Ann-Marie is a real estate agent with Realty Executives. After wrapping up a video shoot at a beautiful home she's currently representing I asked her to take a few minutes and show me around the town.
The attractions of Western Springs, apart from its small-town atmosphere, include its easy access to downtown Chicago by Metra, good expressway access to O'Hare and Midway Airports, excellent schools and parks, a varied housing stock and a pedestrian-friendly downtown.

Western Springs Lakeside, Auckland!
Motions Creek Weir and The Waters of the Eel.
Water flows into the Western Springs from the lava flows and ash fields of the surrounding Waitemata volcanic field including Owairaka (Mt Albert), Te Tatua (Three Kings) and Maungawhau (Mt Eden). Water also flows in from the Meola-Motions Stream watershed through the Waitemata Formation. From the Western Springs the water flows to the lake and then through the Motions Creek to the sea. The daily discharge of the Western Springs is estimated to be 1 to 2 million gallons. The waters of the Western Springs served as the major water supply for Auckland from 1877 until 1902. Now the Western Springs wetlands are a site of regional significance in recognition of their ecological and conservation value.
There are few other places within the Tamaki Ecological District which display such numbers and diversity of waterfowl. A conscious effort was made over time to stock the Western Springs Lake with introduced species. In 1914 a swan was sent from the Domain and placed in the lake, but unfortunately it was shot. In 1927 a flock of ten Black Swans were captured on the Kaipara Harbour and after the wings were clipped they were liberated in the Lake. There they settled under the care of Auckland Zoo officials and the Auckland Acclimatisation Society. Grey Ducks also found sanctuary at the Western Springs lakeside in 1927 and were similarly protected against poaching.
By 1937 Western Springs was a beautiful natural sanctuary for wild bird with flocks of ducks arriving at and departing in the morning and evening, together with New Zealand Dabchicks, Black Shags, Grey Herons and at least one shy Australian Bittern.
Today the wetlands provide a sanctuary and breeding ground for common native birds such as the White-faced Heron, the Pukeko, the Welcome Swallow, the Kingfisher, the Australian Coot and a mixed breeding colony of the Pied and Little Shags. There are also one or two breeding pairs of the New Zealand Dabchick and Scaup, both uncommon native species. The Grey Duck also breeds here. The Paradise Shellduck (endemic) visits regularly in small numbers but does not breed at Western Springs.
Common introduced species breeding at the lakeside is the Black Swan, the Mallard and hybrid Grey/Mallard Duck, and the Domestic Goose. Native birds not breeding here but migrating or visiting, usually in smaller numbers, are the Royal Spoonbill, the Australian Harrier, the Red-billed Gull, the Black-blacked Gull and the Little Black Shag. Infrequent or occasional native visitors include the Grey Teal and the Black Shag.

Western Springs
Western Springs is a residential suburb and park in the west of the city of Auckland in the north of New Zealand. It is located four kilometres to the west of the city centre. The park is situated to the north of State Highway 16 and the residential suburb is located southeast of the park on the opposite side of State Highway 16.
The suburb is dominated by the large park (featuring a lake with a variety of birdlife), within which are situated Auckland Zoo, Western Springs Stadium and M.O.T.A.T. (the Museum of Transport and Technology). The park is the location of the annual Pasifika Festival, one of Auckland's most popular public events.
Across the road from the Zoo is the school of Western Springs College, with a student population of around 1050. Some students attend Mount Albert Grammar School. Catholic students commute to St Paul's College or St Mary's College, Marist College or St Peter's College.
Suburb
History
The Māori valued Waiorea (Western Springs) for the clean, clear spring water and the eels that lived in the stream. After colonisation, the area was part of a block of land farmed by a Scottish settler called William Motion.

There they settled under the care of Auckland Zoo officials and the Auckland Acclimatisation Society. Grey Ducks also found sanctuary at the Western Springs lakeside in 1927 and were similarly protected against poaching. By 1937 Western Springs was a beautiful natural sanctuary for wild bird with flocks of ducks arriving at and departing in the morning and evening, together with New Zealand Dabchicks, Black Shags, Grey Herons and at least one shy Australian Bittern. Today the wetlands provide a sanctuary and breeding ground for common native birds such as the White-faced Heron, the Pukeko, the Welcome Swallow, the Kingfisher, the Australian Coot and a mixed breeding colony of the Pied and Little Shags. I decided to visit my friends from Holland who were exploring the Canadian Rockies with their RV, before chasing them down in Banff I treated myself on the most famous hot dog in Canada at Tubby Dog and tried to break the glass floor at the Calgary Tower.

It was such a memorable experience meeting my Dutch friends on the other side of the world so we decided to do it up proper with a family BBQ and a few local brewski's, namely the Powder Hound by The Grizzly Paw which is a local brewery in Canmore, Alberta.
On our first adventure we left in the early morning to take the Banff Gondola to Sulphur Mountain, one of the most mesmerizing views of Banff. Make sure to fill up prior on a classic Canadian breakfast at Tim Hortons, the Canadian way.
The next adventure was a private helicopter ride at Rockies Heli Canada who took us from Kananaskis through the Rocky Mountains. It was a gorgeous clear day which resulted in excellent video footage. We even saw the same river where they shot the movie: The Revenant.
What also amazed us were the buck loads of wildlife passing by the RV throughout our stay at Banff's tunnel mountain campgrounds.
In next week's article I will give you all the details on our adventure at Lake Louise were I completed an 11 hour, 20 kilometer hike, thus best is to relax and relieve your sore muscles at Banff Upper Hot Springs after that trip.
In conclusion we were very fortunate that we had excellent weather with blue skies the entire trip. I highly recommend visiting Calgary, Banff & Lake Louise in the first week of June for the best experience.

Ghost Town History
Ghost Town Museum was created in 1954 to preserve a piece of Colorado's Wild West heritage.
In 1858 the cry "Pikes Peak or Bust" opened up the heartland of the Colorado territory to the gold prospector. Gold mining became a significant factor that led to the statehood of Colorado. The miners and the people who provided services to them quickly populated the western frontier of the United States. They needed transportation, and before long the twin steel ribbons of the railroads were pushing into the mountains to transport ore for processing.
Towns sprang up overnight and by the 1860's and 1870's people had blanketed the west. It was a rough and tumble time. Small encampments became small towns. Small cities along the rocky mountain Front Range provided a central location for supplies and services. The search for gold drove prospectors to every mountain valley, and every mountain peak. Ghost Town History
Ghost Town Museum was created in 1954 to preserve a piece of Colorado's Wild West heritage.
In 1858 the cry "Pikes Peak or Bust" opened up the heartland of the Colorado territory to the gold prospector. Gold mining became a significant factor that led to the statehood of Colorado. The miners and the people who provided services to them quickly populated the western frontier of the United States. They needed transportation, and before long the twin steel ribbons of the railroads were pushing into the mountains to transport ore for processing.
Towns sprang up overnight and by the 1860's and 1870's people had blanketed the west. It was a rough and tumble time. Small encampments became small towns. Small cities along the rocky mountain Front Range provided a central location for supplies and services. The search for gold drove prospectors to every mountain valley, and every mountain peak. Water flows into the Western Springs from the lava flows and ash fields of the surrounding Waitemata volcanic field including Owairaka (Mt Albert), Te Tatua (Three Kings) and Maungawhau (Mt Eden). Water also flows in from the Meola-Motions Stream watershed through the Waitemata Formation. From the Western Springs the water flows to the lake and then through the Motions Creek to the sea. The daily discharge of the Western Springs is estimated to be 1 to 2 million gallons. The waters of the Western Springs served as the major water supply for Auckland from 1877 until 1902. Now the Western Springs wetlands are a site of regional significance in recognition of their ecological and conservation value.
There are few other places within the Tamaki Ecological District which display such numbers and diversity of waterfowl. A conscious effort was made over time to stock the Western Springs Lake with introduced species. In 1914 a swan was sent from the Domain and placed in the lake, but unfortunately it was shot. In 1927 a flock of ten Black Swans were captured on the Kaipara Harbour and after the wings were clipped they were liberated in the Lake. There they settled under the care of Auckland Zoo officials and the Auckland Acclimatisation Society. Grey Ducks also found sanctuary at the Western Springs lakeside in 1927 and were similarly protected against poaching.
By 1937 Western Springs was a beautiful natural sanctuary for wild bird with flocks of ducks arriving at and departing in the morning and evening, together with New Zealand Dabchicks, Black Shags, Grey Herons and at least one shy Australian Bittern.
Today the wetlands provide a sanctuary and breeding ground for common native birds such as the White-faced Heron, the Pukeko, the Welcome Swallow, the Kingfisher, the Australian Coot and a mixed breeding colony of the Pied and Little Shags. There are also one or two breeding pairs of the New Zealand Dabchick and Scaup, both uncommon native species. The Grey Duck also breeds here. The Paradise Shellduck (endemic) visits regularly in small numbers but does not breed at Western Springs.
Common introduced species breeding at the lakeside is the Black Swan, the Mallard and hybrid Grey/Mallard Duck, and the Domestic Goose. Native birds not breeding here but migrating or visiting, usually in smaller numbers, are the Royal Spoonbill, the Australian Harrier, the Red-billed Gull, the Black-blacked Gull and the Little Black Shag. Infrequent or occasional native visitors include the Grey Teal and the Black Shag.

By 1937 Western Springs was a beautiful natural sanctuary for wild bird with flocks of ducks arriving at and departing in the morning and evening, together with New Zealand Dabchicks, Black Shags, Grey Herons and at least one shy Australian Bittern.
Today the wetlands provide a sanctuary and breeding ground for common native birds such as the White-faced Heron, the Pukeko, the Welcome Swallow, the Kingfisher, the Australian Coot and a mixed breeding colony of the Pied and Little Shags. There are also one or two breeding pairs of the New Zealand Dabchick and Scaup, both uncommon native species. The Grey Duck also breeds here. The Paradise Shellduck (endemic) visits regularly in small numbers but does not breed at Western Springs.
Common introduced species breeding at the lakeside is the Black Swan, the Mallard and hybrid Grey/Mallard Duck, and the Domestic Goose. Native birds not breeding here but migrating or visiting, usually in smaller numbers, are the Royal Spoonbill, the Australian Harrier, the Red-billed Gull, the Black-blacked Gull and the Little Black Shag. Infrequent or occasional native visitors include the Grey Teal and the Black Shag.

Railfanning Western Springs, IL (and more!) on August 1, 2015 – Metra BNSF DM&E; UP Amtrak
Having finally concluded the real estate transaction in Morrison, IL that has been taking up most of my time the last two months, it was time for some railfanning. I spent most of my morning on the BNSF Racetrack in Western Springs, IL, where I observed a Bentley and a Maserati as well as lots of trains! But my day wasn’t entirely confined to the Chicago area, as I was able to make a few cool catches on the way back home to Rockford as well. First, the trains at Western Springs. The station here (I believe) dates to Burlington Route days, and so is quite picturesque, but the platforms are rather narrow which makes photography a challenge. Then it was time for lunch and time to head back to Rockford. While heading home on US 20, I saw a CP freight stopped near Pingree Grove. When I saw from the IL 47 underpass what the power was, I knew I had to record this train!

After catching a DM&E; double-header, what could be better? Well, I stopped by Union, IL to wrap up my day by seeing what was running at the Illinois Railway Museum. There is a parking area for railfans east of the museum, at Seeman Road, and so I parked there for a while to see what passed by.
