Texas /ˈtɛksəs/ (Spanish: Texas or Tejas [ˈtexas]) is a state in the United States of America. It is the second most populous and second largest state by area in the US. Geographically located in the south central part of the country, Texas shares an international border with Mexico to the south and borders the states of New Mexico to the west, Oklahoma to the north, Arkansas to the northeast, and Louisiana to the east. Texas has an area of 268,820 square miles (696,200 km2) and a growing population of over 27.5 million residents (July 2015).
Houston is the largest city in Texas and the fourth-largest in the United States, while San Antonio is the second largest in the state and seventh largest in the United States. Dallas–Fort Worth and Greater Houston are the fourth and fifth largest United States metropolitan statistical areas, respectively. Other major cities include Austin (the state capital) and El Paso. Texas is nicknamed the Lone Star State to signify Texas as a former independent republic, and as a reminder of the state's struggle for independence from Mexico. The "Lone Star" can be found on the Texan state flag and on the Texan state seal. The origin of the state name, Texas, is from the word, "Tejas", which means 'friends' in the Caddo language.

In episode 150 of Redacted Tonight, host Lee Camp delves into the recently leaked documents that reveal what really happened at Standing Rock. It turns out the Water Protectors, trying to keep their land and water safe, were subjected to counterterrorism measures by the mercenary army, TigerSwan, hired by the company building the pipeline, Energy Transfer Partners. Counterterrorism! Like they were ISIS! This is just another example of an insane corporate state violent overreach at the expense of the people and common sense. Next, Lee shows a ridiculous video of acting Assistant Secretary of State Stuart Jones. In a press briefing, Jones was asked why he criticized Iran’s record on human rights while standing right next to Saudi Arabian officials and saying nothing about them. Jones went si...
Show us your devotament by visiting http://give5dollars.jdrftype1.com JDRF has led the search for a cure for T1D since our founding in 1970. In those days, people commonly called the disease “juvenile diabetes” because it was frequently diagnosed in, and strongly associated with, young children. Our organization began as the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation. Later, to emphasize exactly how we planned to end the disease, we added a word and became the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.Today, we know an equal number of children and adults are diagnosed every day—approximately 110 people per day. Thanks to better therapies—which JDRF funding has been instrumental in developing and making available—people with T1D live longer and stay healthier while they await the cure. So a few years ago, we...

LABIRINTO :: Instrumental, experimental, post rock Formed in mid-2003, by friends who sought to materialize their various musical and personal influences through instrumental composition, Labirinto seeks to create textures and environments full of imagery, as in a movie soundtrack, in which the scenes are on account of the listener’s imagination. The dedication and the diligence of Labirinto’s first album drew attention of the specialized media, that acclaimed Anatema as one of the best 2010 releases and as a fundamental piece of the current effervescent post-rock worldwide scene. The album counted with Bob Weston (Shellac, Mission of Burma) and Greg Norman (partner of Steve Albini at the Electrical Audio Studio) as part of the technical team. The good reception to the complex and sophi...

Texas public libraries are economic engines in their communities. According to a new report on the economic benefits of public libraries, we now know that for every one dollar invested in Texas public libraries, communities see a return of $4.64 in services. A data-intensive research design was developed to document and to quantify these economic benefits. Extensive databases from the Texas State Library and Archives Commission (TSLAC) were used in conjunction with the input-out economic modeling software, IMPLAN. Based on the IMPLAN model, which analyzed public libraries purely as business and organizational entities, libraries produced $976 million in economic activity. Further, in FY2015, more than 11,000 jobs in Texas were dependent on public library expenditures.

AUSTIN, TX— The Texas Constitution demands that the State shall provide for an efficient public education system, yet the definition of an efficient school system has never been litigated before the courts. TAB believes that it is time the courts consider and determine what it actually costs to educate a student in Texas, and more importantly whether that money is being spent efficiently. This is why TAB is joining a school finance lawsuit that seeks to answer that question. “We have decided that the public school system in Texas, at present, is inefficient,” said Bill Hammond, TAB President and CEO. “We want to bring to the court the issue of efficiency. Texas businesses pay for two-thirds of the cost of education and are the ultimate consumer of the product of our Texas public educat...

Keith Norris presenting at the 2nd annual Ancestral Health Symposium 2012 (AHS12). Abstract: The lay public—and, unfortunately, many professionals within the “fitness” and “strength and conditioning” community—consider “health” and “performance” to be synonymous and/or interchangeable terms. This is a disservice both to the lay community, who then assumes, that only an inordinate amount of exercise (both in time and intensity) can elicit superior health, and to the sporting community, who wrongly assumes that superior sporting performance is indicative of superior, underlying health. This knowledge gap is a tremendous impediment to those most at danger of manifesting some variant of the prevalent “diseases of modernity” as this notion discourages them from seeking and undertaking intel...

San Antonio, in Texas, is close to the Mexican border. Old Spanish missions surround this river settlement. About 28 million people visit San Antonio each year to experience its Latin-style atmosphere. The main attractions are the famous Riverwalk and historically significant Alamo fortress, a symbol of proud defiance. The old town, with its winding paths and arched bridges, is best explored on foot. Watertaxis, vintage buses and trolleys also shuttle visitors around. San Antonio's constant buzz is best enjoyed in lively hubs such as La Villita and Market Square. Bands often play at riverside amphitheaters and restaurants. The dwellings in the Institute Of Texan Cultures provide a glimpse of early life in the Southwest. Those keen to see history through the eyes of artists should browse ...
The Nathan E. Stewart/DBL 54 is an articulated tug/barge" (ATB) and is owned by the Texas-based Kirby Corporation, which is one of the largest petroleum product ATB operators in the USA. It travels back and forth up the B.C. Inside Passage by “special waiver" which exempts it from Transport Canada shipping regulations. These guide the movement of all other tankers operating in BC waters. As a result, it operates here with no Canadian pilots on board, it does not require escort tugs while maneuvering in Port Metro Vancouver, and most egregiously, it is allowed to travel north through Seymour Narrows and into the "voluntary tanker exclusion zone" that is the B.C. Inside Passage. As such, this unflagged foreign vessel blatantly flouts the concerns of the people of Canada, and operates here se...

In Fall of 2009, I hunted black wildebeest in Africa in order to again "meet my meat." My wonderful guide was Chris Bolton, of Zungah Safaris, in Port Elizabeth, South Africa. After the hunt, we transported the meat to a well-known Cape Town Chef, Pete Goff, of The Kitchen Cowboys. This was a very emotional experience for me and my friend, Sonja Kroop, who was shooting most of the footage. We had not anticipated the hunt nor filming, when we arrived to visit a friend in Cape Town, so the footage quality is old mini-dv, not high quality HD. Some viewers may find this to be GRAPHIC CONTENT, as it shows the killing of an animal for food.
The Round-Up In Winter, 2009, Ashley Chiles and her two long-time Texas compadres, Amy Esacove & Patrice Shackelford decided to "meet their meat" on a wild boar hunt in South Texas. Ashley recruits two well-known Houston chefs: Bryan Caswell of Reef, El Real, & Little Bigs, as well as J.J. "Papa-Beav" Jones of Beavers Restaurant, and master boar-Hunter & guide, Lupe Flores.
On September 11th 2015 I took the Texas Eagle Amtrak train from LA to Austin. The train passes through the states of California, Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas, taking nearly 33 hours to complete this leg of the journey, before continuing on up to Chicago. This short film comprises a number of clips I took from the train window, mostly in Arizona and Texas. I highly recommended seeing America this way. Though it's not the most comfortable way to travel you'll see things and meet people you rarely would travelling by car or plane. Shot on my iPhone 6 using the Hyperlapse app (for stabilisation), edited in Premiere Pro. Full details of the train rou...

The northwest Texas towns of Turkey and Crowell are separated by about 60 miles as the crow flies; they’re places you’re most likely to stumble upon only if taking a few wrong turns between Wichita Falls and Lubbock, or Amarillo. But in December of 2013, the two tiny towns became leading actors in the final acts of the University Interscholastic League’s six-man football season, breaking through to meet in the semi-finals of a 32-team playoff bracket. Developed in the 1930s to give smaller high schools an opportunity at top-level competition, six-man thrives in the rural districts of a few football-crazy states—nowhere more prevalently than in Texas. Built and animated entirely in CG, the Texas Rising main title chronologically depicts the film’s eight fundamental plot points which unfold throughout History's flagship ten hour miniseries. These plot points include the retreat of Sam Houston’s Army and the massacre at Goliad, Emily West's seduction and betrayal of Santa Anna which in turn ignited the battle and victory at San Jacinto, through to the failed militarization of the Comanches and the rise of the Texas Rangers. Each historical moment is depicted by highly detailed and layered graphic arrays that twist, change and unfold to reveal many hidden details of the story chapter by chapter.
