Dee Rangers "Five Spanish Minutes"

The Dee Rangers could be one of the greatest overlooked bands in garage rock today, but why that is is simply beyond me. Maybe it’s because they’re Swedish, and have simply been given the slip because of the success of so many other Swedish rawk’n'roll acts, who knows...... I guess it’s a good thing we don’t have to rely on hype to know what’s good, right? Well, some of us don’t, I suppose. The garage freaks in Europe seem to know what’s up, as these guys have been invited to play at some pretty high-profile festivals over the past year or so, including Gearfest in Sweden this past June, the Primitive 2 Dutch International Garage Festival in July, and they’re booked for the Spanish Beat Goes On festival that’s taking place just a couple of weeks from now. And there’s good reason why they’re finally getting this much-deserved exposure. While these guys have been kicking some serious garage-punk ass for quite a while now, accumulating quite an impressive discography of singles on such great labels as Estrus, Rockin’ Bones, and Munster, they haven’t been able to put forth that one really great record that might just push them to the top of the heap… that is, perhaps, until now. Quite frankly,Five Spanish Minutes was one of the best rock’n'roll releases of 2005, yet unfortunately I don’t think many people on this side of the Atlantic even knew about it. In fact, only one person even bothered to list it in the Best Albums of 2005 topic on the message board (go figure). This is simply a fantastic album, and, in this humble reviewer’s opinion, is easily the band’s best to date (the other two being 2002’s So Far Out So Good and 2003’s Pretty Ugly Beat—both on the now defunct White Jazz label). This new LP, which was released towards the tail-end of 2005 on Germany’s Screaming Apple Records, is ripe with organ-driven, hip-shakin’, swingin’ ’60s-flavored garage rock, and the album is not short on great songwriting that includes powerful hooks that make it one of the most memorable LPs I’ve heard in quite some time. But what impressed me most about this album was the band’s obvious departure from the more Fleshtones-influenced sound of their previous records. I don’t know if “matured” is the word I really wanna use here (since maturing in rock’n'roll is usually so closely related to suddenly sucking ass), but it’s clear to me that they’ve really come into their own on this release and have nailed down a sound that is anything but bland or predictable retro-garage. Indeed, it’s records like this that clearly show that this often overly crowded genre still has the potential to produce exciting music that takes the best elements of the past and throws them at ya with enough verocity that you can’t help but be optimistic about the future of garage rock. Let’s just hope that the Dee Rangers continue to be a part of that future. Enjoy the MP3s below. They’re my top picks from Five Spanish Minutes. (garagepunk.com)trax:

Hawaii Samurai "Let There Be Surf" 2003

Savage, gritty and powerful hard-edged Surf Guitar instrumentals. All instro - with a good mix of original material and cover tracks. One of the top European Surf bands, you'll hear influences of Man or Astroman?, Link Wray, Dick Dale and Davie Allan, and plenty of Hawaii Samurai originality too.Hawaii Samurai are French band with an odd blend of CHUM-ish grit and a strange drama. Mixed reviews here. Some really interesting and powerful tracks amid less interesting and repetitious material. The good stuff is well worth hearing. Ray Daytona & Googoobombos "One Eyed Jack" 2007

Some surf garage punk from italy. Ray Daytona & Googoobombos!Ray Daytona and Googoobombos are known in Italy as a real cult band, their sound being a hyper-cybernetic mixture of melodic surf garge tunes played live at an insane speed with punk rock attitude and good technical skill. Since the very beginning they delight their audience with their gigs, melting together high energy and a strong sound impact. The band has played both in Italy and abroad, opening for such bands as Misfits, Sonic Youth, The Libertines, Franz Ferdinand, Radio Birdman, Satanic Surfers, and sharing the stage with Nashville Pussy, Billy Childish and Thee Headcoats, Robert Gordon, Phantom Surfers, Link Protrudi and The Jaymen, Demons, The Squirtgun. Johnny & The Hurricanes "The EP Collection"

Although they really had little in common with the reverb-laden California surf sound of the early '60s, Johnny & the Hurricanes had their greatest success during this period, and while their raw, sax-led R&B leaned more to Junior Walker than Dick Dale, they are still remembered mostly as a landlocked (Toledo, OH, was their home base) surf outfit. This collection of their EPs and singles is an ideal introduction to the band, and it has their biggest hits, 1959's "Crossfire" and two rough and ready remakes of old folk tunes, "Red River Rock" (a version of "Red River Valley") and "Beatnik Fly" (which turns the old minstrel song "Blue Tail Fly" into an after-hours stomper). Also of note here is the set closer, an elegant and jazzy mid-tempo shuffle called "Minnesota Fats." (Steve Leggett, Allmusic)trax:

Mikelangelo & The Tin Star "The Surf'n'Western Sounds of …"

“If Las Vegas had a beach, and a clone made from the mixed DNA of Elvis Presley and Nick Cave had a band that played surf rock on that imaginary beach, then the music Elvis Cave’s band played would sound like Mikelangelo & The Tin Star.” - Rave MagazineMikelangelo formed the Tin Star in September 2009 in Melbourne to pursue his love of instrumental guitar music and spaghetti western soundtracks of the late 50s and early 60s. The group disbanded in July 2013 with a huge farewell show in Melbourne at the Corner Hotel for the inaugural Leaps and Bounds festival. The Tin Star was born out of Canberra group the D.C.S.L.A (2000-2004) sharing the same drummer, Pete Olsen, and lead guitarist, Fiete Geier. The Tin Star included Mikelangelo on lead vocals and rhythm acoustic and electric guitar and Gareth Hill on bass. The group independently released the limited edition Floodhouse EP in February 2011, followed by the highly acclaimed album The Surf’n’Western Sounds Of Mikelangelo and the Tin Star on Laughing Outlaw records in June the same year.
The Tin Star disbanded in July 2013 and the group has no plans to reform. Mikelangelo’s love of twangy guitar remains, and this will continue to haunt his future projects… - mikelangelo.net

Ray Daytona & Googoobombos "Fasten Seat Belt" 2005

In 2003 they start the partnership with Ammonia records, that publishes at first Great Expectations, an anthology with songs from all the singles and some unissued songs from the first two albums…...In 2004 comes out Fasten Seat Belt, third album recorded in studio, again with David Lenci on the controls. With this album the musical horizon of Ray Daytona and Googoobombos gets wider, songs becoming faster on one side and with an open, psychedelic structure, helped by electro-analogic effects. During the recordings the band is joined on Hammond by Paolo “Apollo” Negri, who will play also some live gigs with the band. Winston Smith is again the author of the artwork for the cover. The Manetti Bros direct the video of the single Slim, horny and tanned, and the band tours in Italy, France, Spain, Belgium and Switzerland. Meanwhile there are some changes in the line-up, around the two stable elements Ray Daytona and Rosie. Their live performances are enriched by the “Ray Daytona Rock and Royal Rumble”, featuring many superheroes challenging each other and the audience fighting in a wrestling style, inspired by comics and a trash imaginary. The Rumble involves the people from the audience and calls them to take part to the fight with their own home-made costumes. The promotional tour of Fasten Seat Belt goes on for two years, during which the band shares the stage with such bands as Phantom Surfers, Sonic Youth, Misfits, Robert Gordon, and plays a small tour with Winston Smith, while the artist shows his artworks.trax:

Johnny & The Hurricanes "The Definitive Collection" 1959-1965

Johnny & the Hurricanes were typical of the many landlocked instrumental R&B combos who were swept up in the surf craze of the early '60s. Based in Toledo, OH, and led by saxophonist Johnny Paris, the Hurricanes had virtually nothing in common with the reverb-drenched California surf sound, favoring instead a sort of raw, ragged frat-house R&B that was somewhat reminiscent of Junior Walker. This two-disc collection has everything you need, starting with the group's first hit, 1959's scorching "Crossfire," and two unlikely covers of an old folk tune, "Red River Valley" (done by the Hurricanes as "Red River Rock") and the minstrel song "Blue Tail Fly" (done as "Beatnik Fly"). A lot of the selections here draw on the same bag of tricks, but everything is so well executed that it hardly matters. This is indeed the definitive collection of this interesting combo. The Mo-dettes "The Story So Far..." 1980 + Peel Session 02.04.1980

"Ramona! Jane! Kate! June! The Mo-dettes are gonna steal your boyfriend!!!"The Mo-dettes (that's MODE-ettes, not modettes! These girls were no mods!) were an all-girl punk band formed in London in 1979. If you've heard early Raincoats or Slits stuff, or better yet LiLiPUT or Girls at Our Best, you should have an idea of what they sounded like. In fact Kate Korus, the Mo-dettes' guitarist even played with the Slits for a while, as well as the Castrators. Kate moved to London from the U.S. in the mid 70's and met June Miles-Kingston (who had previously played drums with Richard Dudanski in the Banks Of Dresden) on the set of The Great Rock 'n' Roll Swindle, where they were both working as musicians. Jane Crockford (the bassist) was also hanging around the GRnRS set, though I'm not sure if she was working, she might just have been there because she had been sharing a flat with Johnny Rotten and Sid Vicious after running away from home. Somebody eventually introduced the girls to Ramona Carlier (the lead singer), who had studied ballet in Switzerland before moving to London, apparently because there wasn't enough of a punk-rock scene back at home. And so the Mo-dettes were born. Hang on to your boyfriends.
The Mo-dettes played their first show at Acklam Hall, opening for the Vincent Units, and released their first single "White Mice", b/w "Masochistic Opposite" on their own label, Mode. They released several other singles after that and an album, but their first single remained their biggest hit. The group's last single came out in 1981, and though they did record some more material after this none of it was released. Shortly after the last 7" came out, the Mo-dettes got a second guitarist, Melissa Ritter, who played her first show as a Mo-dette just four days after joining the band. In February of 1982 Ramona quit and June sang for a couple months until Sue Slack joined as their new singer, but then Kate quit too, and as it was Kate that had started the whole thing in the first place the Mo-dettes didn't last much longer once she was gone.
In the late 80's June Miles-Kingston played drums for a band called the Communards, put out a solo single on Go! Discs and collaborated on some stuff with Fun Boy Three and Everything but the Girl. Kate Korus recorded a single with Jenny from the Belle Stars.
It seems that the Mo-dettes weren't appreciated by all of their female peers. In an interview with Nardwuar, the Human Serviette, Jane Wiedlin of the Go-Go's said "The Mo-Dettes were always really mean to us," when asked if the Go-go's had ever played shows with the Mo-dettes. Nardwuar asked Jane why and she elaborated "I don't know. I think they were just mean." Another band, the Dolly Mixture, had a song called "How come you're such a hit with the boys, Jane?" that is purportedly about Jane Crockford, and listening to the song one gets the impression that Jane Crockford was not a hit with the Dolly Mixture. I guess the Mo-dettes were not nice. The Mo-dettes:

A NEW FRONTIER!!! It all began in 1997: surf instros on one side, garage tunes on the other one. People screaming in the front line and Ray Daytona and Googoobombos right in the middle of the chaos. They’ve been eating and digesting Link Wray and Davie Allan, deconstructing The Ventures and rebuilding The Cramps; since they’ve been told “I like your rock’n’roll” by Deniz Tek (do you remember Radio Birdman?) they play faster and louder than ever......It took five 7”s and two LPs - collected and resumed in this great CD - to bring year 00’s in the heart of the Sixties (or maybe viceversa) and now they are ready to burst rock’n’roll in outer space. And it took the genius of Winston Smith (legendary cover artworks creator for Dead Kennedys, Lard, Jello Biafra, Green Day) to resume their love for Sci-Fi, Horror Z-movies and Hot Rod races in wonderful cover artworks.Ray Daytona & Googoobombos:

The Renegades "Story" 1978

In fact, Finland had a thriving psychedelic / garage beat scene in the 60s!This Birmingham beat group formed in 1964. They relocated to Italy in the mid-sixties and actually had several albums released out there, and in other countries such as Holland. Obviously popular in Finland, as well, they also appeared in a film Topralli ("Top Rally"), directed by Yrjo Tahtela in 1966. One of their more interesting releases was 13 Women, a Bill Haley hit, originally released in Europe, which found its way onto President for a 1968 45.The Renegades:

Miles Corbin "Sounds From The Tiki Hut" 2000

I love this album! It takes me back to the islands, basking in the sun, sipping a mai tai, w/ some local cats playing under the palapa. I'm a big fan of the Aqua Velvets, and Miles playing is stunninly gorgeous on this cd as well. - amazonIt takes spades of talent to create music as beautiful as this without the aid of layered mixing, over-hyped production and in Miles' case, even lyrics. Even if you're not a big surf fan, but are looking for a rage-dump disc, this is it! If you happen to love surf to begin with, you will be pleasently surprised. Although, I do want to mention that this is not a full-blooded surf album. It is mainly sparkling reverb with occasional acoustic amid a tapestry of soft bongo-like percussion. No one plays as clean or precisely as Miles. His songwriting capabilities are the real treat here though. Haunting, dramatic but always relaxing, it dosen't get more mellow or exotic than this. - By Eric A. Morgantrax:

"Just Shuckin' Around" 1953-1963 Wild & Crazy L.A. R&B;

If, like me, you sometimes get a wild hair up your ass to hear some totally inappropriate and thoroughly enjoyable wild ass music, this is a candidate. This 24 track collection from one of Los Angeles' most obsessive record collectors has some wonderful and completely obscure black rock & roll from the glory days. Names you may have heard include Kid Thomas, Willie Egan & Chuck Higgins who share the spotlight with groups like the TORMENTORS, MOJO WATSON and the man who the movie "American Pimp" was fashioned after, CHARLES SIMS (aka Fillmore Slim). If you were to buy these tracks individually, you would be set back a few thousand...providing you could find them. (Bluebeat Music)Just Shuckin' Around serves up two dozen slabs of wild-west R&B, baked to perfection in the Los Angeles sun. This is R&B at its most raucous and uninhibited, with none of the polish and sophistication of radio-friendly soul music. Instead, the music positively reeks of gin, violence, and sex, a potent reminder of why white conservative audiences found it so alarming. Culled from the small independent labels dotting the postwar L.A. landscape, these songs are both timeless and alien, as if beamed in from another galaxy. Add to the package comprehensive liner notes and a center foldout depicting the legendary Flash Record Store, and it becomes essential for listeners seeking an antidote to the antiseptic sheen of contemporary urban music. Highlights include Gil Bernal's "The Whip," Johnny Wright's "Wine Head," and Flash Terry's "Cool It." (Jason Ankeny, Allmusic)

Kaiser George & The Hi-Risers "Transatlantic Dynamite!" 2006 + "Buzz Around With The Hi-Risers" EP 2006

What happens when you mix British Invasion Beat Pop with real Stateside Rock 'n' Roll? Don't try it at home folks, because Spinout Records have already conducted the experiment for you in the relative safety of the recording studio and the result is imprinted on this disc. Be sure to handle with caution for it truly is "Transatlantic Dynamite".Scotland's Kaiser George and Rochester NY's The Hi-Risers had a "jolly good time" and a "blast" during the recording of these fourteen brand new originals, so much so that it seems certain that we can look forward to more releases in the not too distant future. The janitor at Rochester's famed Saxon Recording Studio was heard to remark that it was "as if John Lennon had joined forces with Buddy Holly's Crickets". True? You be the judge, dear listener! One thing's for sure, Kaiser George and the Hi-Risers are an explosive combination when it comes to unbridled Pop 'n' Roll performed with irresistably carefree abandon.trax:

Guantanamo Baywatch "Darling... It's Too Late" 2015

If you’ve been searching for your perfect summer soundtrack, you may look no further.Portland's surfin' party punks Guantanamo Baywatch have learned a few tricks in the three years since they released their first album, and 2015's Darling... It's Too Late is in practically every respect an improvement on their well-meaning but not so thrilling debut, Chest Crawl. Guantanamo Baywatch have worked up a better set of songs this time out; "Jungle Bride," "Sea of Love," and "Beat Has Changed" outweigh anything on the group's debut, and guitarist Jason Powell has not only sharpened his six-string skills, he's come up with some snazzy instrumental numbers, and "Raunch Stomp" and "Shenanigans" should separate the cool cats from the ho-dads in no time flat. (Powell also cooks up a nice cover of Eddie & the Showmen's "Mr. Rebel" for the historically minded.) The production and engineering (courtesy of Ben Coleman, Justin McNeight, and Ed Rawls) are cleaner and tougher this time out, and bassist Chevelle Super Sport and drummer Christopher Michael Scott are a stronger, steadier rhythm section after a few years' practice. And while slightly bent surf music is still this band's stock in trade, the slinky R&B-influenced weeper "Too Late" (including a guest appearance by singer Curtis Harding) and the stomping dance number "Boy Like Me" show they're adding new levels to their game and making it work. At just 31 minutes, Darling... It's Too Late feels a bit like a party that broke up before it really got into fifth gear, but this album is a much better expression of Guantanamo Baywatch's potential than their first long-player, and anyone who wished GB's music was as good as their ideas on Chest Crawl gets the payoff on Darling... It's Too Late. - AllMusic Review by Mark Demingtrax:

Ray Daytona & Googoobombos "a wild shot of..." 2000

The band is born in June, 1997, when four lads from Siena province in Tuscany decide to join in to play instrumental garage and surf tunes, revisited with an aggressive and modern attitude…...They take inspiration from Link Wray, The Sonics, The Cramps and those obscure garage bands from anthologies such as Back from the Grave, Nuggets and Pebbles; their aesthetic and cultural imaginary, fed by 50s and 60s B-Movies, brings them to choose nicknames: Ray Daytona on guitar, Madison Wheeler on drums and vocals, Doctor D on rhythm guitar and vocals, Red Razor on bass. Go-go dancers and the “space” sound of the Theremin often accompany their first gigs. In less than one year, thanks to an intense live activity and to four singles published in vinyl by Italian and European labels, the band bursts into the underground musical scene and is recognized by the media. In 1999 they play for the first time at the Festival Beat and soon after they sign for Mad Driver Records from Torino to record their first album.
Published in January 2000, A Wild Shot of… with its title pays homage to Henry Mancini and his soundtracks, while musically is a compendium of the music of the Sixties, from surf to garage punk, and is dedicated to the memory of Screaming Lord Sutch, met by Ray Daytona and Googoobombos a few months before he died. During the recordings Rosie replaces Red Razor on bass guitar.
After a year of gigs around Italy the bands records Space Age Traffic Jam, a new garage-punk release, with a more direct sound, made more solid also by the sound engineer in studio, David Lenci. The cover is an artwork by the American artist Winston Smith, known for his works with Dead Kennedys, Green Day, No Means No and others, with whom the band starts a long cooperation and friendship. Meanwhile the band keeps on playing live, opening for such band as Radio Birdman and Nashville Pussy.trax:

John Fogerty's Blue Ridge Rangers Record Collection; The Original Versions & The Blue Ridge Rangers (Original 1973 Album)

Owing Fantasy Records one more album after the break-up of Creedence Clearwater Revival, JOHN FOGERTY decided to throw his fans for a loop by delivering a record of country classics under the name the BLUE RIDGE MOUNTAIN RANGERS. Fogerty had dipped his toe in country influences on a few songs on CCR’s later records but this time he decided to jump in head first.  The 1973 release did not even feature his name on the cover but the sound was unmistakably the former Creedence leader, this time playing all the instruments himself. It would have provided CCR’s audience with a much-needed lesson in C&W history but the album peaked at #47 on the charts (after nothing but Top 10 albums by Creedence). The songs on this collection are mostly the original versions but all of them are the versions that inspired Fogerty.(Mark R.)The Original Versions trax:

Gallon Drunk "Tonite... The Singles Bar" 1991

Throughout their entire career, every single GALLON DRUNK have released has achieved Single Of The Week in either the NME or MELODY MAKER.One thing that can't be said about Gallon Drunk is that they're easy to listen to -- far from it. The sound the band produces verges on coherency at times, but without enough of a focus to actually slap a definition on it. Tom Waits, the Pogues, the Sex Pistols, a hundred surf bands, the Kingsmen, the Troggs, the Stranglers and a half-dozen drunk Irish poets...
Gallon Drunk have elements of all the above, with the result that the sound veers from repulsive to crazily attractive in a very primitive way. Giving this collection of their single releases more than a fighting chance is worth the work, though. While tracks like Snakepit, hailing from their early days, are raw and obnoxious, there are also serious surprises and eye-openers to be had -- Gallon Drunk's version of Miserlou is a slow, dark pulse that makes it the high point of the album.
This is wild-eyed primitive rock & roll in no uncertain terms, the sort of thing that can easily make the average listener uncomfortable. Consequently, it's definitely worth checking out. There aren't too many bands as seriously deranged as this one. ~ Steven McDonald, All Music GuideGallon Drunk:
