
Over the last several years, largely through the work of the Emory-Tibet Science Initiative, Science for Monks, and Science Meets Dharma, science instruction has been given to a small group of monastic scholars. Very recently, the decision was made to require science education for Geshe degrees at Tibetan monastic universities, and to facilitate all monastic students being introduced to modern science and the profound philosophical and ethical issues raised by science and technology. In recognition of this fact, this conference is taking place at one of the historically important Tibetan academic institutions, Drepung Monastery in Mundgod, India (Mind & Life Institute, 2013).

Arthur Zajonc, PhD
Arthur Zajonc was professor of physics at Amherst College from 1978 to 2012, when he became President of the Mind & Life Institute. He received his B.S. and Ph.D. in physics from the University of Michigan. He has been visiting professor and research scientist at the Ecole Normale Superieure in Paris, the Max Planck Institute for Quantum Optics, and the universities of Rochester, and Hannover. He has been Fulbright professor at the University of Innsbruck in Austria.
Michel Bitbol, PhD
Michel Bitbol is presently Directeur de recherché at the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique, in Paris, France. He is based at the Centre de Recherche en Epistemologie Appliquee (CREA) in Paris He teaches the Philosophy of Modern Physics to graduate students at the University Paris I (Pantheon-Sorbonne). He was educated at several universities in Paris, where he received successively his M.D. in 1980, his Ph.D. in physics and biophysics in 1985, and his "Habilitation" in philosophy in 1997.
Geshe Thupten Jinpa
Geshe Thupten Jinpa is the principal English translator to the Dalai Lama since 1985. He has translated and edited more than ten books by the Dalai Lama including The World of Tibetan Buddhism (Wisdom Publications, 1993), A Good Heart: A Buddhist Perspective on the Teachings of Jesus (Wisdom Publications, 1996), and the New York Times bestseller Ethics for the New Millennium (Riverhead, 1999).
Geshe Thupten Jinpa was born in Tibet in 1958. He received his early education and training as a monk at Zongkar Chöde Monastery in South India and later joined the Shartse College of Ganden monastic university, South India, where he received the Geshe Lharam degree. He taught Buddhist epistemology, metaphysics, Middle Way philosophy and Buddhist psychology at Ganden for five years. Jinpa also holds B.A. Honors degree in Western Philosophy and a Ph.D. degree in Religious Studies, both from Cambridge University, UK.

A native of England, Alan Watts attended the King's School near Canterbury Cathedral, and at the age of fourteen he became fascinated with the philosophies of the Far East. By sixteen he regularly attended the Buddhist Lodge in London, where he met Zen scholars Christmas Humphries and D. T. Suzuki. As a speaker and contributor to the Lodge's journal, The Middle Way, he wrote a series of philosophical commentaries and published his first book on Eastern thought, The Spirit of Zen, at age twenty-one.
In the late thirties he moved to New York, and a few years later he became an Episcopalian priest. In 1942 he moved to Illinois and spent the wartime years as chaplain at Northwestern University.
Then, in 1950, he left the Church, and his life took a turn away from organized religion back toward Eastern ways and expanding horizons. After meeting author and mythologist Joseph Campbell and composer John Cage in New York he headed to California and began teaching at the American Academy of Asian Studies in San Francisco. There his popular lectures spilled over into coffeehouse talks and appearances with the well-known beat writers Gary Snyder, Jack Kerouac, and Allen Ginsberg. In late 1953 he began what would become the longest running series of Sunday morning public radio talks, which continue to this day with programs from the Alan Watts tape archives. In 1957 he published the bestselling The Way of Zen, beginning a prolific ten-year period in which he wrote Nature, Man and Woman; Beat Zen, Square Zen and Zen; This Is It; Psychotherapy East and West; The Two Hands of God; The Joyous Cosmology; and The Book: On the Taboo against Knowing Who You Are.
By 1960 Watts's radio series Way Beyond the West on Berkeley's KPFA had an avid following on the West Coast, and NET television began national broadcasts of the series Eastern Wisdom in Modern Life. The first season, recorded in the studios of KQED, a San Francisco television station, focused on the relevance of Buddhism, and the second, on Zen and the arts.

The wisdom of emptiness is the ultimate teaching in Buddhism; its main tenet is that our suffering is caused by our inability to perceive the true nature of reality.
These teachings on emptiness are very subtle, profound and deeply transforming, Yet with correct understanding, we can shift our experience of the world.
In this course, we'll begin to explore these ideas through meditation, understanding the process of attaining the wisdom understanding emptiness and practice some of the purification techniques to clear the obstacles to realization of emptiness.
Emptiness
Emptiness is a key concept in Buddhist philosophy, or more precisely, in the ontology of Mahayana Buddhism. The phrase "form is emptiness; emptiness is form" is perhaps the most celebrated paradox associated with Buddhist philosophy. It is the supreme mantra. The expression originates from the Prajna Paramita Hridaya Sutra, commonly known as the Heart Sutra, which contains the philosophical essence of about six hundred scrolls making up the Maha Prajna Paramita. The Heart Sutra is the shortest text in this collection. It belongs to the oldest Mahayana texts and presumably originated in India around the time of Jesus Christ.
Emptiness of emptiness.
In The Art of Living (2001) the 14th Dalai Lama says, "As your insight into the ultimate nature of reality is deepened and enhanced, you will develop a perception of reality from which you will perceive phenomena and events as sort of illusory, illusion-like, and this mode of perceiving reality will permeate all your interactions with reality. [...] Even emptiness itself, which is seen as the ultimate nature of reality, is not absolute, nor does it exist independently. We cannot conceive of emptiness as independent of a basis of phenomena, because when we examine the nature of reality, we find that it is empty of inherent existence. Then if we are to take that emptiness itself is an object and look for its essence, again we will find that it is empty of inherent existence. Therefore the Buddha taught the emptiness of emptiness."
