Auf dem entbehrungsreichen Gewaltmarsch durch die Eiswüste der Antarktis hatten Amundsen und seine Mannschaft schier Übermenschliches geleistet: 1500 Kilometer Wegstrecke in 56 Tagen, bei orkanartigen Schneestürmen und eisigen Temperaturen.
Die tiefe Verzweiflung seines englischen Konkurrenten Falcon Scott, der 35 Tage nach Amundsen an den Pol kam, kann man nur erahnen. "Das Furchtbare ist eingetreten", notiert der Brite zutiefst deprimiert in sein Tagebuch, "die Norweger sind uns zuvorgekommen. Eine furchtbare Enttäuschung! Aber nichts tut mir dabei so weh, als der Anblick meiner armen, treuen Gefährten! All die Qual - wofür?" Scott und seine Männer sahen die Heimat nie wieder; sie starben auf dem Rückweg im ewigen Eis, nur 18 Kilometer vom nächsten Vorrats-Depot entfernt. Das minutiöse Tagebuch Scotts, das später bei dem Toten gefunden wurde, dokumentiert auf dramatische Weise Hoffnung, Verzweiflung und Scheitern der britischen Abenteurer. "Um Gottes Willen - sorgt für unsere Hinterbliebenen", lautete Scotts letzter Eintrag. Er wurde zum tragischen Helden. Amundsen dagegen kehrte unversehrt als strahlender Sieger nach Norwegen zurück.
Anhand der Aufzeichnungen von Scott und Amundsen rekonstruiert das 90-minütige Dokudrama den historischen Wettlauf zum Südpol. Aufwändig inszenierte Spielszenen, außergewöhnliche Computeranimationen vom menschlichen Körper, 3D-animierte Routenverläufe und atemberaubende Naturaufnahmen der Originalschauplätze zeigen den Kampf um Leben und Tod. Die 100 Jahre alten Filme und Fotos, die aufwändig koloriert wurden, geben Einblick in die Schönheit und Unberührtheit der Antarktis, aber auch in die Torturen und Strapazen, welche die beiden konkurrierenden Expeditionsteams auf ihrem Weg durchgemacht haben - bei minus 40 Grad Kälte und staubtrockener Luft, in der Höhenluft des Polarplateaus und bei Windgeschwindigkeiten von bis zu 200 Stundenkilometern. Experten wie Arved Fuchs und Reinhold Messner, die vor Jahren zusammen zum Südpol gelaufen sind, kommentieren neben Historikern und Familienangehörigen das historische Geschehen.
"Der Wettlauf zum Südpol" ist die dramatische Geschichte zweier Männer, die ihr Leben riskierten, um ans Ende der Welt zu gelangen - dorthin, wo noch kein Mensch zuvor war. Nach Amundsen und Scott ist es übrigens niemandem mehr gelungen, auf der historischen Route mit den Mitteln von damals an den Südpol zu gelangen. Eine Leistung, die nicht genug gewürdigt werden kann.

THE GJØA EXPEDITION (1903-1906)
Roald Amundsen’s expedition with the Gjøa was the first to navigate the Northwest Passage north of the Canadian mainland on one expedition and one ship. In 1903-06 Amundsen accomplished this with six companions. Two years were spent on the way in Gjoa Haven when the then-location of the North Magnetic Pole was established, proving that the Magnetic Pole moves over time.

Roald Engelbregt Gravning Amundsen (Norwegian pronunciation: [ˈɾuːɑl ˈɑmʉnsən]; 16 July 1872 – c. 18 June 1928) was a Norwegian explorer of polar regions. He led the Antarctic expedition (1910-12) to discover the South Pole in December 1911 and he was the first expedition leader to (undisputedly) reach the North Pole in 1926. He is also known as the first to traverse the Northwest Passage (1903-06). He disappeared in June 1928 while taking part in a rescue mission. Amundsen, along with Douglas Mawson, Robert Falcon Scott, and Ernest Shackleton, was a key expedition leader during the Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration.
Amundsen was born to a family of Norwegian shipowners and captains in Borge, between the towns Fredrikstad and Sarpsborg. His father was Jens Amundsen. He was the fourth son in the family. His mother chose to keep him out of the maritime industry of the family and pressured him to become a doctor, a promise that Amundsen kept until his mother died when he was aged 21, whereupon he quit university for a life at sea. Amundsen had hidden a lifelong desire inspired by Fridtjof Nansen's crossing of Greenland in 1888 and the doomed Franklin expedition. As a result, he decided on a life of intense exploration.[citation needed]

THE GJØA EXPEDITION (1903-1906) Roald Amundsen’s expedition with the Gjøa was the first to navigate the Northwest Passage north of the Canadian mainland on one expedition and one ship. In 1903-06 Amundsen accomplished this with six companions. Two years were spent on the way in Gjoa Haven when the then-location of the North Magnetic Pole was established, proving that the Magnetic Pole moves over time. -

Vor 100 Jahren, am 14. Dezember 1911, erreichte der Norweger Roald Amundsen als erster Mensch den Südpol. Auf dem entbehrungsreichen Gewaltmarsch durch die Eiswüste der Antarktis hatten Amundsen und seine Mannschaft schier Übermenschliches geleistet: 1500 Kilometer Wegstrecke in 56 Tagen, bei orkanartigen Schneestürmen und eisigen Temperaturen.
Die tiefe Verzweiflung seines englischen Konkurrenten Falcon Scott, der 35 Tage nach Amundsen an den Pol kam, kann man nur erahnen. "Das Furchtbare ist eingetreten", notiert der Brite zutiefst deprimiert in sein Tagebuch, "die Norweger sind uns zuvorgekommen. Eine furchtbare Enttäuschung! Aber nichts tut mir dabei so weh, als der Anblick meiner armen, treuen Gefährten! All die Qual - wofür?" Scott und seine Männer sahen die Heimat nie wieder; sie starben auf dem Rückweg im ewigen Eis, nur 18 Kilometer vom nächsten Vorrats-Depot entfernt. Das minutiöse Tagebuch Scotts, das später bei dem Toten gefunden wurde, dokumentiert auf dramatische Weise Hoffnung, Verzweiflung und Scheitern der britischen Abenteurer. "Um Gottes Willen - sorgt für unsere Hinterbliebenen", lautete Scotts letzter Eintrag. Er wurde zum tragischen Helden. Amundsen dagegen kehrte unversehrt als strahlender Sieger nach Norwegen zurück.
Anhand der Aufzeichnungen von Scott und Amundsen rekonstruiert das 90-minütige Dokudrama den historischen Wettlauf zum Südpol. Aufwändig inszenierte Spielszenen, außergewöhnliche Computeranimationen vom menschlichen Körper, 3D-animierte Routenverläufe und atemberaubende Naturaufnahmen der Originalschauplätze zeigen den Kampf um Leben und Tod. Die 100 Jahre alten Filme und Fotos, die aufwändig koloriert wurden, geben Einblick in die Schönheit und Unberührtheit der Antarktis, aber auch in die Torturen und Strapazen, welche die beiden konkurrierenden Expeditionsteams auf ihrem Weg durchgemacht haben - bei minus 40 Grad Kälte und staubtrockener Luft, in der Höhenluft des Polarplateaus und bei Windgeschwindigkeiten von bis zu 200 Stundenkilometern. On December 14th 1911 Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen broke one of the last frontiers for humans on earth by becoming the first person to reach the South Pole beating his British rival, Robert Falcon Scott.
In true Viking fashion, Amundsen was one tough cookie. His explorer adventures started in 1896 when he joined a Belgian Antarctic Expedition that eventually became trapped by pack ice and therefore, without meaning to, they became the first to spend a complete winter in Antarctic waters. So while the rest of the crew rapidly fell to depression, starvation, insanity and scurvy, Amundsen was fresh like a rose, so he spent his time recording everything and using the experience to learn more about polar conditions. The guy was a machine! Anyway, such an experience only increased his passion for polar exploration and his dream to be the first to conquer the North Pole, so he spent several years fundraising and organizing the expedition to take him there. However just as he was about to start in 1909, American explorers Frederick Cook and Robert Peary claimed to have reached the North Pole already… Ok… would that stop him? No way! He didn’t tell anybody but decided to change plans… if he could not be the first in the North Pole, there was still another pole left! Thing is there was this other British expedition that had been planning to reach the South Pole, so when people found out the secret change of plans, let’s just say they were not too happy. But thanks to his superhuman will and the help of dogs, which were used for transport and as healthy protein supplement for their diet, Amundsen reach the South Pole first, planted there the Norwegian flag and made history.

On Wednesday October 10th 2012, Royal Norwegian Navy marked history by firing an NSM (Kongsberg's Naval Strike Missile) anti-ship missile from a surface vessel for the first time. The vessel in question was HNoMS Glimt, Skjold class coastal corvette. Five days later, on October 16th 2012, another NSM missile was launched from HNoMS Roald Amundsen, Nansen class Frigate. Both firing tests were reported as successful.

He pioneered an entirely new route to the Pole and they returned. In Amundsen's own words: "Victory awaits him who has everything in order — luck, people call it. Defeat is certain for him who has neglected to take the necessary precautions in time; this is called bad luck." Short accounts by other members of the party are appended.
