This version of Rossini's 'William Tell Overture' is from Pete Lashley's 2010 album 'It All Comes Round'. The album is now available on ITUNES.
It was recorded at Stonegate Studios in Bentham, North Yorkshire by Sam Parkinson (www.samesevennotes.co.uk).
Four movements make up Rossini's 'William Tell Overture'. Pete Lashley plays them all on acoustic guitars,sometimes double-tracked and more occasionally triple tracked. It begins with the 'Prelude' - a slow passage originally written by Rossini for the cello. Pete detunes his guitar for the first few notes to try and capture the deeper mood created in the original composition. It's interesting to note that William Tell was a revolutionary against 14th Century Austrian oppression in states of the Swiss confederacy. This deep mood of the prelude, representing dawn over the forbidding mountains, could be seen to represent both a pastoral beauty and the oppressed atmosphere in which the Swiss were forced to live under Austrian dictatorship.
The second movement is the 'Storm'. Up to four layers of acoustic guitars are used in this section by Lashley, all of which are playing their own distinct roles to capture the drama. The gentle bird call heard as the storm abates is sublime. Lashley plucks high pitch notes to emulate Rossini's original flute.
The third movement, Ranz des Vaches (call to the dairy cows), originally featuring the English horn and flute, signifies daybreak. Pete softly picks the guitar to emulate the English horn melody and the higher fluttering flute parts that come in later on in the movement.
The fourth movement and the most well known is the 'Gallop' which Rossini heralded by trumpets and wrote for full orchestra. This segment is often used in popular media to denote galloping horses and became the lone ranger theme music. Lashley uses acoustic guitars again to pick out the melody and high paced rhythm. Pete brings in the cowbell and tambourine to sustain the momentum as the music gallops towards its rousing conclusion.
Perhaps the political connotations of the William Tell overture are hardly surprising given that Rossini was born in Pesaro on the Adriatic coast of Italy in 1792 at a time when revolution was breaking out in nearby France. This revolutionary feeling, a questioning of the old order across Europe, was to at least temporarily rock France and parts of Europe to its core. Rossini's father was sympathetic to the French Revolution and welcomed Napoleon Bonaparte's troops when they arrived in northern Italy. When Austria restored the old regime in 1796, Rossini's father was sent to prison and his mother took him to Bologna where she made a living as a leading singer at various theatres of the Romagna region.
During Rossini's Paris years between 1824 and 1829 he created Guillaume Tell (William Tell). The production in 1829 brought his career as a writer of opera to a close. By this time he had already composed thirty-eight operas. Rossini died in 1868.
The overture is one of the most famous and frequently recorded works in the classical repertoire although the opera itself is rarely heard uncut today as the original score runs for more than four hours!

There aren't enough (or any) heel opponents in WCW who can make for an interesting feud with Goldberg. The best option is Scott Steiner, but that should be saved for later. Going to it this summer is too fast. Here is a scenario with Goldberg that could build toward a big PPV match six or twelve months down the line & establish a second huge star to rival Goldberg in WCW for years to come.

Scott Steiner vs. Goldberg was one of those intense matches that you couldn't take your eyes off of. In part, it was because these two guys are so tough. In part, it was because both have hair-trigger tempers & might set each other off at any second. In part, it was because both are so fragile despite their toughness & could end up injured. In part, it was because you knew neither like doing jobs, so how would they end the match? Mostly, though, it was because it was a good match between two of WCW's more intriguing stars.

Scott Steiner beat Goldberg in a no-DQ match. This was just as frightening as I expected it to be going in. They pummeled each other with scariness. Steiner actually hit a Diamond Cutter at one point. Steiner came off the top, but Goldberg caught him & powerslammed him. Goldberg started holding his bad arm. Midajah came out with a lead pipe, but didn’t do much. Goldberg went headfirst into the steps & started bleeding hardway from the top of his head. Steiner gave him an overhead belly-to-belly & Goldberg landed right on his head. Steiner grabbed the lead pipe, but Goldberg speared him. Vince Russo then hit the ring & killed Goldberg with bat shot. Steiner set up a table & body slammed Goldberg through it. Steiner put on the Recliner, but Goldberg got to the ropes. Steiner took him up top. Goldberg tried to fight back. Steiner then dropped him right on his head again with an overhead belly-to-belly superplex. I thought for sure somebody was going to die at this point. Steiner put on the Recliner again, but Goldberg made the ropes. Goldberg went for the spear, but Russo cut him off. Goldberg grabbed him by the throat. Steiner snuck up behind him & nailed him in the belly & head with the lead pipe. He put on the Recliner for a third time. Goldberg was pretty much a bloody mass of depravity, so the referee stopped the match. One hell of a scary spectacle.

WCW supporters have hardly been spoilt for choice in the Match Of The Year stakes. So, it must have felt like Christmas had come early when Scott Steiner & Goldberg went to war here in an incredibly brutal Anything Goes tussle. 'Big Poppa Pump' & 'Da Man' threw each other around & laid in the blows with such ferocity few (if any) others could (or would) dare to replicate. Even a Vince Russo bat shot could not quell the searing intensity as Goldberg powered out of the Steiner Recliner on three occasions. Ultimately, 'Sir-Pump-A-Lot' hammered the 'G-Man' in the rib cage with a lead pipe, then hit the knockout blow, before applying the match winning Recliner. The sterling craftsmanship of Goldberg & Steiner - who could easily become WCW's answer to The Rock & Triple H - served as a frustrating reminder that without such a twerp of a booker, WCW would still have plenty going for it.

Pete has added a captivating vocal melody and beautifully fingerpicked guitar to accompany William Wordsworth's famous poem ''I Wandered Lonely As A Cloud'. The poem, also known as 'Daffodils', was written by Wordsworth in 1804. It was inspired by a walk William took with his sister Dorothy in the Gowbarrow Park area of Lake Ullswater a couple of years earlier. In Dorothy's journal entry there is reference to an encounter with the golden daffodils which William remembers affectionately “dancing in the breeze' in his famous poem. Clearly this encounter had a profound affect on Wordworth's feelings when viewing it retrospectively through his mind's eye.
The song 'I Wandered Lonely As A Cloud' features on the Pete Lashley album 'Magic Corner'. It was recorded by Sam Parkinson at Stonegate Studios, Bentham, UK.

John Felix Anthony Cena (/ˈsiːnə/; born April 23, 1977) is an American professional wrestler and actor. He is currently signed to WWE as a member of its Raw brand.
In WWE, Cena has won 19 championships in total, including 12 world titles (having won the WWE Championship a record 10 times and the World Heavyweight Championship twice). In addition, Cena has also won the WWE United States Championship three times, and is a four-time Tag Team Champion, having held the World Tag Team Championship twice (once each with Shawn Michaels and Batista), and the WWE Tag Team Championship twice (once each with David Otunga and The Miz). Cena also won the 2008 Royal Rumble match, and is a two-time Superstar of the Year Slammy Award winner (2009 and 2010). He also has the fourth highest number of combined days as WWE Champion behind Bob Backlund, Hulk Hogan and Bruno Sammartino.
Cena started his professional wrestling career in 2000, wrestling for Ultimate Pro Wrestling, where he held the UPW Heavyweight Championship. Rey Gutierrez Mysterio Jr. (born December 11, 1974) is a Mexican American professional wrestler in World Wrestling Entertainment currently wrestling on the RAW Brand. In WWE, Gutierrez was trained by his uncle Rey Misterio, Sr. and wrestled early on in Mexico where he learned the Lucha Libre high flying style that has been his trademark.
Gutierrez originally worked for Asistencia Asesoría y Administración (AAA) in Mexico, from 1992 to 1995. He wrestled in Extreme Championship Wrestling (ECW) from 1995 to 1996 and World Championship Wrestling (WCW) from 1996 to 2001, as Rey Misterio, Jr./Rey Mysterio, Jr. but dropped the "Junior" from his name when he began working for WWE in 2002.
Mysterio is known for having a high flying style, which helped kick-start the cruiserweight wrestling revolution in the United States in the late 1990s during his time in WCW. In WCW he won the WCW World Tag Team Championship three times, and the WCW Cruiserweight Tag Team Championship once with Billy Kidman as part of the Filthy Animals. In WWE, Mysterio is a three time world champion having held the World Heavyweight Championship twice, the WWE Championship once and is currently listed as the lightest world champion in WWE history. He has also held the WWE Tag Team Championship a record-tying four times, and the WWE Intercontinental Championship twice. He also held the WCW/WWE Cruiserweight Championship a record eight times (five times in WCW, three in WWE). All totaled, he has won 21 titles between WWE and WCW. Mysterio was the 21st person to win the WWE Triple Crown Championship, and was the winner of the 2006 Royal Rumble.

The poem, also known as 'Daffodils', was written by Wordsworth in 1804. It was inspired by a walk William took with his sister Dorothy in the Gowbarrow Park area of Lake Ullswater a couple of years earlier. In Dorothy's journal entry there is reference to an encounter with the golden daffodils which William remembers affectionately “dancing in the breeze' in his famous poem. Four movements make up Rossini's 'William Tell Overture'. Pete Lashley plays them all on acoustic guitars,sometimes double-tracked and more occasionally triple tracked. It begins with the 'Prelude' - a slow passage originally written by Rossini for the cello. Pete detunes his guitar for the first few notes to try and capture the deeper mood created in the original composition. It's interesting to note that William Tell was a revolutionary against 14th Century Austrian oppression in states of the Swiss confederacy. This deep mood of the prelude, representing dawn over the forbidding mountains, could be seen to represent both a pastoral beauty and the oppressed atmosphere in which the Swiss were forced to live under Austrian dictatorship.
The second movement is the 'Storm'. Up to four layers of acoustic guitars are used in this section by Lashley, all of which are playing their own distinct roles to capture the drama. The gentle bird call heard as the storm abates is sublime. Lashley plucks high pitch notes to emulate Rossini's original flute.
The third movement, Ranz des Vaches (call to the dairy cows), originally featuring the English horn and flute, signifies daybreak. Pete softly picks the guitar to emulate the English horn melody and the higher fluttering flute parts that come in later on in the movement.
The fourth movement and the most well known is the 'Gallop' which Rossini heralded by trumpets and wrote for full orchestra. This segment is often used in popular media to denote galloping horses and became the lone ranger theme music. Lashley uses acoustic guitars again to pick out the melody and high paced rhythm. Pete brings in the cowbell and tambourine to sustain the momentum as the music gallops towards its rousing conclusion.
Perhaps the political connotations of the William Tell overture are hardly surprising given that Rossini was born in Pesaro on the Adriatic coast of Italy in 1792 at a time when revolution was breaking out in nearby France. This revolutionary feeling, a questioning of the old order across Europe, was to at least temporarily rock France and parts of Europe to its core. Rossini's father was sympathetic to the French Revolution and welcomed Napoleon Bonaparte's troops when they arrived in northern Italy. When Austria restored the old regime in 1796, Rossini's father was sent to prison and his mother took him to Bologna where she made a living as a leading singer at various theatres of the Romagna region.
During Rossini's Paris years between 1824 and 1829 he created Guillaume Tell (William Tell). The production in 1829 brought his career as a writer of opera to a close. By this time he had already composed thirty-eight operas. Rossini died in 1868.
The overture is one of the most famous and frequently recorded works in the classical repertoire although the opera itself is rarely heard uncut today as the original score runs for more than four hours!

Scott Steiner vs. Goldberg was one of those intense matches that you couldn't take your eyes off of. In part, it was because these two guys are so tough. In part, it was because both have hair-trigger tempers & might set each other off at any second. In part, it was because both are so fragile despite their toughness & could end up injured. In part, it was because you knew neither like doing jobs, so how would they end the match? Mostly, though, it was because it was a good match between two of WCW's more intriguing stars.

Scott Steiner beat Goldberg in a no-DQ match. This was just as frightening as I expected it to be going in. They pummeled each other with scariness. Steiner actually hit a Diamond Cutter at one point. Steiner came off the top, but Goldberg caught him & powerslammed him. Goldberg started holding his bad arm. Midajah came out with a lead pipe, but didn’t do much. Goldberg went headfirst into the steps & started bleeding hardway from the top of his head. Steiner gave him an overhead belly-to-belly & Goldberg landed right on his head. Steiner grabbed the lead pipe, but Goldberg speared him. Vince Russo then hit the ring & killed Goldberg with bat shot. Steiner set up a table & body slammed Goldberg through it. Steiner put on the Recliner, but Goldberg got to the ropes. Steiner took him up top. Goldberg tried to fight back. Steiner then dropped him right on his head again with an overhead belly-to-belly superplex. I thought for sure somebody was going to die at this point. Steiner put on the Recliner again, but Goldberg made the ropes. Goldberg went for the spear, but Russo cut him off. Goldberg grabbed him by the throat. Steiner snuck up behind him & nailed him in the belly & head with the lead pipe. He put on the Recliner for a third time. Goldberg was pretty much a bloody mass of depravity, so the referee stopped the match. One hell of a scary spectacle.

WCW supporters have hardly been spoilt for choice in the Match Of The Year stakes. So, it must have felt like Christmas had come early when Scott Steiner & Goldberg went to war here in an incredibly brutal Anything Goes tussle. 'Big Poppa Pump' & 'Da Man' threw each other around & laid in the blows with such ferocity few (if any) others could (or would) dare to replicate. Even a Vince Russo bat shot could not quell the searing intensity as Goldberg powered out of the Steiner Recliner on three occasions. Ultimately, 'Sir-Pump-A-Lot' hammered the 'G-Man' in the rib cage with a lead pipe, then hit the knockout blow, before applying the match winning Recliner. The sterling craftsmanship of Goldberg & Steiner - who could easily become WCW's answer to The Rock & Triple H - served as a frustrating reminder that without such a twerp of a booker, WCW would still have plenty going for it.

The song tells the sad story of a dying man, William, spurned by his love Barbara Allen, on his death bed. Barbara Allen soon however begins to regret her rejection of William when she hears his death bell knelling and dies of a broken heart herself brought on through sadness and guilt. The final verse does bring a tiny morsel of relief from this utter sadness by entwining the two departed souls together when they are buried next to each other. ‘And from his grave a red red rose and from her grave a green briar and there they joined a lover’s knot, red rose around green briar’
The origins of the song ‘Barbara Allen’ are somewhat unclear but it is generally considered to date back to the beginning of the 17th Century. It was first printed in 1750. It is even mentioned in Samuel Pepys’ diary for January 2nd 1666. One version of the song makes reference to ‘Reading Town’ though whether this is the original and authentic version is not clear. However what is known, is that the piece was very popular in the Thames Valley and occurs in several forms.

William Knibb Memorial High School Reigns Supreme in Rita Marley Foundation (JA) Essay Competition
This year’s essay competition saw entries from Wolmer’s Boys’ School, Marcus Garvey Technical High, York Castle High, Haile Selassie High and William Knibb Memorial High School. The theme, “If you are selected to address world leaders on behalf of the youth, what would be your message & why?” The event now in its second year, was launched in April with participating schools issuing the topic, rules and guidelines to students. Each school appointed a committee comprising teachers to select their top three submissions. Those essays were sent to the Rita Marley Foundation (JA) for assessment by a prime panel of judges comprising Mrs. Rita Marley (Chief Judge, President/Founder); Dr. Donna Hope(Director Institute of Caribbean Studies & Reggae Studies Unit UWI, Mona); Ms. Beverley Lashley (Deputy Campus Librarian UWI Mona Main Library); Vernon Derby (Broadcaster). The judges selected the top four winners whose names were revealed during a mega awards ceremony held at the University of the West Indies, Mona. A massive audience attended the event, chaired by Mrs. Amina Blackwood Meeks (Director of Culture in Education programme, Ministry of Education). Attendees included members of the diplomatic corps, educators, ethiopian orthodox church clergy, media reps and students.
Mrs. Rita Marley commended all students who participated in the competition. She further implored them to “be serious about education because it is the key to success and liberation.” Rosemary Duncan manager of the Rita Marley Foundation (JA) told the audience “Rita Marley Foundation is committed to working with the youth to make them strong; by elevating, educating and empowering them. Writing is empowering.”
Winners
Nastassia Grossett, the student representative for William Knibb Memorial High School (Trelawny) emerged 1st place winner. York Castle High School students Antonio Hall and Shakera Duncan placed 2nd and 3rd place respectively. Aldane Walters of Wolmer’s Boys’ School was 4th. Attendees also celebrated news of Mrs. Marley being conferred an Honorary Doctor of Letters Degree in October by the University of the West Indies, Mona for her outstanding contributions to Jamaica’s music & culture.

John Cena has a new lease on life! At No Way Out, Danny Jackpot thought he had Cena out of his rear view mirror after he had beaten him to earn a shot at the World Heavyweight Championship at RassleMania 2. Theodore Long had other plans though. Due to the way Danny unfairly beat Cena, Theodore Long decided to put Cena in the World Heavyweight Championship match as well, making the match a triple threat match! Now at RassleMania 2, Kurt Angle will be defending the World Heavyweight Championship against both Danny Jackpot and John Cena!
As for Kurt Angle, he managed to retain his World Heavyweight Championship against Abyss, via disqualification, but it was Mark Henry who gave The Monster perhaps the most vicious beatdown of his career. Why did Mark Henry attack Abyss? Was it because of the tombstone at Saturday Night Main Event? Those questions remain unanswered, but Theodore Long has issued a main event tonight, as John Cena and Kurt Angle will team up against Danny Jackpot and Mark Henry!
It has gotten personal between the Extreme Enigma, Jeff Hardy, and the Self Proclaimed Golden Star, Zach Starr. Zach Starr laid down some controversial insults to Jeff Hardy last week about him, and his brother Matt, which led to Jeff snapping, giving Zach Starr a twist of fate. Tonight, Zach Starr will respond by calling out Jeff Hardy.
Bobby Lashley isn't a fan of Del Rio's games. Last week after Del Rio complained about not becoming World Champion at No Way Out, Bobby Lashley came out and told Del Rio to stop whining, and challenged him to a match. Del Rio wasn't too fond of this, and responded telling Lashley he'd fight him on his own terms. As Lashley left, Del Rio attacked Lashley from behind. Tonight, Alberto Del Rio faces off against a former big time rival, Rey Mysterio.
Last time on Smackdown, a tag team reunited, as Edge and Christian laid an assault on the Million Dollar Congregation, just as the Congregation beat El Rojo Mexico and Sin Cara in a tag match. The question is, why did Edge and Christian attack the tag team Champions?
As for El Rojo Mexico, on Flame he won a number one contenders battle royal, and will challenge Santino tonight for the Television Championship! What are Rojo's motives for wanting to pursue the TV Championship for a fourth time?
Oshujax has made it clear he wants to take on all comers for the Intercontinental Championship, but with the way the Shaman acted last week, there still is no number one contender for the Intercontinental Championship at RassleMania, as Oshujax interrupted the match between Evan Bourne, Dolph Ziggler, and Rob Van Dam. Will we find out who will challenge Oshujax at RassleMania 2 tonight? We know one thing is for sure, and that is Rob Van Dam will face Dolph Ziggler in singles action, as both competitors look to take out last week's frustrations upon each other.
The Goldberg and Undertaker's rivalry continues to intensify. Undertaker responded to Goldberg's assault from the previous Smackdown by giving Goldberg a chokeslam and tombstone, just after Goldberg beat Jack Swagger. Tonight, Undertaker looks to get a win against the vicious William Regal in singles action. Will Goldberg look to return the favor?
