The Wet Tones "Mucho Reverbo" 2005

A band I've been digging hugely for the last couple of months is Italy's the Wet-Tones. These guys get NO recognition in the USA, but their debut CD "Mucho Reverbo" is REALLY good! Not quite reaching the lofty heights of "Dumb Loud Hollow Twang", but definitely one of the best surf CDs I've heard this year. - review by BrianAnother very trad 4-piece band, with a very appropriate CD title. The Wet-Tones will especially appeal to the fans of Satan's Pilgrims, the Nebulas and the Penetrators. Ten original songs and one cover (an instro surf version of the horrendously annoying and corny folk standard "If I Had a Hammer" - however, they manage to make it sound listenable! No mean feat, I might add...). The originals are consistently very good, combining great tones, a range of moods, often great melodies and imaginative arrangements. The highlights for me are: "The 7th Wave", an ultra-energetic, exoticly-tinged DD-like rocker that features a pretty spanish-guitar intro and the second verse with the acoustic guitar in the forefront, which was really cool - haven't heard anything like that in a long time. "Playa Piranha" sounds like it just escaped from a Penetrators album, all happy and playful with a big dose of reverb! "Lightning Strike" starts off sounding like the Fathoms or the Boss Martians, moving into a HEAVY DD-like part, and then back to heavily muted lead and rhythm, again followed by some intense double-picking. What a great way to combine both the DD and Astronauts schools of the surf sound. "Bonecrasher" reminds me a bit of some Space Cossacks stuff (if I may say so) with a beautiful double-picked melody that's not overly aggressive. "Surfin' the Casbah" starts off with a familiar melody, but then moves into some really aggressive and heavily reverbed double-picking that's just a pleasure to wallow in. The album comes to an untimely end (the whole thing is less than half an hour long) with a gorgeous ballad "Mucho Reverbo" that sounds a lot like the Bambi Molesters, or maybe some of Satan's Pilgrims quieter moments. Again, featuring an achingly beautiful and evocative mino-key melody, it's as good a ballad as it gets, especially as it shifts to a major key and adds a big dose of acoustic rhythm guitar at the end to bring the album to a close. Nicely recorded, with the authentic surf sound (mostly Jazzmasters with an occasional Jag, Twin amps, I think?). Great artwork, too. I'm really impressed with this album and this band. I've been in contact with one of their guitarists, Bruno, for many years, and he is a really humble guy, always telling me that they're not that good. What a crock! From what I heard here, I'd say that these guys are among the top ten surf bands in the world today. I haven't heard any other Italian surf band that I liked nearly as much as these guys. They're the real thing. from: http://www.surfguitar101.com/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=74

The Barracudas "Garbage Dump Tapes - House Of Kicks Sessions 1982" 1990

Formed in London, England in 1978 as a neo-surfing band their lone UK Top 40 entry in 1980 was the derivative "Summer Fun".Wills made a pair of albums with a group called the Fortunate Sons (originally a trio, but later a quartet with Chris Wilson), whose bassist wound up in the Barracudas when Wills and Gluck decided to restart the band in early '89. The first order of business was to polish up the tapes of the lost second album from 1982. House of Kicks' belated release as Garbage Dump isn't exactly the Rosetta Stone of '80s music, but it is a potent dose of solid garage rock, albeit without the same tuneful charm as Mean Time (with which it shares eight songs); in hindsight, that underscores the roles Chris Wilson and Pete Gage played on that album. Overall, the biggest failings are the vocals, which are hoarsely unattractive and rather weak in the harmony department, and the unimaginative, overly nostalgic production style. [Jon Young/Ira Robbins]The Barracudas:
Jeremy Gluck (vocals), Robin Wills (guitar & vocals), David Buckley (bass & vocals) and Nick Turner (drums)

ROY HEAD & THE TRAITS "Treat Me Right" 1965

Actually a country and rock vocalist rather than an R&B; star, Roy Head nevertheless cut one of the great pieces of up-tempo soul in the mid-'60s. "Treat Her Right" on Back Beat made it to number two on the R&B; charts and number two pop, and the fact that Head was white was soft-pedaled in R&B; circles while the song made its way up the charts. That performance alone was enough to qualify Head as one of the finest blue-eyed soul singers of the 1960s. But in fact, Roy was one of the most versatile stylists of the era, capable of hard R&B;/rock tunes (even cutting material with a pre-fame Johnny Winter on backup guitar); mournful, soul-tinged country; and straight R&B; and blues covers. Head was also an excellent entertainer, and his live shows of the period even included some fancy footwork clearly under the influence of James Brown. (by Ron Wynn & Richie Unterberger)traxfromwax:

Big Guitars From Texas "Trash, Twang, & Thunder" 1985

Austin in the mid-80's was a happenin' place. The local punk scene was hoppin', and thanks to Stevie Ray Vaughan and others Austin's long suffering roots 'n' blues scene was finally getting some national recognition. A bevy of six-string wizards known collectively as Big Guitars From Texas made a couple of records that celebrated the joy of ax. Virtually everybody who was anyone back then participated; Big Guitars From Texas " Trash, Twang, & Thunder" featured Frankie Camaro (Dino Lee, Dragstrip, Moto-X), Don Leady (LeRoi Bros, Tail Gators), Evan Johns (Leroi Bros, H Bombs), Danny Freeman (Southern Feeling, Cobras, Lou Ann Barton), Drummer Mike Buck (Fab T-Birds, LeRoi Bros) and Bassist Keith Ferguson (Fab T-Birds, Tail Gators). The songs covered a wide range of styles and were strictly instrumental. - from: http://www.randysrodeo.com/texas/big_guitars.phptraxfromwax:

THE WILDEBEESTS "Annie Get Your GNU"

The band that features (ex)-members of the MILKSHAKES, KAISERS and THANES, can knock any and all others off the blocks anyday, anywhere, and at anytime.
A Gnu-sound classic and bluesy beat-punk masterpiece.
Look out, here come those Wildebeests again with a whole new bunch of tunes to make you the listener perk up and take heed. Whether it be 'rivvum and bloos', 'tank pok', 'instro-mental larkabout', or 'skewed sick-stays styled beat-noise', these Lairds can KO with the best of them, fuck it, let's make with the fact that The Wildebeests, the band that features (ex)-members of the MILKSHAKES, KAISERS and THANES, can knock any and all others off the blocks anyday, anywhere, and at anytime. After a pile of single, EP and album releases on Norton Records, Sympathy For The Record Industry and Smartguy Records in the US the Wildebeests have returned to Germany and Screaming Apple (who coincidently released their first single way back in 1995) to release this the groups 4th long-player and has taken many a long long while to arrive (often thought to have been lost in the peat bogs deep in the Tripe valley) and for that you have not to thank the efforts of the 3 goons who, heretoforeandthereafter, should be referred to as the artists, but for the efforts of record company blunders and problemos reaching near and far across the desert-scapes of days, nights, weeks, nay months I say, bouncing here and there almost resulting in a veritable record label tennis! The Lairds of the Boss Racket themselves had almost given up hope of this LP ever seeing the needle of a record player... Holy gnu, its years now since the artists first threw this lot of rumbling artefacts onto magnetic tape after at the very least 3 long minutes of rehearsal and preparation. What could be better? Well just listen to the dim simplicity of 'Lucinda' and the untamed beauty of 'Your Mind' to say nothing of the wracked emotion of 'It Ain't Right' to get the measure of what these sensitive artists had to wade thru in order to bring their fans a steaming product of damn near perfection. The Barracudas "Wait For Everything" 1989

"I was heavily into The Stooges. But also, supremely, The Beach Boys... I adored The Beach Boys, The Who and The Stooges, and collages of photos of them adorned my walls. I also doted on The Raspberries, The Kinks, Nuggets, the Stones, to a lesser extent the late-period Beatles (I still love Abbey Road with a passion), and I also dug a lot of obscure music I was turned on to from various quarters. I did not really engage The Byrds until I knew Robin, who turned me onto folk-rock per se. I could detail my initiation into the Groovies and other key influences... but I do have some respect for the readership." (from an interview with Jeremy Gluck)The Barracudas signed to Canadian indie Shake! who tested the market for decade old fish bands by releasing the single "I Thought You Sounded That Way Yesterday" with "Remember" on the flip in January of 1991, but it wasn’t until February of 1992 that there was finally a new full length Barracudas release... nearly 3 years after they decided to get back together. But the result justified the wait, and maybe that explains the title of the new CD. Produced by Andy Shernoff (although he isn’t credited), Wait For Everything was one of the most convincing reunion efforts I’ve ever heard, and probably my favorite Barracudas long player. It has a fabulous batch of tunes; the title track, the nostalgic "I Thought You Sounded That Way Yesterday", the slinky, driving "Outside My Door", the anthemic pair of "Throwin’ It All Away" and "One From The Heart", and finally that personal touch of "The Best Years" at the end…this is a hell of a great recording. Gluck’s singing has really matured; he’s harnessed that quivering tone of his to emphasize key parts of the lyrics better than on any other Barracudas effort. Robin Wills, who always wrote the majority of Barracudas tunes, turns in his best set ever here. And his guitar playing brings that 12 string Byrds jangle firmly into the post-punk era; this is where California rock should have headed in the early 70s when it somehow detoured into the Eagles. There’s that "Chestnut Mare" sort of feel mixed with a power that the Byrds could never have matched given the equipment and production values of their day.
But Jeremy had suggested to me that he wasn’t that crazy about Wait For Everything and when I pressed him about his reasons, he replied, "Ah, I dunno...it could and should have been so much better. But I do like some of it. Yes, some songs work, but for me this album is largely a major disappointment. Apart from working with Andy Shernoff of heroes The Dictators, I could quite happily have forgone the whole thing."
Which would have left the music world a poorer place. But unfortunately, unless some incredible new development occurs, that CD will prove to be the last hurrah for the Barracudas. They did struggle on until 1993, when they played their last ever gig in Madrid and taped the show for a CD release on Spain’s Impossible Records. Jeremy probably gives it as fair an evaluation as anyone could. from: http://www.nkvdrecords.com/barracud.htm

The Screaming Blue Messiahs "Totally Religious" 1989

"All we did was live and die, underneath the big, big sky."I recently dug out my SBM CDs after fifteen plus years and what a treat they are--powerful guitar work, pounding drums, chunky rhythms all layered with Bill Carter's apocalyptic lyrics. Totally Religious is the SBMs strongest album - and that's saying a lot as the others are well worth owning as well - with at least four knockout songs that stay with you: Four Engines Burning, Mega City 1, Wall of Shame and Big Big Sky. Any one of these tracks could have made the album stand out.
Think Clash meet guitar rock with a hint of rockabilly. Terrific production, full and loud but not overdone. This is great stuff. - Max R. Tomlinson (San Francisco, Ca United States)
The band continues it's wall of sound roar. I love this band for their sonic onslaught. Sadly none of the albums approach the aural maelstrom of their live show. This is an unprocessed vinyl rip. - Don K.
The foundation was the muscular rhythm section of Kenny Harris (drums) and Chris Thompson (bass). On top of this rode Bill Carter's almost stream of consciousness vocals and his stuttering, howling guitar.

LAVERNE BAKER "Real Gone Gal" (Atlantic R&B; 1953-1962)

LaVern Baker was one of the most successful female R&B; vocalists of the 1950s. In the tradition of Ma Rainey and Bessie Smith, Baker's blues-driven, gospel-tinged vocals paved the way for future female rock and rollers. However, unlike the more liberal 1990s, Baker rose to stardom in a decade where songs recorded by black artists were termed "race records" and thus received little airplay on radio stations. "Whitewashing" was a common practice in which white vocalists would re-record a black artist's single note for note and popularize them beyond the original version's success. Despite these barriers, particularly the incessant competition from white cover artist Georgia Gibbs, Baker succeeded. With novelty rock hits "Tweedlee Dee," "I Cried a Tear," "Bop-Ting-a-Ling" and "Jim Dandy," Baker secured her place in pop culture's collective repertoire and her role as pioneer female recording artist.traxfromwax:

THE STOMACH MOUTHS "Something Weird" 1986

"THE ORIGINAL WYLD AND UNTAMED GARAGE PUNK FROM SWEDEN!"A wild trip with the original Swedish garage punks. The Swedish garage punk rock boom really began back in the 1980s. One of the pioneering bands were the Stomachmouths who road the crest of the 80s garage wave between the years 1984 - 1987 becoming one of the leading Swedish exponent of the genre at the time.
They toured Europe several times with their wailing fuzz guitars, screeching Farfisa organ , caveman drums, thumping bass and ultra snotty vocals on full throttle, performing some of the wildest shows ever witnessed. But after three years of endless travels and partying the hectic lifestyle had taken it's toll on the band and they all scattered in different directions. But their musical influence lived on and is now strongly felt in current Swedish bands although none of the Stomachmouths records have ever been reissued on CD before. The Stomach Mouth:

The Halibuts "Life On The Bottom" 1996

"Fun, Entertaining, & Original"While it would be easy enough to stuff the Halibuts into the retro surf-band file, a quick listen to this shows them to be a top-notch instrumental combo with a propensity for handling a diverse number of styles. While the reverb stun-gun attack of the guitars veers them into retro territory, their takes on Gershwin's "Summertime" and "Istanbul" make them a band with a little more to offer when you've overdosed on every cover version of "Misirlou" there is.
