Wide shot, checkpoint STORYLINE: Some Fallujah residents on Wednesday joined masked militiamen in a ritual burning of the new Iraqi flag as they denounced members of Iraq's Governing Council as traitors. A masked militiaman said the "Mujahedeen of Fallujah" rejected the flag designated by the "infidel Governing Council". Another held up a poster carrying photographs of US Secretary of Defence Donald Rumsfeld, commander of the US troops in Iraq, General Ricardo Sanchez, and coalition forces spokesman Brigadier General Mark Kimmitt. The poster, which is reportedly being circulated in Fallujah, offers a 15 (m) million US dollar reward to whoever brings the head of any of the three men to any office of the Iraqi resistance. Meanwhile, on the outskirts of the turbulent city on Wednesday, families waited at a marine checkpoint to be allowed to return to their homes. Many had fled Fallujah earlier this month following clashes between US marines and insurgents. One man complained about the pounding his hometown had received at the hands of the US, and denounced the Iraqi Governing Council as traitors. A spokesman for the Iraqi Governing Council, Hameed al-Kafaie, said the council had called for a peaceful resolution in Fallujah, but security was in the hands of the US and it was up to them. He added that the council had called on the US not to resort to military means because civilians would be caught in the crossfire and that would be unacceptable. US aircraft dropped leaflets over Fallujah, calling on insurgents to surrender.
