From April onwards 500,000 shopkeepers, cafe owners, pub landlords and other small business owners will be charged up to ten times more, taking a £600-a-year tax bill up to £3,000 and forcing many to close. Karen and Mark Cheater, who run The Langtons guesthouse in the seaside town of Eastbourne, say their bill will leap from £639 a year to £3,136.

A flurry of moves by banks and building societies last week, which pushed some rates up and others down, is forcing savers to rethink almost daily which account is best.

But it's about to become a great deal more complicated. Suppliers are launching deals that mean you can buy power in advance, enjoy free electricity at weekends - and even pay a cheaper rate if you wait until it rains to run the vacuum cleaner round.

Hundreds of buyers, including Kelly Terry from Maidstone, Kent (pictured), have flooded internet forums and social media sites complaining of problems with their new homes.

New affordability rules introduced by the FCAy are to blame.
