The Texas Eagle is a 1,306-mile (2,102 km) passenger train route operated by Amtrak in the central and western United States. Trains run daily between Chicago, Illinois, and San Antonio, Texas, and continue to Los Angeles, California, 2,728 miles (4,390 km) total, three days a week (incorporated as part of the Sunset Limited). Prior to 1988, the train was known as the Eagle.
During fiscal year 2011, the Texas Eagle carried nearly 300,000 passengers, a 4.3% increase over FY2010. The train had a total revenue of $24,475,309 during FY2011, an increase of 7.7% from FY 2010.
Amtrak's Texas Eagle is the direct successor of the Missouri Pacific Railroad and Texas and Pacific Railway train of the same name, which was inaugurated in 1948 and ultimately discontinued in 1971. The route of Amtrak's Texas Eagle is longer (Chicago to San Antonio versus St. Louis to San Antonio), but much of today's route is historically a part of the original Texas Eagle route. St. Louis to Texarkana and Taylor, Texas, to San Antonio is over former Missouri Pacific Railroad trackage, while the Texarkana to Fort Worth segment traverses the former Texas and Pacific Railway.
Texas /ˈtɛksəs/ (Spanish: Texas or Tejas [ˈtexas]) is a state in the United States of America. It is the second most populous and second largest state by area in the US. Geographically located in the south central part of the country, Texas shares an international border with Mexico to the south and borders the states of New Mexico to the west, Oklahoma to the north, Arkansas to the northeast, and Louisiana to the east. Texas has an area of 268,820 square miles (696,200 km2) and a growing population of over 27.5 million residents (July 2015).
Houston is the largest city in Texas and the fourth-largest in the United States, while San Antonio is the second largest in the state and seventh largest in the United States. Dallas–Fort Worth and Greater Houston are the fourth and fifth largest United States metropolitan statistical areas, respectively. Other major cities include Austin (the state capital) and El Paso. Texas is nicknamed the Lone Star State to signify Texas as a former independent republic, and as a reminder of the state's struggle for independence from Mexico. The "Lone Star" can be found on the Texan state flag and on the Texan state seal. The origin of the state name, Texas, is from the word, "Tejas", which means 'friends' in the Caddo language.
Eagle is a common name for many large birds of prey of the family Accipitridae; it belongs to several groups of genera that are not necessarily closely related to each other.
Most of the 60 species of eagles are from Eurasia and Africa. Outside this area, just 14 species can be found – two in North America, nine in Central and South America, and three in Australia.
Eagles are large, powerfully built birds of prey, with a heavy head and beak. Even the smallest eagles, like the booted eagle (Aquila pennata) (which is comparable in size to a common buzzard (Buteo buteo) or red-tailed hawk (B. jamaicensis)), have relatively longer and more evenly broad wings, and more direct, faster flight – despite the reduced size of aerodynamic feathers. Most eagles are larger than any other raptors apart from some vultures. The smallest species of eagle is the South Nicobar serpent eagle (Spilornis klossi), at 450 g (0.99 lb) and 40 cm (16 in). The largest species are discussed below. Like all birds of prey, eagles have very large hooked beaks for tearing flesh from their prey, strong muscular legs, and powerful talons. The beak is typically heavier than that of most other birds of prey. Eagles' eyes are extremely powerful, having up to 3.6 times human acuity for the martial eagle, which enables them to spot potential prey from a very long distance. This keen eyesight is primarily attributed to their extremely large pupils which ensure minimal diffraction (scattering) of the incoming light. The female of all known species of eagles is larger than the male.
Delano Floyd McCoury (born February 1, 1939 in York, Pennsylvania) is an American bluegrass musician. As leader of the Del McCoury Band, he plays guitar and sings lead vocals along with his two sons, Ronnie McCoury and Rob McCoury, who play mandolin and banjo respectively. In June 2010, he received a National Heritage Fellowship lifetime achievement award from the National Endowment for the Arts and in 2011 he was elected into the International Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame.
McCoury has had a long career in bluegrass. Although originally hired as banjo player, he sang lead vocals and played rhythm guitar for Bill Monroe's Blue Grass Boys in 1963, with whom he first appeared on the Grand Ole Opry. McCoury briefly appeared with the Golden State Boys in 1964 before taking a series of day jobs in construction and logging, while continuing to work as an amateur musician in Maryland, Virginia and Pennsylvania.
In the 1980s his sons began performing with him. Fiddler Tad Marks and bass player Mike Brantley joined McCoury's group in early 1990s. McCoury's group toured widely throughout the US. They relocated to Nashville, Tennessee as they began to attract attention. Fiddler Jason Carter and bassist Mike Bub joined in 1992. Alan Bartram joined the band as bassist in 2005. McCoury became a member of the Grand Ole Opry in October 2003.
WATCH IN HD!!!!!! This is all of my footage from my trip on the Amtrak Texas Eagle 22 Northbound to Chicago from Dallas on August 17, 2015. I had a sleeper in the last car of the train (Until St. Louis where they added an unusable coach class car to the end.) At the very end, you can see the inside of Chicago's Union Station. Skip around in the video or watch the whole thing, although I'm not sure you'll want to sit through the entire thing. :) Thanks for watching! WATCH IN HD On August 22, 2015 I rode the Amtrak Texas Eagle 21 from Chicago Union Station to Dallas Union Station. This is all of my footage from getting on the train to getting off and watching it continue on to Fort Worth and ultimately San Antonio, Texas. In the last car of the train (a sleeper car) I had a little room where I slept at night. I spent most of my time in the lounge car where there were lots of windows to see all the sights trackside and also in the very back to look out a window at what we had passed directly behind us. So sit back enjoy the video. You can skip around or watch the whole thing if you're up for it. :) Thanks for watching! For Thanksgiving I road Amtrak to go to my grandma's house. Thank you Amtrak for the fantastic trip!
Took the family for a train ride during the summer for our family reunion in Indiana. Took the train from San Antonio, TX to St. Louis, MO. It took 25.5 hours!!! Atleast the kids were happy and enjoyed it! I'd DEF make sure to get a sleeper car if we did the trip again along with pack our own food.. the food at dinner was lousy and VERY expensive!

Our walk from the sleeping car in the rear up to the dining car in the front. Tour of the roomette car, coach cars, lounge car and dining car. Did not get the cafe which was down below. All these were on the second story. As you may see, people are generally very friendly on the train, staff and passengers alike. From Longview, TX to Chicago Il.

My Granddaddy was a railroad man
When I was young he took me by the hand
Dragged me to the station at the break of dawn
Said, "Boy, I got to show you somethin' 'fore it's gone"
She was blue and silver, she was right on time
We rode that Texas Eagle on the Mopac line
We had some sandwiches that Grandma packed
We rode to Palestine and hitchhiked back
Home in time for supper with a tale to tell
That night I dreamed I heard that lonesome whistle wail
When I got old enough to take the train alone
I ride that Texas Eagle down to San Antone
And nowadays they don't make no trains
Just the piggyback freighters and them Amtrak things
They shut the Eagle down a while ago
Sold it to the railroad down in Mexico
And every now and then that whistle's on my mind
