SM Mall of Asia is a shopping mall in Bay City, Pasay, Philippines, near the SM Central Business Park, the Manila Bay, and the southern end of Epifanio de los Santos Avenue (EDSA).

Owned and developed by SM Prime Holdings, the largest mall chain owner and developer in the Philippines, it has a land area of 42 hectares, a gross floor area of approximately 406,962 square metres (4.38050×10^⁶ sq ft), and attracts a daily average foot traffic of about 200,000 people.

It is currently the 4th largest shopping mall in the Philippines and the 11th in the world. When it opened in 2006 it was the largest shopping mall in the Philippines until SM City North EDSA was redeveloped in 2008, and was relegated to third place by the expansion of SM Megamall from 2011 until November 27, 2015 when SM Seaside City Cebu opened to the public.

Construction

The mall is the centerpiece project of SM Prime at the SM Central Business Park, where five one-story buildings serve as the company's corporate offices (the sixth building being occupied by TeleTech Holdings, Inc. as their flagship site in the country).

SM Supermalls

SM Supermalls, owned by SM Prime Holdings, is a chain of shopping malls in the Philippines, comprising around 55 malls located across the country.

History

The company that operates the malls was started by Henry Sy, Sr. in 1958 as Shoemart, with a store in Manila. In the 1960s Shoemart expanded its shoe store chain. By the 1970s, Shoemart was a full-line department store, shifting its name from Shoemart to SM.

In the 1980s, the company diversified and ventured into the supermarket and home appliance store business. It opened the first "Supermall" store in 1985 in Quezon City called SM City North EDSA.

Pasay

Pasay is one of the cities in Metro Manila, the National Capital Region of the Philippines. It is bordered to the north by the City of Manila, Makati to the northeast, Taguig to the east, and Parañaque to the south. Due to its location just south of the City of Manila, Pasay quickly became an urban town during the American Colonial Period.

Kingdom of Namayan

The Kingdom of Namayan was a confederation of barangays which reached its zenith c. 1175. From its royal capital in Sapa (today in Santa Ana, Manila), the state had territory stretching from Manila Bay to Laguna de Bay. Dayang-dayang Pasay is noted as having inherited the lands now comprising the territories of Culi-culi, Pasay, and Baclaran, marking the area as subordinate to the sovereign of Namayan.

Spanish Era

The Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan arrived in what is now the Philippines on March 16, 1521. On May 19, 1571, Miguel López de Legaspi took formal possession of the Kingdom of Maynila and its surrounding polities in the name of the Spanish Crown. For 250 years, the Islands were governed by the Viceroy of Mexico, but in practise Catholic clergymen governed local politics.

The Philippines (ⁱ/ˈfɪlᵻpiːnz/; Filipino: Pilipinas [ˌpɪlɪˈpinɐs]), officially known as the Republic of the Philippines (Filipino: Republika ng Pilipinas), is a sovereign island country in Southeast Asia situated in the western Pacific Ocean. Its location on the Pacific Ring of Fire and close to the equator makes the Philippines prone to earthquakes and typhoons, but also endows it with abundant natural resources and some of the world's greatest biodiversity.
