Tuvalu (i/tuːˈvɑːluː/ too-VAH-loo or /ˈtuːvəluː/ TOO-və-loo), formerly known as the Ellice Islands, is a Polynesian island nation located in the Pacific Ocean, midway between Hawaii and Australia. It comprises three reef islands and six true atolls spread out between the latitude of 5° to 10° south and longitude of 176° to 180°, west of the International Date Line. Its nearest neighbours are Kiribati, Nauru, Samoa and Fiji. Tuvalu has a population of 10,837 (2012 census). The total land area of the islands of Tuvalu is 26 square kilometres (10 sq mi).
The first inhabitants of Tuvalu were Polynesians. The pattern of settlement that is believed to have occurred is that the Polynesians spread out from Samoa and Tonga into the Tuvaluan atolls, with Tuvalu providing a stepping stone to migration into the Polynesian Outlier communities in Melanesia and Micronesia.
In 1568, Spanish navigator Álvaro de Mendaña was the first European to sail through the archipelago, sighting the island of Nui during his expedition in search of Terra Australis. In 1819 the island of Funafuti was named Ellice's Island; the name Ellice was applied to all nine islands after the work of English hydrographer Alexander George Findlay. The islands came under Britain's sphere of influence in the late 19th century, when each of the Ellice Islands was declared a British Protectorate by Captain Gibson of HMS Curacoa between 9 and 16 October 1892. The Ellice Islands were administered as British protectorate by a Resident Commissioner from 1892 to 1916 as part of the British Western Pacific Territories (BWPT), and then as part of the Gilbert and Ellice Islands colony from 1916 to 1974.

March 2001 What's in a name? To a tiny nation in the South Pacific, plenty. The country is Tuvalu in the South Pacific: nine low-lying islands 1,000 km north of Fiji that make up one of the world's smallest, most isolated and most densely populated countries.
The drought-stricken South Pacific nation of Tuvalu is facing a water crisis that is likely to continue until at least January.
Tuvalu is one of the smallest and most remote countries on earth. Located in the Pacific Ocean, it can barely be seen on most maps. The country is in danger of disappearing beneath the waves. Not an Atlantis myth but the reality of this century. Plans for evacuation are being made right now. Tuvalu is destined to become one of earth's first nations to be washed away due to the effect of global warming, making the Tuvaluans the first complete nation of climate refugees, banned from their home-islands, their culture and identity taken away. Beyond the appearance of an easygoing life, the threat to Tuvalu's future is an obvious danger that everyone has been forced to recognize. The highest point of Tuvalu is only four and a half meters above sea level. The average elevation is not even two...

Crossing the Tide, the Tuvalu Pavilion for the 56th Venice Biennale reflects on the plea of small island nations facing the effects of global climate change. This is manifested by rising sea levels and increasing severe storms causing floods, and ultimately threatens the future of these small island nations such as Tuvalu, located in the Pacific Ocean. The Tuvalu Pavilion features a flooded pavilion. It connects the flooding of the Tuvalu to the flooding of Venice. Crossing the tide in the Tuvalu Pavilion over slightly submerged footbridges, visitors find themselves in an imaginary space — a dreamscape, consisting only of sky and water. The Tuvalu Pavilion represents a natural environment, but one that is essentially manmade and is the work of the Taiwanese artist Vincent J.F. Huang. ...

Kiribati, the sinking Pacific island paradise VIDEO SOUTH TARAWA, Kiribati (Reuters) - The ocean laps against a protective seawall outside the maternity ward at Kiribati's Nawerewere Hospital, marshalling itself for another assault with the next king tide. Inside, a basic clinic is crowded with young mothers and newborn babies, the latest additions to a population boom that has risen as relentlessly as the sea in a deeply Christian outpost where family planning is still viewed with skepticism. It is a boom that threatens to overwhelm the tiny atoll of South Tarawa as quickly as the rising seas. Some 50,000 people, about half of Kiribati's total population, are already crammed onto a sand and coral strip measuring 16 sq km (6 sq miles). "Cli...

As a diplomatic ally of Taiwan, the southern African country of Swaziland once attracted considerable investment from Taiwanese businesses, especially those in the textile industry. At one point, after the US gave goods from Swaziland preferential tariff treatment, it became a base for many Taiwan-owned manufacturers. But just last year, those same Taiwanese businesses were broadsided by the US announcement that it would cancel preferential duties on Swazi imports. Many shut their doors and withdrew their investments, but some stayed on and managed to adapt to the new circumstances. On this Friday afternoon, a small market suddenly forms on a road near one of Swaziland’s industrial parks. Sellers are expecting their customers to come from the large factory just across the street because ...

Available on DVD from: http://www.videoproject.com Climate Refugees is the first feature film to explore in-depth the global human impact of climate change and its serious destabilizing effect on international politics. The film turns the distant concept of global warming into a concrete human problem with enormous worldwide consequences. Experts predict that by mid-century hundreds of millions of people will be uprooted as a result of sea level rise and an increase in extreme weather events, droughts and desertification. Little is being done to plan for the potential mass migration of millions of refugees who will be forced to cross national borders. According to the UN, there are already more environmental refugees in the world than political or religious refugees. The Pentagon now...
Aid agencies are stepping up efforts to reach remote communities hit by Cyclone Pam which tore through the Pacific archipelago of Vanuatu. At least eight people are reported to have died and it is feared the toll could rise as news comes in from outlying islands. Thousands of people spent a second night in shelters after their homes were damaged or destroyed. Oxfam Australia said entire communities had been "blown away". The category five storm, with winds of up to 270km/h (170mph), veered off its expected course and struck populated areas on Friday night. Vanuatu's population of 267,000 is spread over 65 islands with about 47,000 people living in the capital, Port Vila. In a statement on Sunday, Oxfam Australia said up to 90% of housing in Port Vila had reportedly been seriously dam...

Do Climate Change 'Refugees' Exist? - Professor Jane McAdam, 29 July 2011, 1-2pm We have heard the predictions that some 250 million people may be displaced by climate change by 2050, and that small Pacific island nations such as Tuvalu and Kiribati may disappear altogether. Are these dire predictions likely to come true, and if so, are existing legal and policy frameworks adequately equipped to assist people seeking protection from climate change? Drawing on fieldwork undertaken in small Pacific islands and in Bangladesh and India, this lecture will examine the nature of climate-related movement; whether expanding the protection offered by international refugee law and human rights law is feasible; and what other solutions might be appropriate.
Low-lying coastal areas are often the most populated parts of islands, with villages, towns, agriculture, infrastructure and tourist development competing for space. Unfortunately, coasts are also particularly vulnerable to climate hazards and weather events. Particular vulnerabilities include loss of land and islands from sea level rise and loss of homes and lives from extreme weather events such as cyclones. The resulting impacts – coastal erosion, infrastructure damage, flooding and salt water intrusion – present a critical challenge to many Pacific island coastlines. Supported by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP), the Pacific Adaptation to Climate Change (PACC) programme is the first major clim...

The effects of rising sea levels due to global warming seem a long way off for most of us, but for the people of the small Pacific island nation of Tuvalu, the threat is more imminent. With water now up to some families' doorsteps during king tides and a higher water table interfering with food production, time is fast running out for the population of Tuvalu. How does that old song go? I forgot the words.
There was a boy who believed love is all you need.
He may have been right, it depends on what you mean.
What do you mean by love?
You told me no, said you love me though.
You had to go your own way.
If you change your mind, you know where to find me,
I'll be around.
Before the new dream can fly the old one has to die.
When we were boys we believed the dream was all we'd need.
Turned out to be wrong, now it's time to rise and shine
Singing a brand new song.
You told me no, said you love me though.
You had to go your own way.
If you change your mind, you know where to find me,
I'll be around.
I'll be around.
Woah.
How does that old song go? I forgot the words. Hey!
You told me no, said you love me though.
You had to go your own way.
If you change your mind, you know where to find me,
I'll be around.

You had to go your own way.
