"Halloween Hootenanny" 1998 VA

It's got surf, rockabilly, and even some macabre mambo music. This is hauntingly hip halloween party music you'll want to play all year round. You just need one look at Rob Zombie to know that the guy knows a thing or two about Halloween. He really proves his mettle--and his metal, for that matter--on this loud, garish, downright fun collection of rip-roaring devil's music. There's actually very little to be afraid of, to tell the truth--unless, that is, you have a phobia about the kind of goofy good times laid down by Zombie and pals like Rocket from the Crypt, Satan's Pilgrims, and the wrestling-masked power-surf combo Los Straitjackets (who turn in a hypercharged "Munsters Theme"). The garishly groovy package, which features some of Zombie's most over-the-top cartoon illustrations, is rife with haunting hoedowns like the Dead Elvi's "The Creature Stole My Surfboard." More fun than a coven meeting any day. --David Sprague

Hasil Adkins "Look At That Caveman Go!" 1993

The Wild Man takes the heart of rock'n' roll, impales it on a stick, and laughs at it for the rest of the record. A hellacious head cuttin' session recorded live n' wild at some of the nation's hottest nite spots! The commodity Caruso wails again, naturally!Holy smoke! The Haze is a true American treasure. Doubt it? Take yerself a listen. Bite off this chunk of calamine-marinated live live live trash-art from the Appalacian Elvis. A lovely set wherein he makes certain that we know Miss Molly "sure likes to ball", he hunches-up the classic "Walkin' The Dog" by stripping it down to its essential two lines "If you don't know how to do it/I'll show you how to walk the dog". Better wear yer teflon underoos, cuz "Boo Boo the Cat" curls up in yer lap and sharpens her claws. This IS the true live Haze in his natural habitat, even though it may not include some best-loved classics like "She Said", "No More Hot Dogs" or "We Gotta Date". Still essential listening. Look for Hasil's inimitable narration in the low-budget independent film classic DIE YOU ZOMBIE BASTARDS! Long live The King. - Review by "haigd" (Massachusetts)

Evan Johns & The H-Bombs "Giddy Up Girl" 1980 - 7"/EP

"As enjoyable as Evan Johns' musical output has been over the last 25 years, to me he has never matched his first EP for sheer trashy fun. Find out for yourself here..." - Uncle JimJerry Lee Lewis worshiper (who claims to have blown his hero off the stage on a good night!) and certified lunatic of the geetar, Evan Johns simply personifies the most incendiary and rebellious elements of rock'n'roll. A teenaged Virginia hellion who apprenticed in the DC bar circuit under the legendary Danny Gatton, Johns formed the H-Bombs in 1979 and made the reelin' rockabilly 10-inch Giddy Up Girl in 1980. The four songs are roughly recorded, but blueprint the searing six-string mayhem that has marked Johns' best work. - Scott McCaughey / Ira RobbinsEvan Johns & The H-Bombs:

"JERK! SHAKE! AND VIBRATE!" VA

Given the hot little groovers on here, it's hard not to jerk, shake, and vibrate when listening to this set -- as the collection's stuffed with loads of funky soul tunes! The package dips into the far end of the 60s indie scene -- going for obscure 45s issued on small labels that mostly never got proper distribution -- with a sound that's informed by the harder and deeper soul artists of the time, but carried off with a lot more energy and pure raw power than the acts that ever made it on the radio! CD version features 24 tracks in all -- with titles that include "I Do The Jerk" by Bil Pinkney, "The James Brown Bougelou" by Little Genie Brooks, "Mister CC" by Jim Pipkins & The Boss Five, "Let's Monkey Again" by The Persians, "Thread The Needle" by Al White & The Hi-Liters, and "Funky Funky Horse" by Lester Young & The California Playboys (Dusty Groove)trax:

Evan Johns And The H-Bombs "Rollin' Through The Night" 1986

A CERTIFIABLY INSANE MASTERPIECE!Evan Johns and the H-Bombs circa 1986, were raving lunatics. There has never been a wilder band or album than "Rolling Through The Night". As a teenager Evan Johns learned the fine art of wild guitar playing when Washington D.C. guitar legend Danny Gatton took him under his wing. After touring with Gatton, Johns moved to Austin and formed the H-Bombs. He went into the studio detirmened to make an album of relentless rockabilly abandon. I'd say mission accomplished. He was never able to come close to making anything this good again. From the opening cut "Vacation Time" where he sounds like he's singing through a megaphone, and knowing Evan Johns he probably was. To the last cut "Stop Loving All The World Girl", this album never lets up. There's no slow dance numbers on this cd. My favorite songs here: All of em. But the songs that would have made it on the radio in a perfectly insane world: "Madhouse" with it's 2 for 1 overdubbed guitar purposely clashing with itself in twin leads. This one's so dadgum good it's scary. "Sugar Cookie", maybe the fastest rockabilly song ever scorched into vinyl. This one is outstandingly nuts with it's fantastic guitar pickin'. He changes pace a little with "You're A Cutie" and offers up some cool farfisa organ driving the song along ? and the Mysterians style. This one ends all too quick. The best of the 3 instrumentals here is "Where'd You Get That Bruise". Man, Johns really knew how to name his songs. It's a great instrumental that'll leave a scar on ya long after you hear it. "Taking Care Of My Home" is the closest thing to a country tune that Johns gets. Wild country that is. It would fit right in on a Southern Culture On The Skids record. "Saving Grace", man I love this little tune. Probably the slowest of these warp speed diddys. It's got a very contagious rhythm to it that gives you the feeling you heard it somewhere before. That's when you know a song is really a good one. It has the best guitar playing on it since those legendary Danny Gatton days. "If I Had My Way" which also appeared on a later album, but it was never as good as this version. That's only to name a few of the 15 generous cuts offered here. There is no doubt this is the most overlooked album of the 80's. It deserved much more recognition. I think it's the best roots rock record ever made, and believe me, I've heard a lot of em. It's easily a "Desert Island Disc, that's sure to rattle the coconuts off the palm trees. Outstanding! - Reviewer: Patrick Earley (Edmond, Oklahoma USA)

THE SHAMS "Take Off" 2001

The Shams' debut disc is a cave-stompin' garage rock collection that owes a huge debt to the Seeds, the Velvet Underground, the Stooges, and anyone else who woke up the neighborhood on a Saturday morning somewhere in mid-'60s middle America with a spirited blast of bass, guitar, drums, battered keyboards, and scratchy vocals.Take Off is an enjoyable lo-fi affair chock-full of cheesy organ sounds, way too much reverb (which is a good thing), amplifier buzz, and four guys looking to meet girls. Each track is a rollicking pastiche of eighth- and 16th-note rhythms that are rendered slightly out of time and just a pinch out of key. Down, but not out of the mix, Zach Gabbard howls à la Mick Jagger and Jim Morrison, as did countless musically inclined delinquent teenagers in decades past. His partners in crime kick out the jams as if their lives depended on it, relying primarily on simplicity and volume. Kudos to the boys for covering Alan Tousssaint's dirty funky "Get out My Life Woman" and the goofy space jam that somehow found its way into the bridge of "I Get High." As long as there are concrete enclosures for parking, and as long as there are young men who want to be rock stars and impress the cute blonde cheerleader in chemistry class, there will be bands like the Shams. Long live rock & roll. - Review by Tom Semioli (All Music Guide)trax:

THE OUTTA PLACE "We’re Outta Place" 1984

Of NYC's short-lived but plentiful litter of garage revivalists, this quintet was the last to form, the first to reach vinyl and probably the only ones young enough not to have been around for the real thing. On their debut, "New York's own cave teens" display plenty of raunch, ripping through seven songs in the most distorted mono imaginable, with cheesy two-finger organ bleats and Mike Chandler's epileptic-fit shrieks. They also display plenty of chutzpah: changing two words of Chob's garage classic "we're Pretty Quick" gets Chandler a writing credit and the band a titular theme song. (Trouser Press)The Outta Place "We're Outta Place" Midnight 103 was the first record to ever come out of the N.Y.C. garage psych punk scene. It preceded the Vipers and Fuzztones singles by nine months, and created quite a stir from those more mature garage bands who could not understand why the "cave teens" had been elected and selected first.
The answer to those questions came soon with world-wide acclaim. The mini-LP immediately hit number 1 in the alternate charts in Italy, France, and Holland, and received rave reviews in the U.K., U.S. and Canada.
Chandler's vocals and the Outta Place's straight fresh delivery will probably never be equaled or surpassed. (Midnight Records.com)traxfromwax:

"From the Medway Towns Delta: 13 tunes, all under 2 minutes - short and painless! A family afffair!" - Mr NoonTHE DISCORDS - vintage shenanigans from the house of Hangman. Recorded back in 1986, and produced by legendary Prisoner's member Graham Day, this encapsulates the essence of the world-famous Medway Sound.
We have the equally legendary Wild Billy Childish - former Milkshakes, Mighty Caesars, and now Headcoats, (and of course father of Hangman records) to thank for salvaging the work of the DISCORDS from the annals of history, and the same demi-god to thank for recognising the raw garage punk power of DODSON's DOGS.

ROY WOOD'S WIZARD "Introducing Eddy & The Falcons" 1974

"Brilliant concept hits on all cylinders"On this, the most cohesive album of Roy Wood's career with Wizzard (or solo for that matter), he hit upon an idea to celebrate the music and artists that inspired him in the 1950s and 1960s. And so, with entirely new and original material, Wood and band set out to pay tribute sonically to artists such as Del Shannon, Elvis Presley, Phil Spector, Neil Sedaka, and many more. Not only is it credible in terms of approximating the vibes, but there are some excellent tunes here. "This is the Story of My Love" is an absolutely gorgeous perfect pop song as is "Everyday I Wonder." I love the Duane Eddy tribute instrumental, "Eddy's Rock." There are some nice retro-rockers here also, including "Brand New 88," "I Dun Lotsa Cryin Over You," and especially "We're Gonna Rock n' Roll Tonite." Give it a go, and discover why Roy Wood and Wizzard were all the rage in the UK from 1972-1975.ROY WOOD'S WIZARD:

THE TIKI MEN "Twelve Dusty Diamonds" 1995

The Tiki Men pioneered the great West Coast surf explosion of the early 90’s, influenced by and playing alongside the likes of the world-famous Phantom Surfers at such world-famous venues as San Francisco’s The Purple Onion. The Tiki Men embraced surf music years before its nation wide comeback on concert circuits, soda ads, and latenight talkshows; and they embraced the Pacific island tiki culture long before tiki masks and coconuts became a staple of the Capitol Records lounge exotica revival. They did all this, played tons of shows, recorded a historic LP, and got out before anyone had a chance to analyze them. The Tiki Men's Twelve Dusty Diamonds chronicles the dark, dirty, raw adventures of a wave-loving surfer stranded in the desert. Armed with only some beer and a guitar, his journey is all about finding meaning in a waterless world. Well, maybe I listened to it too many times, too late at night. Either way, this is one hella fine album of instrumental surf music. The Tiki Men combine undeniably catchy hooks with rough lo-fi production in an album which varies in mood and intensity, taking you from irreverent excitement to loneliness and despair, and back again. As the title suggests, this is a musical diamond in the rough- check it out.traxfromwax:

M.O.T.O. "Blast Of Silence" 2007 + "Some Thing" 2007 - 7"/45rpm

"Once again, your drunken -SuicidekinG- appears. Today we're going to dig a bit of this fat mo herf ck r's 7'' archive. Today's up is two seven inchers by the amazing Masters Of The Obvious, or more familiarly M.O.T.O..... First, the Blast of Silence lets us know MOTO as i personally know it. Raw powerpoppish, but still extramelodically punk. Either way, amazing shit. I hope that few of you readers will go out and buy MOTO records because of this upload. Paul Caporino, the greatest songwriter since Lennon, still works at used records store and does this for nearly nothing. And has been doing it since the beginning of the eighties. As a proof, you can still order copied c-tapes from Mr. Caporino through MOTO website. The vocal melodies of "Blast of Silence" and "I used to tell the truth" are just merely a glimpse of this man's songwriting capabilities.
Well. Some of his work is just drum-machine, bassist , 4-track recorder and him. Or sometimes not even a bassist. So the other 7'', "Some Things" is closer to that reality. You can hear the enormous songwriting and chorusbuilding skills through that cheap drum-machine. And that buzz of noise. But still. Caporino IS the new Lennon. (please, don't kill him for that:)
For first-MOTO-timers i recommend to listen only to Blast of Silence, since that's what MOTO sounds like, when it's a band and not just Paul.. Yeh. Caporino. Not Mackartni or hows that spelled again..." -SuicidekinG-

Evan Johns & The H-Bombs "Rockit Fuel Only" 1991

Rockit Fuel Only!, while allowing for the broad stylistic whims of its creator (like a surprising compassionate piano ballad, "Prove It to Each Other"), also rocks harder than anything since Rollin' Through the Night. "Juvenile Delinquent," "Boogie Disease" and "Little Scene Setter" are among the rip-it-up corkers that keep Evan Johns among rock'n'roll's guitar elite.I know there's a lot of folks on Twilightzone who dig Evan Johns' records. Hell, I'm one of them. This one is from 1991 and came out on RYKO. Another infectious high energy Evan Johns creation. Evan's howlin' vocals? Check. Rockin' tunes? Check. Great songwriting? Check. Is it as good as Rollin' Through The Night? Probably not. What makes this one for me are the slower numbers, especially "Prove It To Each Other". The singing on this number is incredible! This is the kind of song Bob Dylan should be writing now. Speaking of which, does Bob Dylan's voice today sounding like Evan Johns in the 80's? There's also plenty of guitar boogie and garage hillbilly on this. Just ignore the echo on the drums. Enjoy! "Rockit Fuel Only" - fill 'er up! - By Tiger Tiger

Evan Johns & The H-Bombs "Outtakes and Rehearsals" ca. 1982

"Here is a recently ripped cassette tape of Evan Johns and the H-Bombs rehearsals and outtakes, recorded ca. 1982. A few titles I had to guess at, and the break in "Vacation Time" is just how it was on the tape. Still, it's worth a listen because this is Evan at his most raw and profane!" - Uncle JimJerry Lee Lewis worshiper (who claims to have blown his hero off the stage on a good night!) and certified lunatic of the geetar, Evan Johns simply personifies the most incendiary and rebellious elements of rock'n'roll. It wasn't until a move to Austin, a stint with the LeRoi Brothers and a Grammy nomination for his featured participation in the Big Guitars From Texas Trash Twang and Thunder compilation LP that Johns' name began to spread across the land he'd already criss-crossed time and time again. - trouserpress

The Apemen "Are You Being Surfed?" 1994

Holland's Apemen are one of the loudest surf bands around. They live in the garage, play with the big boys in the shore break, and pummel every competitor. Their recordings ooze edge and spunk.Zap! From nowhere comes a release to burn the very wax off your favorite surfboard. Just when you thought it was safe to take a paddle in the old briny along come The Apemen with their flame-throwing guitars: Who are they? How did they get this good? Will there be kippers for breakfast? All of these questions will be answered in time, but meanwhile pick yourself up this stunning debut CD. It tears off with frantic versions of The Creations’ “Crash” and The Original Surfaris’ “Moment Of Truth” - doing themselves and the old surf sea-horses proud. Super version of “Pipeline” with the lead being Dick Daled and taken at a slower than usual tempo to increase the dramatic tension inherent in the classic melody. Eight of the titles are penned by The Apes and excellent they are too. invasion Of The Apemen” starts off so brilliantly with a clever guitar on guitar build-up that you wonder how they can follow it when in comes a wall of thundering Dick Dale style lead guitar that answers no problem. “Crunch” is inspired by “Caterpillar Crawl” and burns just as brightly overflowing with lashings of scorching guitar work - there is even a brief touch of “Wipe Out” in a drum solo’. Just to show you that they know their stuff. “Hard And Sole” cops its beginning from “Out Of Limits” before taking off in a completely new direction of their own. “Apes Of Spades”. not surprisingly, has something of Link Wray about it - all resounding chords and a dark, menacing lead. “Arabian Beachstomp” cheeks out the action among the downtown pyramids with our heroes surfin’ on the desert sands in true “Miserlou” fashion. “Creature From The Haunted Sea is a ponderous, atmospheric instro with some tantalizing sound effects that really do suggest something quite nasty emerging from the ocean. Lock your door when you play it. This is a most exciting release, probably the best new surf music since the heady days of the revival back in the eighties when Jon & The Nightriders, The Wedge, and The Surf Raiders were just breaking through. Yes, it has that kind of impact. If you care about surf you must get this. - Pipeline-Magazine UK (Dave Burke)trax:

Eugene Chadbourne & Evan Johns "Terror Has Some Strange Kinfolk" 1992

Hillbilly hijinks meets crazed city slicker, and boy do them fellas rock! Ex-Shockabilly protest folkster meets deranged rockabilly guitarist for a little Deliverance-style backwoods shenanigans.Terror Has Some Strange Kinfolk, the second collaboration between Eugene Chadbourne and Evan Johns, is an avant-roots satire of white trash culture that leads off with a sort-of Billy Ray Cyrus cover called "Achey Rakey Heart" (played in part on an electric rake, of course) and goes on to tackle subjects like underage drinking, trains and George Bush. Despite self-explanatory song titles like "Redneck Jazz" and "Killbillies," however, the record's tone is more affectionate than spiteful; Chadbourne's nasal twang and Johns' whiskey-and-cigarettes growl complement one another nicely, and both gentlemen seem to be having a ball. - Review by Jason Ankeny, All Music Guide

"The Billy Childish Native American Sampler: A History 1983-93" 1993

From the haunting intro to the rockin' "Reindeer Are Wild" or the surf rock intrumentals like "Lakota Women" - This album has got it all!Something of a sequel to the excellent two-disc I Am the Billy Childish compilation, Billy Childish Native American Sampler: A History 1983-1993 also does an overview of Childish's career, but with a specific point -- all songs contributed are about Native American figures or issues. Childish himself makes reference to Link Wray in his liner notes -- Wray himself being of Native American descent -- and what in lesser hands might be patronizing glop becomes a fierce, growling celebration. Wray himself unsurprisingly gets a cover version on the compilation -- "Comanche," as recorded by Thee Headcoats in 1992 -- but the rest are Childish originals or collaborations, aside from the Blackhands' sharp reworking of "Louie Louie" as "Louis Riel," named after a Native Canadian leader of the 19th century. Split more or less halfway between vocal and instrumental numbers, it functions just fine as a dip into Childish's obsessive muse, but the particular focus lyrically and musically makes for a cohesive, fun-as-hell time. Many of the tracks are heavy on the tribal drums, and while a fair amount of his inspirations may seem like Western appropriations / bastardizations of said sound, it beats the heck out of Paul Revere & the Raiders' "Indian Reservation" any day of the week. There's plenty of dank, twanging nods to the kind of spaghetti western numbers Ennio Morricone made his trademark -- "Thunderbird" really should be the backdrop for one last Clint Eastwood western, if he ever does one again. Kira from Thee Headcoatees turns up for a cool and sly vocal on "Pocahontas Was Her Name," while the pointed humor award goes to Thee Mighty Caesars' "Cowboys Are Square." Childish also recites some poems specifically for the collection -- while brief, the cutting "Playing Pool with a Salish Indian Drug Dealer in the Dodson Bar Down-Town Vancouver" is one of the most direct and unforced contemplations of the effects of history one will hear. ~ Ned Raggett, All Music Guide

Tav Falco's Panther Burns "Red Devil" 10'LP 1987

For folks who prize unspoiled simplicity in rock'n'roll (and especially in rockabilly), Tav Falco's Panther Burns may be the ultimate band. On the early records, his voice drenched in echo, Falco goes through a familiar repertoire of Presley-derived whoops, mutters and coos, while an amateurish backing ensemble that often includes Alex Chilton grinds away laboriously like high-school rockers struggling through their first rehearsal. The 10-inch Red Devil signals a measured return to the uncontrolled wildness of early Panther Burns' records. Falco lays some truly soulful hollerin' over noisy electric guitars and a thumping backbeat on tracks produced individually (not to mention artlessly) by Chilton, Dickinson and others. Red Devil — ten songs and an abundance of hellacious energy — features esoterica by Chuck Berry, Lee Hazelwood and others, adding the songwriting talents of Dickinson and even Tav himself to the party. (The French CD also contains Sugar Ditch Revisited - EP.) - by Jon Young / Terry Rompers / Art Blackplayed by:

Alex Chilton "Stuff" 1987

Revered as a god by countless bands whose guitars go jingle jangle, Alex Chilton is the daddy of the wave of Beatles-inspired pop rock that swamped American radio from the mid-1980s into the '90s. - Mike McGuirkStuff is the closest thing to a coherent introduction, which isn't to say it's terribly coherent. 19 Years is easier to find than Stuff but not as good; the 1985 summary Document is premature; the early solo recordings released as 1970 are even more chaotic than Bach's Bottom.
Stuff is an amazing French CD-only collection that contains all of Feudalist Tarts, the three songs on the 1986 "No Sex" 12-inch and seven more solo items, including "Bangkok" and its original B-side. With the benefit of clear annotation and the inclusion of a Troggs cover recorded for a New Rose compilation, 19 Years, Chilton's first proper American retrospective, is basically culled from 3rd, High Priest, Feudalist Tarts and Like Flies on Sherbert, with some of the same esoterica collected on Stuff. The cassette contains fourteen tracks; the CD goes five better.

Tav Falco's Panther Burns "Behind The Magnolia Curtain + Blow Your Top" 1981

"The Unapproachable PANTHER BURNS = swamp skulk-fugue, Southern gothic, backwoods ballroom orchestrated by rogue male & genre necrophilliac, TAV FALCO who was the first to treat Fellini to a Mississippi mud pak."Behind the Magnolia Curtain, the group's first album, was recorded in 1981 and released on the British Rough Trade Records label in 1982. The album featured on some tracks, including "Bourgeois Blues", an appearance by a small, marching drum corps that included blues artist Jessie Mae Hemphill, who had participated in her grandfather's Northern Mississippi fife-and-drums groups as a child. The contrast between the strong, military beats of the drum corps dueling with Falco's occasionally out-of-sync vocals resulted in the wild, blues-rock chaos of songs on the album like the frenetic "Bourgeois Blues".
"We were thrown off quite a few stages during that period", wrote Johnson. "Though we initially enjoyed the effect we had on club audiences, somewhere along the way we tried to clean up our sound". The recording was followed by the slicker rockabilly revival style of Blow Your Top, without Chilton's participation, and in 1984, the Jim Dickinson-produced Sugar Ditch Revisited album was recorded, featuring a more subdued playing style by Chilton along with New Orleans bassist René Coman. That year, following a brief tour opening for The Clash before irritable college audiences impatient for the main act, Chilton stopped touring regularly with the group to resume his increasingly minimalist solo touring and recording career. Chilton's restrained, evolving solo style was beginning to diverge from his previously fiery, strident Panther Burns guitar style that had often featured reverb and feedback; however, he continued to produce several of their later albums. from wikipediamusicans on "Behind The Magnolia Curtain":

LUIS AND THE WILDFIRES "BRAIN JAIL" 2007

“One of the wildest records of the year!”Luis and his gang go for broke on their savage debut album! Recorded in LA's legendary Wild Records garage studio and issued to worldwide acclaim on the red hot WILD label on CD, the album makes its vinyl debut on Norton with two exclusive bonus cuts! Includes the dance floor monster hit Let's Party. The Wildfires blend together such influences as Johnny Carroll and Slim Harpo with a garage whomp and a solid nod to their Mexican musical heritage with a cover of Tony Casanova's Yeah Yeah Come Another Day. The Wildfires continue to tear it up on stages at major rock n' roll festivals from Spain to Japan. After witnessing their insane show, astute talent scout Todd Abramson was led to remark, “I've just seen the new Los Locos Del Ritmo!” The band was recently nominated for an AVN award for Best Porn Soundtrack to Vivid Video's THE REBELLE ROUSERS.traxfromwax:

BLOOD ON THE SADDLE "Fresh Blood" 1987

HORSES GOING CRAZY!!!With one acoustic rest period, the band's blood runs hotter on the third album, an uneven race with the devil that uses flat-out tempos on hard-rocking originals related to country music more by structural inspiration than content. (Indicative of the shifting personality, covers of "Rawhide" and "Folsom Prison Blues" are crazed but bland, hand-me-downs that no longer fit.) As a singer, Davis thrives in this exciting environment, but Zilinskas' efforts to keep pace with the charging rhythms and skillet-licking solos strip the twangy character from her voice. trouserpress

James Luther Dickinson "Dixie Fried" 1972

1972 album from the best-known unknown musician Memphis has ever produced. As a bandleader, session musician and producer, his legacy stretches back to the early '60s, when he started out in garage rock bands like Flash and the Memphis Casuals. He played the piano on The Rolling Stones' 'Wild Horses' and can be seen in the studio with the Stones in the film Gimme Shelter.Veteran producer Jim Dickinson had been well-established as a trusted producer and sideman by the time he recorded an album of his own in 1972. Atlantic honcho Jerry Wexler had signed Dickinson and the Dixie Flyers, the label's house band for nearly all its soul recordings at the time, to record an album. Only Dickinson really felt up to it, and Dixie Fried was the result. Mixing blues, country, and unapologetic Southern boogie on nine tunes, Dickinson sounded something like a not-yet-formed Leon Russell or Dr. John (the latter of whom played on the album extensively). His wild, eclectic choice of songs makes for a mixed bag in the end. The sheer barrelhouse abandon of "Wine" is surpassed only by the New Orleans-style RB of the title track, or the carnival-barker anthem "O How She Dances," a strange and fascinating precursor to Tom Waits' signature style. On Bob Dylan's "John Brown" Dickinson loses his way a bit, and his voice (at once hesitant and overzealous) trips him up in a number of places throughout. A gem to be sure, but one of a very rough cut indeed, and of course this factor may hold special appeal to some listeners. But understandably, Dickinsonstuck to producing for a while after this one. [Sepia Tone's 2002 release is the first time this album has ever been issued on compact disc.] - John Duffy, All Music Guide
