Saksi

Saksi (lit. Eyewitness) is the late-night newscast of GMA Network in the Philippines. The newscast first aired as the early evening (primetime) and flagship newscast of the network from October 2, 1995 to July 12, 2002. The newscast is anchored by Arnold Clavio and Pia Arcangel. It airs every Mondays to Thursdays, 23:30-24:00 (PST) and Fridays, 23:20-23:50 (PST). It is also aired internationally through GMA Pinoy TV and is heard on a slightly delayed basis through Super Radyo DZBB 594 AM.

History

Enriquez-Davila as Saksi: GMA Headline Balita

On October 2, 1995, GMA Network launched the newscast, originally entitled Saksi: GMA Headline Balita, as a 15-minute early evening weekday newscast. It was then anchored by Mike Enriquez (then known as "Mr. Saksi") and Karen Davila. Saksi became popular in such a short time, that people were using the word as a catchphrase, complete with the pointed forefinger like the program’s news anchors. In the early years of the newscast, the anchors, especially Enriquez, popularized the word "pasok" (come in) in introducing reporters (who included Jessica Soho, Arnold Clavio, Mao dela Cruz and Susan Enriquez, among others). The format is patterned after AM radio newscasts wherein its fast paced and compressed to a short program. This style of introducing reporters was also previously used in GMA's other regional news programs patterned after "Saksi" like Balitang Bisdak (GMA Cebu), Testigo (GMA Davao) and Ratsada (GMA Iloilo).

GMA News and Public Affairs

GMA News and Public Affairs (commonly GMA News; formerly RBS News Department, GMA Radio-Television News and GMA Rainbow Satellite News) is the news and public affairs programming division of the media conglomerate, GMA Network Inc.

It produces news, public affairs, infotainment, and lately, entertainment programs for all GMA Network and GMA News TV owned and affiliated television and radio stations in the Philippines, and internationally through GMA Pinoy TV, GMA Life TV and GMA News TV International. GMA News and Public Affairs is currently headed by Marissa Flores. It is headquartered at the Ground Floor of GMA Network Center in Quezon City.

History

News division

The GMA News division traces its origin from the Republic Broadcasting System, established by Robert Stewart in 1959. Programming of its radio station, DZBB depended on mostly news reports. The station covered the eruption of Mt. Hibok-Hibok in 1951 and the election and death of the Former President Ramon Magsaysay. While RBS Channel 7 was established in 1961, it was in the 1970s that GMA became one of the most-watched television news source in the country. In 1983, Channel 7 was the first to break the news of Ninoy Aquino's death and later would be the only television station to broadcast his funeral. The channel also became the first station to broadcast the Ramos-Enrile break-away that led to the People Power Revolution (otherwise known as EDSA Revolution).

Arnold Clavio

Arnold Clavio (born November 2, 1965 in Tondo, Manila), also called Igan, is a radio and television newscaster, journalist, and television host in the Philippines. He currently co-anchors GMA Network's late-night newscast, Saksi, with Pia Arcangel (formerly with Vicky Morales), and hosts a morning radio show called Dobol A sa Dobol B on DZBB with Ali Sotto. He also writes a column entitled Hirit Na! for the tabloid newspaper Abante.

Biography

Whilst in school, Clavio was a member of his school newspaper's editorial staff. In college, he studied journalism at the UST Faculty of Arts and Letters (UST-AB).

After graduating, Clavio worked as a news writer at DWIZ. After a year, he became a field reporter for GMA Network's flagship radio station, DZBB.

Clavio made his first appearance as a television news reporter in 1994, when GMA offered him a reporter's slot in Brigada Siete, co-hosting with the late Louie Beltran and Jessica Soho. The next year, the Philippine Department of Health awarded Clavio top prize in their Philippine AIDS-STD Media Awards for his report on Sarah Jane Salazar. Later that year, the Asian Broadcasting Union named Clavio's coverage of Abu Sayyaf the "Best Reportage of a Crisis."

GMA Network

GMA Network (Global Media Arts or simply GMA) is a major commercial television and radio network in the Philippines. GMA Network is owned by GMA Network Inc. a publicly listed company. Its first broadcast on television was on October 29, 1961, GMA Network (formerly known as DZBB TV Channel 7, RBS TV Channel 7, GMA Radio-Television Arts then GMA Rainbow Satellite Network) is commonly signified to as the "Kapuso Network" in reference to the outline of the company’s logo. It has also been called the “Christian Network” which refers to the apparent programming during the tenure of the new management, which took over in 1974. It is headquartered in the GMA Network Center in Quezon City and its transmitter is located at Tandang Sora Avenue, Barangay Culiat also in Quezon City.

The original meaning of the GMA acronym was Greater Manila Area, referring to the initial coverage area of the station. As the network expanded it changed into Global Media Arts. At present the corporate name is simply GMA Network Inc.
