TOTW: the Alt-Right

Over the past few years and especially proceeding Trump's election, there has been a lot of debate about the growth of right-wing authoritarianism. One of the items on the table is the use of terminology to describe relatively new forms of ideology and practice throughout Europe and the United States. In the USA, pundits are taking positions on the label "alt-right;" whether a variety of different sorts of authoritarians ought to be recognized in their particularities, or rather exposed as (or lumped into) an undifferentiated camp that we simply call "fascists" or "white nationalists".

Some Quick Thoughts on Anarchist Theory After the Decline of Symbolic Efficiency

From Ding Politik by Duane Rousselle

It has become a common argument among a certain school of political theorists to claim that there has been a decline in symbolic efficiency within recent political and social history. These scholars go on to argue that this period of decline is marked historically and it presents itself as a movement inward toward the political ontology of drive and away from the political logic of desire. Moreover, it represents the disappearance of the subject-supposed-to-know, that is, the subject who, because of his place within the structure of ruling, knows the answer or the deep secrets of our lives as political agents. However, what has been less highlighted by these scholars is the role that Lacan’s later work played in the formation of this theory. For example, these scholars seldom acknowledge that Lacan’s later work – which provided the foundation for this theory of the decline of symbolic efficiency – also offered a solution.

We take responsibility for the participation in the conflicts of November 17th, 2016 in Athens at the Polytechnic. We are delighted for their scope, and for the 6 cops in the hospital. We are pleased that we were actively part of an anarchist insurrectionary act which showed a sufficient force for the measures and the possibilities it offers.

Critique and Renewal: The Institute for Anarchist Studies at Twenty, by Chuck Morse

I played a pivotal role in the early history of the Institute for Anarchist Studies (IAS). I conceived of it, drafted all the founding documents, selected the initial Board of Directors, led early fundraising campaigns, and anchored it as a whole. Although I have had little to do with the IAS since leaving it in 2005, my years with the organization were an important—and positive—experience for me. I appreciate that Perspectives editors asked me to share my reflections on the occasion of the group’s twentieth anniversary.
