Manila
Manila (
i/məˈnɪl.ə/) is the capital city of the Philippines. It is the home to extensive commerce and seats the executive and judicial branches of the Filipino government. It also contains vast amount of significant architectural and cultural landmarks in the country. Manila is one of the sixteen cities that makes up Metro Manila, the National Capital Region of the Philippines. In 2012, Globalization and World Cities Research Network listed Manila as a global city.
Manila is on the eastern shore of Manila Bay. According to the 2010 census, Manila is the second most populous city in the Philippines with a population of 1,652,171. Manila is the most densely populated city in the world with 42,857 people per square kilometer.
Manila has six representative districts for the lower house of the Philippine Congress. Furthermore, the city is composed of 16 districts, namely: Binondo, Ermita, Intramuros, Malate, Paco, Pandacan, Port Area, Quiapo, Sampaloc, San Andres, San Miguel, San Nicolas, Santa Ana, Santa Cruz, Santa Mesa and Tondo.

Duterte has expressed his desire to build on the stellar accomplishments of the administration of outgoing president Benigno Aquino III, particularly the latter’s good governance initiatives and critical structural reforms that transformed the Philippines from being “the sick man of Asia” into “Asia’s rising tiger.” Of his ten-point socioeconomic agenda revealed on Monday, June 20, for example, his first point was to continue and maintain current macroeconomic policies, including fiscal, monetary and trade policies.
However, he intends to depart from Aquino’s legacy of instituting slow but steady macroeconomic reform by advancing an economic agenda which seeks to upgrade, accelerate as well as expand the government’s basic services that shall render the country’s macroeconomic environment more conducive for the flourishing of businesses, influx of investments and conduct of seamless trade within the country and the greater ASEAN region. Some megaprojects worth anticipating include: (a) three major railway systems, namely the Mindanao railway, Manila-Bicol railway, and Manila-Batangas railway; (b) Zamboanga Ecozone, Southern Mindanao Growth Corridor (General Santos growth corridor and Davao Gulf Industrial corridor); and the South Mindanao-North Sulawesi ro-ro link, among others.
Duterte intends to overcome the alleged structural dissonance between macroeconomic reform which has been the hallmark of Aquino’s “Daang Matuwid” program and concrete improvement of living conditions and standards of Juan dela Cruz. Welcome onboard Asiana's brand new A350 to Manila. It is always awesome to fly on an inaugural flight, and the crew on this flight were absolutely lovely. The service was full of smiles, kind, and attentive. Drinks were topped off multiple times on this short 3:30 hour flight. Asiana prepared a nice goodie bag for all passengers of this flight. It was a big sleep kit with a really thick and padded eye mask, a neck pillow, and pen and stationary all branded with Asiana A350. The introduction of the A350 is also the introduction of the new premium economy class, as well as the refreshed business class and economy class seats. Here's my part 2 of Turkish Airlines flight from Istanbul to Manila. I was given a hotel by Turkish Airlines which gave me the chance to explore Istanbul on a longer layover. The flight from Istanbul Ataturk Airport to Manila is around 10 hours and 45 minutes. It was my first time riding the Airbus A340. Seats were quite old as well as the IFE. However the service of the flight attendants were superb especially the meal service. Enjoy! The service was full of smiles, kind, and attentive. Drinks were topped off multiple times on this short 3:30 hour flight. Asiana prepared a nice goodie bag for all passengers of this flight. It was a big sleep kit with a really thick and padded eye mask, a neck pillow, and pen and stationary all branded with Asiana A350.
The introduction of the A350 is also the introduction of the new premium economy class, as well as the refreshed business class and economy class seats. For business class, the seats offer a lot more privacy and the IFE is bigger and brighter yet the viewing angle is narrow which prevents the glare from waking up other passengers in flight. The seats look absolutely sleek and class, and the redesign brings it in line with the design of the A380 first class suites. Overall the new seat is more passenger friendly since it is more private and the controls are more convenient. Although it isn't the reverse herringbone seats on CX and CI's A350, I would definitely not mind flying on longhual on this seat even in the true aisle seats.
The ceremony at the gate was interesting and I am glad I got to see the ribbon cutting for the introduction of the A350 into service. The ceremony was conducted only in Korean so if anyone can provide some English translation I would appreciate it!
Overall, the service was 5 stars as usual and the new seats are definitely an improvement.

The Singapore Airlines are immaculately groomed and display a high level of professionalism from boarding and throughout the flight. The entertainment options is diverse and it is great that there are Singaporean movies onboard. I enjoyed my meal of pan-fried fish with potatoes.

Verdict: I had a very pleasant flight with PAL. What I love flying PAL on domestic flight is the feeling of a world class service by the cabin crew, the feeling of flying on an international flight as well. Passengers are always served with a smile and very generous when serving drinks on this short sector.
One way fare on PAL's Premium Economy is around 5,000 pesos that includes 30 kilos of baggage, priority tagging of bags, access to Mabuhay Lounge, 100% mileage accrual and if you wish to refund, there's no fees for refund. On the ground, the check-in team were very efficient and fast when processing my boarding pass. Boarding was called in the lounge and as a premium economy passenger, you get priority boarding as well. So Kudos to PAL for improving the service of handling passengers.

Regarding the street people in Makati Manila, I bought many of them rice and stir fry dinners and bottled water. I interviewed a few of them off camera and they all confirmed they had come to that area for the holiday and tourist season to try beg for money from foreigners. They were there by choice, and went back to their provinces after new years.
Travel Tips:
Everyone spoke English and generally very friendly.
Its important to have photo ID for flights, hotels, and if police ask.
Its common for taxi drivers in Manila to try rip you off. Ask them nicely to put the meter on, or negotiate the price from the start if you know what it costs to your location. Otherwise find another taxi!
Shopping mall culture, locals love the mall for the aircon and to get out of the heat.
Locals often inflate prices for foreigners and tourists. Haggle and negotiate nicely. Be tough, but be respectful and polite about it. Shop around, you can often get a better price.

Aling Sosing's is often considered to be one of the best carinderias, or local Filipino food restaurants, in all of Manila. The crowd that shows up to eat lunch here everyday reinforces the fact that they are no doubt one of the spots you want to be in Manila, if you’re a food lovers. When I was eating in Manila, eating at Aling Sosing's was certainly among the best local Filipino food restaurants that I tried.
Aling Sosing's is a very typical type of local street food restaurant, sitting on the corner of a street, near to Makati. Just like most carinderias, all the food is prepared ahead of time, and sits at the front of the restaurant. When you arrive to order, you just simply pick and choose the different dishes that you want to order, find a table, and they will bring you the dishes to your table. Additionally, some of the famous dishes to eat at Aling Sosing's are off the grill, and you’ll smell the wonderful aroma of the grilling meats the entire time you’re eating, and it’s fantastic.
Ying and I arrived about 11 am on a weekday, and luckily we beat the main lunch traffic, but just barely. There were tables available when we arrived, but as soon as we sat down and order it filled up. Sof if you eat at Aling Sosing's Carinderia you might want to arrive before the main lunch rush. Additionally, some of the Filipino food dishes sell out fast, and they don’t cook them again for the day - once they are sold out, they are done for the day.
Here are the main Filipino dishes I ordered:
Pinakbet - A stew of mixed vegetables, oftentimes flavored with shrimp paste. This was the best versions of pinakbet I’ve ever had.
Inihaw na tilapia - The grilled tilapia is quite well known at this restaurant. It was simple and delicious.
Inihaw na liempo - The grilled pork belly is one of their signature dishes, and it’s every bit as good and smoky as it looks.
Kaldereta - A Filipino food I love so much is kaldereta, a goat stew, mainly because I love goat so much. It was oily, but really good.
Adobong pusit - I saw the squid the pot and decided to try it out. It was a little on the sweet side.
Pork BBQ - Fresh off the grill, Ying and I ordered some of their pork bbq. The pork was tender and lathered in bbq, it was amazing.
Total price - 640 PHP ($12.90)
If you’re looking for a local Filipino restaurant in Manila that I think serves some of the best Filipino food, Aling Sosing's is a restaurant you’re going to want to check out. The food is awesome, the setting and positive atmosphere is refreshing, and the constant smoke from the grill will keep your nose happy and wanting more!

The trip: Manila - Taal Vulcano - El Nido - Cebu - Bohol Music: Sons Of Maria - Where the Rivers Flow In Manila we stayed at the H2O hotel in a room with a big aquarium. A nice hotel with friendly staff. Manila city wasn't that great so we decided to spend a day climbing the Taal Volcano. A nice place to visit because of the island in a lake within an island in a lake situation. After a few days we took a flight to El Nido which is situated on one of the most beautiful islands in the world; Palawan. We booked a trip (which was slightly rough) to go visit the small islands and saw some beautiful fishes, beaches and limestone rocks. In Manila we stayed at the H2O hotel in a room with a big aquarium. A nice hotel with friendly staff. Manila city wasn't that great so we decided to spend a day climbing the Taal Volcano. A nice place to visit because of the island in a lake within an island in a lake situation.
After a few days we took a flight to El Nido which is situated on one of the most beautiful islands in the world; Palawan. We booked a trip (which was slightly rough) to go visit the small islands and saw some beautiful fishes, beaches and limestone rocks. We went on the zipline on Las Cabanas beach and shot a fun hyperlapse.
After El Nido we took a second flight to Cebu where we took a daytrip to swim with the whale sharks in Oslob.
Back in Cebu we took the boat to Bohol where we stayed in the ‘Nuts Huts’. We rented a scooter to discover the island; we went to the chocolate hills and visited the tarsier conservation area.
The weather in the Philippines in August was fine, a little bit stormy now and then. (storm season of course) Because of the weather we couldn't go diving unfortunately, we saw a lot of beautifull fish while snorkeling though.
I tried to do some cool transitions in the video, hope you like them.

If you're looking for paradise you can't miss this place: El Nido at the northern end of Palawan was definitely the most picturesque place I have visited in the Philippines! Beaches, lagoons and an underwater life that will amaze you. The archipelago of El Nido is absolutely stunning! If they ever get 24/7 electricity and a decent internet connection in Palawan, I'm so gonna move there and never come back. How to get there: There are daily flights from Manila, Cebu or Iloilo to Puerto Princesa. From Puerto Princesa Airport you can catch a minibus to El Nido (5-6 hours). Hi, I absolutely agree. I traveled a lot in the past 5 years and saw many beatiful places. But my absolute favorite is El Nido.
I learned diving there with 'Submariner' diving center. I can highly recommend Ronny and his diving center and I am looking forward traveling there again in the future.
We did stay directly in the main village, but 10 minutes from the cemetery. For the island hopping we rented a private boat from an old man living close to our place. The price was comparable to the official tours, but we started earlier and did not see that many people on the island, so I can recommend that.
We got there by van and left El Nido with the boat for Coron where we stayed another few days. From there you can fly to Manila.

Hi, yes its beautiful, but remember to check the weather! I have been in the phillipines now for two weeks, and the first five days was a storm, almost like a tyfoon, meaning nothing looked like those perfect pictures you see all the time.... Sure the weather got better, but still i had a lot of rain, both north and south and some islands. I wish i had checked the weather, because once you are stuck on an island in a cheap accomodation its not much fun, cold water, cold rain, nowhere to dry your clothes, nothing to do ( no diving) etc. Also i meet a lot of people who where only here one or two weeks who also had no clue about the weather. Meaning their holiday was one big dissapointment. So yes you can have good weather dec-febr, but if you want to be sure, better come in march to may.

I have just one comment on your 2014 update on getting to El Nido—there are still flights going to El Nido. These are operated solely by Island Transvoyager (ITI) now though, and if you're not booking your stay at any of the El Nido Resorts (Pangulasian, Lagen, Miniloc, and Apulit Islands), it will be very difficult for you to book a flight with the airline. I think the reason for this is that the resorts and the airline have the same owners, or at least they have some sort of partnership. I'm not saying it is impossible, just that ITI is prioritizing customers who are also booked at one of the El Nido Resorts. I just booked our (my husband and myself) stay at Miniloc Island online (www.elnidoresorts.com), and there you have the option to book your flight Manila-El Nido through them as well but not the option to book just the flight...
Btw, it's not our first time to travel to El Nido either. We traveled there back in 2008, but stayed at one of those backpacker resorts in El Nido town. At the time there were still other flights going to El Nido, albeit only ITI offers a direct flight (all the others were via Puerto Princesa). Not wanting to go through the hassle of 2-legged flights, I tried booking at ITI. I had to call them over the phone only to be told the best they could offer was to put us on a waiting list as their priority is on customers already booked at the El Nido Resorts... In short, we ended up taking the two-legged flight via Puerto Princesa anyway (which wasn't a waste as we were also able to visit some of the worthy sites there as well, e.g. Crocodile and Butterfly farms).
Well, I hope this post helps anyone out there who may want to visit El Nido 😉

Condé Nast Traveler ranked Palawan as #1 of the Top Islands in the World. The Huffington Post stated last month that Palawan is the most beautiful Island in the World. What else can I say?
If you're looking for paradise you can't miss this place: El Nido at the northern end of Palawan was definitely the most picturesque place I have visited in the Philippines! Beaches, lagoons and an underwater life that will amaze you. The archipelago of El Nido is absolutely stunning! If they ever get 24/7 electricity and a decent internet connection in Palawan, I'm so gonna move there and never come back. How to get there: There are daily flights from Manila, Cebu or Iloilo to Puerto Princesa. From Puerto Princesa Airport you can catch a minibus to El Nido (5-6 hours). Not knowing very much about the Philippines before I visited, I was pleasantly surprised by Manila and Subic and how they both reminded me of America. The highlight of the trip was getting a chance to visit a Vietnamese boat people refugee camp near Baataan. I met some friendly Pinoys too. The food was great. The transportation readily available. And the landscape extremely beautiful.
