Plot: The globe trotting trip that Henry Jones, Jr. sets out on in the early 1900s next takes him and his family to Russia. A few acts of clumsiness puts Indy at odds with his father who is greatly displeased with Indy. Indy runs away into the Russian countryside and wakes in the morning on a haystack. He encounters an odd, cantankerous old man named Leo Tolstoy, who is in full agreement that "hell" is other people. Both are running away to seek a simpler life. They cross the countryside, encountering colorful Gypsies and avoiding fierce Imperial Cossack troops. The hardships of the journey make Indy homesick, but he won't soon forget his journey with the stubborn old man. Indy's next destination is Greece, where his mother Anna realizes that father and son need to spend more time together. The two bristle at each other's company as they explore the sites of ancient Greece, but Henry finally reaches past Indy's impudence and stubbornness when the topic turns to philosophy and the teachings of Aristotle. A series of misadventures lead them to an isolated monastery perched high on the peak of a mountain. While studying in the library, Indy meets Nikos Kazantzakis, the writer who would some day write Zorba the Greek. Lessons on causality come in handy on the harrowing trip in a tiny cage reeled up a thousand-foot mountainside.

Quotes:
Anna Jones: [scolding their son] Henry, we are guests in this house.::Prof. Henry Jones, Sr.: Guests, Junior. Not rampaging barbarians.
Anna Jones: Your father will deal with you in the morning.::Indiana Jones: What's he gonna do?::Anna Jones: Have you shot in the morning. I will provide the blindfold.
Leo Tolstoy: You reeking little swine, how dare you shoot me in the ass!::Indiana Jones: I thought you were a giant weazle.::Leo Tolstoy: Do I look like a giant weazle? Is it my twitching snout? My long, hairless tail? Are all little English boys as stupid as you?::Indiana Jones: I'm not English, I'm American.::Leo Tolstoy: That explains it.
Indiana Jones: You have dogs? So do I. One I mean, her name's Indiana. I haven't seen her in over a year, though. 'Cause we've been traveling so much.::Leo Tolstoy: You miss her?::Indiana Jones: Yeah, you bet I do. Can't wait to see her when we get home. Wonder if she'll still remember me.::Leo Tolstoy: Of course she will. Dogs are better than people.
Leo Tolstoy: How dare you make me feel guilty!
Indiana Jones: Hey, they were calling you Tolstoy. I think my father has some of your books. Didn't you write that eh, that really big fat one about war?::Leo Tolstoy: And peace.::Indiana Jones: No kiddin'. My father thinks you're great!::Leo Tolstoy: Your dad's an imbicile.::Indiana Jones: He's usually not wrong about this stuff. You should ask him.
Leo Tolstoy: Do not try to see God through spectacles borrowed from the church. See God through your own eyes.
Indiana Jones: Father, I don't think that he understand your ancient Greek.::Prof. Henry Jones, Sr.: Well he should have understood it.
Indiana Jones: Father, I really doubt if a bus is even gonna come and if it does, there's probably only one a day and, and it's probably already gone!::Prof. Henry Jones, Sr.: Junior, you are now being cynical.::Indiana Jones: [beneath his breath] Yes sir.::Prof. Henry Jones, Sr.: See, after skepticism comes cynicism.
Indiana Jones: [Indy and his father are splashing around in a lake] I didn't even know you could swim.::Prof. Henry Jones, Sr.: There's a lot you don't know about me, Junior. [splashes water at his son] When I was five years old, I used to go swimming in a loch. Now that was cold!

It shows his wife Sofya picking flowers in the garden, his daughter Aleksandra sitting in the carriage in the white blouse, his aide and confidante, V. Chertkov, and students. Russian writer, essayist, philosopher, and political thinker Lev Nikolayevich Tolstoy, known as Leo Tolstoy was born September 9, 1828, into a family of Russian nobility. Although it's been more than a hundred years after his death, he still ranks among the world's best writers. Many consider him the greatest writer of all time.
Mostly he wrote novels and short stories, but later in life also wrote essays and plays. Two best Tolstoy's novels are War and Peace (1869) and Anna Karenina (1877). They can be found in almost every list of the most popular novels of all time. Besides them, the more important works include: Family Happiness (1859), A Confession (1882), The Death of Ivan Ilyich (1886), The Kingdom of God Is Within You (1894), Resurrection (1899), and Hadji Murat (1912).

ANNA KARENINA by Leo Tolstoy - Part 1 - FULL AudioBook | Greatest Audio Books - Anna Karenina (Russian: «Анна Каренина»; Russian pronunciation: [ˈanːə kɐˈrʲenʲɪnə]) is a novel by the Russian writer Leo Tolstoy, published in serial installments from 1873 to 1877 in the periodical The Russian Messenger. Tolstoy clashed with editor Mikhail Katkov over political issues that arose in the final installment (Tolstoy's unpopular views of volunteers going to Serbia); therefore, the novel's first complete appearance was in book form.
Widely regarded as a pinnacle in realist fiction, Tolstoy considered Anna Karenina his first true novel, when he came to consider War and Peace to be more than a novel.
Fyodor Dostoevsky declared it to be "flawless as a work of art". His opinion was shared by Vladimir Nabokov, who especially admired "the flawless magic of Tolstoy's style", and by William Faulkner, who described the novel as "the best ever written". The novel is currently enjoying popularity, as demonstrated by a recent poll of 125 contemporary authors by J. Peder Zane, published in 2007 in "The Top Ten" in Time, which declared that Anna Karenina is the "greatest novel ever written."
PLOT INTRODUCTION:
Anna Karenina is the tragedy of married aristocrat and socialite Anna Karenina and her affair with the affluent Count Vronsky. The story starts when she arrives in the midst of a family broken up by her brother's unbridled womanizing—something that prefigures her own later situation, though with less tolerance for her by others.
A bachelor, Vronsky is willing to marry her if she would agree to leave her husband Karenin, a government official, but she is vulnerable to the pressures of Russian social norms, her own insecurities and Karenin's indecision. Although Vronsky and Anna go to Italy where they can be together, they have trouble making friends. Back in Russia, she is shunned, becoming further isolated and anxious, while Vronsky pursues his social life. Despite Vronsky's reassurances she grows increasingly possessive and paranoid about his imagined infidelity, fearing loss of control.
A parallel story within the novel is that of Konstantin Levin, a country landowner who desires to marry Kitty, sister to Dolly and sister-in-law to Anna's brother Oblonsky. Konstantin has to propose twice before Kitty accepts. The novel details Konstantin's difficulties managing his estate, his eventual marriage, and personal issues, until the birth of his first child. The Kingdom of God Is Within You Leo Tolstoy - FULL Audio Book | Greatest Audio Books - The Kingdom of God Is Within You (Russian: Царство Божие внутри вас [Tsarstvo Bozhiye vnutri vas]) is the non-fiction magnum opus of Leo Tolstoy. The book was first published in Germany in 1894 after being banned in his home country of Russia. It is the culmination of thirty years of Tolstoy's Christian anarchist thinking, and lays out a new organization for society based on a literal Christian interpretation.
The title of the book is taken from Luke 17:21. In the book Tolstoy speaks of the principle of non-violent resistance when confronted by violence, as taught by Jesus Christ. In reading Jesus' words in the Gospels, Tolstoy notes that the modern church is a heretical creation: "Nowhere nor in anything, except in the assertion of the Church, can we find that God or Christ founded anything like what churchmen understand by the Church."
Tolstoy presented excerpts from magazines and newspapers relating various personal experiences, and gave keen insight into the history of non-resistance from the very foundation of Christianity, as being professed by a minority of believers. In particular, he confronts those who seek to maintain status quo: "That this social order with its pauperism, famines, prisons, gallows, armies, and wars is necessary to society; that still greater disaster would ensue if this organization were destroyed; all this is said only by those who profit by this organization, while those who suffer from it -- and they are ten times as numerous -- think and say quite the contrary." There are 2 sections. The 1st is of Tolstoy's 80th birthday at Yasnaya Polyana. It shows his wife Sofya picking flowers in the garden, his daughter Aleksandra sitting in the carriage in the white blouse, his aide and confidante, V. Chertkov, and students. It was filmed by Aleksandr Osipovich Drankov. We're not sure of all the details within the 2nd section, so any help would be greatly appreciated. Also, please reach out to us if you're interested in assisting with the Intertitle Cards's translation.
Count Lev Nikolayevich Tolstoy was a Russian writer (most famously, War and Peace & Anna Karenina) and is oft-considered the world's greatest novelist. He was equally known for his complicated and paradoxical persona and for his extreme moralistic and ascetic views, which he adopted after a moral crisis and spiritual awakening in the 1870s, after which he also became noted as a moral thinker and social reformer. His literal interpretation of the ethical teachings of Jesus, centering on the Sermon on the Mount, caused him in later life to become a fervent Christian anarchist and anarcho-pacifist. His ideas on nonviolent resistance, expressed in such works as The Kingdom of God Is Within You, were to have a profound impact on such pivotal twentieth-century figures as Mohandas (Mahatma) Gandhi and Martin Luther King, Jr.

What Men Live By and Other Tales - FULL Audio Book - by Leo Tolstoy
"What Men Live By" is a short story written by Russian author Leo Tolstoy in 1885. It is one of the short stories included in his collection What Men Live By, and Other Tales, published in 1885. The compilation also included the written pieces "The Three Questions", "The Coffee-House of Surat", and "How Much Land Does a Man Need?".
Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn refers to the story in Cancer Ward.
PLOT
A kind and humble shoemaker called Simon goes out one day to purchase sheep-skins in order to sew a winter coat for his wife and himself to share. Usually the little money, which Simon earned would be spent to feed his wife and children. Simon decided that in order to afford the skins he must go on a collection to receive the five roubles and twenty kopeks owed to him by his customers. As he heads out to collect the money he also borrows a three-rouble note from his wife's money box. While going on his collection he only manages to receive twenty kopeks rather than the full amount. Feeling disheartened by this Simon rashly spends the twenty kopeks on vodka and starts to head back home.
On his way home he rants to himself about the little he can do with twenty kopeks besides spend it on alcohol and that the winter cold is bearable without a sheep-skin coat. While approaching a holy shrine, Simon stops and notices something pale looking leaning against it. He peers harder and distinguishes that it is a naked man who appears poor of health. At first he is suspicious and fears that the man has no good intentions if he is left in such a state. He proceeds to pass the man until he feels that for a second the man lifted his head and looked toward him. Simon debates what to do in his mind and feels shameful for his disregard and heads back to help the man.
Simon gives the articles of clothing he can and wraps around the stranger. He aids him as they both walk toward Simon's home. Though they walk together side by side, the stranger barely speaks and when Simon asks how he was left in that situation the only answers the man would give was: "I may not tell" and "God has punished me." Meanwhile Simon's wife Matrena debates whether or not to bake more bread for the night's meal so that there is enough for the following morning's breakfast. She decides that the loaf of bread that they have left would be ample enough to last till the following morning. As she sees Simon approaching the door she is angered to see him with a strange man who is wrapped in Simon's clothing.
Matrena immediately expresses her displeasure with Simon, accusing him and his strange companion to be drunkards and harassing Simon for not returning with the sheep-skin needed to make a new coat. Once the tension settles down she bids that the stranger sits down and have dinner with them. After seeing the stranger take bites at the bread she placed for him on his plate, she began to felt pity and showed so in her face. When the stranger noticed this his grim expression lit up immediately and he smiled for one brief moment. After hearing the story from the stranger how Simon had kindly robed the stranger after seeing him in his naked state Matrena grabbed more of their old clothing and gave it to Simon.
The following morning Simon addresses the stranger and asks his name. The stranger answers that his name is simply Michael. Simon explains to Michael that he can stay in his household as long as he can earn his keep by acting as an assistant for Simon in his shoemaking business. Michael agrees to these terms and for a long period of time remains a very faithful assistant. One day a customer who was a nobleman came in their shop. The nobleman outlined strict conditions for the construction of a pair of thick leather boots will not lose its shapes or become loose at the seams for a year or else he would have Simon arrested. When Simon gave the leather that the nobleman had given them to use to Michael, Michael appears to stare beyond the nobleman's shoulder and smiled for the second time since he had been there.

Reading for Preaching: The Preacher in Conversation with Storytellers, Biographers, Poets, and Journalists
Cornelius Plantinga Jr.
http://www.eerdmans.com/Products/7077/reading-for-preaching.aspx
In Reading for Preaching Cornelius Plantinga makes a striking claim: preachers who read widely will most likely become better preachers.
Plantinga -- himself a master preacher -- shows how a wide reading program can benefit preachers. First, he says, good reading generates delight, and the preacher who enters the world of delight goes with God. Good reading can also help tune the preacher's ear for language -- his or her primary tool. General reading can enlarge the preacher's sympathies for people and situations that she or he had previously known nothing about. And, above all, the preacher who reads widely has the chance to become wise.
This beautifully written book will benefit not just preachers but anyone interested in the wisdom to be derived from reading.
Works that Plantinga interacts with in the book include
The Kite Runner, by Khaled Hosseini
Enrique's Journey, by Sonia Nazario
Silence, by Shusaku Endo
"How Much Land Does a Man Need?" by Leo Tolstoy
"Narcissus Leaves the Pool" by Joseph Epstein
Les Miserables, by Victor Hugo
. . . and many more!

And, above all, the preacher who reads widely has the chance to become wise.
This beautifully written book will benefit not just preachers but anyone interested in the wisdom to be derived from reading.
Works that Plantinga interacts with in the book include
The Kite Runner, by Khaled Hosseini
Enrique's Journey, by Sonia Nazario
Silence, by Shusaku Endo
"How Much Land Does a Man Need?" by Leo Tolstoy
"Narcissus Leaves the Pool" by Joseph Epstein
Les Miserables, by Victor Hugo
. . . and many more!

Father to 14 children and the nation of Russia, Leo Tolstoy's influence is almost incalculable. In fact, many don't realize that it was his writings and correspondence with Mohandas Gandhi that helped both Gandhi and Martin Luther King, Jr. learn how to engage in "peaceful resistance" for positive change in their nations. Yet, his desire to better himself and the world became such an obsession that it diminished his impact later in life. He is a fascinating man with much truth to teach and learning about his life is very worth the effort!

LEO TOLSTOY "WAR AND PEACE" audiobook...
Often called the greatest novel ever written, War and Peace is at once an epic of the Napoleonic wars, a philosophical study, and a celebration of the Russian spirit. Tolstoy's genius is clearly seen in the multitude of characters in this massive chronicle, all of them fully realized and equally memorable. Out of this complex narrative emerges a profound examination of the individual's place in the historical process, one that makes it clear why Thomas Mann praised Tolstoy for his Homeric powers and placed War and Peace in the same category as The Iliad.

E M Forster Talks About Writing Novels - 'Only Connect'
This is part of a talk given at the BBC in 1958 by the great English novelist E M Forster - 'A Passage to India', 'A Room with a View', 'Howards End' and so on.
In it, the author speaks about beginning writing and why he writes. He then discusses one of the reasons he dried up - that 'the social aspect of the world changed so very much' and that he had been
'accustomed to write about the old [now] vanished world with its homes and its family life and its comparative peace'.
Studying Forster at university, one 'mantra' in particular stays with me today:
'Only connect. That was the whole of her sermon. Only connect the prose and the passion, and both will be exalted, and human love will be seen at its height. Live in fragments no longer. Only connect,
and the beast and the monk, robbed of the isolation that is life to either, will die'. (Ch 22 'Howard's End', 1910).
He modestly states he thinks he is not a great writer as he had only managed to get down in his novels three types: 'the person I think I am, the people who irritate me and the people I'd like to be'. In this,
he contrasts himself with Leo Tolstoy who 'can get hold of all types'.
The talk is accompanied by footage of Forster in his rooms at Cambridge University. We see him walking about his study, fetching a novel from a book case and writing at his desk.
In evidence on the mantle piece is the blue and white china collection he'd been putting together since his school days.
E M Forster is my favourite novelist and so I was particularly pleased to finally see him on film and hear him talk about writing.
Enjoy!
