Turn your brain off action RPG?

Looking for a sort of hack and slash third person game where I can just turn my brain off.

Not really been playing games for story lately and just wanting some fun combat / movement to enjoy while I listen to podcasts in the background.

Thanks!

My review after finishing: Hogwarts Legacy is a fabulous magic action RPG, and an abysmal Hogwarts student experience
false

After a few missions, I realised I am not an actual student at Hogwarts. Clearly I am a Ministry of Magic Auror sent undercover to Hogwarts to deal with the rising goblin rebellion in the area.

This is the only sensible explanation for why I am, an apparent young student, happily killing hundreds of people while flogging off the classes I assume I should normally be attending. Some of these people are only mere poachers, doing nothing but engaging in an activity I do myself on the side, presumably to make up for the underpaid government salaries. Killing them removes competition I suppose.

This is the only sensible explanation for why the professors spend their class time teaching me child-appropriate spells such as "set off a bomb at the flick of a wand", or "say this word to easily cut someone in half".

Eventually learning the Unforgivable spells seemed like a natural (and nicer) tool in my belt for the chosen one sociopathic killer I clearly am.

The developers have devoted a huge amount of love and attention to developing an absurdly fun combat system (albeit I wouldn't mind some even more creative ways of defeating foes). This devotion is only surpassed by the world design - possiby the best in any RPG game I have seen. Hogwarts itself feels very real, with transitions from interior to exterior being relatively seemless, and a 1-1 mapping of what you see on the outside to what you can explore on the inside. This is further shown in places like the Forbidden Forest. A dark and gloomy place that really feels like there is danger around the corner. Fortunately, the player isn't locked into a "forest level", and can return to the safety of the countryside by doing something very natural - just flying up, beyond the canopy.

These details are brilliantly done, and exploring Hogwarts is a treat. Although it can be let down by some shortcomings of immersion. Such things as students not sleeping in their beds, or the audio ambience being strangely quiet, despite surrounded by hundreds of students in the great hall.

But as the story went on, I had less and less reason to be in the castle, and my desire to live a year as a Hogwarts student was going unfulfilled. Classes meant very little, interactions with other students were minimal, and the dialog for missions were sometimes very strained, as they tried to justify why a student would be doing the kinds of things the game encourages you to do.

Avalanche Software has built such a fabulous Hogwarts, and it would be a shame to let it be used for nothing but a background for countryside wizard duels. I want to compete for the house cup, I want to face the dilemma of learning in class, or learning by exploring. I want to have a choice in which friends and enemies I make, and which teachers I want to bootlick. Skimming the subreddit shows there is a big demand for student immersion, and I'm sure a huge swath of people would snap up a properly done school sim in an instance.

EDIT: I kind of regret using the word "sim". I used it because that's what I would personally enjoy. But the options aren't really between what we have now and a full blown sim. Any improvement, no matter how small, in immersion and focus on Hogwarts life I'm sure would be greatly appreciated by many people.

Wu Tang Clan Action RPG details.

The gameplay evolves around fast-paced melee combat in third-person, with a strong focus on having both music and combat intertwined. Players can choose from four different weapons that all have different and unique playstyles (single swords, dual swords, etc.). It’s understood that the game features a massive catalog of the Wu-Tang Clan’s music, most of which has been re-imagined by producer and DJ Just Blaze for the game.

Gathered loot and items all fit into the game’s central social hub, named the ‘Neighborhood’. Here, players will be able to sell their loot, listen to music, and show off their unique fashion choices with one another.

Sources outlined that the game will be a “welcome space for all players” and will center around characters from BIPOC and historically marginalized communities.

Why is genshin the only (or one of very few) action/rpg/gacha games that isn't aimed solely at guys?

Here is the reality, for me at least. I have always wanted to dive into games like these, with good lore, nice combat and stunning graphics and characters that are just 👌. However I only was able to actually do this after genshin was released. I spent years downloading and uninstalling games because of the over- sexualized female characters and lack of any male counterparts. I realize that this is due to the "male demographic" however I feel like genshin has proved that there are a good number of people out there who want more male characters. Not just girls, but some of my gay friends absolutely simp over the guys just as a straight guy would their waifu I hoped that genshin would inspire other devs to try to include more male characters, but the only one I have seen so far is tower of fantasy. ToF doesn't have many male gacha characters, but enough to make it feel like they acknowledge there is some demand for it. As a straight female gamer, I feel like I am being restricted from the same enjoyment that others get from these types of games. Anyone else want to see more games that actually have some appeal to those attracted to guys?

To clarify, I am not talking about otome or turn based games. I am talking about specifically games that use open world elements.

(Update, changed stupid autocorrect typos.)

Underdogs is a 10/10 Action RPG Masterclass for VR.

I just picked this up after watching Habie's video on it and holy cow- it delivers.

The action is like Thrill of the Fight mixed with Echo VR, but it goes so much beyond that. The narrative delivery and theme is awesome- the comic book / parallax effect on cutscenes is probably the best storytelling I've seen in VR. It's short and sweet and their audio track makes you feel like you're in this post-apocalyptic world they've crafted. Not to mention the way they tie your mech upgrades to the player story is just fantastic, and the upgrades feel impactful- every choice feels like it has a purpose.

Yeah, 10/10 so glad I bought it. Easily just became my #1 VR game.

edit: Grammar is hard. Too hyped to edit before posting.

Looking for an open world, action rpg/jrpg

Hi so I’m fairly new to the switch, I’ve been looking around the store and trying to find a good open world game with loads of combat. I prefer games in 3rd or first person combat as opposed to turn based/ strategy style games. I love a leveling system and a loot drops that you can grind for. I enjoy hunting for collectibles and something that can keep me busy for hundreds of hours(just looking for something to keep my attention for awhile and not get bored of). Thank you anyone in advance for recommendations I will list off games that I have played that are similar to what I’m looking for.

Skyrim Witcher 3 Outer worlds Borderlands 1,2,3, and presequal Assassins creed Immortals Fenix rising Sao fatal bullet/alicazation lycoris God eater 3 Zelda BOTW and TOTK Payday 2 is not open world but I enjoy the gameplay and earning $ system

Came from Versus expecting a pretty standard JRPG experience and pacing...

...received Fast and the Furious Fantasy with set pieces that rival FF16 Eikon battles and even better.

On the last chapter and looking back on all the crazy action sequences I can believe how much of it was packed in so far. Chapter 8 alone was absolutely bonkers from start to finish. This game was 1000% more fun than I thought. I hope the pacing and level of insanity continues in expansions to the game.

The thing with FF16 is that between the incredible action there were so many slogging scenes and areas that just disjointed the pace of the game. On relink its crazy from the first big airship battle to finish, which actually feels much better. It just embraces it and says "yeah, let's be Bayonetta with final fantasy characters." It just works really well.

The Grandcypher is the real bro though, that ship gets trashed twice as hard as the Razorcrest from the Mandalorian and still keeps going. That's hard record to beat.

Action RPG Recommendations

The genre is a favorite for me on PC but I haven't played many on the Switch. I'm going to be traveling a bit more so I figured now would be a good time to pick one up.

I enjoy character customization, flexible combat (being creative with different combos), difficult fights, and loot if it makes significant changes to play styles.

I've considered:

Monster hunter Rise/Sunbreak

Dragons Dogma

Kingdoms of Amalur: Re-Reckoning

But I would be open to any suggestions as I'm not sure what other food games I should be looking at.

AMA - I'm Chris Wilson from Grinding Gear Games. We make Path of Exile, a free-to-play Action RPG. Ask me anything!

I'm Chris Wilson from Grinding Gear Games! We just announced our upcoming Path of Exile expansion, Heist, where you'll hire a crew of thieves to assist you in pulling off elaborate and risky Heists. We're also launching on macOS alongside Heist in just over two weeks!

We started developing Path of Exile in my garage in Auckland, New Zealand almost 14 years ago. We now have a team of over 145 and have expanded Path of Exile across platforms and throughout the world. We release new expansions every 13 weeks and are working towards the release of Path of Exile 2, a sequel that will be patched into the main Path of Exile client upon release so that players can play whichever storyline they want before entering the shared endgame.

I'd love to answer your questions about getting a studio off the ground, making games and of course, anything Path of Exile!

Edit: Okay, all done! Back to work on Heist. See you guys at launch on September 18, and thanks for all the great questions.
