Fridtjof Nansen (/ˈfrɪd.tjɒf ˈnænsən/ FRID-choff NAN-sən; 10 October 1861 – 13 May 1930) was a Norwegian explorer, scientist, diplomat, humanitarian and Nobel Peace Prize laureate. In his youth a champion skier and ice skater, he led the team that made the first crossing of the Greenland interior in 1888, cross-country skiing on the island, and won international fame after reaching a record northern latitude of 86°14′ during his North Pole expedition of 1893–96. Although he retired from exploration after his return to Norway, his techniques of polar travel and his innovations in equipment and clothing influenced a generation of subsequent Arctic and Antarctic expeditions.
Nansen studied zoology at the Royal Frederick University in Christiania (renamed Oslo in 1925), and later worked as a curator at the Bergen Museum where his research on the central nervous system of lower marine creatures earned him a doctorate and helped establish modern theories of neurology. After 1896 his main scientific interest switched to oceanography; in the course of his research he made many scientific cruises, mainly in the North Atlantic, and contributed to the development of modern oceanographic equipment. As one of his country's leading citizens, in 1905 Nansen spoke out for the ending of Norway's union with Sweden, and was instrumental in persuading Prince Carl of Denmark to accept the throne of the newly independent Norway. Between 1906 and 1908 he served as the Norwegian representative in London, where he helped negotiate the Integrity Treaty that guaranteed Norway's independent status.
Norwegian explorer, human rights advocate, and Nobel Peace Prize winner Fridtjof Nansen was an eyewitness to the atrocities committed against the Armenians during the Armenian Genocide. He helped repatriate thousands of Armenian refugees in Armenia, Lebanon, and Syria and wrote two books about the Armenians and the genocide. In 1893, Nansen took a special round-hulled ship Fram to the New Siberian Islands in the eastern Arctic Ocean, froze her into the pack ice, and waited for the Arctic drift to carry her towards the pole. Impatient with the slow pace and erratic nature of the drift, after 18 months Nansen and Johansen, left the ship with a team of dogs and sledges and made for the pole. They did not reach 90°N but they achieved a record north latitude of 86°13.6′N before a long and parlous retreat over ice and water, attacked by bear and walrus, to eventually reach the safety of Franz Josef Land, where they overwintered in 1895. In 1896, Nansen and Johansen were found and rescued by Jackson. (Of course, the ironies are in that where Nansen froze himself in the ice, we now break it to reach the pole; where he...
Born in Norway in 1861, Fridtjof Nansen was a scientist, polar explorer, diplomat, statesman and humanist, with a deep compassion for his fellow human beings. Nansen became a pioneer in the field of applied science with a keen interest in zoology, marine biology, oceanography, geology, anthropology and sociology. While still in his twenties, Nansen led the first crossing of Greenland on skis in 1888 in what was to be the first of many adventures of exploration. His quest for knowledge led him to the Arctic and the Antartic and in 1893 he set off on a three-year Arctic journey aboard the Fram. As the immensely strong vessel drifted through the ice, Nansen and a companion made a dash for the North Pole, coming closer than any other person had previously been. His intellectual ability was ...

A Few Highlights of Antz "Notorious" Nansen... this is just a teaser, as soon as I get more footage and the Rakman footage I will add that too.

Since 1975 the research vessel Dr Fridtjof Nansen has sailed the oceans assisting developing countries to understand and assess their fishery resources. In spite of its successes many people remain unfamiliar with its work and how it contributes to decisions on sustainable fisheries management. Aware of this, the EAF-Nansen project arranged for a communication team made up of a journalist and a photographer to join one of the research cruises off the North West African coast. Over two weeks they recorded the research taking place as well as the work of scientists, administrators, fishers and fish processors in this part of Africa for whom the survey results are of immense value. This is their story.
