Military Chief

 

the chief of the local province or district body of the military administration in prerevolutionary Russia. The district military chief was in charge of accepting new recruits and assigning and dispatching them to the forces. He also registered reservists and summoned them to training meetings and inspections. He was subordinated to the province military chief. In 1881 the post of province military chief was abolished. The district military chiefs retained their rights and duties but were subordinated to the commander of the local brigade deployed at the territory to which the district belonged.
